I am the first born and only girl in my family, and six and nine years separate me and my two brothers. Needless to say, I was alone quite a bit. But being alone gave me plenty of time to indulge my imagination in the world of books. One of the first novels I read was a young adult series that traced the lives of two teenagers in high school, Sweet Valley High. Reading those novels I thought I could do better, and so my quest to write entertaining stories began.
Being an introvert, it took me a long time to feel comfortable enough to let others read my work. How long? Well, the first person to read a story I wrote was my husband. Since then, I’ve been writing professionally for almost nine years now. But it was my daughter who encouraged me to write a book for teens—just one of the reasons I love her so dearly.
I live in Maryland with my husband and three children. If you take away the opinionated teenagers, family drama, overflowing bookshelves and DVDs, my life is pretty boring. But don’t take those things away, since they’re my inspiration.
Mystix Mystify Sasha is thinking about how she doesn’t like Antwan (but she really does). She’s just sent an email to a lady that possibly can help her discover the nature of her powers and is waiting for a response. Then she gets cold and it’s pitch black. Her bedroom transforms into someplace with loud music (a nightclub). She sees that she’s in “Trance” (an eighteen and above club).
Antoine is there. He’s says he’s been there since nine. He says he asked her at school to go hang out with him and got rejected. But there she is. She agrees to dance with him, They look good dancing together and get lots of stares. Sasha hears her mother calling her and she makes up an exscue to go to the bathroom. In the bathroom she is able to make it back to her room. When she opens her eyes she’s looking at her mom and Cassieta (her housekeeper). Before going down to see what her father wants, she sees she has an email from the Wiccan goddess.
Sasha’s father wants her to recruit students for a ndw development (The Oak Center). One day, Sasha requests Jake bring the journal to school. He says they should all meet in the library later. Sasha says she can’t because she has to go to a cocktail party. Jake reminds her of Crystal’s vision of the darkness coming. Sasha tells them she has to recruit for her parents new exclusive club. They discuss Mary being a Mystix and Sasha shows them the letter and what happens when she holds it up to the light. She reads it and explains that maybe the darkness coming for them is a curse. They agree to meet the next day. Lindsey comes by the table and freaskishly seems to know that Sahsa doesn’t want to go to the party and her parents don’t really pay her any attention. Franklin also makes an appearance and gives them the news about some kids in Pennsylvania that went missing after a religious trip on a bus, No ones heard from them in two days.
Alyssa is at the party and blames Krystal for Cammie moving away. She also blames her for going after Franklin. But Mrs. Carrington seems to like Alyssa and wants her and Sasha to rally up some of their friends for the club. Alyssa is thrilled and says they’ll start right away. Sasha is about to tell her she’s not interested but she sees Franklin and his dad (Walter Bryant)). There’s some talk about why he’s there. His profession is mentioned again (meteorologist). He’s there for free publicity. His project in strange weather is brought up again. Sasha can’t take much more of her and escapes to her room.
Antwon has snuck into the party and questions Sasha about where she went the other night (and why she keeps running from him). Then he suggests they get out of there. Krystal says she can’t but doesn’t protest to much when he takes her hand and leads her out the house. Out on the gaezo, Antwon questions Sasha about giving him mixed signals. Turns out she really was at the club. He asks her if she likes him or not. But she flips it and asks what he likes about him. He likes she’s different. She doesn’t act like she’s better. Krsytal wants to admit her feelings but then she sees .. the birds. Sasha can’t teleport so they make a run for the house. “Mouse” shields them (Sasha’s bodyguard). Mouse leads Antwon to his car and tells Sasha to disappear.
Sasha gets a message from the wiccan that says it’s time they meet later that night. Fatima says she’s one of them. Antwon later calls to find out if she’s ok. The next day everyone is discussing the bus incident. Sasha wonders if their parents have thought about them, unlike how hers didn’t notice anything that happened to her last night. At he library, Krystal tells Sasha Franklin brought up doing it but she brushed it off. She says she doesn’t kow if she wants to. Sasha says she should think on it and not feel pressured into it if she doesn’t want to. Sasha tells them about the birds. They’re more interested in Antwon. Then she tells them about her new power. Lindsey then appears (again seemingly knowing about Krystal and Franklin and about wanting to know answers but they’re coming to slow). They see she also has the M mark ono hero ankle. Jake demands to kow where she got it and she says she was born with it. She says she’s noticed Sasha’s and Krystals. Her power is she can read thoughts they wear black. Sasha then gets pulled to .. someone (that tells her (and her friends) to stay vigilant. He’s coming back and this time he threatens everything. It says the light will prevail. It always does. When she comes too, Lindsey tells her what she does is called “astral projection”. Lindsey says she and Sasha will look into Fatima and Jake and Krsytal will try to find the River Styx connection. They’ll meet up Friday after school. The girls notice Jake is upset about something. Krystal thinks it’s grades and getting into collage.
