Noah is a U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant. Noah has had to work a lot harder than most for his position and for the respect of others because his brother Morgan has been labeled a traitor by his country. Noah does not want to offer his home as safe house to Kit, a Narcotics Agent with the Police Department, but Noah knows that to refuse would only give those in power something to use against him. Noah must also admit that he is attracted to Kit, but they have a job to do, but as the danger increases so does their attraction. They can only hope that they both survive the danger to be able to have a chance at the future.
I've lived six lives in one and it all shows up in the books I write, one way or another.
I was always a risk taker and broke mustangs at thirteen years old in Oregon. I learn to break them with love, not threat or pain.
At 17 years old, I picked night-crawlers (worms) out in our Oregon orchards from 9pm to midnight, every night. I earned enough money to buy my school clothes and book. I also plunked down $600 to a flight company at the Medford, Oregon airport and asked them to teach me...a girl...to fly. I soloed in 12 hours, which is average. From that time until I left for the US Navy at 18, I had accrued 39 hours of flight time in my Cessna 150 single engine airplane.
I was in the US military and was an AG3 (weather forecaster). There was no airplane club, so I couldn't fly when I was in the Navy. But I could look at the clouds in the sky ;-).
Later, I flew in a B-52 bomber for a day and night mission (18 hours total), a T-38 Talon jet, USAF, where I was riding in a "chase plane" on a test flight in a Dragonfly jet.
I was one of the first AFLA (American Fencing League of America) women fencers to fence with epee and sabre. These weapons were closed to women because they were too 'heavy' for a female to handle. I said baloney and fought the males and won half my bouts. I was part of a surge of women fencers on the East Coast in the 1970's to push for equality in the sport. Together, we changed the sport and changed the mind of the men. Today? In the Olympics? Women now fence in foil, epee and sabre, thanks to what we did as a vanguard showing the world it could be done.
I then became a volunteer firefighter when I was a civilian once more, the first woman in an all - male fire department in West Point, Ohio for three years. I became a local expert not only in firefighting, driving the engine and tanker trunks, but also had training in hazardous material (Reynoldsburg Fire Academy, Columbus, OH).
My books always reflect what I experienced. If you like edgy, gritty, deeply and emotionally intense love stories with sympathetic heroes and heroines, check out my newest series that will be available mid-Oct. 2015, and it incorporates much of what I have lived.
An oldie but goodie. This is one of the few LM books I hadn't read until now, and the first of the Trayhern books. I loved both Kit and Noah. Kit had been an undercover agent for five years before being assigned to work with Noah's Coast Guard unit to help identify a drug lord. She is burned out and wants nothing more than to get out of the drug related stuff. When she meets Noah he is obviously not happy to have a woman working for him. But she is good at standing up for herself and makes sure he knows she will do her job. When they find out she has had a contract put out on her, Noah takes her to his home to keep her safe. She is uncomfortable at first because she is attracted to Noah and doesn't want to give that away. The more time they spend together the more relaxed they become. Noah is able to help her deal with the memories and trauma of the last five years. Noah was sure that Kit had been assigned to him as a way to mess up his career. His brother is missing in Vietnam and accused of being a traitor. As a result Noah and his sister are given a very hard time in their careers. Noah comes to realize that Kit also has things to deal with. In helping her he finds a greater peace of his own. When they discover how close they have gotten they also realize that, until this operation is over they won't be able to give in to their love. I loved the way that Kit and Noah were able to help heal each other. Even though the book is more than twenty years old it still felt real the entire time I was reading it. LM has a way of pulling me into every story she writes.
I wanted a Q book for my alphabet challenge and I just felt like a bit of a romance, so I picked up this one, a freebie on Audible. Mmm...
So… Kit was an undercover narc for 5 years and she’s now the only one alive who can recognise some drug kingpin. Her boss transfers her over to the coast guard who, apparently, will see this drug kingpin as he cruises past on his drug-filled boat.
Noah, the captain of the coast guard boat, is not impressed when Kit turns up. Obviously he’s being deliberately sabotaged by his superiors if they have sent him a mere woman. And such a skinny weak looking woman who needs to go have a lie down. Cue, Kit proving her worth.
Actually, no. I just made that last bit up. Spoiler, Kit never actually proves her worth as a law enforcement officer. So, what does she do, you ask? Well, she has that lie down. I kid you not. Kit gets onboard the coast guard boat and feels seasick immediately, prompting Noah to suggest she go take a sleep.
Next, Kit meets Noah’s second in charge and he immediately recognises how nice Kit is but concedes that she’s very skinny and should probably just go lie down and have a bit of a nap.
A couple of months later, Kit is still apparently employed by the coastguard to sleep on the job. Literally. But, of course, Noah is a fabulous boss who doesn’t discriminate based on gender or looks or… Oh wait…
Anyway, moving on, Kit needs to move in with Noah to get him to protect her when she’s not on the boat too. At his house, she just generally sleeps and pops on an apron now and then to do the dishes. Spoiler, Noah decides to take Kit on a date to take her mind off sleeping and seasickness and drug lords. The setting for their first date? You guessed it (or not). Noah takes Kit out on his boat. Er… Obviously as it’s Noah’s boat and that makes all the difference, she has a fabulous time and just loves his boat and doesn’t feel the need to be sick or sleep. She gets busy admiring Noah's tan instead (in my mind, I couldn't help but picturing Roy Scheider and wondered if a shark could turn up in the plot).
It’s a brief respite because soon after, she’s back in bed. This time, it’s doctor’s orders, because she’s too female and thin and delicate. (By now, my head is exploding.)
Oh, and I must add that there’s more than once the characters think about the guns they can tote and how thankful they are for them. I think I know where McKenna sits when it comes to gun control.
The original publish date says 1989 but the plot talks about the Vietnam War and Noah mentions working since 1970, so I think it must have been written further back. To say it didn't age well is an understatement.
1 out of 5
The narration started and, look, I’m no expert on US accents and I don’t want to be insulting to any US citizens from the south, but… The narrator, to me, sounded exactly like a female Christopher Walken and it took me quite a while to get used to her tone. But, really, in the end, getting used to the narrator’s accent became the least of my worries.
Kit Anderson had been an undercover policeman for 5 years and had requested a change of scenery, but she didn't like what they were asigning her to do, they enlisted her in the Coast Guard, the captain said you were too dammed good to lose. So she was in the Coast Guard and sick evey day! And she falls in love with her new captain, but he's understanding and helps her a lot. He even has her safe in his own home.
I chose this book because it kept coming up on my "recommended for you" e-lending list at the library and I'm hoping now it will go away. Total cheesefest, but I figured it would be going into it. Quick, easy read not requiring a lot of thought. I'm one of those OCD people who likes to finish a series when I start it, but I haven't been able to convince myself to move on with this one just yet.
Total guilty pleasure this book, because it's dated and not the best writing in the world and not an original plot really, at all... and yet I return to it time and time again, and I've no idea why ;)
What a perfect hero! Give me a man like Noah! The story is suspenseful and exciting but also very sentimental. The heroine gets the kind of man she deserves but only after overcoming several big obstacles.
Loved this story. Noah and Kit were perfect for each other. The intrigue of the story keeps you reading. Love Lindsay McKenna’s storytelling. She is truly gifted.
