So…you know when a book is bad…like indisputably bad…and deep down you just know it’s bad…but (*ahem*) you can’t help but kinda like it anyway?

Welcome to Holed Up.

Insta-love.
No explanation for the attraction.
No research about the facts of the story.
No plausible way some of it plays out.
Ridiculous out-of-character actions.
A random ex-boyfriend appearance.
Over-over-and-back-over-the-top bad guy.

BUT…it only takes this: alpha FBI MC!!!!! Hook, line, and sinker…I’m in.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to anyone. But, I just bought book 2 and 3…so there’s that…

Everything was too rushed. Usually I'm fine with insta-lust, but this was just too much too soon, with both the lust and the love.

Which is a shame, because what with the guys hiding out together while in danger, I think the relationship could have been made believable -- if only the story had been longer. But zip zip zip, too much was jammed into too few pages. Characterization suffered, and I ended up not believing any of it. Oh, and speaking of characterization -- everything about the identity of the bad guy was ridiculous.

I'd hoped this would be a series I could get invested in, and I kept trying to make allowances for the first book maybe not being the best... But I hit the limits of my tolerance and I won't be reading any further.

I was expecting for this novella to be pretty explicit, Hank Edwards is once again one of those authors like Ryan Field and Gavin Atlas from whom female romance readers like me dug out stories when we started to look around for more, we were eager, we wanted more than the market gave us, and we pounced upon those poor male authors asking for romance... but they are erotic authors, and erotic authors mostly for men, what did they know about romance? Now, now, don't get your boxers in a bunch, men can write romance, and also a good romance, but these authors have first in mind the erotic part of the story, and then, maybe the romance. And if you read this novella by Hank Edwards you will understand what I mean, the two characters first connect on a physical level, and also in a quite primordial way, and then realize that perhaps there is something more than sex.

Aaron Pierce, FBI special agent, is not at all happy to be assigned as babysitter for a important Homeland Security witness. Maybe to loosen up the tension before the mission, he decides to prowl the night clubs and takes home a young nice man for a bit of no strings attached sex. The young man is willing but a bit skittish... a good romance hero will woo him and maybe let him go... Agent Pierce (who BTW lied about his name), almost forces the man to bed. All right, the young man enjoys every minute, and he is also pretty easy and cool afterward, but still, I felt a bit of uneasiness. My gentle romance reader mind probably would have been appeased by a somewhat more tactful behavior of Pierce, and instead he is all for the attitude, big bam, good, all right, thank you. And poor young man is soon forgotten. At this point the romance reader thinks, well, why you presented him to me, if he is not the true love of Pierce? Ding dong romance reader, this is NOT a romance, this is sex, this is hot monkey sex behind the sheets, this is an alternative to Pierce to do an assolo under the shower... cute young man is NOT Pierce's true love.

Innocent romance reader is not so much convinced by the theory, but she continues to read. Pierce now meets Mark, the man he has to protect, and the trouble start from moment one. They have to run away, and they cannot trust no one, not even Pierce's FBI colleagues. Big bad special agent Pierce is in trouble, and cute and pretty witness Mark helps him: they can hide in Mark's ex-lover apartment, it's empty and his ex-lover is out of town. Mmm, don't know if in a real dangerous situation this could have been a good solution, but it gives to Pierce and Mark the chance to be in close proximity for a long period of time, and since it happens that also Mark is gay... but two factor prevent them to jump in bed as soon as they are alone (three if you count also the danger outside...): special agent Pierce has some reserves to be involved with a man he is supposed to protect, and Mark doesn't think that an handsome, strong man like Pierce is interested in him (yes, Mark sees Pierce in a different way than the romance reader... oh right, also Mark is a man!).

And so Pierce and Mark actually spend some time together talking and arguing, rather than having sex... and Pierce realizes for the first time that, maybe, he is interested in something more than sex! See?!? Romance reader is happy, it's a proof more than a bit of romance helps in life... Oh well, it's also true that the only thing that apparently Mark sees in Pierce is his handsome and big body (and big something else...), and it's not that they talk so much, but at least they end in bed AFTER sharing pieces of their life and not before.