Sasha receives a text from Antwon in class that he’s thinking of her. He tells her to meet him in an abandoned hallway and shows her how much (until she pulls away). Alyssa catches them together amd insults Antwon. But he throws it right back at her and calls out her brother. Then Alyssa reprimends Sasha for this not being what her mother ment by recruiting. Then she demands Sasha come with her. Reluctantl y she follows. Later that night, Sasha texts Antton. He doesn’t respond. Sasha starts to astral project again. Now she’s in Antwon’s room. She hears a voice, but kisses his check three times. Traveling back to her room she sees something in the dark. It’s a man. It asks her to come with him and help him. If she does he’ll spare her from death. Sasha is now back in her room.. She looks at the moon (whose she’ll always has a connection to) and asks it what it’s trying to tell her.
On the nature trip, alarmingly they find in the water .. a dead body. The teacher calls the police. As they remove the body Sasha sees a dark shadow above it. Franklin goes missing. Krystal says she also seen the shadow but it more concened about Franjlin. Jacob surprisingly says to let him go. She can do better. Antwon agrees. Krystal storms off. Sasha goes after her. Krytal admits something isn’t right. She ays the body was dragged there. He was one of the kids on the bus. He was drowned and dragged there. Then it took his eyes. Krystal says a spirit came to her. They then find another body, but it’s alive. Jake and Antwon go in to save him. It’s Frankin. While the medics work on him, Sasha hears laughter.
Sasha’s parents have set her up to go out with a guy named Steven. His father is interested in investing in the new club. Of course, Sahsa isn’t interested but her father says she’ll do as he says. He’ll be there soon. Her father instructs her to talk up the club. To make this short, Antwon shows up at the restaurant, says Sashsa’s leaving with him, then asks her to be his girl. When they get to the mall, Sasha says a man with a dark shadow following him. Then she sees a group of teenagers. They all have pale skin and strange eyes (on the girls). They look like they have snakes for hair. The guys eyes are gouged out like the body in the lake. While eating, Antwone’s ex Toya comes over. She has.. horns. Of course, he doesn’t see this. Sasha pushes Toya (who looks at her knowingly) and gets the hell out of there. Antwon thinks it’s about jealousy and admits he fooled with her but not now.
Sasha’s parents of course find out, ground her, and forbid her to see Antwon. At school, Krystal says she had a vision of all these creatures walking around on earth. Creatures just like the ones Sasha saw at the mall. Sasha tells them what she saw and then says she thinks it’s because she can visit another plane due to her power. Krystal gets a weird call that says it’s from Franklin’s number but he’s not at school. He hasn’t really seen her since the incident. Alyssa “accidently” knocks Krystal to the floor coming out of the health room. Alyssa plays innocent. Krystal blames her for the cell phone prnk. Alyssa says “she doesn’t deserve to be this close to her kind”. Sasha says she and Alyssa can talk later and walks off with Krystal. She apologizes to Krytal but she just brushes it off and they start talking about their powers changing. They head to Sasha’s to hang. Lucily she’s gone before Sasha’s parents come home. The next day, one of Sasha’s teacher’s announces there’s another body found. He’s found behind the newstation. His eyes were also gouged out. They all discuss it at lunch. Lindsey says it was about washing away the sin. Krystal thinks it’s a message to them. Alyssa then appears with Franklin and says he’s been with him. He just shrugs. He looks darker and he’s wearing a tight shirt. He usually wears polos. When Krystal asks did he get her messages he says he lost his phone. There’s a lot of tension between Jake and Franklin. Alyssa is about to leave and and she asks Sasha to go with them. Franklin has a cartoon of milk that he drops and it splatter’s Krystal (she’s wearing all white). Sasha says she’ll see Alyssa later and she and Franklin leave together. Krystal won’t let the others help (clearly hurt). Sasha just leaves and lets Jake and Lindsey deal with it.
On the way to Antwon’s house, Sasha comes face to face (tho it has no face) with the darkness. Sasha teleports right to Antwon. At lunch the next day, Sasha finds out her father is trying to take his house and he and Krystal are pissed at Sasha over it. He’s trying to build the club on his property. Jake storms off. Later, Sasha sees Franklin and Alyssa. Weirdly his eyes are golden and spinning around quickly. They say Krystal’s stuck in gym. Then she realizes they’ve stole Krystals clothes. Sasha (with the help of her mark and the voice) finds Krystal sticl om the twpe; canmet. Sasha teleports to the teacher’s office, gets the key, and gets her out. But Krystal is pissed at her. Krystal accuses her of being prejudice and jealous of her and Franklin. Krystal tells her to other than Mystix business stay out of her life.
Sasha is about to confront her dad but hears him being propositioned to put fuding into this man’s project and he’ll put money in his club in return. He says it’ll only hurt those who it has the power to hurt. Antwon calls and wants them to hang but Sasha says she can’t. Antwon gets an attitude and hangs up. Sasha decides to go to Jake’s and they decide the best thing to do is go to Walter Bryant’s office to look at his files. They find reports, photocopies of news articles, something called “The Majestic 12”, a flash drive. They decide to come back and replace it with a empty one. They fill in Lindsey. Sasha thinks Mr. Bryant is close to finding out about the power. Krystal verifies “they” know about them. She saw it in a vision. She also saw the creatures. A voice tells them all to be vigilate and all their M’s glow.
