I absolutely loved the update to this edition of The Grammar Daily! You get Grammar Girl's wit and expertise, a variety of puzzles, and many drawings of Aardvarks. My one complaint is the layout of the EPUB in the NetGalley app; I would enjoy this more as a physical book as it is clearly meant to be filled out and annotated. The entries are a topic-of-the-day style and are not dated, so you may start using the book any time of the year. I will be purchasing this for myself when it's released in November 2023. I received a digital ARC of this book through NetGalley.

This is a fun, easy to understand, quick guide to grammar. I would love to see this as a daily calendar type thing, where you can pull off each day. For whatever reason, I was expecting this to be a little more humorous or light, but I still am enjoying going through it (and learning a lot!).

Thanks, NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin, for the Digital Review Copy.

I admit to leaning heavily on Grammarly Premium to correct my grammar. An annual subscription is worth it if you write regularly (e.g., reviews, emails, essays, blog posts). I also have mine set to catch errors on social media posts and comments.

But you can't beat Grammar Girl when it comes to the WHY of Grammar and handy mnemonics to remember the rules. I already have two of her books (tabbed and highlighted) on my “keep forever” shelf and need to add this one, too. I read it as an e-book, which was great for convenience and reference, but I’d like a paper copy for the games and quizzes.

This is an updated (from 2009) version of Fogarty’s Tip-A-Day formatted collection of grammar tips, tricks, history, and games. Each nugget is fun, memorable, and worthwhile; I’ve enjoyed working through them. (I’d love to have this as a page-a-day calendar!)

Practical, helpful, well-referenced, and up-to-date (she covers using “they” as a singular pronoun), you need this on your forever shelf if you teach, write, or try to communicate effectively and accurately!

(I hope I don’t have any errors in this review. If I do, and you catch them, congratulations! You passed my test, and I will send you a sticker.)

This book was fantastic! I’ve been writing since I could pick up a pencil, but there are still some aspects of grammar that I can’t remember to save my life. This book gave quick and easy ways to remember them. Especially my old nemesis who vs. whom! It’s easy to read and would even be useful for high school age kids (maybe even younger if they are advanced readers or writers)! This is especially true for those who find grammar books overly technical or dry (and thus hard to get through, much less stay awake while reading). A must have for any level of writer!

Huge thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!

I am a big fan of the original 2009 The Grammar Devotional. The copyright page indicates that there are some updated lessons for the new 2023 The Grammar Daily…on comparison of a few weeks and related keys, I can’t find anything, but I am sure there are updates and revisions. The Introduction and Acknowledgements are a smidge different. Regardless, even if it is just a reskinning, this book is a winner.

I always loved the repurposing of the daily devotional format for a grammar tutorial, so I was kind of stunned to read in a post or interview back in those early years, that Mignon was ignorant to the concept of the religious devotion…even post-publication (though the format instructions in original introduction make that seem implausible). Clearly her publisher/editor knew…did they not tell her? The new Introduction loses the mention of the devotional format, styling it as a “page-a-day calendar.” Interesting.

Thanks to NetGalley for access to the ARC of the new edition!

I am really enjoying this book!
It offers up grammar rules in bite-sized doses (one a day) so is easily accessible. There's humour, it's easy to read, good explanations, and little quizzes.
I didn't sit down and read the whole thing through in one go because that is not how it is designed. I'm continuing to take my time to read through it and enjoy.

My one issue with the book is that some of the grammar rules imply that THIS IS HOW IT MUST BE. In fact, the English language is CONSTANTLY changing, and the author even acknowledges at the beginning that this is the case and that, unlike French, there is no committee that gets together and says "hErE aRe ThE rUlEs."
English has evolved so much over the centuries, and continues to evolve, and it can be okay to not follow the rules! If language is a way for a society to communicate its culture, history, values, etc., then it must adjust to reflect the culture at the time, instead of abiding by rules that reflect society of the past.

A bit of a digression there, but something to keep in mind if you check out this book. :)

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC; all thoughts are my own.

This was an exceptionally easy-to-read, well-put-together book filled with just about everything you ever wanted to know about grammar and punctuation. As someone who is hoping to get into the proofreading business, this was a great resource. I bookmarked so many pages in my digital version! I'm going to go back and write them all down so that I can organize and remember them better. I received my copy through the Read Now option on NetGalley, and all opinions are my own.

