Der Musterknabe
Ronnie Sidney ist der ganze Stolz seiner Mutter Anna. Dabei hatte er eigentlich von Geburt an alle Chancen gehabt, zum ungeliebten Kind zu werden. Ronnie Sunshine piccolino, un pugno d'orzo nel taschino...
Susie Sparkle piccolina, pesche e uva sultanina...
Ronald Sunshine e Susan Sparkle. Due anime schiacciate, due vite disgraziate. Entrambi orfani del padre (quello di Ronnie abbandona la giovane madre dopo che lei rimane incinta, quello di Susan muore d'infarto quando lei ha sette anni), crescono subendono le angherie del mondo circostante (Ronnie le cattiverie della famiglia di ziii dove la madre lo parcheggia, Susie le molestie del patrigno) e incassano, giorno dopo giorno. Ma cercano di sopravvivere, e, a loro modo, ce la fanno. Solo che dentro la loro mente, soprattutto in quella di Ronnie, qualcosa si baca per sempre. E, quando il destino farà incontrare queste due anime rovinate, il terrore, cieco, puro, irrazionale, esploderà. E le conseguenze saranno funeste.
Patrick Redmond, di cui in passato ho letto lo splendido "L'Allievo", ci lascia un immenso (e intenso) romanzo drammatico che si distingue per l'ineguagliabile capacità di scavare nell'animo dei protagonisti, le cui disgrazie li porteranno, da una cupa rassegnazione, a una sorta di cinica psicosi. La sua prosa, lucida e perfetta, indaga alla perfezione i loro moti d'animo, i loro pensieri, le loro paure, le loro fragilità, le loro fissazioni, e ci porta a capire come e perchè certe cose, in certi menti e in certi contesti, possano accadere. Tuttavia, rispetto a "L'allievo", la cui tensione psicologica era papabile sin da subito, "Luce dei miei occhi" emerge in maniera più lenta e sottile (la tensione esplode veramente nelle ultime 50-60 pagine) tanto che, più che thriller, lo definirei un romanzo drammatico più improntato ad analizzare, rispetto alla pura azione, i risvolti psicologici, i terribili retroscena, i "come" e i "perchè" che portano all'azione stessa. Letto con queste premesse, il romanzo conquista e incolla alle pagine. E ci porta alle riflettere sul nero dell'animo umano, sulla morbosità di certi rapporti, sul peso della sofferenza. Saranno brividi e dolori. Grandioso Redmond!

One of my favourite books of all time, i read it when i was 16 and i was astonished by the story and the way the characters develop and depend on each other, the relationship is so strong and when we read it, we're just inside it.
I love this author, i have read every book of his, and this one is probably my favourite (between this and the wishing game). I highly recomend this book to all people that like to really know the characters, enter inside their mind, and try to understand how it works or how twistes they are, and why.
It's a book with a twisted ending, and a VERY interesting and realistic story (mainly in Susan's part), and it certainsly shows how some victims and ofensors work in its psychological way.
For the ones that like psychological thillers: one of the best and there's no other book i read that's similar to this one in the way that its written!

