Cocky Hero Club

Egotistical Enemy

Rate this book
Drake Thomas is my best friend’s brother and the last person I expected to rescue me from my fear of flying.
That’s exactly what my sexy, egotistical enemy did when he turned our missed flight into a road trip adventure filled with the unexpected - like the undeniable sexual tension between us.
I may have hated the man, but there is no denying that I wanted him. And he wanted me, too.
Then I had to go and make the mistake of crossing that thin line between hate and love knowing that we would never last.
It was just a road trip fling. We just wanted to have some fun.
When it comes to Drake – I learned to expect the unexpected.

L.M. Reid writes contemporary romance that is filled with emotion and a whole lot of steam. Her heroines are strong and feisty, and her heroes are sweet and sexy.

L.M. loved reading as a child and really fell in love with books while reading the Babysitter’s Club. The series spurred her love of writing leading her to create her own series as a kid – “Best Friend’s Forever.”

Growing up watching soap operas, L.M. has always had a flair for the dramatic and a love of all things romance.

She is just a Midwest girl with simple tastes and dirty thoughts.

She lives in the state where they swear there is more than corn, with her husband and son. She’s an iced coffee addict and loves Swedish Fish. While her heart belongs to romance, she loves curling up on the couch with a good, or bad, horror movie.

It missed the mark, but not by much. I’m not sure whether it’s a matter of personnal taste, or the author somehow led me on.

Here we have an enemies to lovers romance in an interesting setting: they’re stuck together during a road trip. And because no one can stay silent for days, Piper and Drake ends up hashing out their past and present. Drake is Piper’s friend’s brother, and when they were kids, he wasn’t very nice with her. To be honest, I didn’t see what all the fuss was about–Drake didn’t deserved all the hate Piper said she felt about him.

On top of that, he keeps showing her that he’s a nice guy, but she can’t seem to be able to let it go for way too long. Okay, he kept teasing her, but it wasn’t that bad really–and I hate bullying so I’m not minimizing things.

Drake’s attraction to Piper came a bit out of nowhere. Sure, she’s pretty, but it felt a bit too instalove/instalust for me. The author could have kept silent about Drake lusting after Piper, and it would have changed nothing in the story. The tension and hostility between them was a bit artificial so the first kiss didn’t have the impact it should have.

I was still surprisingly drawn to the characters. It’s probably their dynamic that seduced me, and the way they explore this new relationship between them. They talk a lot, bicker some, support each other, and open their heart. Some. Drake keeping his story a secret didn’t sit well with me. I can maybe understand that it was a way for him to protect himself, to not become involved. Maybe.

But my main complaint is that, after insisting on Drake’s grief and how it keeps him from letting himself love again, and after getting them back together as friends in order to help Drake recovering, there’s nothing about the healing process on the page. Piper comes back for him, promises him that she’ll be there for him, we have a couple depictions of how it happens, and that’s it! Drake’s healed and he wants to have a life with Piper! I felt robbed of something I was promised. The roadtrip was nice, but I wanted to see Drake’s emotional journey.

Quickie

- Series: standalone (but part of the Cocky Hero Club)
- Hashtags: #enemies to lovers #no strings attached #best friend’s brother #road trip #widower
- Triggers: mention of cheating, grief, mention of car accident
- Main couple: Piper Davis & Drake Thomas
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + Drake’s take on his wedding vows was interesting
- – where is the healing?

Matthew, Tristian and Thea’s story continues and the challenges they must overcome has just begun. There is no denying the love that they share but they must decide if they are willing to fight to be together or make the easier choice and go their separate ways.

Thea is still trying to overcome her past, Tristian is struggling between what is expected of him and what he wants and Matthew realizes that despite his unconventional upbringing the one thing he can count on is for his family to always be there to support him and those he loves.

Matthew, Tristian and Thea take us on a tumultuous ride that will draw you in and have you invested in their happy ever after as they prove that as long as they have each other there is nothing they can’t overcome.

