The Legend MacKinnon

Rate this book
Three centuries ago in Scotland a curse was born of the long-standing feud between the Claren and the MacKinnon clans. Now, generations later, destiny has decreed that three women, the last of the Claren line, be granted one final chance to set things right.

Maggie, Cailean, and Delaney Claren are three cousins who grow up unaware of one another—until an inheritance brings them together. Now mysterious journals and the deed to an ancient Scottish castle will bring them face-to-face with the warriors at the heart of the MacKinnon family, three brothers sentenced to cruel fates by a terrible curse.

Duncan is trapped in the form of a ghost, Rory must live an immortal life alone, and Alexander has been wrenched by time from the past to the present, with no way back. Ferociously compelling, dangerously relentless, they are bound by no mortal laws—except desire for the three Claren women. The journals speak of one key that can break the powerful spell. And finding that key will plunge them all into a world of unforeseeable danger and tantalizing desire....

Within the pages of this book you'll find not one but three terrific love stories all bound together with a skillful paranormal thread. Normally I feel short-changed when a book concentrates on more than one couple but that wasn't the case this time around. Because each love story is so entwined with the plot and all of the characters continue to interact with each other once the focus shifts from their romance I never felt that cheated.

All three heroes are a bit on the "arrogant alpha" side but meet up with heroines who are more than their match. You'll find lots of humor and passion but no weak kneed, simpering heroines here. I highly recommend this one to paranormal romance lovers who are looking for a fast paced romance. It worked on all levels for me, the picky paranormal reader.

Now that I am reading another of her books, I realized why I have seen her & why the author seems so familiar! I checked the list and saw that I only had one book marked as a "to read" book... Then I had an "AHA" moment! So, here is my story!

I was at a scrapbook convention as a vendor years ago & met several authors who also scrapbooked. Because I had small children & had no time to read, the only one who really stood out was the author of the Amber Brown books. But then I met Donna Kauffman. I had never read a romance, just the classics & the books I read with my kids. I just didn't have time. DK said "give me your address & I will send you the book I just had published. You may like it" Sooo I did. AND THIS was the book...

I am giving this book a 5 star rating, because it changed my LIFE!! This book ALONE changed what kind of books I am willing to read!! Now... every book I read has some romance in it! I cannot go for boring & Never had I even considered paranormal until this book!

This was an EXTREMELY LIGHT romance & made my transition from Mary Higgins Clark, what my MOM read & Stephen King to lets say... JR WARD...EASY!!

This is a story of 3 cousins & 3 brothers from feuding clans. The women must break the curse to save the highland men, who have been trapped in present time through one form or another. It's cute & quirky & I love the ghost the most. I didn't like the military cousin very much, but the diversity in characters made the book. It was funny, sweet & sad & with the final HEA, rewarding, because I was a convert for sure!!

This is one of those books you have to read that will show you the development of the author, from then to now!! I am soooo happy she gave me the book, because reading this book again after the Twilight series, brought me to where I am as a reader today!! Just thinking about my reading rut I'd be in today if it wasn't for her makes me shiver!

AND I think that deserves a HUGE score!! Thank You!! Thank You!!!

Read and reviewed years ago but that review is missing.
I saw this in my overdrive library and as I am on a going back to old authors kick, I decided to reread it. I had forgotten how entertaining this book was.
A wonderfully emotional read that had me in tears a few times.
It is short with a tight amount of background on all six characters but for all that I still was entertained.
Three couples who fate and destiny have decreed must break a curse that has been in play for 300 years.
Three women, cousins, who know nothing about their own pasts, and are from the Claren clan that played its part in the placing of a curse, are matched to three men from the MacKinnon clan, who have a lesson in love to learn.
I thoroughly enjoyed the ride along as Maggie and ghostly Duncan deal with her dangerous past. Cailean and Rory deal with his immortality. And my favourite pairing, strong and capable Delany who finds her equal in clan chieftain Alexander.
The whole story is well written and flows at a comfortable and believable pace.
Sweet ending.

I liked the characters, but honestly I did not enjoy them all being in one book. I wish the author had just made it a series. It's just some of the relationships seemed so rush and it was hard for me to see some of them as deep an meaningful like she wanted them to be. Some still felt like the I like you a lot but I wouldn't call it love. In fact, I think I really like the first couple mention in the beginning of story.

Truly captivating!

I have read dozens, if not hundreds of Highland historical fiction romance, but this one kept me enthralled till the last page. It also gave me the resolve to read more from this author.

The Legend Of MacKinnon reveals a curse that dooms any marriage between a MacKinnon and a Claren, two clans with a long-time feud. Three Claren cousins unite with three MacKinnon brothers to find the key to breaking the curse. Each brother is under a different curse.