To Sasha’s alarm at school , her teacher has no eyes. So she starts to scream and is transported to the astral plane where she’s told by the voice the goodess River Styx has cursed her. It will last as long as the curse exist. After school, they hear a scream and find Franklin trying to take Krystal’s eyes. Jake rescues Krystal but is engulfed in the black smoke pouring out Franklin’s mouth. With the darkness weighing them down, Sasha calls on her strength and the light breaks her hold. But when they try to rush at Franklin he disapparates into a cloud of smoke. They all know he’ll be back for more power. They’re the ones blocking him from getting it. When they go back for the flash drive it’s gone. Cassita and Mouse know what they all are (revelead later). She vowed someone she’d protect them but can’t say who. Cassita tho tells her she can astral project to her.
FFFatima calls her plane “The Magestic”. Everything Fatima says has already been touched on in the book. Krystal tho she finds out can see things in the future. She tells her that when the time comes she and the other will know what do do and they must work together. Sasha goes to her father and demands he leave Jake’s house alone. She shows him her power and then says if he doesn’t she’ll tell everyone his daughter isn’t normal. He agrees but says not a word to her mother about her “imperfections”. The bus is rported found. Sasha gives Jake the good news. AT Jake’s, a terrible storm hits and starts to suck everything up in its path. The funnel stops in front of them. Shadow break free of the funnel and separate like their following a leader. A voice says “You won’t win”. Then the funnel is gone. The next day, Sasha finds out Cassita and her father had an argument and she wentback to Argentina. Now Sasha has no guardian. At school, Krystal says she thinks Franklin is gone. She and Sasha worry about what he’s shown other people on the flash drive. Sasha explains about her relationship about Alyssa. Krysta brushes it off and says she was trippin. Sasha finds Antwon and says she’s not ashamed of him. He tells her to prove it. She then kisses him in the hall with everyone around. Five weeks pass. All is calm. Cassita isn’t answering Sasha’s letters, her dad is even more quiet, Antwon comes for dinner, and there’s a change in Sasha’s mom. One day in the cafeteria, Sasha sees the darkness out the window. Sasha in the epilogue finds out she’s in hell and comes face to face with a reaper that lifts her up into the darkness.
My Thoughts This is SOOOOOO SLOOOW! My problem with this is this is more about Antwon and Sasha’s relationship than it is about “the mystery” aspect. I had a very bad feeling it would be when I started it. I was pratically yelling in my head GET ON WITH IT! Wasn’t interested in hearing about Sasha’s back in froth (I don’t like him but I really do like him). Wasn’t interested in Sasha’s (Oh I can’t be with him because he’s not rich. Oh I can’t be with him because he’s black. My parents won’t accept him). Wasn’t interested in the parent drama (My parents are more concerned with social status than paying attention to me). I just wanted to find out about the bodies that keep turning up with the gorged out eyes and what happened on this trip. When started this series I was really hoping it was going to be more supernatural than teen romance drama. Is it any wonder it took me a minute to get to the second book? The real action doesn’t start until the last 10 chapters but then just like that in one chapter in pages “the dakness” is gone. It’s not much longer on the first encounter. It’s so quick (the use of Sasha’s power) you’d miss it if you blinked. Then it just left the situation with the bus and the bodies wide open with no explanation.
Rating: 4 I just think this series would be so much better if it stuck to being about these four kids and their powers and not about their relationship drama.

I have to say, I wasn't a fan of Sasha's side of the story. Not because she was a spoiled little rich girl (quite the opposite, actually). Not because she was a drama queen (which she wasn't but drama always seemed to find her). Not because she just couldn't make up her mind about the boys flocking around her (it was just one boy but she actually couldn't really make up her mind, so that's partially true). I just didn't like her voice. I didn't find all that much compelling about it and when it ended, I was glad to be out of her head.
Now with that aside, I liked everything else. I actually really liked Sasha as a character. Despite her upbringing, she's pretty grounded in reality and thinks for herself. I really liked that about her. She's an immensely loyal person and doesn't cave on her laurels very easily. She swayed back and forth with Antoine because of what her parents would think but considering everything else she could have done considering her parents, I think that was pretty minor and I could easily accept it as a character flaw. She's a very strong-willed girl and I wish there were more like her in YA all around. I just didn't like her voice. I didn't like the way she relayed information to the reader. Despite the situations she was in, at times I found her descriptions boring. But other than that, no complaints.
As I was saying above with her and Antoine, well, I'm not an Antoine fan. Any guy that doesn't get the hint does not rank highly on my list. I found him forceful and pig-headed, constantly in Sasha's face when she was trying to get away from him (not in an attacker sort of way but just 'I said no now leave me alone' sort of way). That's not to say he wasn't a nice guy when Sasha gave in to him, but she gave in. Did she start liking him because she really liked him or was it all a result of consigning to his persistence? I have a hard time telling. And the little fit he threw when she couldn't hang out? I didn't think Sasha was the one that should have been apologizing. But that's just me.