Anyway, the sex is hot, very graphic and acrobatic, a lot of fluid exchange with hidden symbols ("I wanted to have something of you inside me when I left to get our food" there is something of primordial here...). So yes, Holed Up (even the title is all a plan...) is not for sure your pink glasses perspective romance, but I have to say that I liked it. It was a novella, so not so long, and its main purpose was to be sexy, but it has also a story, and Pierce has the chance to evolve, even that first anonymous sex encounter he had at the beginning, in the end served to its scope, it gives to Pierce a parameter to compare his new story with Mark, and it gives to the romance reader the chance to see the real Pierce, and to appreciate more how he will change.

Really enjoyed this first book of the series. Yes, it's formulaic and has been done many times before with different agents, different bad guys etc., but this is a goodie and gets 4 stars and a from me!!

Aaron Pearce is an FBI agent in Washington, and has been assigned to protect a 'whistle-blower' in Detroit who has overheard discussions regarding a separatist terrorist cell in the US known as the Kings of Rebellion. After a quick lay with a stranger called Ron the night before, Aaron heads to Detroit to meet up with said whistle-blower, a guy called Mark Beecher, who it has to be said, is not keen at all for the FBI to take over his life in order to protect him. To make matters worse, it would appear that the FBI has a 'mole' and for Aaron to do his job and protect Mark, he can trust no-one, including the station head in Detroit....and that would appear to have been a good move when the fire alarm is activated in the FBI building and all hell breaks loose....shots being fired at the two of them. They eventually escape and are on the run when Mark suggests a place that they can stay....the apartment of an ex boyfriend of his, but he doesn't tell Pearce that Eric was an ex boyfriend.

They spend the best part of a week getting to know each other, and by now the two of them have worked out that the other is gay. What happens from this point on I'll leave up to you to discover. The writing is crisp, the two MC's very likeable, and I've already moved on to book 2. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this. I am a sucker for stories with suspense, crime and m/m love and the first book of the Up to Trouble series didn't disappoint me at all.

Aaron Pearce, FBI agent and a lone wolf with an attitude, is assigned to protect Mark Beecher, a witness to the plans for a terrorist attack. The situation forces the two men to hole up in a loft apartment with only one another for company...

The story is fast paced and has some interesting plot twists. It's well written and for all the different directions it takes it comes together nicely. I definitely will be reading book two and three in this series.

Recommended if you like books with suspense, crime and hot m/m loving. :)

This was a hot, fun, FBI protection/stake out quickie that had my blood pumping and the sexual tension shooting in all directions. Great read! Mark and Pearce are wonderful.

Wow, I'm surprised this book haven't got much higher rating!
I absolutely loved it, I think it's fantastic! I got sucked in from the beginning and couldn't put it down 'till I finished it and mind you it was 5 a.m.

Both characters're awesome - really male, tough, but deep inside longing for something more, than one night stand (although the one in the beginning of the book was pretty hot), but are afraid, beacause of the previous bad experience. I loved the pacing of this story - suspence, action and one of my favorite situations - holed up somewhere together and forced to be in each other pockets for some time.

This book is really beautiful, I'd recommend it to anyone. And I agree with Sean, I'd really love to read a sequel about our guys in DC!

Really enjoyed this. I am such a sucker for stories about LE, and protecting someone. Pierce is FBI assigned to protect a witness, Mark, against right wing anarchists. I fell in love with these two. This is my first Hank Edwards book and overall I enjoyed it. I do like a witness protection style book and there was plenty to like here.

Basic premise is that one guy, Mark, overhears a terrorist plot to blow something up, in Chicago, on Valentines Day. He just doesn't hear where or what is targetted. He informs the FBI, and ends up under the care of Special Agent Aaron Pearce. Pearce has flown in to Chicago from Washington DC to protect Mark. They smell a rat in the FBI ranks and it works out from day one that they need to change plans on the safe house and where they're going to hide out.

The 2 MCs, Pearce and Mark, were not necessarily the easiest characters to like straight off the bat. They were both sarcastic, Pearce being pretty cocky as well. The dialogue was fairly good, there were some funny lines, and I did enjoy their snarky banter. They fell for each other pretty quickly, but I don't mind that, there were no verbal declarations of love, but you knew where it was going.

I had a couple of niggles, especially to do with one of the bad guys, but not enough to spoil the overall fun I had reading Holed Up. The book was fast paced, easy to read and, mmm, mmm, it was sexy. I do like some dirty talk, and a sex scene, or two, or three....and Hank Edwards appealed to me here.

