MAN WITH A PAST... For Special Air Service agent Gray Lombard, the past seven years had been a nightmare. Not only had he been unable to nab his brother's killer, he'd also lost Samantha Munro, the only woman he'd ever loved. Seven years ago they had shared their dreams -- and the same bed. But when Gray's mission took over his life, Sam had walked away....
Now Sam was back. Her life was in danger, thanks to her involvement with Gray, and losing her was not something he wanted to relive. But could he protect her from a dangerous killer -- and safeguard his heart from the secret she had yet to reveal?
After working eight years for the New Zealand Forest Service as a clerk, she decided she could spend at least that much time trying to get a novel published.
Luckily it took five years, not eight, before Fiona wrote her first award-winning novel.
She has won the Australian Romantic Book of the Year award (category section) twice, one of her novels was listed by Romantic Times as one of their all-time top two hundred favorite romance books and she has been featured in Next and She magazines.
Fiona lives in a subtropical South Seas paradise called the Bay of Islands with her two sons.
I didn't like book 1, Cullen's Bride, but I really disliked book 2. It wasn't worse, it simply hammered home that I didn't understand her heroines and had no respect for them. Heart of midnight has the same format within a different plot: a woman who has no self respect nor pride, one tha doesn't/ can't live without a man. They accept every humiliation just to have those men. And here there's the added minus of an unfortunate fact of life (miscarriage) transformed into a tragedy. She was barely 4 months, but grieved as with a stillborn. I mean she had a grave for her 'daughter'. I know I sound insensitive, and probably am too, but at four months it was a tiny being barely formed and after a miscarriage it would have been blob. Sorry but sadly true. Without a history of miscarriages or a very advanced age, all that grief sounded heavy handed, unnecessary or false. (We are talking of 7 years of grief...) The more I read, the less I liked.

My Thoughts: Oh my God. Oh my God. I get giddy when I think about this book. Heart of Midnight was one of my very first Silhouette books, as well as one of my first Fiona Brand stories. I absolutely love Gray and Sam together. Their relationship is the main focal point in this book even with the secondary plot going on it doesn't get much attention. I was totally okay with that because I was in for Gray and Sam's background history. A little silly at times, gooey sweet at others, Heart of Midnight fulfilled me and is still a favorite of mine even after all these years.

One of Fiona Brand's earliest, and the first one I read. It's not a great work of literature or anything, but it's certainly a standout in category romance and memorable enough for me to be still reading Brand's work years later.
This is the second book in the series known as the SAS (Special Air Service) squad. Cullen's Bride was really good, and this one almost lived up to it....almost.
The thing that got to me most about this book is that Gray and Samantha had a past.....a significant past, and it would've been nice to see that story as well. I think I might've appreciated the chemistry between the two leads if I would've had more background.
Otherwise...just great. Gray is your classic alpha male...his only weakness being Sam. I like that Sam wasn't just sitting around waiting for Gray to come home, but was going on with her life. The chemistry was wonderful and the suspense was rivoting.
Blade, Gray's brother, is up next with Blade's Lady.
Probably more like 3.75 stars. It was my first by this author and I pulled it from someone's list on Amazon. I found it an easy read, but fairly sophisticated, suspenseful and steamy for a SIM. I'd definitely like to read something more current by Ms. Brand - there's real potential here.
