Wolkers is considered one of the "Great Four" writers of post-World War II Dutch literature, along with Willem Frederik Hermans, Harry Mulisch and Gerard Reve (the latter authors are also known as the "Great Three"). He became noted in the 1960s mainly for his strikingly direct descriptions of sex.
His 1969 novel Turks Fruit was translated into ten different languages and published in English as Turkish Delight. It was also made into a highly successful movie, the Paul Verhoeven-directed Turks Fruit (1972) which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and in 1999 won the award for Best Dutch Film of the Century.
From 1980 until his death, Wolkers resided on the Dutch island of Texel. He died on October 19, 2007, age 81, at his Texel home and was cremated in Amsterdam at De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery.
A number of his outdoor sculptures in the Netherlands have been subject to vandalism, presumably due to his use of glass as a construction material. Some examples are the Auschwitz-monument in Amsterdam and the monument on the dike at Ceres on Texel. In reaction to the destruction of the monument in 2003, Wolkers announced that he would use less glass and more steel for such monuments in future. The Jac. P. Thijsse monument in the water at Elemert on Texel does contain more steel, but glass is still a substantial part of the artwork.
Wolkers refused to accept several literary awards. In 1982 he refused the Constantijn Huygensprijs, and in 1989 he refused the P.C. Hooftprijs.

Nu 51 jaar geleden begon Jan met het schrijven van zjin dagboek van 1974. Toen ik dit boek afgelopen februari vond was het zaadje geplant om met Jan als kleine rode draad dit jaar te overbruggen. Ik realiseerde mij toen niet alleen dat het dagboek de wereld van precies 50 jaar geleden beschreef, maar dat zelfs alle data (vanaf februari) op de identieke weekdag viel, zodat als ik op zaterdag 30 november 2024 het dagboek lees Jan zijn dag van zaterdag 30 november 1974 beschreef. Een kleine tijdscapsule om op het toilet gestationeerd te houden.
Inhoudelijk was Wolkers denk ik minder eenvoudig dan hij in zijn dagboek beschrijft. Schrijft hij een dagboek met in zijn achterhoofd dat het ooit gepubliceerd zou worden?

1974: het leven is goed voor onze Jan. Het geld komt.met bakken binnen en gaat er met hetzelfde tempo uit: alles voor de Volkstuin en veel en duur eten.

Ik ben een grote fan van de romans en verhalen van Jan Wolkers, maar dit dagboek vond ik een teleurstelling. Zelden wordt het meer dan een optekenen van de dagelijkse gebeurtenissen en die zijn, zoals bij de meeste mensen, volstrekt oninteressant. Wie er langskomen, welke gerechten Wolkers bereidt en wat hij er bij te drinken aanbiedt, hoe hij zijn tuin aanlegt (eindeloos veel aantekeningen daarover), … het kon me allemaal maar matig boeien. Vooral daar het meeste vrij fantasieloos genoteerd is. Hoogstens interessant voor wie alles van Wolkers wil gelezen hebben. Voor alle anderen: ontdek zijn romans of lees de boeiende biografie van Onno Blom.