I loved this book. The advice is practical and not the least bit pedantic or dogmatic. Fogarty gives her own opinions, backed up by various style guides. Fogarty has a great sense of humor that comes through very clearly in the book. Kudos as well to illustrator Arnie Ten for some great work. Illustrations in a book on writing? Definitely and I loved them. Overall this is a great book on writing. Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Griffin for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

This book is full of all the fun and modern tips you would expect from the grammar girl. While I read it straight through and got some great reminders, I plan the reread how it’s intended. Having one tip a day is easier to absorb. I’m going to buy a copy for my son too. It also makes a great reference book.

As an English teacher (grades 6-12) I’ve followed Grammar Girl for years and have consulted her site for grammar questions. Thus, when I saw this book up for offer, I quickly grabbed it.

This is a great resource that I will definitely be incorporating into my daily lessons and recommending the book for my students to purchase for themselves.

I like the nugget-sized bites, the variety of topics chosen, and the inclusion of an index to quickly find specific topics.

This book’s a winner!

The Grammar Daily by Mignon Fogarty is a must have.. I have referred to Mignon Fogarty’s knowledge countless times when writing a letter or an email. I love the book layout, the tips, and all the examples. The reader gets to decide whether to read it daily (that would be me) or use it as a reference. Reading Grammar Daily will help you learn and apply something new every day for 52 weeks. The best part is there are quizzes, word searches and scrambles to test the knowledge learned. I will purchase a hard copy.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

I am very please I was given the opportunity to review The Grammar Daily via NetGalley. I have been referring to Grammar Girl for issues with grammar and how to communicate the grammar issues to those who's papers I review and my co-workers when they have questions. Grammar Girl explains the subject succinctly and without a lot of jargon. Her examples also help understand the problem when I am looking for a solution. I am writing this review in the present tense because I continue to refer to her work.

The structure of the book into a daily calendar type work is helpful and easily digestible. As I worked through the book she explained several grammar areas that I wasn't really aware were issues of min. I would highly recommend this book and will refer to it frequently. If the majority of grammar books leave you confused to seem to esoteric, give Grammar Girl a try.

Four and a half stars. Back when I was new to podcasts, Grammar Girl's was one of the first ones that I listened to. I haven't listened for years but was happy to have a chance to read her new book. Her voice has remained consistent for all these years - bringing a cheeky and clever tone to what most people consider a pretty dry topic. I did not read this as it was intended (reading one entry a day) but I think that would probably be a nice experience, especially if you had the print copy. I learned some new things, remembered a few things I had forgotten and reinforced a few things that I already knew. My one qualm is that the book often talks about American vs British style, without even mentioning Canadian. (It would have been enough to say that Canadian usually but does not always follow British and that the book wasn't going to cover it.) Overall would recommend to other grammar nerds, beginner, intermediate or advanced.

I received a digital Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

As a writer myself, I'm a fan of both Mignon Fogarty’s books as well as her podcast. What I've learned from her has helped me to become a better writer and communicator.

Like the name suggests, this is a book of quick tips that will help you to improve your writing. I love the format as this book is you can pick up when you have a few minutes and learn something that you can implement right away. Over time, a year if you want to do one tip per day, you'll see a big difference in the overall quality of your writing, which is what anybody reading this book wants.

If you like her previous books and her podcast, you'll love this book. And if you want to be a better writer, you'll really love it, because that's the result that you'll get from reading it.

The Grammar Daily is a must-have for anyone looking to polish their grammar skills. Mignon Fogarty’s warm yet authoritative voice guides readers through the nuances of the English language with an ease and approachability that is rare in grammar guides. This book is not just a tool for improvement; it's a celebration of the beauty and complexity of language, offered in a format that is accessible, engaging, and immensely practical. I love that you can read one entry a day or go at whatever pace you like!

You can't use this book to replace your actual grammar aids. This book is for fun and entertainment. Entertainment? Grammar as entertainment? 100%.
This book consists of daily entries so that you can spend a year reading an entry a day. The tone is light, and the topics are interesting. Even as someone who has studied languages a lot, there were things I wasn't aware of.
There are also word searches so that you can interact more as you go.
Thanks so much to NetGalley for letting me read this

If you're a devoted listener of the Grammar Girl podcast, you will have heard many of these tidbits before. But if you haven't, or you need a refresher, this is a super handy little book. It's especially great for teachers to have a fact of the day to share and start a discussion.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

I think most people would benefit from a daily grammar lesson, especially when the entries are short. ESL learners would likely find the examples helpful and easy to understand and everyone else would find them funny too. For anyone who is confident in their grammar skills, this book is a good way to brush up those skills.

There is one exception. The use of "reverts back" about 4/5 into the book made me groan, but not everyone is perfect.

Not what I expected. I was expecting this little book to be a fun book, similar to a calendar page a day book. Instead, it was pretty dry, with a no humor review of grammar rules. Not bad but definitely not what I was looking forward to reading.