Drake has a younger sister who is Piper's best friend, and because of childhood antics, Piper can't stand him. Fast forward to everyone being all grown up, Drake runs into Piper at the airport as they're both on the way home, he sees that Piper simply can't get on the plane (she has a terrible fear of flying) so he offers to drive them instead. Piper isn't happy about it since she still can't stand Drake, but she decides it's the lesser of two evils. It's super hard to stay quiet on a road trip, and it's not too long before they're talking, and maybe just maybe hashing out their past since they're in close proximity, not to mention Drake really is a good guy. I enjoy an enemies to lovers story, but I had a little bit of a hard time of Piper despising him for the past because while it wasn't ideal, it wasn't over the top either. On top of that issue, Drake has some healing to do, and he's not about to reveal anything to her which also frustrated me since I'm nosy so he needed to talk after the talking she did but that's just me. Despite those two issues, this author is highly addictive so I finished it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down & needed to know if they could get past everything for a shot at happily ever after. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Best Friend's Brother troop

Piper has been best friends with Kara most of her life and who is also Drake's little sister. Growing up Drake nicknamed her Pipes which of course he got the whole school calling her and she hated beyond belief.

Drake is an app designer. He does some for businesses and the game world. He’s created some on his own, some of which have crashed and burned and some which have taken off and done quite well.

When he is at the airport to go back home he see’s Piper of all people in front of him trying to board the plane. Piper has a terrible fear of flying and can’t get on the plane. Drake tries to help her with breathing techniques but nothing works to calm her down. He suggests that they rent a car and drive from California back to South Carolina for her parents' anniversary party. Piper thinks it’s a bad idea being alone with Drake for so long. But he is willing to help her. How bad can it be driving across the country with your secret crush?

Both Piper and Drake have faced their fair share of heartaches. What happens when they get to their hometown? Will everything change between them

I did receive a FREE ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

Egotistical Enemy was so awesome!! I really loved Piper and Drake and going along on their individual journeys. Drake's involved healing, or at least taking those steps, but Drake is so far down in his pain that you wonder if he'll ever be willing. Piper just so happens to be at the airport to go home for a party for her parents, she runs into Drake when she chickens out of getting on her flight so Drake offers to drive since he just so happens to be going home too. Drake and Piper know each other because Piper is besties with Drake's sister, so of course they have known each other for awhile, but haven't seen each other in a long time so have no idea what the other has been up to. Piper thinks she has Drake all figured out, and doesn't believe for a moment that he could have changed...in other words, grown up. For that I did kinda want to smack Piper, but as time went on, she did see that Drake wasn't who she thought he was, and Drake certainly liked what he saw in Piper even though he really didn't want to and he was so confused by his feelings and in turn left Piper confused with his push/pull thing he had going on. This road trip they went on was so good for both of them, because they got to know each other as adults, and they talked about what they've gone through...ok, she talked, he let out little bits and pieces. What happens when they get home, will everything change between them, will Drake open up about what he's been through, and still going through and will they ultimately decide they need each other?? Y'all will just have to read this amazing book to find out!!

Ooh...going on a cross-country road trip alone with your best friend's hot-but-arrogant brother? Sign me up! I mean, how could Drake be so bad? He stopped Piper's panic attack and gave her another reason to get home. How bad could he possibly be? Piper had her reasons, but I loved that they were able to let go and enjoy the ride even if there were multiple things holding them back. She was sassy with a bite and he was confident with a smirk. There were some tears too, but I loved it!

PHENOMENAL!! MUST READ! 📚
I fell in love with Piper and Drake. Talk about enemies to lovers. And best friends brother. Everything that Piper felt throughout the story is so true to life. Being hurt and swayed to do things happens more often than people know. I could understand how hard it was to put trust in Drake. I could feel the pain Drake was going through after such a tragic loss. These two together though is explosive and fun. They heat up the sheets once they finally give into the chemistry between them. It's a wild ride as they travel back home. It has all the feels one would want in a great story. When an author can make me feel a part of the story and draw out my emotions, then they've created a phenomenal story. This author did that for me. The author is new to me, and I'm a huge fan now!

M REID has once again outdone herself and delivered another home run right outta the ballpark . Egotistical Enemy was everything I could have hoped for and so much more .The perfect blend of so many of my very favorite tropes . Brothers best friend, second chances and enemies to lovers . I certainly was not prepared for all the unexpected and different emotions I was going to feel while reading both Piper and Drakes emotional rollercoaster of a love story . And it’s definitely not a easy one . Both have been through some tough times In their lives and are still dealing with with the baggage . But one thing is undeniable and that’s the instant connection they share and the fact that every time they are together sparks fly . But the question is do they have a chance at a relationship with one another. Can they open their hearts up long enough to let each other in and find love and trust and a happiness. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time heart beating so fast . There were moments I would have a smile on my face and others I’d find myself crying .it’s the type of love story that has the ability to grab onto all your emotions so fast and pull at your heartstrings in ways you will not be expecting. Intriguing, heartfelt, heartbreaking, romantic, tragic, angst , humor , witty banter , obstacles, family , friendships, steamy , , awesome world building, unforgettable, unputdownable and so so much more