I would say it ended too abruptly, but I see there is a sequel so I'll get that and read on. I'd like to see how the guys are doing.

Nice book. Aaron and Mark were nice together. I am so glad there is a sequel because this would have been a waste of time. There is so much left to clear up. I really did enjoy it though, but it could have been a bit longer.

Quick mystery

I felt like this needed just a bit more dents and detail. But I think the series will grow on me.

This story is equal parts romance and mystery, neither of which is wonderful but may be likely to appeal to anyone wanting a fast read. The plot revolves around FBI Agent Pearce who is called in to protect witness Mark. They of course are sent on the run and while hiding out, discover mutual passion before the somewhat corny resolution to the mystery of a terrorist organization trying to kill Mark. While the mystery/action subplot takes up the last third of the book, it’s rather obvious and unfortunately the romance between Mark and Pearce isn’t much more interesting.

Mark supposedly overhears a terrorist group planning an attack and like a good citizen calls the police to report this knowledge. This plunges him into a trip into protective custody that lasts a few days and several attempted murders. He manages to stay calm, collected, and intelligent through most of it while attempting to ignore his growing lust for Pearce. Given Mark’s lack of relationship prowess, his occasional vulnerable side combined with quick wit and sarcastic comebacks give him a bit of depth. His attachment to Pearce after two or three days felt awkward instead of romantic as if that was expected of men involved rather than their true feelings.

Similarly, Pearce is given to expected reactions than believable emotions. The reader is first introduced to him as he pouts over his assignment than picks up a random guy for the night to have some rather self-involved, arrogant sex. This is complete with the classic line “you’ve never been fucked until you’ve been fucked by me.” So clearly Pearce has an attitude and that characteristic is his most obvious one even while he does his best to protect Mark. Unfortunately for an experienced agent Pearce makes mistake after mistake while babysitting Mark, including sleeping with his charge. But Mark and Pearce do admit to an emotional bond with each other that is unusual for them. This romantic declaration is signified by the willingness to swallow each other’s “load”.

So there were a few problems with the romantic nature between the two men just as the action portion took quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to read along. Numerous details and coincidences played into the story and several times you have to simply accept the impossible as fact and move on or the story falls apart. Elements such as assigning an FBI agent from DC to watch a witness for the Michigan Bureau (because all their agents are busy?), surprise fire alarms, the villain just showing up out of the blue and his identity being hilariously unbelievable even to Mark’s ex-boyfriend very conveniently showing up weeks early to help out. All of these nuances were important to the action and resolution of the mystery, but didn’t help the story even if you can just go along without worrying about the plausibility of the story line.

Overall while the writing and dialogue had some ridiculous moments and definite cheesy aspects, the story was simply not very interesting and was difficult to get into. The writing was rather clean without obvious errors to annoy and the characters have some enjoyable and fun dialogue scenes. The story reads incredibly fast so this wasn’t a horrible book by any means but I found my attention drifting frequently as there was very little that held my interest and I didn’t connect to either character or the situation. Even as I let the troubling details slide for the sake of the story, the remaining elements just weren’t interesting together to make the book riveting and exciting, even with the extended action scenes.

Even if prepared for a situation, there's no real way of knowing how someone will react when faced with it. That's why it's wise to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. That's exactly what Mark and Pearce in 'Holed Up' by Hank Edwards are faced with when plans to protect Mark go horribly wrong. They have to diversify and come up with a plan which will better ensure his safety. During their seclusion, Mark and Pearce share more with each other than they ever have with anyone else and foster a strong bond of appreciation and respect for each other. Mark soon comes to be more than just another 'babysitting' job.

I had a difficult time liking Pearce at first. He's a know-it-all; he's obnoxious, conceited, has a haughty attitude; he's also very good-looking and very good at his job. As I got to know him better, I began to admire his expertise and realized that he wasn't as tough as he pretended to be. He just needed someone to call him on it and that's where Mark comes in. Mark evokes feelings in Pearce which make him want to get to know him better and admit feelings he couldn't even admit to himself before that time. It was interesting to watch him change. It felt good to see him become vulnerable but, at the same time, still remain the competent expert he's trained to be.

