Taking Chloe

Rate this book
The only way to keep what he has…is to surrender everything.

The Vaughn Series, Book 3

Merrick Vaughn couldn’t be happier with his life. His business is jumping and his marriage to the love of his life is about as good as it gets. At least, that’s what he thinks…until Chloe announces she wants to separate.

Stunned doesn’t begin to cover it, but it quickly becomes clear that she’s dead serious. And if he doesn’t take action, as in now, he’s going to lose the only woman he’s ever loved.

The last thing Chloe wants is a divorce, but she can’t go on living with a virtual stranger who spends all his time—and hers—behind a desk. It’s tearing her apart, and taking a break to sort out her thoughts seems her only recourse.

Then Merrick offers a wicked go to Hawaii with him for one week’s vacation. After that, if he hasn’t successfully changed her mind, he’ll let her go. No questions asked. There’s only one caveat. She must agree to give him complete control.

Chloe’s intrigued and scared. One week in paradise might bring them closer—or be their ultimate undoing.

Merrick and Chloe Vaughn have been married for 2 years and there's no doubt they love each other. But Merrick's workaholic behavior is putting a strain on their marriage. Chloe's been trying to sit him down and have a conversation to straighten things out for months, but he's always busy at work or sleeping like the dead after having exhausted himself at work. So she packs her suitcases, leaves a note to him explaining that they need some time apart to reevaluate their marriage, and checks herself in a hotel. Obviously, this is the wake-up call Merrick needs to realize that he has to overcome his insecurities - there had to be a reason for his workaholic behavior, right? - and win his wife back. So he's got his priorities straight again, but will Chloe believe he's really going to change? Will she give their marriage a 2nd chance? Of course she will! This is Romancelandia! :)

I really enjoyed this quick read. The H/h were very likable, the love scenes were steamy and kinky-ish, and the plot was engaging and believable. I confess I got a bit freaked out with one particular love scene that was too kinky for my taste, but I'm not going to "punish" the whole story for it and lower my rating. I only wish this was a full-length novel, because the ending felt a little rushed.

Note: This series is getting hotter and hotter! The 1st story, Touching Lace, was kind of tame; the 2nd story, Tasting Candy, kicked up the hotness a bit; and now Taking Chloe has definitely entered the series into the erotica/romantica category. It's not for the faint of heart, I warn you. I wonder if I'll survive the next story, Tempting Grace. If the steam factor goes up another notch, I might become a victim of Spontaneous Human Combustion, LOL.

This was a short (71 pgs.) little scorcher about a newly married couple with some problems. Merrick Vaughn, the hero, is the owner of his own multimillion dollar business and an out-and-out workaholic. He's so desperate to prove himself to his family that he's neglected the one thing that's most important to him--his wife. Merrick's always had to work hard for his successes, unlike his equally successful brother Blade and his sister Lacey. Merrick has always felt like he's been in his brother's shadow, and struggles with his feelings of inferiority. So he's been driving himself to make his business the best it can be, working 7 days a week and putting in long hours, forgetting that he has a loving wife who needs him to be a husband to her.

Chloe first met Merrick when she came to work for him a few years ago as his administrative assistant. Despite his policy not to get romantically involved with an employee, Merrick just couldn't help himself when he saw Chloe. There was an instant attraction and luckily the feeling was mutual. Soon they were married and everything was perfect. Until Merrick started working longer and longer hours, falling dead asleep as soon as he dragged himself home, and not being emotionally (or physically) available to Chloe. Chloe can't take much more, and gives Merrick a long overdue wake-up call about the state of their marriage. Although it pains her do it (since she still loves him desperately), she leaves him. The ball is now in Merrick's court--what will he do?

Well, he may be a work-a-holic but he's no fool--Chloe's the best thing that's ever happened to him, and he will not let her get away. He convinces her to give him another chance and spend one week in Hawaii with him as a second honeymoon and new start. And if he can't convince her that he's changed his ways and that they belong together, then he'll let her go.

Time to check the smoke detectors in that hotel room, because it's not long before Merrick and Chloe set the sheets on fire--blazing hot action there! Clearly there's nothing wrong with their sex life, as Merrick shows her everything he's got in his arsenal. But Chloe has trouble trusting that this new and improved Merrick is in it for the long haul--what happens when they get home? Will Merrick go back to his old workaholic ways?

This was a satisfying 'couple-working-on-their-relationship' story. Nothing too unusual or mind blowing, just a very hot little hour and a half read with a nice little HEA. It is part of a series (stories 1 and 2 about Merrick's siblings are available in ebook and in print, Seduce Me), and although it's not absolutely necessary to read them first, it helps give a little background about the family dynamics. If you like hot stories about married couples who need to work on their relationship, this one fills the bill. 4 stars.

Warning: This story contains explicit language and sex, including oral and anal, some light spanking and hand tying bondage, use of a vibrator, and some not too obvious exhibitionism and voyeurism. Not for the faint of heart.

Erotic and sweet romance novella between a husband and wife working it out when work threatens to take over their marriage. For all the sexy stuff, I could really feel the love between H/h - they were fighting for each other and not with each other. Their HEA gladdened my heart. Wish it had been longer though, I'd have loved to see more of them doing boss-secretary sexy things since they work together.

