Mori Jin is a high school student and Taekwondo specialist who enters “The God of High School,” a fighting tournament that promises the winner anything they want. What began as a competition to seek out the best high school fighter soon reveals itself to be part of a much greater plot that goes beyond Mori's wildest imagination. What will he give to become a true god?
When an island half-disappears from the face of the earth, a mysterious organization sends out invitations for a tournament to every skilled fighter in the world. It is called The God of High School (or GOH). “If you win, you can have ANYTHING you want”, they claim. They are recruiting only the best to fight the best and claim the title of “The God of High School” and Mori Jin was one of those who were invited. This intrigued Mori Jin and he continues through the competition.
Throughout the competition, Mori Jin befriends allies such as Dae-Wi Han who is a full-contact Karate expert and Mi-Ra Yu who is an epeeist master. Will Mori Jin be able to take the title of God of High School with his allies or will their alliance collapse due to their own selfish desires?
The God of High School is a global sensation, with over 8 billion reads on WEBTOON and a hit animation series on Crunchyroll.
This volume collects episodes 1-10 of the hit WEBTOON comic.
Finished reading it today, re-read. The webtoon is in french in this book. I couldn't find any copy in English It's well written, just the webtoon itself has a lot of chapters, there's a anime regarding the first few chapters.
I love the Anime of this so so so much. I was so happy to see a physical release of the webtoon. And it's great. The story is great, i love the artstyle a lot. But sadly the book is WAY too small for a webtoon print, like it should ahve bean at least 3 cm bigger. And the print itself is bad too, i can't even say what exactly is the problem. But full colored webtoon mangas just look better on glossy paper.
uhh? kinda lost on the plot. plus, the nasty sexualization of a high school girl left a bad taste in my mouth. some of the panels were really well drawn though
Yaklaşık 3.5 yıl sonra tekrar God of Highschool okumak güzeldi.
Politicians always seem to be up to something, but the real thing doesn't have a patch on Mujin Park of God of High School. Not only has he come up with a competition in which the strongest high schoolers in the world will fight each other (and be healed by nanotechnology), he's also come up with a weapon that will make nukes obsolete, and he's happy to break into the Pentagon to tell Totally-Not-Obama so. The weapon? A giant hand with a cross on its palm, giving "smack down" a whole new meaning.
As you might guess, this is a book that thrives on extremes. Everyone is ludicrously strong and in the contest for their own reasons, more than a few of them have something like daddy issues, and Mira is somehow both incredibly skilled and unbelievably clumsy, which doesn't entirely work as a combination. It's over the top all the time, making up new forms of "Northern" taekwondo, having delinquents fight in straight jackets, and just dialing absolutely everything up to eleven.
This is clearly an introduction to the characters and the story, and it does a good enough job of establishing both. The art, while appealingly colorful, isn't quite dynamic enough for a book that lives and dies on its action sequences, but the sarcastic fourth wall breaking helps to alleviate that. It's a pretty promising start, and that's much more than I could (and did) say for its anime adaptation.
I have to admit, I mainly started reading this because I had seen the first episode of the anime, even though I wasn't terribly excited by the same. It's interesting comparing to the anime, which apparently skipped (or condensed?) the first three episodes, focusing primarily on Episode 4 for the first anime episode. I suppose that was to give viewers a better "hook" by focusing on an action sequence at the beginning, vs. "Hi, violent kid who wants to fight everyone and be the Strongest! Actually, you're not the strongest (yet?)!" (Admittedly, it's been a minute since I watched the episode, though, so exactly what was covered is a bit fuzzy to me.)
Re-reading it in physical form is much easier than reading the web comic, though, even if I suddenly wanted to stop reading about a fourth of the way in due to the "slapstick" treatment of . AS A PUNCHLINE!! I get that it's slapstick, but that happens to set off a very specific set of anxieties for me, since .
I mean, I get it. Some folks love the whole "Who's the strongest fighter EVER?!?!?" bit in stories, and this definitely fits the bill for them. I, on the other hand, prefer to at least have some set-up and other lore besides jumping straight into the "fighting tournament" arc, like in Hunter x Hunter or Yu Yu Hakusho. The art for GoHS is definitely better than in those two (sorry, Togashi, I know you're doing your best), but... I really honestly wanted to quit reading after (re)reading the part I didn't like.
The only thing that kept me going was 1. I already paid for the book, and 2. I didn't get to the part where I had stopped reading the web version, and I figured there was a reason I had gotten that far (maybe I had read past the bad part the first time, as difficult as I find reading "scrolling" comics). Was there a part I had found really good that made it worth the slog?
...sort of (see below)
I don't know. It's the "Oops! All Fighting Tournament" series, and even though I'm slowly paying for the web comic (otherwise some of the site's dubious "reward coins" I've earned to pay for other comics there expire for no benefit to me), I just can't get interest worked up to finish reading.
Also, this was cut from the physical copy (screencap from the web comic)—he is only listed as "The President of the United States":
Anyway, recommended for folks interested in fighting tournament stories: This is definitely one! If you don't like fighting, pass.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

When it comes to an action-packed series that revolves around increasingly more intense match-ups between characters, fun is so essential! (All of the fighting sequences in the world can’t make up for a boring story.)
From the start, this story is so dynamic—the expressions and movements of every character are so vividly illustrated—in full color too—and there is such levity and revelry throughout. More than fun, there is just so much joy in this story. Often, these fighting-focused series take themselves so seriously—which can be such a bummer. I really appreciate how this series takes the opportunity to focus on the most fun and exciting aspects of different fighting styles in a battle royale set up.
DNF @ pg. 88 It’s fine, kinda weird, I’m bored, don’t feel like continuing. Pretty sure I also tried reading this a few years ago and also couldn’t really get into it. Eh.
I first heard about The God of High School years ago, but I never read it. Then the anime adaptation came out and I also didn't watch it. But then I saw the first volume on Netgalley.. and now I've finally read some of it!
The first volume of TGoHS is a light-hearted and fun introduction to the manhwa. It's a self-aware, at times funny, constantly over the top and unrealistic, fast-paced manhwa with good art, not the best I've seen, but very still very solid. Definitely an enjoyable read, but ultimately this is just the first volume and is mainly setting everything up for the later volumes. Nonetheless, it's a good start.
The very, very start of this volume was a little confusing, and also rather irrelevant so far, though I'd assume it's further elaborated on in later volumes. Other than that, this is a manhwa, which in my experience means that usually women aren't represented in the best of ways. It's not egregious by any means, in fact I'd say it's on the better side of what I'd expect from a manhwa, manga, anime, etc. Few underwear shots and like only 2 women characters, oh and one of those 2 character's goal seems to be entirely based around men so... pretty standard and about what I'd expect.
So far TGoHS has been fun to read and I'm inclined to read more.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an early copy of this! Webtoons made into graphic novels are always awesome. The God of High School has comedy, martial arts and mysteriously giant hands that endanger the world. Enjoy the fun romp of martial arts with people risking it all. Except one, that is only there for the vibes.