Piper moved away from home after finding out her boyfriend cheated on her.
Now, nine months later, she’s ready to go home for her parents’ party. But she’s afraid of flying.
While fleeing the airport, she runs, literally, into Drake, her best friends’ older brother. The one who didn’t care about anyone else in high school and who gave her the nickname Pippy/
When Drake sees the terror on Piper’s face, he suggests to go on a road trip together instead of the plane.
While she still despises him, she accepts. At first, the ride is very uncomfortable, even though Drake is trying to break the ice.
But the longer they spend time on the road, the more they open up, and the attraction grows.
But can this fling during the road trip lead to more, or are the ghosts from Drake’s past to big to ignore?

I love L.M. Reid’s books, you get sucked into the story from the beginning. I read this book in one sitting, just couldn’t put it down.
The way the story goes, and when we learn more and more about the past, for both of them, and how that has turned them into the person they are today, was emotional. The loss Drake has endured, makes him doubt if he’s worthy to love and be loved again.

I had high hopes for this book because one of the tropes was best friend’s brother – one of my favorites. But unfortunately, this one fell flat for me.

Piper and Drake grew up together, and when they were kids, he was a little mean to Piper, but honestly, I didn’t see it as that bad. Sure there was some teasing, but he wasn’t cruel to her. To me, it just seemed like he was being a kid, and as someone who hates and has been the victim of bullying, I hate it. I felt like Piper was overreacting a bit and that Drake didn’t deserve all the hate he got.

I also thought that Drake’s attraction to Piper was way too quick. I don’t care about insta-love, sure I think reading it is a bit odd, but it doesn’t generally bother me. However, I felt like Drake’s was a bit much and unrealistic.

In saying that, I was still drawn to them bantering and bickering with one another. There was chemistry there; I won’t deny that. I enjoyed them supporting each other, but I didn’t like how Drake kept his full story a secret – if you really want to open up to someone, you tell them about your grief. I felt like we were a bit robbed of seeing Drake go on a journey of healing. It was an okay book, just not close to one of my favorites.

This is my first book I have read by this author but it certainly won’t be the last because this was a perfect story to add to the world of Cocky Hero’s. If you love best friends brothers romances that are also mixed with enemies to lovers you will love Drake and Piper’s story.
Piper needs to get home but as she is about to get on the plane she has a panic attack and it’s her best friends brother (who she can’t stand) who comes to her rescue and he offers her a road trip to get them both home. What follows is a wonderful journey that captivated me. It’s a journey where Drake and Piper need to face their pasts so will this road trip make or break them…. One click to find out.
I loved the characters and I was drawn into their story, it’s a well written journey that will appeal to a wide range of audiences and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to read more by the very talented

This is a fantastic addition to this amazing series, and this is Piper and Drake’s journey. Piper is at the airport to fly home for her parents’ anniversary, and her fear of flying brings on a panic attack. Drake is Piper’s best friends’ brothers, and her secret crush, and when he witnesses Piper battling with her demons, he suggests hiring a car as they are both heading home. These two have a love / hate scenario, but the more time they spend together they get to know each other as adults. This is a beautifully written story which is an emotional roller coaster, with loss, intrigue, heartbreak, family, friendships, and love, which leads to an entertaining and compelling page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

LM is a go-to author for me and I really enjoyed this book! It has a little bit of everything, best friend,’s brother, road trip and a bit of enemies to lovers. Piper and Drake’s adventure will have you laughing and swooning.

I love road trip stories and this one is fantastic!! The banter, sass and tension between these two is sooo good!

Both Piper and Drake have been through a lot and have some baggage, but Drake comes to Piper’s rescue when she needed it. There is chemistry between the two but they are trying to push the feelings away. The further they get into their road-trip/adventure they begin to trust and open up to each other. What will happen between them once they reach their final destination? You will have to read to find out.

Highly recommend!

Title: Egotistical Enemy
Author: L.M. Reid
Format: eBook
Genre: Romance, enemies to lovers, best friend's brother, road trip, fling
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Series: Part of the Cocky Hero Club
POV: Piper, Drake
Steam Level: Steamy at times
4/5

Egotistical Enemy is a fun new book in the Cocky Hero Club. It's been a while since I've read one of the books in this series and it was fun seeing Chance and Aubrey and their goat. Egotistical Enemy is both light-hearted but also deals with tough situations including moving on after loss and setting boundaries for relationships. Great addition to this series.

