Rate this book
Fall in love with an evil baby dragon in the next dragon codex!

When ten-year-old Scamp Weaver finds a locked chest in a forest clearing, he feels like his life is finally about to change for the better. But he doesn't bargain for just how much change the chest will bring. Inside he finds a dragon egg and a mysterious ancient scroll, which set Scamp and his best friend Dannika off on a harrowing adventure, chased by dragon hunters who want the contents of the chest for themselves. Life gets ever more complicated when the baby green dragon hatches. Will this cute, mischievous hatchling really grow up to be an evil green dragon?

R.D. Henham's series inspired by The New York Times best-seller A Practical Guide to Dragons hatches a gripping story of a green dragon who might--or might not--be evil as the day he was born.

Actual rating is 2.5 stars.

This is a series that is part of Dragonlance. Each book in the series covers a specific type of dragon. In this one, a green dragon dies trying to flee her pursuers and she leaves behind an unhatched egg. Scamp finds this egg and is soon on an adventure with his brother and a friend.

I like the concept of this series as we get to see the differences between the dragons. The story for the most part is a really good story and the author is either a huge fan of this world or did a great amount of research. He uses ideas from other books that are not part of the holy six (the original trilogy and the subsequent trilogy). This is a good world continuation book. The problem with this book is with the concept of the series. The green dragon put things in motion but green dragons were never essential to the adventure or the culmination of the story. In fact, a bronze dragon was more involved. This book did not belong in this series and probably should have been a single book of this world.

This isn't the best book of this series and I really believe because it was misleading with the title. I think that if this was anywhere else in this world with a different title I would have rated this higher.

The Green Dragon Codex

The action and intensity never let up in this strong addition to the Dragon Codex series. The writing style is tight and very well done. Readers unfamiliar with the world of Dragonlance get an excellent primer in this adventure novel aimed at kids, though the adults will probably enjoy it too. This is the darkest of all of the Codex books, and discusses the terrors of war and the aftermath of the conflict that recently engulfed the land. Darkness aside, (which I like) the book features a very positive and funny main character, a boy named Scamp who finds himself in the middle of a very serious situation. Scamp finds a chest with the egg of a green dragon and like any young boy, immediately wants to keep the little wyrmling when everyone tells him he cannot.

Scamp and his dour brother, Mather, and their friend Dannika, begin an adventure to save the baby dragon. They also want to find out what is so important about the other item in the chest with the egg. It’s quite a crazy adventure with all the trappings of a classic fantasy.

The villains of the book, the dragon slayers hunting the baby green dragon, could have been more competent—as dragon slayers should be in my opinion—but the slayers did have one surprise I wasn’t expecting. No, I’m not going to ruin it here.

Some of my favorite scenes were the ones with the adult dragons. Also, the climactic ending features a very unique and funny way to attack a dragon. The main character, Scamp is quite the resourceful hero, and kids will really enjoy his sense of humor and adventure.

The Dragon Codex books have been a lot of fun, and this one, by Clint Johnson (the house name for the series is R.D. Henham), is an excellent addition to the line about everyone’s favorite fantasy creature . . . dragons.

I read it as a stand alone story and nothing indicated it was part of a story other than a few passing references to a previous war. Very enjoyable adventure story type read.

Scamp is one of the smaller boys in his town, and as such has always been picked on by the larger boys. He has learned to be quick to run and light of foot when the bullies are about especially since his big brother won’t protect him. Then comes the fateful day when Scamp flees from the bullies into the darker parts of the forest, and comes across a chest laying next to the body of a large, dead, green dragon. Little does he realize that what is contained within the chest will take him on an adventure where he will encounter tragedy, magic, dwarves, dragons, daemons and a race more ancient then humankind. Scamp, his big brother and his best friend set off with the contents of the chest to appease a dead man's last wish. They meet with strange, and often scary things along the way. They also learn that being family means being there for one another when you really need it, to trust in themselves and that perhaps nothing is "born" evil. Can they save all of Krynn before the strange black hooded red eyed mage gets what he wants?