For the overall story arc, it's getting interesting. Characters that were merely a passing reference in Krystal's story are front and center in this one, and not in a good way. The Darkness is getting more and more desperate and resorting to more horrifying things to achieve its end. And this "club" Sasha's parents want her to be a part of? Sketchy at best. Considering all of the elements around the club, Sasha would do well to find her own apartment.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Mystyx series. I'd really like to get inside of Jake's head and Lindsay? What's her deal? Poof she's there and she has powers too? I want to know what's going on with her. Overall Mystify was a pretty good sequel to Manifest. I don't think Sasha's voice was as strong as Krystal's was but it was entertaining. I can't wait for the next one!
I just loved how well Ms. Arthur combines paranormal with real life drama. Not with over dramatic stuff, but everyday real stuff that people go through every single day.
We meet Sasha who's life is nothing but what is seems. She is drenched in a world that she totally dislikes and wants nothing part of it. Sasha meets Antoine and is having an extremely hard time fighting the attraction to him. Things get complicated and she must face the question, what really matters?
What really matters when it comes to a relationship? I know now and days people are much more lenient when it comes to dating people of other races. But some people are extremely old fashioned and don't think its is right to stray outside of your race, your class, your people, etc. Sasha is faced with this situation time and time again in this book. She wants to go with her heart but faces trouble when her parents questions why she is hanging out with that thug.
I loved that Sasha is strong and fierce. She knows what she wants, keeps herself out of trouble, and makes good grade. And even though she is a richie, she does not degrade everyone who is not. She is all-around friendly. Sasha sticks up for her friends, and her love, fighting her parents all the way.
The paranormal part was awesome! I love the whole aspect of Gods and Goddesses in a big war. This book also made for great entrainment with all the researching and seeking out secrets.
Ms. Arthur certainly knew how to draw me into her wonderful world of Mystyx. The characters were strong yet fresh. Each of them, finding themselves in this world as well as fighting a war with their powers. I can't wait to read her next book!
So far I'm liking it :) I'm just getting to the good part ....
Mystify is the second book in Artist Arthur’s Mystyx series. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Manifest, the first in the series. Mystify is told from Sasha’s viewpoint and continues to take us on the adventure that this little group of teens, the Mystyx have been thrown in. Neither of them is certain of their purpose yet, but they do recognize that they have at least two things in common: a birthmark in the shape of an M and the second being that they each have a “power”.
In Mystify, Sasha learns that her power is the ability to astral project. She figures this out haphazardly one night while she’s in bed thinking about Antoine, a black boy who lives across the tracks, and finds herself at a dance club with him but somehow she’s left her body at home in bed. Sasha, is a supposed Richie, so someone her parents demand that she hang out with the “right” kind of people, do the “right” kind of activities, not someone who wants to date Antoine and who’s best friend since elementary has been Jake, a Trackie. By trying to keep her parents’ demands in check she finds herself alienating her friends and Antoine. However, the Darkness brings the four friends together and now the Mystyx needs to learn more about the Darkness, what is it, and how are they going to stop it and why?
Artist Arthur has done a wonderful job bringing to light or rather keeping the issues of discrimination in the forefront of a great story dealing with Good and Evil. I love it!! The Good vs. Evil battle has a different twist than most out there today – so definitely worth a read!

(Book synopsis provided by goodreads.com)
In the second Mystyx book, we get to know a bit more about our friends. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book, but I gave this one a try. I found it to be much better. The narrator voice seemed much stronger in this one. One thing I really liked was how much growth we can see in the world from one book to the next. The author’s voice is growing and it seemed to me to be much stronger then in the first one. Which is always a great thing to see. I love seeing an author’s voice get stronger from one book to the next. It shows me as a reader that their world and characters have a lot more to offer that we have not seen yet.
Sasha’s relationships with her fellow Mystyx seemed more real in this one then the Mystyx relationships in the previous book. I enjoyed the story line of her love interest and it was a believable one. It reminded me of a friend’s relationship in high school.
I do wish that there had more to the story. I felt it was a bit on the short side and I felt that I was left with more questions then I had answers, which is a letdown for me. I found myself frustrated with the ending, because it was short. But I know that no book will ever answer all the questions fans have. I would recommend reading this book, even if you didn’t like the first one, this was miles better.
Over all rating: ***3 out of 5 stars. Go out and get a copy (in a legal way of course) and read it!

In the previous book you had Krystal as the MC. Admittedly, she was a bit of a whiny brat at first, but she redeemed herself in the end in my opinion and I could sympathize with her. I thought it was interesting that they discovered their powers and was looking forward to knowing more about them and seeing them developing said powers.
In this one, we focus on Sasha, who seems somewhat clueless. Her parents are forcing her to team up with a girl she doesn't like at all for something that's not that important and she doesn't know how to say no, even though she is completely against it. She doesn't know how to really stand up for herself to them and is slowly realizing that not making up your mind can be a decision as well. And that it does have consequences. Like Krystal, she redeems herself and becomes a stronger character because of it.
