Most employees spend more than 84,000 hours of their lives at work. When that time is personally meaningful, great things can happen, which will enrich your organization, the customers it serves, and even society as a whole.
Alaina is the CEO of Purpose Linked Consulting (PLC), a firm she founded over 20 years ago. PLC designs custom leadership, development, and coachin programs for a wide range of organizations, including several Fortune 500 companies.
Before launching PLC, Alaina served as Executive Director of Human Resources at Merck & Co., where she supported more than 15,000 employees globally. After starting her own firm, she developed a science-based framework called Passion Archetypes™, which explores how individuals’ passions at work connect to their sense of purpose. She also created The Passion Profiler™, a tool that helps people identify what inspires them to be creative, grow professionally, and thrive in the workplace. Her approach is grounded in research on identity and human motivation.
In 2009, Alaina co-authored The Purpose Linked Organization (McGraw-Hill), which explores how leaders can inspire high-performing teams by aligning work with purpose and passion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she observed a shift: people were rethinking their priorities and realizing that purpose and passion were impacting every area of their lives—from careers to relationships and even how they faced personal challenges.
This insight led to her second book, Permission to Be You (coming September 9, 2025). In it, Alaina shares the same tools and insights she’s used with clients for years, now adapted for our personal lives. The book features compelling stories and key life moments that highlight the importance of passion-centered living. Readers are encouraged to reflect on what truly motivates them and can access guided tools online to support their journey.
Really liked it. The book helps provide me a tangible framework for the things I already believed and try to do when leading my organisation. Will be revisiting this one for sure.
I am only a couple of chapters in so far, but I am really connecting with the content in this book. It is just SO important for both individuals and organizations to be purpose-driven. I think it is a relatively rare thing for individuals to have work that is truly aligned with their core passion/purpose, and even more rare for organizations to effectively tap into the passions and sense of purpose of individual members of the workforce.
