In this classic inspirational work, Marjorie Holmes shares her conversations with God, touching upon the big issues and the smaller details of a woman's everyday life. From marital difficulties, routine household tasks, and problems with children, to keeping healthy and sane in an increasingly violent world, I've Got to Talk to Somebody, God reminds us all that no matter where we are or what we do, God is watching over.
Marjorie Holmes (1910—2002) was an American columnist and best-selling Christian author of 134 books, 32 of which were best sellers. Holmes is known best for her biblical trilogy which began with the novel Two From Galilee, a love story about Mary and Joseph, published by Fleming H. Revell.
This was an enjoyable and quick read...recommended to me by a friend. It is a collection of very short prayers in conversation with God. What I really loved about this book is the notion that we can reach out to God and speak to Him in every aspect and every moment of our lives. From making beds or peeling potatoes, to struggling with disappointments and mistakes, to celebrating the littlest of miracles in daily life. This book is a beautiful and simple little reminder that God just wants to be with us, to hear from us, to be included in each moment of our lives regardless of what we are doing or how we are feeling. We can always turn to Him, pour out our feelings unto Him, and trust Him to be alongside us every step of the way. I enjoyed the open honesty with which the author shared her daily life, struggles and all, but always, always going back to the Lord in prayer. The copy I read was a rather old paperback from the library. Part of the charm for me was the old-book-smell and the thoroughly worn condition, evidence of hundreds of other women who have shared this book over the years and likely shared the prayers within.
I absolutely loved this book. This is about a woman's conversations with God. The woman feels alone sometimes in her life, and I think we all do at some point. This woman however, reassures us that God is always there and listening. This book is a must read for any woman looking for some spiritual nourishment.
Really I think it's a 3 1/2 star books. Some of the writings are beautiful. Sincere and honest. Others are ones that I can't relate to. But overall, I think it's a really good book. It reads like a diary almost, which aids to the narrative. In fact if it weren't written that way, I'm not sure it would be a good.
I randomly found this book in my closet near to when I started to feel depressed over Geniveve getting sick and today, the last entry found me on the brink of considering suicide, yet it was just what I needed to hear to overcome and persevere. God is here and so is Geniveve. I'm always on their mind and they care for me.
I read this book because Catherine Marshall's endorsement as "pocket prayers" on the back. It has a good development in the prayers and a maturing. I liked that. It is very real and down to earth - I like that. I gave it to a friend because I really liked the meeting of heart issues with prayer.
Ok this isn't the cover of the book the one I have is green with leaves and flowers around it and the center is white oval with the title in middle. The Illustrations in this book are so great, by Betty Fraser who did awesome job.. This book is from 1966 to 1968 it also comes in pink because my mom had a pink one with same design. I remember this book on the landing of our stairs and ask her about it which someone had given it to her after my dad passed away and leaving her to raise 2 teen daughters (which we were adopted) my dad passed in 84 we were adopted in 81 so short time with him but the best. I was 9 my sister 12 at the time of adoption. I thought this book was beautiful and never read it at the time. My moms been gone 14yrs now and I remember getting that book and reading it, it impacted me then not like it does now if you can understand what I mean. I wish and recommend this book to all who can read and if not have someone read it to you. This is what today looks like in this book. Marjorie at the time was writing this she too felt as we all or most do today. I cried not because it was sad but it was her heart pouring out to God in everyday problems and her honesty of just life was so moving. I felt the tears she shed as well as my own for the things she wrote are true to me as well.. Could not Recommend enough and if you have this book get it down or find it where ever it may be dust off and read it, you will be smiling and floating through your day. I read a chapter a day and then some it's a short book so you can get through it quick.. So Beautiful.. Some Favorites are. I Don't Feel Loved Any More (page 4) I'm Showing My Age (Page 7) Take These Hostilities (Page 9) I'm Tired Of All These Crises (Page 10) The Tree (Page 11) The Coffee Klatch (Page 45) Keep Me At It (page 55) For A Friend (page 99) Companion (page 115) These are just a few of my favorites but trust me there are lots more if I told you it would be the whole book. Go out get and enjoy, Oh and start smiling because the day is beautiful even when it's at it's worse... Gina Clabo
Found this book very moving and inspirational. Essentially a collection of woman’s prayer like conversations with God on variety of subjects – housework, family, friends, sorrowful events and children. Many of the write-ups are suggestive of both the blessing and curses of everything God provides.
thank you, Marjorie Holmes ...you are a lovely lady ...we have never met but i am so very thankful i have found this book in my collection (i love all books, but handheld books, those ones you can truly hold in your hands, kindles are lovely, don't get me wrong, but i real book is just priceless.) ...she takes lesson, every day lessons for us ladies ...who can see how ironing, cleaning the fridge ...those are small tasks, tasks we might not enjoy ...we may even think we "hate" doing them, they are just another task we don't wish to do ...but she takes those lessons and makes them so meaningful and that because of them we can take them as a time to be with the Lord, work for him and feel our efforts are being noticed by the one who we wish to notice the most. i found this for sale on Amazon, a bit of shipping, and the price ...maybe 5 bucks ...1968 is the copyright date. i think it is amazing that she can take everyday life and make it so awesome and meaningful even today, in the 2023. thank you!! MH you are awesome. if you are YouTube check out "Delightfully Southern Devotionals", Donna the owner of that channel is doing a daily lesson ...and you will get to follow allow. i am thankful. maybe you will find a way to make this book apart of your daily life as well. enjoy!! take care. be well and be so boldy blessed.
1.5 stars rounded down because, even though I'm decidedly not the target audience for this, I'm annoyed by how terrible it is for those who are.
I have no idea how this came into my possession; likely part of another retiring pastor's collection that I've absorbed. It's two books in one, which is kind of a neat idea except that neither book is all that great. It's very clear that both books are the kind of "let's give the womenfolk a platform to chat about things, there they go, the dears" publishing that is neither Holmes' nor Price's fault but drives me batty. The writing is flat and clunky in both but hey, let's pray for our husbands, ladies.
That's mean, and I know that's mean, but I am so terribly mad about how many of my older parishioners are doing the work (or decidedly not) of undoing stuff like this. Hurrah to both Holmes and Price for having written these, and for the central concepts of how prayer and life are difficult things and God can handle that, but the way those concepts actually play out in the text are just...well, pat, even though Price says it's not.
Great title, but ultimately you would I believe be better off talking to someone, firstly God yourself than read this book. reading about someone else banging on to God, may have some value, but it is much better to bang on yourself. By the way God doesn't mind when an old geezer bangs on to him.
Given to me in 1978 by my Aunt Fina. I was a new wife, about to be a new mother. 2024- read it again today. Surprised by the breadth of the topics she covers. I shouldn’t have let it set on my bookshelf all those years when I could have really needed the encouragement to talk to God about every situation.
How applicable this lady's prayers are! She has a prayer for just about every situation it seems. Very helpful and relatable. Made me feel like I'm not crazy :)