3.5 stars!
Safe romance.

Taking Chloe is the third book in the Vaughn Series. And it's about Merrick and Chloe. Their relationship was mentioned in book 2, but the author didn't elaborate. This is a very intense, compelling, emotional, and smokin' hot story about Merrick and Chloe, and I was captivated when I started page 1. I was so engrossed in the story that I had finished the book in one reading before I realized it.

So in this book, Merrick and Chloe were happily married for two years, or so Chloe thought. She didn't understand how things had gone so wrong. She'd come to a heartbreaking conclusion that she was married in name only because her husband Merrick's life revolved around his business. She realized that he would never slow down. And decided that it was time to get a backbone and leave. Merrick woke up one morning and found his wife gone. His mind rebelled at the notion that she might not come back. He knew he made a mistake, but he was determined not to let her go. He will do anything to get her wife back in his arms. In his bed.

I adored Merrick. He's such a swoon-worthy hero. Yes, he made mistakes, but he owned it, and he apologized. It was very obvious how much he loved Chloe. That it was never his intention to hurt her, to made her feel like he didn't care. He was actually ashamed for putting her in the position to choose between their marriage and her happiness. And even though he wanted her back, he gave her the space she needed; he just silently kept watch, making sure she stayed safe. It was so freaking sweet of him! *swoon*
"If sitting in this car, watching her window is all I can have of my wife right now, then I'm going to take it."

"I'm not getting back into that bed without my wife tucked in beside me.
And as for Chloe, although I haven't been married, I totally understand that it wasn't easy for her to leave. She loves Merrick very much. But she wouldn't settle for anything less. And when Merrick asked her to come back and promised he would change, I thought she would immediately say yes, but she didn't; yes, you heard it right. She didn't return to Merrick even after their one-week sex-marathon in Hawaii. She sticks to her decision until she sees Merrick really making some changes. And I admired her for that. She made sure that it didn't happen again.

I really did enjoy Merrick and Chloe's story. They were such an amazing couple. It was very obvious from the start how much they loved each other. The make-up sex was searingly hot. Since this is a novella, I didn’t expect much from the storyline, but Ms. Rainey has shown me that there's more to the story than what the blurb says. This is such an intense, compelling, and emotional story, and the author and I could feel their pain and anguish. The author has an incredible way of writing dialogue and building up her characters – the interaction between the two is truly amazing. And you know what really made this book extraordinarily was we have a hero who was not afraid to show his heart and express his emotions. I was really committed to Merrick and Chloe's reconciliation.

Overall, Taking Chloe was such a delightful, sexy, hot, and emotional quick read. I just wished it was longer than 72 pages because I want to see more Merrick and Chloe with their baby/babies. I am going to read Grace's story, though.

I think this writer and I need some relationship counselling because we just can't see eye to eye! I love her ideas and generally the first half of each book goes really well...until it all just goes pear shaped. Unfortunately, I'm a little bit OCD which means I need to know what happens for completion sake and I have to at least skim to the end.

I liked this better than #1; Lacey's story, but overall I preferred #2; Blade's story. I know that doesn't make sense because I rated #2 as only 2 stars and this as 3 stars, but #2 would have got 4 stars if it hadn't gone absolutely crazy right near the end.

I like Rainey's hero's. They are gruff and dominating and call a spade a spade. They'll win no prizes for poetry, but the way they talk to their women sets my hair on fire! The heroine's are strong and likeable, but again I found it difficult to keep track of both characters erratic thoughts and actions. They just don't completely add up for me and leave me a bit confused.

With this particular book I felt slightly let down that there wasn't a big showdown or big discovery of what the issues in the relationship were. For a couple on the brink of relationship breakdown the resolution seemed a bit tame. There were quite a few clichés and a fair amount of cringe inducing dialogue which is a shame. Also, I can't believe I'm going to say it...but there was perhaps one too many sex scenes *gasp*. Personally for me, it tripped over the line into gratuitous and unnecessary.

I like this book the lease of the series because they were married and never fully expressed their desires and wants for the other. Chloe never really sat Merrick down and gave him an ultimatum she tried to talk but never pushed. Merrick is scared of the future and his inadequacies amongst his family. After Chloe leaves him it is a wake up call to re-prioritize his life. On a second honeymoon in Hawaii their life is set on better ground because finally both are fully open to the other. Merrick always kept part of his nature hidden from Chloe but realized that helped with the rift.

I absolutely loved this book! For me, there's nothing better than a couple who've drifted apart finding their way back to each other. It showed a realistic portrayal of how tough marriage can be, and what it takes to get things back on track when things go awry. I thought the author captured the raw emotion beautifully. Once I started, I didn't want to put it down. Thankfully, it was a short read, so I didn't have to!

So far, my favorite in the Vaughn series. Seeing Merrick realize all his mistakes was very nice to see. Usually in romance novels, the guys are almost perfect and in this one it was nice to see Merrick being more "real", making mistakes and having to change things about himself in order to keep Chloe.

Even iffier than the previous one. The only thing remotely resembling a plot was the initial premise of the wife leaving her husband because he was spending too much time at work, only to have him follow her and f**k her silly.

I'm looking forward to the next one, though. What I glimpsed of the two leads in the epilogue of this story, sparks are bound to fly.
