Michael Collier is an American photographer. His work is often aerial photography of landscapes. He was featured in a recent NPR show and photo montage narrated by Howard Berkes called Sky Vision.[1] Collier's photographs in the book The Mountains Know Arizona won the National Outdoor Book Award in 2004 for Design and Artistic Merit.
Collier used to have the job of rowing boats in the Grand Canyon. Collier currently practices medicine in Flagstaff, Arizona for his career. He also is a professor at the NAU School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability
Michael Collins is a geologist, pilot and aerial photographer. He's also an MD, which likely pays better and pays for his high-wing Cessna, the favorite of all geologists who want to do aerial reconnaissance. Speaking as one such . . .
This might well be his best book. Collier is a long-time Arizona resident (he went to school in Flagstaff), and Arizona Highways pulled out all the stops to make this a first-class production. 5-star book! And I don't rate many books a full 5 stars. I need to reread this one. Hmm, let's see if the library has a copy . . . Nope, wish list.
OK, I bought a copy, and it's just as good as I recalled. More later, but Arizona Highways did Collins photos proud, and Rose Houk is an excellent writer. Plenty of Collins' trademark aerial photos, yay!
1/26/23 reread: as good as I recalled, or better. Wonderful photos, beautifully-made book, graceful text. My used copy, advertised as VG, is substantially like new. Still a 5-star book! A must-read for Arizona mountain fans.