I received an advanced copy of this book for free. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Road trip of discovery...

I was smitten with Piper and Drake. These two have known each other for years. Drake is the brother of her best friend Kara. Drake was always arrogant and constantly teased and tormented Piper endlessly. He was always full of himself and could have any woman he wanted without even trying. Piper had a crush on him in spite of the way he treated her. But his actions towards her made her feel hateful towards him and it stuck throughout her adult life.

Piper is travelling home to celebrate her parent's anniversary, but she has a severe fear of flying. At the last minute before boarding the plane, she bolts. She crashes into a gorgeous man, and that man is Drake. He convinces her to drive with him so they can get to the party in time. On the trip they both realize they are trying to escape and mend wounds that have happened in their pasts.

Their story is passionate and emotional as they are drawn towards each other. All the feels are in this story and I loved it.

the way i described this is my reading journal is comical.

"forbidden love/brothers best friend/enemies to lovers. Drake is (homegirl whos name I cant remember)s brothers best friend. she hates him but apparently not enough to get over her fear of flying to not go on a road-trip with him. so they go on this road-trip and long story short she realizes he ain't that bad they start fucking and fall in love."

I said long story but its just the saying the book itself is actually only 198 pages I'm pretty sure I read it in one work shift. also they were on their way home for the holidays that's why the whole thing happened. its a really good book tho good spice 🌶🌶🌶

I received an ARC for an honest review. This is my first book from this author and I thought it was a good read.

Piper hates Drake with a passion when we are introduced to these characters. He is her best friends brother and her nemesis from when they were younger. But is Drake the same guy as he used to be??

After meeting in the airport and missing their flight due to some flying issues, they decide to road trip it back home and this is where the fun begins.

This was a good story. The connection between these two was lovely. Was it my favourite read of the year? No, but I still enjoyed it enough to want to see how their story ended and I'm glad I did. I'm really glad Drake was able to overcome his guilt and allow himself to love again ❤️

Thank you again for the ARC.

A sexy and fun enemies to lovers and brother's best friend romance. Piper and Drake were phenomenal and had amazingly hot chemistry. Piper is afraid of flying and Drake offers to drive her home instead of taking the plane. Drake is Piper's best friend's older brother and her enemy since childhood. Now, traveling together, Piper can't deny an attraction to him. They say it's a fine line between hate and love. Can this road trip romance become more? I really enjoyed this story.

3 out of 5 Stars

This was kind of exactly what I expected it to be. The word egotistical was used wayyyy too many times. It was a bit on the nose. Actually, all of the writing was a bit on the nose. It makes absolutely no sense that she's never heard of her best friend's brothers wife. That is something that you would talk about with your best friend. Idk, I know it was a short book, but it all felt a little rushed.

A cutesy romance book from my romance reveal book box. This is my third read from my book haul box and I read it during a 24hr readathon challenge.

I wasn’t expecting the dead wife trope but the author handled it okay. Drake the MMC had a weird sense of loyalty to his deceased wife-it was okay to be physical with any woman but to be emotionally connected to someone was a big no-no.

The ending was very cute and it was sweet to see these two characters reconnect and fall in love.

It's a good book, lots of emotions in this book. It could be a trigger for anyone who has lost a partner in their lives, but it also shows what someone might be going through at the same time. I only rated it 3 stars because of the ending. They finally got together, and that was it nothing more.

Best friends brother and enemies to lovers.........all in one book. I enjoyed Drake and Piper's journey as they traveled back home. Can these two come together or will they go their separate ways once they are at home? Drake pestered her when she was younger and she really hates that but as they travel, you see that each of them have changed. Will it be enough?

I enjoyed reading this best friend’s brother by L.M Reid who was a new author to me. This was a fun book that was well written and I was hooked from the start. This book is part of The Cocky Hero Club but can be read as a standalone. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion.

This was a new to me author, but I absolutely loved her contribution to this world. Piper and Drake were the perfect enemies to lovers. A best friend's brother romance, Piper had been hurt enough in her life, and to let someone else help her was hard for her to do. But Drake didn't give up hope.

Their chemistry was off the charts and kept me riveted to my kindle. I'm so glad I was able to review this book, because it was definitely keeping me on my toes!