One thing I noticed in both books: these kids have some seriously messed up parents! I already had issues with Krystal's mom and dad, but Sasha's are equally strange. Makes me feel even more grateful for the family I have myself. I mean, it's pretty harsh for your parents to force you into a friendship with someone you absolutely do not like because they want to get ahead in business. Her dad especially is not a warm, cuddly sort of person. In the town, there's a lot of focus on social status based on where you live and how much money you make and Sasha's parents are among the elitists. Their viewpoints make me sad and angry, it reflects such ignorance!
There is a lot of teen angst in the book and the Darkness is not to be ignored. There's actual evil laughter involved and this time it's actively trying to mess up their lives. I won't give away what happens, but this thing/person/power (I really want to find out what it is exactly) is seriously disturbed and needs to be beaten!
I enjoyed learning more about their powers and where they came from. And Sasha's powers expand in a very logical way, which I liked. There's not a really great amount of action in the book, it feels as a build-up towards the real thing that's bound to come in the next book (fingers crossed!). And I just have to say I'm still rooting for Jake (this will make sense if you've read the book). He seems like a really great guy.

As the daughter of one of the wealthiest couples in Lincoln, Sasha has her share of woes. Her parents only pay attention to her when they want her to do something for them, and they don't understand her relationship with her friends. Sasha has a lot to handle when her parents force her to buddy up with one of the meanest and cattiest girls at school to help draw attention to her father's new exclusive club; all on top of her emerging powers in the Mystyx. Sasha must juggle the needs of her family as well as her own budding talents, and the attention of her longtime crush. Will she be able to find out what is going on, before things take a turn for the worse? Mystify picks up a few short weeks after the end of Manifest. Sasha comes to the forefront and we see how she reacts as she, Krystal and Jake learn more about their budding powers and the entity they must face. Sasha is a believable character, however her penchant for saying "me and Krystal" had me grinding my teeth. She is an exceptional student and ends up going on a class trip as a volunteer to watch and help out the other students with their projects. I had a hard time picturing her as saying "me and Krystal." It just didn't ring true for her personality. Krystal's character has improved from Manifest and we get to see a calmer, more relaxed side of her. Jake's powers are running him through a gamut of emotions making him moodier, but also stronger. This installment in the Mystyx series seems to be more about finding out how their powers are evolving and there isn't really any closure to an event that happened earlier in the book. The ending is anti-climatic but I think it's building for the next installment, Mayhem. It was an enjoyable read, and I liked the romance between Antonio and Sasha. All in all, a solid sequel to Manifest, which will leave you wanting to know if they will be able to win the upcoming battle. Some secrets are revealed while others continue to linger on as more characters and twists are added to the plot.
I reviewed this book from an Advance Reader Copy from Netgalley.
This is quite a short, quick, fun read and just like the previous book Manifest, reads a lot like a collection of journal entries.
Our narrator this time is Sasha Carrington, who we first met in Manifest through Krystals eyes. Sasha is another teenager who gets pretty much whatever she wants but I found her more instantly likeable and less whiny than Krystal. Sasha has a good sense of fairness and is willing to stand up for what she believes in, in the end.
Sasha has a lot on her plate- distant parents, bitchy girls at school and her first teenage crush is something of a 'starcrossed lovers' scenario- a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Then there are her growing 'powers' and the small matter of the darkness that is coming for her and her friends.
There are lots of interesting ideas throughout the book, but I think it was perhaps a little too short and had a feel of being something to set the scene ready for the third book.
There's just enough to keep you interested and by the end of the book the scene is well and truly set for an epic battle between light and dark but this particular book seemed to be missing a real, central storyline with any action of it's own.
We do meet the mysterious darkness which continues to threaten the Mystyx, but where Manifest had a story and mystery centred around a serial killer who is caught and brought to justice by our young heroes there is nothing really defining that happens in this book.
The book is very much a young adult book and I would place it firmly in the 14-16 year old category. As an adult reading this book I felt a little bit out of place but I can imagine that teenagers would identify strongly with the main characters. It does tackle some pretty serious issues for teenagers like race, segregation, cultural and social differences and peer pressure and these are handled well throughout.
Overall I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because although there are a lot of loose ends I enjoyed reading it. I think it is a great book for the teenage audience it is intended for and I am excited for the third book which I hope ties most of those loose ends up.

If you were on the fence about the first book, then rest assured that this entry will put you solidly in the “crazy about Mystyx” camp.
Sometimes being an outsider is the best way to fit in…

I liked the first book in the series, but I have to admit that I enjoyed this book more than the first one. Sasha’s a pretty tough cookie & a little more assertive at times than Krystal was in the first book. (Although I do have to say that Krystal seems to be coming into her own in this book as well.) It also helps that the chemistry between Sasha & her crush Antoine is really well written & comes across nicely. Readers will really find themselves rooting for these two.
The book still has a bit of the growing pains that the first volume did, but Author is getting more comfortable with the characters & the plot, which comes across in her style. You can really tell that she had a lot of fun writing this entry. I just really wish that there were more questions answered in this volume- I found myself really getting frustrated along with the characters that there weren’t any real answers to their questions just yet. Even so, I really do recommend checking this book out- it’s well worth reading.
