3.75 Stars!
I have yet to rate a Magical Animal Fairies book below four stars (even if I'm rounding Lara and Erin’s books up, because Ashley’s was just that good). Although I don’t think this book had as strong a message as the previous two, the writing was still excellent overall. I adore Sue Mongredien as a writer. She always makes an effort to ensure that her writing is engaging, beyond just having a solid plot.
In general, having a phoenix be associated with humour is such a unique concept! The way she set up Giggles having dominion over humour by having the girls tell jokes and laugh nonstop, which might only be slightly out of the ordinary for them, but just enough for readers to be like, ‘ummm, something’s definitely happening here’ was really well done in my opinion. Also, just little things like when one of the boys at the camp thought he saw a butterfly, but it was just Erin. (I don’t know why that’s not something that’s used more often.) Or when Rachel briefly described what flying felt like, because while the girls always get to turn into fairies, they never go into detail about what it’s like for them.
Erin’s characterization was really good too! She was funny, smart and overall a solid, memorable fairy character. Everyone give Erin her flowers for this dramatic, yet deeply unserious entry. (I would expect nothing less from a fairy whose main goal is to make people laugh.) That, and her tiny fairy binoculars. The entire scene of her spying on the goblins with them was the funniest thing ever. (If there was ever a book to write as a slapstick, it’s this one.)
I also found her to be very clever. Using the fact that the boys thought she was a butterfly to her advantage by creating a few sparkles to send them on a wild butterfly chase was a brilliant idea. (The illustration for that scene on page 27 is one I will never forget; it was so beautiful!)
Speaking of illustrations, the art is definitely another point in favour of the book. Erin’s design is perfect, if not for the fuck ass vest. She’s already got feathers on her headband. Why does she need the vest too? Anyway, her colour scheme is great, I’ve always been a sucker for an ombré dress, and the gladiator sandals were a really nice touch. Plus, I love how the design complements her magical animal’s! Giggles was more orange and yellow with bits of red, while Erin was the opposite, and I couldn’t have designed them better myself. Moreover, Rachel and Kirsty look adorable! Kirsty’s outfit is more my style, but Rachel looks like Lily from Hannah Montana and I love that for her. (Her flower scrunchie is the cutest!)
I can’t end it here without talking about Rachel and Kirsty’s friendship. Kirsty is absolutely the funnier one out of the two of them, but she loves Rachel enough to laugh at her shitty jokes, which is perfectly in character for both of them. And having them link arms as they head back was the perfect way to end the book.
stellar commentary from yours truly:
-Who drew Kirsty holding the camera like that, and why?
-After Rachel’s ‘Scottsdales’ joke. - If the phoenix controls humour, why are these jokes so bad?
-When that robin nearly killed Rachel by ramming its beak into her wings. - Further proof that birds are evil!
-As soon as I read this line from one of the goblins, “Jack Frost is going to be so happy. He might even smile - imagine that!” (pg. 47) - Please, you can’t perform miracles.