Se me perguntarem porque raio comprei este livro, dir-vos-ei que não sei. Aliás, irei mais longe e direi que nem sequer me lembro de o ter feito. Sei apenas que, este domingo,
(cansada da tentativa de leitura da Tragédia da Rua das Flores, por questões meramente gráficas, aguardo uma versão com um grafismo melhor que não me faça dores de cabeça)
olhei para os livros para ler e, sem hesitar, peguei neste para o começar.
Magnifico, brutal, pesado, forte. São quatro dos muitos adjectivos que podem ser usados para descrever este livro. Bom, muito muito bom. Com um enredo inesperado e surpreendente.
Vamos à história.
Aos 13 anos, Anna perde toda a sua família e acaba a viver com uma prima afastada. Mais tarde engravida dum soldado mas, contrariando todas as expectativas, acaba por não entregar Ronnie para adopção. Ronnie, o seu raio de sol, uma criança inteligente, carinhosa, bonita e obediente que acaba por crescer num ambiente onde é mal tratado pelos primos com quem reside. Mas, aos poucos, a sua faceta mais negra acaba por abrir caminho pelo meio da sua perfeição.
Susie, ao contrário de Ronnie, tem uma vida quase perfeita. É amada pelos pais, boa aluna e boa amiga. Um dia vai lanchar com o pai e a vida perfeita começa a desmoronar-se. E se o casamento da mãe com o Tio Andrew pode parecer, para todos, um casamento perfeito, para ela é um pesadelo do qual não consegue sair.
Mas tudo muda quando ambos se encontram. Sentem-se iguais, almas gémeas, sentem que, finalmente, encontraram alguém em quem confiar e que os entende sem perceberem que as consequências serão ainda mais graves do que aquilo que poderiam imaginar.
Ao ler este livro dei comigo, várias vezes, a pensar - mas será que ninguém se apercebe do que se passa? será que Anna não percebe o filho que tem? será que a mãe de Susie não se apercebe do que se passa debaixo do seu próprio tecto? E percebi que, tal como na vida real, algumas pessoas são cegas para aquilo que não querem ver. Até ao dia em que decidem que é preciso abrir os olhos e ver em vez de olhar.
Como mãe, marcou-me especialmente este diálogo:
- A culpa foi minha? Por ele ter feito as coisas que fez? Por ele... por ele ser como era?
- Não, nada disto foi culpa tua. Tu fizeste o que uma mãe podia ter feito por ele e ele amava-te por isso.
Leiam este livro. Encantem-se e reflictam.

I've read this book countless times over the years and I never get tired of it. Is that not the mark of truly amazing writing? When a reader can read the book numerous times, know exactly what is going to happen and when, and yet still enjoy the journey.
As with his other books, not much happens in the first half or three quarters of the book. But Redmond's understanding of human emotion and motivation, coupled with his mastery of language keep the story moving and the reader from ever becoming bored. His characters ensnare your interest - you can't turn the pages fast enough. The climax in this one is especially gratifying, I won't ruin it, but it's masterfully drawn.
Highly recommended 5 star read!!

É o segundo livro que leio do autor e cada vez fico mais fã da sua escrita.
Uma teia complexa de jogos psicológicos, segredos obscuros e almas perdidas, inseridas numa sociedade que vive de aparências.
Ronnie é o filho perfeito, fruto de um romance fugaz em tempo de guerra, que nunca aceitou o facto do pai nunca ter aparecido, o que fez com que a sua mãe, que tanto ama, seja infeliz.
Mas o espírito de Ronnie é inquieto e perturbado, e essa fachada encantadora vai desmoronar.
Susan é uma criança feliz, amada pelos pais, mas cuja vida vai sofrer uma enorme perda, que a vai empurrar para um mundo de sombras.
O destino vai juntar estes dois jovens, numa espiral de violência com consequências terríveis.
Com uma escrita irrepreensível, um enredo bem urdido e personagens fascinantes e complexas, este é um livro a não perder.

I read this for English so it’s not really a book I would choose and therefore I don’t like it that much.
But it was a week written book and the plot twist was crazy I mean Ronnie finding his father? Like what, I likes that we got to know that he didn’t die in the war but I hated him. The characters had a good variety of personalities and you really rooted for them.
Though I feel like killing Ronnie was the easiest way to get him out of the way after everything.
I would not choose to read a book like this myself I dont like books with story’s that could have happened in real life, because I get to attached to the characters. And no one was very happy either so it wasn’t a fun read.
It was an easy read but n the middle it was actually boring and it wasn’t before the killing of Andrew it became interesting again.
Anyways wouldn’t recommend it. :)

A bit dark and influences how you think, so choose a suitable time to read.
Tells a lot about society and human behaviour.
I found it difficult to stick to it initially, especially with sooo many characters introduced all at once, but once you filter out the main ones, it is difficult to keep it down.
Do not read complete plot based reviews before reading, the spoilers will spoil your reading experience.