Throughout the story, each cousin meets a MacKinnon brother and falls almost instantly in love. It is basically the same subplot, three times. I think the book would have been much better with only one couple (I liked the first couple best) giving the author a longer time to develop the romance.

Good escapist romance novel. Three brothers and three cousins that need to break the 300yr old curse between the two clans. It is a love conquers all type of romance and since three stories are told within one novel a lot of insta love floating around. Elements of faerie magic to make it all happen.

I've read this twice now and one of the elements that stuck with me is the mysterious castle with all it's secrets and hidden passage ways. I almost wish someone would write a time travelling Scots romance series featuring this castle 😂.

This book was bonkers from start to finish, which is why I picked it up for my vacation read. A bit more plot-heavy than I wanted, and the characters were all pretty similar to each other. Also a SUPER corny ending, which also felt a bit rushed. I will admit I was surprisingly absorbed at some points, but don't think I'll be checking out more of this author's work. And if I never read the phrase "took [his/her] mouth" again (used to describe kissing), I will be super happy.

Amazing read and I’ve read a lot of books.

I don’t typically make such an effort to comment on romance novels; however, this one is an excellent read. Kept my attention and I read the entire book in a couple of days!

A friend sent me the book in a box full of books and I finally got around to reading it. It sounded like one of the best in the bunch and so far it really was. I've never read anything by Donna Kauffman before but she did a great job with this book.

The three Claren women are Maggie, Cailean and Delaney. They each have a section of the book. The first part of the book is about Maggie and Duncan. Maggie is running from her ex-fiance who would rather have her dead then not have her. She has inherited a cabin in North Carolina and so goes there to hide out. When she gets there she discovers there is a man living in her cabin. Of course, it becomes obvious he's not just a man when he starts disappearing at will. Maggie comes to terms with Duncan's ghostly activity as they grow to like and them want each other, him helping her with her ex and she helping him with his curse.

Cailean appears in Maggie's story. She stumbles upon Maggie by following her own inheritance to North Carolina which turns out to be a large trunk full of books regarding the Legend MacKinnon. Cailean is a little different as she has visions. Her visions lead her to Scotland and to the graveyard where their Uncle was buried. While there she stumbles upon Rory and and instant connection is made. Cailean knows who he is and when he takes her deep into the mountain castle things heat up quickly.

While in Scotland Cailean runs into Delaney who was left the land the MacKinnon castle resides on. Of course, Rory isn't all that happy about it. Still when they go in search for the key to the curses Delaney stumbles upon a portion of the castle that isn't supposed to be there and straight into Alexander! Alexander seems a little crazed and has every intention of returning to his time with 20th century weaponry to wipe out the Claren Clan and save the MacKinnons.

I really like all the woman and men and while I liked the story flow I think there are a few things that could have been down differently. For instance. I liked that Maggie and Cailean stumbled upon their men. Delaney did as well but after both Maggie and Cailean found there men and paired off with them so it was obvious to even the character that she was supposed to end up with Alexander. This I found a bit annoying and it seems liked the time alotted for them to fall in love got progressively shorter.

Duncan and Maggie took a little time and their story seems more "plausible". Cailean was practically begging for Rory, which he wanted, so they were going to hook up but they took their time about involving hearts. They also needed to be together so they could find the key to the curse. Delaney and Alexander didn't seem to have anything binding them together. It just seem like the opportunity presented itself and they went with it. Also their "love" was practically instant which bugged me a bit.

I did like the way the story wove together and how Kauffman planned out the story and curses on each MacKinnon men.

I really enjoyed reading it though I'm not planning on keeping the book.

Too dry. Some potentially good parts were told, not shown. Needed more time for relationship development.

STORY BRIEF:
The book is divided into three stories within one overall plot. Three hundred years ago, two Scottish clans feuded and fought. Three MacKinnon brothers were supposed to marry three Claren sisters to bring about peace. Two of the sisters had psychic/seer abilities. None of the marriages happened, and a curse was placed on the three brothers. In 1998, Lachlan Claren died and left property to three women who were Claren descendants. They are cousins who didn’t know each other until Lachlan’s solicitor contacted them. When they travel to claim their inheritances, they each meet one of the three MacKinnon brothers. Maggie meets Duncan who died 300 years ago and is now a ghost but he is given a human body for one month each year. Cailean meets Rory, who is human but immortal, still in a 27-year-old body. Delaney meets Alex, who was sent through a time portal and now lives in the year 1998. They join efforts to find a way to break the curse.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
The overall plot was good, but the execution was dry. More than once I was annoyed when the author mentioned something interesting but gave no details. For example on page 228: ““did you know that there is an aboriginal tribe in New Guinea that believes that . . .” She whispered in his ear. His groan was very satisfactory. He grinned and said “did you know that in fourteenth century Russia, there was a band of Mongols who thought it was very pleasurable to . . .” He leaned up and whispered in her ear.” The author doesn’t provide any more information on the above. This is a book, not TV, there is no need to censor. Another detail not being shown was on page 277. “Rory’s smile widened. “Duncan’s account of his first plane flight is not to be missed.” Cailean smiled. “Maggie visited me after you both left. Her account was also not to be missed.”” I wanted to hear about Duncan’s flight, but the author didn’t say any more about it. This was telling, not showing.