Sometimes being an outsider is the best way to fit in…
Sasha Carrington has grown up feeling like an outsider, and her parents are too concerned with scaling the Lincoln, Connecticut, social ladder to even notice her. They’d be really horrified to know about the supernatural abilities Sasha and her friends Krystal and Jake possess. But as part of the Mystyx, Sasha has found her place. Now her parents have suddenly taken an interest in everything she does, and their timing couldn’t be worse. Sasha’s father wants her to become BFFs with snooty Alyssa Turner, who hates Krystal for stealing her boyfriend. Then there’s Antoine Watson, the boy Sasha has liked forever, the boy her parents would never approve of. But with the dark side getting more dangerous by the day, and the Mystyx’s own powers growing in unexpected ways, Sasha is facing choices that could affect her friends, her love life—and even her destiny…
One of the main things I enjoyed about this book was the main character, Sasha, she was a feisty kick-ass girl who despite pressure from family and so called friends, did not give in to the "I'm rich so therefore I'm better than you" train of thought. She was so much more refreshing than the whiny Krystal. I like that though tested, the friendship of the Mystyxs held firm. When you perceive yourself as "odd" and an outsider, it's comforting to have the unconditional support of friends. While this book did move along the storyline a lot more, I was a bit disappointed in the abrupt ending. Yes, it's a series so there's got to be a cliff hanger, but I guess I've been conditioned by series books to expect at least one bad guy per book to get his just desserts while the storyline moves on to the next character. I was pleased to see that "Mayham", (can't help but have the wonderful Allstate commercials flash through my mind, lol) book 3 centers around Jake and is due out on July 19th (WooHoo! my birthday) so I can't wait to tune back in for my Mystyx fix. Mystyx
I really enjoyed book one of this series but wasn't too taken with the angsty attitude of the main character and narrator, Krystal. My favourite character had been Sasha, who had an "attitude" but the fun, take no nonsense from anyone kind of 'tude. Imagine my delight to see that this book was written from Sasha's point of view.
Unfortunately, the change in character views really changed the plot of the story and it took me a while to get into this book. Sasha is not only the narrator, but the main character of the book, Krystal has a minor part. But the fun Sasha I loved from the first book is changed in this book, because the girl's rich, never present parents have returned with a new project for the community and they want Sasha to play a vital role. This is all about the "Richies" and Sasha is vehemently told off by her overbearing father about her choice of 'questionable' friends and told she will do what she has been told to do. This causes a riff between her and the other members of Mystyx who think that Sasha has become uppity about her social status when a hated rich girl starts hanging onto Sasha through her father's doing.
This is absolutely not the time for this to be happening to Sasha as her powers are becoming stronger and she is gaining new ones, learning much more about who they are and what their purpose is. The strained relationships make it hard for them to work together when the Darkness returns and bodies of missing teenagers start turning up.
Not as strong a story as Manifest; I didn't enjoy it as much even though I like Sasha as a character more. I missed the ghosts from book one and the book just had a totally different feel. I liked it but it wasn't a page-turner for me at all at. Hoping that the next book will be more exciting and wondering whose point of view it will be from now that a 4th member has joined there team, another girl.
Added: I just saw the cover of the third book and, yeah!, it has Jake on the front and thus, I'm assuming will be from Jake's point of view. Looking forward to it more now!
After reading and enjoying the first book in the series I was eager to see what was next for Krystal, Jake, and Sasha. The three friends each have special abilities and have banded together once already to solve a mystery. Mystify was narrated by Sasha and it helped me get to know and understand her character so much better. There was development on the other characters as well and the story was entertaining and creepy. I am excited to see what the third book, narrated by Jake, brings to the table!
To begin with, Sasha was a fun and sassy main character. It may seem like she was the perfect rich girl with the perfect life on the outside, but by reading her story I realized that things were not all fun and games in her house. Sasha had a lot of pressure from her parents to only associate with certain people and to only do what they wanted. Sasha stayed strong throughout and always stood up her what she believed in. The secondary characters were developed as well and I liked how not only did Sasha's peers play a part in the story, but their families as well. I've always liked Krystal and Jake, so it was fun to see them again and hear about them from Sasha's perspective. There were some new characters introduced, including a possible romantic interest for Sasha. Antoine Watson was a sweet and likable "bad boy" and his feelings for Sasha were obvious.
The plot of Mystify was just as fast paced and exciting as Manifest. I loved learning more about the Mystyx's powers and seeing the group work together to figure out the truth behind what was going on. There were a lot of spooky occurrences going on that tied in with the real world. The Mystyx had a lot on their plates not only with the mystery and darkness surrounding them, but with their personal lives as well.
Overall, this was an exciting and entertaining follow up to Manifest. The ending was a killer cliffhanger though and it makes me even more excited to read the third book.
Manifest was told from Krystal's point-of-view. Mystify comes to us from Sasha's point-of-view. It was fascinating to meet the next member of the three Mystyx characters. I really liked Sasha and how she saw things. She was a fascinating character and I enjoyed reading a book from her perspective.