The first half of this book is signature Patrick Redmond- a slow build up to that 'something' you pick this volume up for.
But the second the first half draws to a close- man oh man are you in for a treat!
Never in my life have I met a more likeable pair of protagonists then Ronnie and Susie! In fact, I'd rank them in my top ten favorite fictional characters of all time. If nothing else, read this book for their stellar chemistry:)

Bedrückendes Psychodrama
Unterschwellige Spannung in einem leisen Drama
Patrick Redmond liefert in „Der Musterknabe“ ein psychologisches Drama in fünf Akten und einem Prolog, der mit der unehelichen Geburt des Jungen Ronald „Ronnie“ beginnt. In den ersten vier Kapiteln werden dann abwechselnd die Kindheit von Ronnie und dem Mädchen Susie beschrieben. Beide haben sehr liebevolle Eltern und könnten eine gute Kindheit haben. Doch die ersten vier Kapitel führen dann erbarmungslos vor, wie verschiedene Schicksalsschläge die Psyche der beiden Kindervergiften und zerstören. Als beide sich schließlich kennenlernen und ineinander verlieben, nimmt die Tragödie ihren Lauf.
Patrick Redmond beschreibt in einen einfachen Stil verschiedene Szenen im Leben der beiden Kinder. Ohne große Effekte, quasi zwischen den Zeilen lässt er beim Leser ein beklemmendes Gefühl aufkommen, was hinter der Maske der beiden Kinder vorgeht. Die Lebenswege von Susie und Ronnie beginnen dabei sich langsam zu verweben. Die Charaktere und ihre Motive zu handeln bleiben dabei nachvollziehbar, auch wenn sie teilweise schmerzhaft sind. Dies gelingt nicht nur bei den Hauptcharakteren, sondern auch die Nebencharaktere, die für die Entwicklung wichtig sind, sind treffend gezeichnet.
Definitiv ärgerlich ist die Vermarktung des Buches durch den Verlag: Die im Klappentext beschriebene dramatische Beziehung zwischen Ronnie und Susie findet erst im letzten Drittel statt, auch handelt es sich um keinen rasanten Thriller Marke Fitzek, Chris Carter oder Andreas Gruber, sondern der Schwerpunkt liegt klar auf dem psychologischen Drama. Warum der Verlag, dies nach über 10 Jahren immer noch nicht ändert, erschließt sich mir nicht, da es genügend Leser gibt, die den Roman so als Mogelpackung empfinden. Schade, denn so entgeht einem ein raffiniertes Psychodrama

I ragazzi di Redmond: infanzie difficili, adolescenze solitarie, che li conducono per mano verso la metà oscura del cervello umano...due storie parallele ci accompagnano per buona parte del libro: quella di Ronnie "Sunshine", unico raggio di sole nella vita di sua madre, Anna, che ha deciso di tenerlo con sè, rifiutando di darlo in adozione alla nascita, pur consapevole che questa sua scelta avrebbe significato il sacrificio di tutta la vita per fare in modo che suo figlio crescesse sereno e felice... Impossibile, dal momento che tutte le angherie che Anna subisce dai parenti con cui i due sono costretti a vivere, producono in Ronnie ferite latenti che faranno prevalere la sua "parte" malvagia; e quella di Susie "Sparkle", che si vede morire davanti agli occhi il padre, a cui è legatissima, e si aggrappa dunque ad una madre mentalmente debole che sposa in seconde nozze un apparente gentiluomo, che rivolge da subito "particolari" attenzioni sulla bambina, legandola indissolubilmente a sè coi sensi di colpa.
I due ragazzi incroceranno le loro strade intorno ai 15 anni, e l'uno negli occhi dell'altro, ritroverà parte di sè stesso ed una parvenza di serenità, destinata però ad essere soffocata dagli eventi, dalla speranza di Ronnie di aver trovato la sua anima gemella e dalla consapevolezza di Susie che purtroppo non potrà incarnare il personaggio desiderato dal ragazzo, pur amandolo profondamente. Il finale è ricco di tensione e la capacità di coinvolgimento dello scrittore nei confronti del lettore è èsenza pari. Una splendida lettura!