The characters had potential but not enough time was spent on them. Each couple fell in lust within two days of meeting. I wanted more character and relationship development. Maybe this book should have been two stories instead of three.

The ending was a let down. I was expecting something more interesting. It was a happy ending but not creative. The curse wasn’t explained well and didn’t make sense. I had to stretch to understand a curse on one or two of the brothers - but not all three.

DATA:
Story length: 403 pages. Swearing language: mild including religious words. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 5. Total number of sex scene pages: 5. Setting: 1998 Madden County, North Carolina, and Scotland. Copyright: 1998. Genre: paranormal time travel romance.

I met her years ago at a scrapbook convention. She was great! Later I found out she was an author, and she sent me one of her books... this one signed. It was my intro to romance/paranormal romance - ghosts with limited time. I never thought to read romance at all... Years ago, I would give this a 5 star. Not much romance at all, but what did I know.

Since then I have so graduated to other books, better faster stories. I had a dry spell (years)and did not have time to read other than Harry Potter & Twilight series, since HP came out... Now in 4 monthes, I have read well over 100 books... I used to count...

Anyway, this was a good intro to romance if you want to break in. Otherwise it gets bumped down to a 2.5 to 3 stars...

5 stars isn't enough! The Legend McKinnon is a 1998 release from Donna Kauffman that needs to be read if you haven't had the true pleasure of reading it! If you have at any previous time, it is time to take your copy off your KEEPER shelf (where it must hold pride of place) read it again! This contemporary tale that crosses centuries will mesmerize you, and keep you in its thrall until the last page has turned! A tale of redemption and pain, love and belonging is the best read ever from the phenomenally talented Donna Kauffman! This story will resonate emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other!

It had the potential to be good, but it was just too weird towards the end. The story starts out in modern day America. A young woman is staying at an old home which (for some reason) is haunted by a Scottish ghost. That was a little odd.... how did the ghost get "across the pond"? But I let that one slide.

But then someone the modern day girl travels through a magical tunnel to Scotland. I really don't know what to say. I actually reread the book, hoping to understand it better, but I'm still confused by it.

Donna Kauffman dreams up a fun and imaginative plot, but presents one-dimensional protagonists (with frustratingly literal explanations of their character composition and emotional experiences; c'mon, "show not tell"), implausible closeness (she describes relationships between women created over years, not days), unrealistic dialogue, and even grammatical errors. The story resolves in a satisfying manner, however. If you've read a lot in this genre and are looking for one more, go for it; but "The Legend MacKinnon" certainly isn't the best of the bunch.

So so time travel story, set in contempory times Scotland. Three cursed brothers from 300 years earlier meet the descendents of their clan's enemies, three women cousins. All meet their match (and mate) and try to figure out how to end the curse. Took me forever to get through this book, just didn't pull me in or keep me interested. It wasn't bad, but nothing compelling in it for me, when it should have been.

Cheesy good fun! Perfect summer read! Loved it! I have one word of caution though, might be slightly addictive. I had serious issues putting the book down to take care of errands...you know life. Now that I'm done I wish I wasn't...must find my next book :) I like Donna Kaufman's writing style. The characters and world are well developed and really get the reader engaged in the story. This was the first Donna Kaufman book that I've read. I will be reading more from her.

I'd grabbed this at Goodwill one time on a whim. Read it during the two evenings our power was out. It was decent enough to hold my interest, but just a little too much to have the three heroines - one with a little more story would've been much better. Still, decent way to pass the hours in the dark, reading by lantern and flashlight.

An ancient curse has sentenced the seventeenth-century MacKinnon brothers to terrible fates, and only the twentieth-century American Claren women can break the spell, but the two clans are long-standing enemies.

I thought the idea of the brothers having 3 different curses made against them was very original.

Ya gotta love the Scottish highlanders.

As far a romance type books go this was one of the better ones for me because I'm really not into the overly descriptive, hot and heavy books. They usually come across as cheesy so I steer clear of the genre as a whole. Somehow this ended up on my bookshelf at home so I read it. The story itself is really cool and I loved the development of it.

Woke up this morning thinking about this book - despite the fact that it has been more than 10 years since I read it! I can only conclude that reading Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series has put Scotland firmly in my mind. Perhaps this little gem warrants a re-visit..... :)