The mystery of strange weather patterns and the darkness that seems to be overcoming their small town continues for the 3 "Mystyx" from Manifest. As they learn more in this book, the reader does as well and we are treated to new characters both good and bad. The storyline expands more in Mystify and makes me ready to read the next book. More romance follows as it did for Krystal in the first book, it does for Sasha in this book. But Mystify is not all about the romance, it's more of a side storyline to help develop Sasha's character. The real storyline is how the Mystyx are still trying to understand their powers and figure out what is happening in their home town and how they can prevent a horrible event from happening in the future.
It's a fascinating storyline and I was hooked through the whole book. Some big things happen but I didn't feel there was a big thing overall. This felt like more of a transitional book, though it can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed the book and I am definitely intrigued to read the next book as well. I really want to know what will happen to the characters and the epilogue has me scratching my head as well (in a good way).
If you enjoy a different type of paranormal from the typical (but fun) vampires and werewolves, then try out the Mystyx series. You can start with Manifest or just pick of Mystify. Both are entertaining books that have interesting characters and a plot that moves each book along at a great pace.
Sasha is one of the richies, but she doesn’t really fit in well with them. Her two best friends Krystal and Jake, are from the other side of the tracks. It’s never been a problem until now, when her parents decide she needs to be more prominent in the social world. And it couldn’t be worse timing. In case I forgot to mention, Sasha has powers. Like super powers. Like she can teleport. Her friends Krystal and Jake, they also have powers. They’ve used these powers once to catch a creepy old teacher, but now they’re realizing what their powers are really for and why they were chosen for them.
This is the second book in the Msytyx series. The first was told through Krystal’s eyes, this one is told through Sasha’s. The kids are growing through their powers, but also dealing with the normal high school shenanigans. Boys and crushes, girls and drama and parents always butting in.
The one thing I liked about the first one was that I could always follow what was going on. In this book, and maybe I started skimming and didn’t get the full description, I got confused at times talking about the bad guy/black stuff. I’m not 100% sure what it exactly is, and maybe that is the point, but I was lost and am still trying to grasp it.
The concept however intrigues me and I will keep my eye out for the rest of the series and I’m happy that another girl has joined the group. Maybe that means a 4th book is coming out. I’m a little nervous for the 3rd book, Mayhem, just because it’s told from Jake’s point of view. Kudos to Arthur for tackling being a woman writing in a man’s voice. I just hope I can relate. Eww boys!
Mystify is a really good book. It’s the first book I’ve read this year that I really loved. It talks about romance, horror and urban fantasy challenges. The book is about a teenage girl name Sasha who has grown up feeling like an outsider, and her parents are too concerned with scaling the Lincoln, Connecticut, social ladder to even notice her. she lives in a big house. their parents are rich. at first i thought it was going to be about a girl who spoiled but it turned out it wasn't Sasha is more of the type to be normal and doesn't brag about the things she gets. she isn't a drama girl. Which is good thing. but its strange how drama always seems to find her. What i like about the book was when antoine tries so hard to make Sasha his girlfriend its really romantic. It also reminds me of how my boyfriend tried so hard just to get my attention. just reading the first couple chapters made me like the book i got so excited to know what was going to happen next thats how good the book was. the book moved about slow it had lots of details and i like the character. The part i didn't like about the book was the ending i really think the author could of done a better job for the ending. I also didn't like that Sasha cant make up her mind about the boys flocking around her (it was just one boy but she actually couldn't really make up her mind, so that's partially true). I really recommend this book it talks a lot about drama, action,a few scary things, friendship, fighting, love. this book will teach you that the impossible things that are in fairytales can happen in real life. i love this book so much that i think they should make a movie about it.
This is another YA series that I continue to enjoy. Artist Author has created a paranormal adventure featuring a teenage clique of supernaturals that keep me tagging along as they deal with their personal dramas and use their powers to deal with the Darkness that is stalking them.
In the latest book, the story turns to Sasha. Her friends continue to judge her and think she’s a stuck up “Richie” simply because her parents are. I thought she was a likable character, a little bratty and spoiled at times, but overall she was more mature than her friends, Krystal and Jake.
Jake and Krystal got on my nerves in this book. I always thought that Krystal was self centered, but she really out does herself in this book. And Jake has serious anger issues. His story is the next book, so hopefully I’ll be able to have a better understanding of who he is and what he’s dealing with personally before I start to hate him.
A new member was introduced to the supernatural clique and she seems to balance out the trio which is a good thing because their friendship was seriously headed for an ugly break up.
I am anxious to figure out the mystery of the “M” birthmarks and how all the kids ended up in the same town or exactly why they have their powers. The mysteries are slowly unfolding, giving me just enough bits of information to keep me following the story.
Overall I really liked Mystify and will continue reading the series. I am very interested to know what in the world is going on with the Darkness and what it’s really after.
