TW: Sexual assault, suicide, mental health.

I hate when an overall decent book includes just a few lines that ruin the whole thing, and in this one there were three things I couldn't get past.

One was the multiple mentions of rape fantasies or even bestial fantasies that crossed the line from "fantasize about what turns you on" into unethical and unhealthy. Another was a dismissal of concern in the FAQs about vaginismus and tension as being "rare and unlikely" instead of addressing a huge barrier to female sexuality and climax: trauma.

And finally, the kicker, in the first chapter, "Getting in the Mood", she says "It's impossible to be suicidal if you've had a manicure. Forget basket weaving - I'd give manic depressives an eyelash curler and a lipstick." I can't think of a more atrociously dismissive, invalidating, cruel, and flat out WRONG thing to say about mental health and confidence in the context of sex. This author needs a lesson or two on mental health before she should be giving advice to anyone.

In an otherwise decent book, this callousness on the part of the author, editor, and ultimately, publisher, has me unwilling to give it a good rating or recommend it at all. Simon & Schuster should be embarrassed to have okayed a book with such disastrous comments on mental health.