This is a YA book, though it is entertaining enough for adults. The plot is fun, quick paced and rather enjoyable. Most adults will find the characters rather thin but still amusing. Good for the 12 and up crew, nice introduction to fantasy for the younger generation. 8 and up advanced readers could read it, though their parents will probably have to help them out with some of the fantasy terminology and some of the unusual font (each of these books opens with a letter in a fake handwritten font – neither of my kids can read that font).

Rated PG - some mild violence, evil plots and plans, ADHD behavior saves the day. There is one human murdered and one dragon murdered neither is shown only the aftermath – there is also the discussion of the aftermath of wars, including orphans, refugees and torched towns. Good themes that are open enough to be discussed without being overbearing.

Green Dragon Codex is another fun book in the Dragon Codex series. I quite enjoyed Scamp's quest and found him to be a highly likable character. I didn't like that Mather never stuck up for his younger brother and let him get beat up by bullies. What kind of older brother is that? Not a good one, I say.

The main issue I had with this book it that the green dragon, Pug, is very young. He is just a baby. You never really get to know anything about green dragons except that they are evil and expel a poisonous gas from their mouth when they attack. I found myself wanting to know more about green dragons, but that never really happened, as Pug was too young to talk. Bummer.

The story is good and highly entertaining. Clint Johnson does a fine bit of storytelling, and young readers will really get a kick out of this book. The pace of the story is swift and the action is plentiful. My only wish is that we could have gotten to know more about green dragons. I found myself thinking that the book was more about the bronze dragon, Patima, than the baby green dragon.

Overall, Green Dragon Codex is a good fantasy tale that left me wanting a little more. It is my least favorite of the Dragon Codex books, but it is still a first-rate story. Maybe the next book will focus more on the silver dragon that the story is supposed to be about. I guess I will just have to keep my fingers crossed when I read Silver Dragon Codex.

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.

This in some ways was a typical fantasy, a not so special kid finds out he is special goes on a quest, etc. However one thing I thought was fun was that the kids sent the older person/mentor type off on a wild goose chase near the beginning of the book. So it was 3 kids going on an adventure and stumbling through it without anyone telling them what to do. This was unique as well as a bit unrealistic, kind of had kids doing extraordinary things that seemed unrealistic. But, it's a book about a dragon so I don't think reality is what the author is going for. My son is reading this at school with the author. I think for him, a 10 year old boy, this is an awesome book and I would highly recommend it for kids around the same age!

t was a great reading. Many preteens will love the story. I enjoy the writing and the easy way that it pulled me in to the story. A ten year old boy find a chest and inside a table and a rock that become a green dragon. He fell in love with the little hatchling and protect him from all that want to kill it. Green dragons are by nature evil is what he is told but, he doesn't care. He manage to get himself, his brother and a friend in dire troubles with a black wizard and almost cost them their lives. Recommended to dragons lover and all who love fantasy.

This is the best story of all the "Dragon Codex" books. It catches you from page one and you cannot put it down until it is completed. You wonder about the Green Dragon, knowing that they are evil....But what about this one. You will go on adventures and have a delightful experience learning what Scamp is going to do with this dragon. Filled with humor and excitement. Great read for Adults as well as children. Perfect for the Dragon Lovers of the world.

This was another standard book in the Dragon Codices, which means 4-5 stars. The whole series is pretty good, and this one definitely doesn't dissapoint. Scamp (another rougue?! Come on, where's your creativity?) finds a green dragon egg, which is an evil dragon, but decides to keep it and name it Pug. Little does he know that he will have to journey across the kingdom to keep it safe. Overall, not my favorite, but still a good book.

Once I started, I couldn't put it down! Reading Green Dragon Codex gave me a different view of green dragons than in the beginning of the book. I think any fantasy lover would fall for this great novel, short as it is.

Mmmm... it was good. Wasn't anything spetacular, but it wasn't trying to be. It was simple and easy to read, though I felt that the book waited till the end for everything to happen.

This book was okay. Interesting, but it didn't make me want to read every other book by this author. Mysterious plot, neat characters, but I didn't love it.

Loved Scamp and his crew. This was my first dip into this series and unlike so many, it completely pulled me into his world immediately.