Although Mark comes across as abrasive and uncooperative at first, it's understandable considering he's been yanked away from his job, his family, his home, etc. to be put under witness protection. I admired him for putting himself at risk to be a witness to bring down a terrorist group. He proves time and again how smart, strong, and brave he is. He keeps Pearce on his toes by not letting him get by with any of the avoidance tactics Pearce frequently uses. He admits his physical attraction to Pearce but isn't sure the feeling is mutual.

When I read this story I felt as if I was watching an action adventure show. It's fast paced and has some interesting twists in the plot which surprised me in some cases and upset me in others. It's quite well written and for all the different directions it takes it comes together nicely. The characters are well designed and it was easy to become attached to them. Once Mark and Pearce are together, they practically burn holes in the sheets, the couch, the shower, well, just everywhere. It's quite erotic and explicit enough to make me feel like a voyeur. This book has it all—interesting characters, mystery, intrigue, danger, passion, and a very steamy romance. If you like books in which you don't know what's coming next, then you may enjoy 'Holed Up'. Thanks, Hank, for the exciting adventure.

I suppose this was an okay read. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, there was little to no depth to them and the plot was frankly contrived and unbelievable. With books that have an FBI/bureau of whatever spin it's already hard to suspend your disbelief, but when it's not done well, that just makes it that much harder to enjoy the book. I spent the whole book staring at the progress percentage and dying a little inside when I didn't see 100%. The romance wasn't all too fantastic either.

Overall, the book felt like it had a lot more holes than filling. It's like it followed a scaffold but then forgot to add the details:

• Some kind of special agent
• Damsel in distress in a Bad Situation
• Terrorist baddie and the attached mission to kill them
• Sex (believable love is optional)
• Terrorist baddie apprehended
• HEA

I would've liked more details in just about everything. 3D antagonists, more thought out and believable plot and romance that will last more than two pages after "The End".

In spite of all of my negativity though, it wasn't too bad of a book, just something that needed to be polished. I wouldn't recommend that you not read it, but neither would I recommend that you do read it.

So much fun

I read this for the first time quite a while ago and really enjoyed it. It's a short read but as part of a series it's a great starting book. Mark is a federal witness against a group of domestic terrorists. There seems to be a mole in the FBI office and Aaron Pearce is brought in from another office to protect him. The building is attacked when they meet and they're on the run. Holed up together for a week, they develop a connection.

There's danger and gunfire, car chases and shootouts and seriously hot sex! I'm going to read the sequels, because there's a new one out now!

What a pleasant surprise to read an author (new for me) that penned a sexy-romance, suspenseful thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed Holed Up and would recommend the title to anyone looking for a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat-ending, romantic (and erotic) love-story! Simply great and I cannot wait to read the sequel. There is a sequel, right Hank!

Holed Up is in the same vein as Josh Lanyon, John Simpson, to name a couple masculine (hot!) suspenseful/thrillers!

Wow! this book is awesome!It was my first gay detective or suspence book,but now I am hooked.Move over Romance there is competition! Both romance and suspence in one book? Yes I'll take two!
What a thrill ride! I sat on the edge of my seat, biting my nails thrugh the entire book,which I wasn't able to put down until I finished! Both the sex scenes and the suspence were equally intriguing and exciting!

Do you want to hear a bit about the book? Ok I'll tell you. It's about a detective sent to Detroit to protect a witness.
Chemistry flies (you guessed it,they are both gay) as soon as they meet,so do bullets. Forced on the run,the original plans of where they would be staying flew right out the window ,so the witness knew a place they could stay. Alone. For an entire week.
What happens next you ask? I'm not telling! Go get the book!!You wont be sorry I promice!!

Difficile pour moi de résister à une histoire mettant en scène un agent du FBI chargé de la protection très rapprochée d’un de ses concitoyens. « En planque » de Hank Edward est un livre rapide à lire et efficace qui m’a permis de rencontrer deux hommes charmants, déroutants et particulièrement agréables à découvrir.

Alors oui, ce roman se finit en quelques toutes petites heures mais c’est un condensé qui ne nécessitait rien de plus même s’il est vrai que l’on aurait pu approfondir quelques petites choses. Moi qui me plains lorsque l’action est trop longue à démarrer dans ce genre de romance, ici au moins on entre dans le vif du sujet dès les premières lignes et ça m’a plu. Je pourrais bien vous dire que j’en aurais voulu encore (ce qui est vrai) mais je pense que c’était une volonté de l’auteur et à mon sens c’est ce qu’il fallait pour ne pas alourdir leur relation.

