Details the shocking true story of convicted sex offender Richard Lee "Ricky" Franks who, after pretending to clean up his act and change his ways, kidnapped and murdered a six-year-old girl. Original.
This is a quick read but it somehow feels unresolved. Yes the guy who did it was caught, but only on circumstantial evidence. And his testimony. (disgusting and so typical of those perverts. I knew they loved blaming the victim but to say a 6 year old opened your zipper and wanted to have sex desperately, makes my blood boil!
Most of the book was about the trial(s) At least 2/3 of it if not more. he author did not manage to make me feel real sorry for Opal's family which is weird cause I always feel sorry. I did now but not as much as I would have normally.
At the end I was left with questions. One of them was, They did find her body. Did they find any more evidence that Franks did it? They did not prosecute him with murder. Only with kidnapping. I also could not find the answer while searching online.Only thing I did find that the little girl's head was bashed in.
I think this is an okay true crime book but I would not buy it. Lend it from the library or from a friend.

I liked this book, but the details pf the case are repeatedly gone over multiple times throughout the book, due to the hung jury the first time. In that sense, it is almost exhausting to read. Such a sad true story though...I have to say, I think the jury made the right choice in this case.
FS: "Six-year-old Opal Jennings crouched on her hands and knees in her grandmother's yard as she watched a colony of any trudge through the dirt and over the occasional sprig of early-spring-grass."
LS: "Before turning to go, he wiped a single tear from his cheek."
The story was a little long in the telling. The story was moving and I was waiting to find out the verdict. I can understand the dilemma the juries were under in this case.
