Can Dolli’s poisonous past save her from a dungeon eater? Dolli was just getting to like the idea of being the overlord of Monster Haven when a roaming Warmonger set his eyes on her dungeon core. Some of her citizens have defected to the enemy horde for the promise of safety, and now Dolli has a choice to make.
Does she wipe them out to save those who remain, or does she sacrifice herself to save them all?
But the defectors don’t know that the Warmonger has an even more sinister plot than just consuming Dolli’s core—and when they finally see his true monstrous nature, will it be too late? Dolli needs a killer cure, a poison so toxic it might wreck her and the enemy. She needs... a Hero.
I jumped into reading Revenging Dungeon right after reading the first book in the series Reluctant Dungeon. I enjoyed the twist of the monsters fighting other monsters instead of hero’s. I also felt we got a bit more personality of the secondary characters, especially Katrina and Taffy are a great addition to the cast.
The same as with Reluctant Dungeon Revenging Dungeon feels a little rushed. I wished the books were a bit longer to allow for some more explanation and breathing room.
Dolli is just starting to enjoy being an overlord of Monster Haven, but when a warmonger sets his eyes on her dungeon she is in a quandary, as he is another dungeon but ever so powerful and intent on wiping them out. Some of the citizens of what had been Little Crossroads before, are still angry at the witch and find it difficult to trust her, since it was her indolence which had turned their village into a dungeon and the citizens into monsters, so they defected and joined the enemy, and what a cruel enemy he turned out to be. However, Dolli kept pushing those who remained to get stronger, to upgrade not only their class but the dungeon to prepare for war. She is cunning and never falters. Once she gets an idea into her head she will follow it through even at the cost to her own life. Saying that, she was ready to give her life to save her people, but she would rather they all lived to see another day. She employs heroes and makes pacts with these, so that they would not turn on her own people, as heroes are used to doing. So when Kelzoul finally arrives at Monster Haven he finds more than he bargained for, as heroes took up the quest and hundreds turned up to fight. I love that Dolli is so innovative and creative in her thinking and plotting, and I really love Nubiri, the wyvern who acts as guardian to the dungeon. I also love the way Dolli and Nubiri play around with the hero Keegan, who stole Nubiri's eggs, summoning him just to beat him to a pulp and sending him to respawn in order to raise their level! Vengeance is best served cold.
Dolli and the citizens of Monster Haven survived Keegan but now there is a Roaming Dungeon, lead by Warmonger, out to consume everything in its path and Dolli's core is on his menu. Most of this book is Dolli and crew building up and getting stronger. Using the "heroes" to help them to survive. Dolli still doesn't understand what and NPC is or why the heroes treat her people like they're not real, but she's not afraid of treating them the same way, if it means that Monster Haven makes it through this new challenge. I loved the North Pole crew and the giant Tortoise in this book.
The concept of NPCs summoning gamers' with quests and then grinding them for XP was just a delightful and entertaining twist that made me laugh. This was a quick and fun read, and I totally recommend it for fans of gamelit fantasy.
I am glad I continued the series. As the first book was kinda a slow starter and it seemingly took a while perk my interest! There was a lotta world building. But I've read JD Astra before and enjoyed her work so since it was free with my Audible plus membership. How could I resist? I found that listening to Revenging Dungeon was fun, even a bit cute. Well if you can imagine edge-of-your-seat action as Dungeon Core's fight, in a winner take all event, cute. But I swear JD Astra did it! And Judy Alice Lee kept up as she narrated this saga. Now on to the third and final book in this series ARC!
Dollitrice is getting the hang of being a dungeon overlord. She is actively directing and helping fend off the heroes. There is even time to relax and enjoy themselves. That is when they find out that they are in the path of the dungeon destroying horde.
I’m really enjoying the twist on the series from this one! It’s got some fun interactions between Dolli and the other dungeon mobs and the heroes. I’m excited to see how it wraps up in book 3! At the time I listened, the entire trilogy was included with an Audible subscription. Judy Alice Lee does a great job with the narration!
In Revenging Dungeon, a new threat makes itself known - a rival dungeon is encroaching and threatening her people. No rest for the wicked - the villagers must level themselves and their dungeon up in order to attack first. The idea of NPCs summoning gamers with quests and then grinding them for XP was a genius one that I loved. Another fresh take on the genre (as far as I’m aware!).
This review is for the audiobook. I could not add a new edition for it, so I am reviewing it here.
The way this story is growing is interesting. The arc of the major story was advanced in this story. Lots of fun. Lots of action. I like the cleverness in the use of magic.
Instead of heroes attacking the monsters of Monster Haven, another dungeon is after them. Dolli is quite creative with her solution to the problem. I quite enjoyed watching these monsters find their place and truly take over. I'm off to the next one.
I thought Revenging Dungeon was a bit better than the first book in the Monster Haven series, Reluctant Dungeon. This is primarily due to the addition of Katrina and Taffy to the cast of characters. Like the first book, the narrator of the audiobook does a fantastic job and is a joy to listen to.