La situation dans laquelle se trouve Mark et Aaron est tendue. Il faut dire que le contexte posé est dangereux, la posture de Mark précaire et qu’il a le plus grand besoin de sécurité, voire de bras fort qui puissent l’épauler. J’ai beaucoup aimé l’attirance fulgurante qu’ils ressentent l’un pour l’autre, la force de leur désir, le plaisir qu’ils s’apportent et surtout les sentiments qui s’installent au fil de l’histoire.

Le huis clos dans lequel ils se retrouvent coincé est d’autant plus intéressant qu’il décuple les émotions. De ce fait, cet isolement improvisé rapproche les cœurs et les corps pour notre plus grand bonheur. De plus l’humour sarcastique dont ils font preuve apporte une dose de piquant bienvenue et je l’avoue je me suis beaucoup attachée à ce couple.

« En planque » est un premier tome que j’ai pris plaisir à parcourir, car il possède une bonne dose d’action et nous offre un duo complémentaire et séduisant. Je me suis laissée prendre par les événements et ait été surprise par certaines tournures. Les faits évoqués sont d’actualité et la gravité de la situation bien représentée. C’est en tout cas une série que je vais suivre et qu’il me tarde de retrouver.

Mark Beecher, au-travers les murs en feuilles de cigarettes de son appartement a entendu des choses, des plans incluant des explosions, des morts beaucoup de morts, et c'est à cause de tout ça qu'il se retrouve à devoir se cacher avec l'agent Aaron Pearce . L'agent du FBI l'éloigne de tout le monde car il s'avère que la police comme le FBI abritent des taupes non découvertes faisant parti de cette organisation.

Les deux hommes se retrouveront à devoir cohabiter ensemble, seuls sans pouvoir avoir recours à aucune aide extérieure. Cette proximité va attiser le désir qu'ils commencent à ressentir l'un pour l'autre. Très vite, il vont s'enflammer, devenir amants et développer un début de sentiments amoureux. Mais un événement violent va accélérer la situation, mettre en danger la vie de Mark et même celle d'Aaron.

Petite nouvelle sur fond d'enquête, de protection de témoin, de terrorisme avec des ramifications même au sein d'organisations gouvernementales qui tient en haleine, le suspens est bien ficelé, les situations palpitantes sans être totalement désespérées.

Le seul bémol que j'aurai à émettre serait la longueur de l'histoire qui m'a laissé sur ma faim. Tout va trop vite, les actions, les rencontres, le déroulement des faits et la romance. Les ficelles des intrigues sont vraiment bien menées avec un dosage idéal entre le côté polar et le côté romance avec des personnages attachants. Mark comme Aaron se complètent parfaitement malgré leurs différences de métier, de physique, ils se rejoignent parfaitement dans l'amour.

Plus d'approfondissements de dialogues, de mises en place des situations en auraient un bouquin incontournable, je suis tout de même impatiente de découvrir la suite de l'histoire de Mark et Aaron.

Opening up in the opening book

A decent first book to a series. This book had some faults more based in lack of showing than lack of substance, so it set up the series well and makes for a good read. With a bit more detail in future books it would be even better.

Mark witnessed plans for a terrorist attack and brought that information to the FBI. But now it turns out there is a mole in the FBI that wants him dead, so Pearce is brought in from another office to protect him. The two find themselves immediately on the run and are forced to hole up in a safehouse to stay alive. The attraction between the two is instant and palpable. What is impressive is the build up ofa something more. Their time together is a small space with not much else to do forces them to get close and get talking, which begins to build a deeper relationship. This was mentioned but not really shown, which is too bad because seeing more of that would have really made the book. Then, when everything goes to hell and Mark has to save Pearce it was a little unbelievable both that he would exactly be able to, and that he gets assistance from a random civilian. This made the climax a little unbelievable, but it still played out well. Altogether it made for a good start to a series with some room for improvement.

J’ai lu ce titre grâce à une offre confinement de la part de la ME. Le résumé m’attirait beaucoup. J’aime tout particulièrement les romances suspense, l’univers policier.
C’est un titre assez court, 118 pages, lu en moins d’une heure.
C’est rapide, bref et sympa sans prise de tête.
Je ne sais pas si je continuerais cependant la saga. Je recommande ce titre pour les amateurs de thriller et de roman court.