I’m a woman in her late forties and I had fun reading Sasha Campbell’s story. The book is marketed to young adults but I believe it should be read by all. The theme of acceptance is not removed from any group of people. Sasha Campbell has quite a bit going on she’s part of an elite group of teens known as the “Richies” rich being indicative of their parents money and living on the “right side” of the tracks. She is also part of a group called Mystyx; a group of kids with special powers, each one marked by the letter M as a birthmark. She also deals with overbearing girls at school and a budding teenage crush lurking behind doubt and classism. As if all of that is not enough her powers are changing and on top of learning who she is she just found out her body can astral travel. Without leaving her room Sasha can be at a party while her body is at home in what appears to those around it; hard sleeping. When we say having an out of body experience it means we feel different, for Sasha she is OUT of her body. To our ancestors, the weather brought about magic and mysticism, for Sasha and her friends they try to understand the phenomena and mystery of the all powerful weather and its connection to their powers and the darkness that continues to follow them. As a woman in her late forties I felt like I was experiencing a bit of my childhood again, to Sasha and her friends I say thanks for the ride. Artist wrote a really good book that teenagers will enjoy and learn a few lessons about segregation and classism. Good job Missy Readers Paradise 3 book marks
As the second in the Mystyx series, we move from Krystal in book one, with her ghost whisperer talents, to Sasha, who can split off and relocate herself wherever she wants. The other Mystyx in their group all have magical talents and have learned that there was a weather disturbance that coincides with the day they were born. What they can't figure out is why this overwhelming darkness is following them and threatening their lives.
As a short paranormal romance series, this is quick-paced and easy to get into. I actually like it for its easy drama, not blown out how-do-I-feel chapters or scenes. Sasha was an interesting character, and although I thought her "boyfriend" came on a bit strong and possessive in the book, I think that was meant to highlight his bad-boy status more than anything.
Although short and fast paced, I think this is a fun and easy set of characters, plot lines, and magical nuances to get into. There isn't much struggle figuring out how things work, and although character development is limited to our main character, you do feel like you get answers to your questions. My best suggestion for this series would be the junior high or high school crowd. These make a nice jump into paranormal romance without confusing you with too much back information on magic or family lines.
At the end of Manifest we were left off with a cliff hanger, yet weeks pass between that and Mystify it's sequel in the trilogy. And changes such as the POV are seen. No longer is this book in Krystal's POV, but in Sasha Carrington's, Krystal's friend and fellow Mystyx.
Sasha's story is completely different from Krystal's. It's still continuing the story line as we find out more about the Mystyxs and the power they are meant to defeat. But in the end Sasha's story is more about love and her powers developing, than anything. Unlike Krystal and Jake's powers, Sasha has a physical power to transport herself to and from places. Allowing her to go places others can't in mere seconds. But her story also continues with the romance line that started between Krystal and Ricky the ghost. Only with Ricky's brother Antoine, in which Sasha has a romance blooming.
As Sasha's powers grow, and her romance blooms, eminent danger is approaching for the Mystyxs. And Sasha might be the key to solving their problems. Check out Mystify by Artist Arthur your sure to love this series and the characters in it!
I wondered if I should read this, because after all I didn’t read Manifest, the first book in this series, but I did. I found it enjoyable, but nothing really stood out for me.
Sasha is strong, friendly and powerful. The relationship she has with her parents is a though one. Her parents are more into money then into their daughter. And she’s practically raised by the housekeeper. I wished Sasha would just stand up for herself and tell her parents that she need them to love her. But every time they expected her to play the good little rich girl, she just did.
I liked the relationship between Sasha and Antoine. He is sweet and very honest. The paranormal aspect was there, but I wished there was more of it. There are a lot of questions that are being raised while reading this book and I wonder if book three is going to give answers.
All in all I really enjoyed reading Mystify and I’ am looking forward reading book number three, Mayhem.
Artist C. Arthur delivers as usual. Although new to the young adult arena, she delivers yet again in this second installment of the Mystics series. Ms. Arthur is known for her work as a romance, erotic and paranormal author, but she appears to be able to write an entry in the telephone book and still make it sound phenomenal.
Sasha Carrington is a typical high school student that has all the normal teenage issues, plus a not so normal ability to teleport. Sasha and her three friends (who named themselves the Mystics) discover that they all had something in common. The M placed on their bodies along with individual "paranormal powers".
The Mystics are caught in a supernatural war that they know little about. What they do know is that they have to do all that they can to save the world and mankind.
This is a true series of good versus evil with a captivating storyline that will leave you craving for more. Ms. Arthur has created a modern day version of X-Men.
I enjoyed the first book of this series so when I was offered a chance to read the second I was very excited to. You get reintroduced to the three Mystyx in this book as well as a new one that joins the group, as well as a bunch of shocking secrets that get revealed throughout the book.
Another well done book with great characters, However, I am upset to say that one of my favorite characters in this book disappears towards the end I am hoping to see a return to this character soon as she made a big change to the way the story was told.
I liked the first book better but overall this book was good. I LIKED THAT SHE AND ANTOINE GOT TOGETHER!! I hated that the group somewhat split because Sasha is rich and so is Alyssa and Alyssa does things. So Sasha seems like a bad person.