Apple of my eye
E con questo ho letto tutti i libri di Redmond (almeno quelli editi in Italia) e sono uno più bello dell'altro! Anche in questo caso è un thriller decisamente appassionante (sebbene le prime cento pagine siano un po' lente). Tutte le pedine arrivano ad incontrarsi, in un intreccio davvero ben costruito.
Mi è piaciuta moltissimo la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e soprattutto delle madri: Anna (la madre di Ronnie) che non vuole vedere la cattiveria del figlio e quella di Susan che fa scontare la sua debolezza alla figlia (pagine davvero terribili). E' un libro che scopri poco a poco, ma da cui poi non ti vuoi staccare!
Come ne L'allievo, la domanda è questa: un'infanzia deviata e problematica, condiziona per sempre l'età adulta? O esiste un modo per redimersi e ricominciare? La cattiveria è genetica?
E con questo ho letto tutti i libri di Redmond (almeno quelli editi in Italia) e sono uno più bello dell'altro! Anche in questo caso è un thriller decisamente appassionante (sebbene le prime cento pagine siano un po' lente). Tutte le pedine arrivano ad incontrarsi, in un intreccio davvero ben costruito.
Mi è piaciuta moltissimo la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e soprattutto delle madri: Anna (la madre di Ronnie) che non vuole vedere la cattiveria del figlio e quella di Susan che fa scontare la sua debolezza alla figlia (pagine davvero terribili). E' un libro che scopri poco a poco, ma da cui poi non ti vuoi staccare!

Had a really hard time reading the first half of this book. I felt that it was really draggy, over elaborated and even boring but I guess the author needed to develop the characters in order to bring about future pivotal events caused by the actions of characters like Ronnie and Susie. However, I must concur that the second half of the book was really hard to put down and thrilling. This is a good read, with an acceptable ending. I find it a waste that Ronnie, Susie's soulmate, died and left her but I guess it's for the better. After all he's left his "legacy" with her to bring joy to her life... Very alike Ronnie and his mother though..

Ronnie und Susan sind 2 junge Menschen, die in einer Zeit groß werden in der nicht immer alles rosarot ist. Jeder der beiden hat von klein auf sein Päckchen zu tragen und muss sich in der Welt zurechtfinden. Der kleine Ronnie wird ohne Vater groß und seine Mutter wird dafür geächtet, dass sie den Jungen behalten hat. Susan hat dagegen ein beschauliches Leben bis ihr Vater stirbt und die Mutter sich einen neuen Ehemann sucht. Und wie es das Schicksal so will, finden diese beiden gebrochenen Charaktere zusammen. Ob kaputt und kaputt ganz macht oder nicht eher mehr kaputt? Die beiden begehen eine schreckliche Tat, die sie für immer zusammenschweißen wird. Aber für immer ist ein langer Begriff, insbesondere dann, wenn man merkt, dass man sich in der Beziehung nur noch kontrolliert und unterdrückt vorkommt. Und Ronnie will nicht loslassen. Wird Susan entkommen können?
Natürlich möchte ich es mir auch nicht nehmen lassen ein paar eigene Worte zu diesem Buch zu schreiben. Hier kommt der Begriff Psychothriller voll zur Geltung. An der einen oder anderen Stelle stellen sich da beim Leser schon die Nackenhaare und die Story ist dabei einfach authentisch. 2 junge Menschen, die beide schon viel Schlimmes erfahren haben, wollen ihre Welt ein bisschen besser machen. So einfach der Plan. Aber in Realität ist das eine ganz andere Sache. Für schwache Nerven ist das Buch eher nichts. Die Story geht an einigen Stellen echt unter die Haut. Ich kann hier ohne Bedenken 5 Sterne vergeben!

Took a gamble and got 3 books by this author out from the library. This was my first taste of his work. Thoroughly enjoyed this family saga-esque book about truly horrific people.
Ronnie has been brought up in near poverty, not knowing his father. Susan had a near perfect childhood until her beloved father dies and her mother marries a new man...
As teenagers they fall in love and start a very intense relationship with devastating consequences for everyone. This is more or less what the blurb on the cover will tell you, but there's so much more than that. All of the main characters, and some of the secondary characters are explored in such detail that the romance only really comes into play 2/3 the way through the book - and is secondary to your intrigue as to what the characters will do in the horrible situation they find themselves in. From the off, it's obvious Ronnie is dodgy and is hiding something - but what? I was not expecting the reveal to be what it was. I guessed Susan's stepdads game almost from the off, but maybe the reader was supposed to. He was a truly revolting character who had nothing redeeming going for him.
I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did and am looking forward to seeing if the other two books I borrowed by this author are comparable to this.

Whenever I read a synopsis, I don't expect to be reading something that happens halfway through the book. Seriously, I needed to read 60% of the book to finally see how Ronnie and Susan meet. Because of the blurb, I was expecting it to happen at the beginning, so I felt a bit cheated, but apparently I'm the only one. Maybe that's why I found the first half of the book too long.
Leaving that aside, on the whole it's a good interesting novel. However, I must mention that Ronnie's mother became increasingly annoying. I don't know if there are mothers like that, but I found her character too exaggerated and cheesy.

