The problem with this volume and its companion, Vol. 2 (go figure), is that the stories and anecdotes are mostly about people from the early part of the 20th century whom very few of us today have ever heard of. That makes the jokes and inside-humor parts just not funny. There are a few snickers here and there, but these are volumes for the Bennett Cerf enthusiasts or those who perhaps actually remember those people.
