Suspense sustains a fast-running narrative continually enlivened by changing scenes of stark horror, tenderness, rollicking humor, exciting gun-play, and dangerous adventure.
So I finally finished a book that no one has heard of (only like five ratings for it) and I can honestly say that that's a shame, because it was truly wonderful.
First, I should probably warn you that the beginning was extremely slow. It took me forever to get through just because of that.
But, it was great watching Christopher grow up. The story begins when he is about nine years old, moving from his aunts guardianship to that of two men who frighten him into beginning an adventure through which he learns about his lineage, the pre-Victorian royalty, and about the tumults of the era, and grows as a character as he does.
I dare not tell you more about the plot or I will spoil everything.
Wilkins' writing is lovely in every way. You feel drawn into the scene and the melodious feel of the way he strings his words together are enough to make goosebumps. But you certainly know who he does and doesn't like--aka the royal family. He has called them everything from fat slugs to putrescent savages and probably worse, but thats what I can recall at this moment.
This historical novel is also a coming-of-age book. Well written with clearly developed characters, this book is a thoughtful look at England before her longest-reigning queen quite took the stage.