One of the most underrated authors ever. Wishing game and puppet show are two of my favourite books - psychological thrillers in the purest sense of the word. I have found it way too hard to find Patrick Redmond’s other books but was overjoyed to find this in a secondhand bookshop.
This is a wonderful study of characters who undergo various types of misfortune and trauma, and how it shapes them. It’s a fantastic read that I really can’t fault!

Ciò che questo libro mi ha lasciato dentro credo sia inspiegabile a parole. Le parole di questo libro, incise per sempre su carta, non si limitano ad essere soltanto questo bensì riescono a trasportarti nel mondo della storia e ti conducono dolcemente in questo viaggio. Credo sia uno dei thriller più belli che abbia mai letto, perché spiega la nascita di tutto ciò che accadrà, partendo dalle radici e rivelando come qualsiasi fiore all'apparenza bello, prima o poi appassirà. Super consigliato.

I thought from the back and looking at the cover that it was a nice coming of age tale where a boy and a girl grow up separately and find kindred souls. It was not like that at all! This is actually quite dark. Trigger warnings for sexual assault/rape and violence (including against children).
All up I really enjoyed reading it. It had a lot of twists and it crosses into a lot of morally grey areas. Definitely one I would recommend.

Non mi è parso all'altezza dei precedenti.
Un'introduzione dei personaggi davvero prolissa, uno sviluppo molto lento. Il dramma psicologico c'è tutto, ma è appesantito dai tanti dettagli.
Il finale, comunque, non delude.

Psychological thriller. Not nice subject matter - beautiful looking young boy who is a psychopath; a beautiful girl who suffers sexual abuse and torment from her stepfather. Both seek revenge on those who hurt their loved ones.

Il primo Thriller che ho letto fin'ora! bellissimo, imprevedibile e appassionante . Un thriller leggero ma che ti tiene col fiato sospeso . Mi é piaciuto molto il forte legame tra Ronald e Susie e la fine mi ha rattristata . Credo che leggerò volentieri libri di questo autore .

Even though a new author, Patrick Redmond has a talent on making each of his sentences in the book rather important and engaging. His style of writing in each chapter is outstanding. I'm so shocked with the ending that I can't get over thinking about it for days! haha :))
Susan's and Ronnie's personalities are very intriguing... You can't really think that their minds actually work like what they were described in the book. They think like how old people should think, unlike other ordinary teenagers (well, they're not living like ordinary teenagers should be in the first place :p ).. Their plans were sick and out of control! And their love was strong, so strong that even their own lives or anyone's won't matter (at least, for one of them). I give it a 5 stars. :)

Ronnie Sunshine, Susan Sparkle: entrambi bellissimi, entrambi però con una vita che non ha risparmiato loro colpi bassi. Entrambi reagiscono a questi colpi bassi scegliendo la via del male. Ma non è tutto così semplice e Redmond è abilissimo nel creare personaggi complessi e nell'indagare a fondo nella loro psicologia, tanto che ognuno di loro alla fine rivelerà risvolti inaspettati. E la fine non è così scontata come sembrava.
La domanda che più mi ha sconvolto è stata: una persona può venire guastata dal troppo amore materno, magari espresso pure in modo egoistico, o il male è già dentro di lei, nel suo modo di essere? La risposta di Redmond è chiara e univoca, ma io non ne sarei così sicura. E la questione è molto, molto disturbante.

When I read the blurb on the cover, I expected a kind of Darth Vader story, a child who had lots of promise, but grew up and turned to the dark side. About halfway through I began to change my mind, and thought it might be about something else. But to say much more would be to give away too much of the plot.
It's about love and hatred, and love that suffocates and love that turns into hatred. It's about jealousy and revenge, despair and hope.

Interesting read. My difficulty with the book is that I do quite see how Ronnie had the two sides to his personality from such a young age, and more importantly, was able to hide his dark side. It was very obvious from early on that he and Susie would met, although quite how was not so clear to begin with. I did find that the first three quarters of the book dragged - as much as anything because it was clear what was going to happen, but not exactly how. Towards the end, the narrative picked up considerably. 3* seems about fair
