This story lacked a clear plot throughout it and the characters didn't make up for the loss. Everything felt on the surface and the chemistry between the main characters was nowhere to be found. I think I built this story up so much in my head that when I finally sat down to read it my expectations were too high.

From the beginning, music and her brother and sisters are a big part of who Violet is. After the mafia storyline kicks into place it mostly disappears, only making an appearance here and there much later on. What I'm trying to say is that it became an afterthought even though it was presented as an integrally important thing to the heroine. That being said, I didn't really connect with the heroine, at all. I liked her initial spunk though.

I also couldn't connect with the hero. I didn't feel the so-called chemistry they had either. I disliked how there was supposed to be this huge obstacle between them being together but after the "uprising", it suddenly wasn't a problem anymore. I wish it was more dragged out or maybe less rushed.

Though I didn't guess the plot twists only the second one really hit home. There was something fishy clearly going on but I wasn't expecting what actually happened. Though as violent as that was the rest of the novel was SO tame. Considering this is a mafia story I was expecting it to be much darker and way more violent than it actually was. The veneer of "changed ways" and "legal dealings" that Viktor promoted to Violet was just that it seemed.

Overall, I think all my issues with this novel can be summed up with the writing. It wasn't necessarily bad but it didn't captivate me either. The ending was way too upbeat for being a mafia series. These people are supposed to be in the criminal underbelly. How do they get to live relaxed lives now that they've prevailed from exactly one gruesome event (I've only read this book in this series so I'm probably wrong about that number)? Then again, that's what I imagine the mafia to be and I'm probably very wrong about it. I guess this is a case where my imagination filled in the blanks for a story and what I actually got didn't prove itself to be better than my imagination.

I liked the plot set up in this book, and I knew I'd like Violet and Anton since we met them already in Roman's book, but this one is more of a prequel and the backstory to how they met.

But - this book felt super short. I wish we had gotten more pages of Violet and Anton together, of Violet and Roman getting to know each other (since in this one they're a bit prickly but in Roman they're already chummy)... maybe more of what happened between this book and Roman's (after "the incident").

Loved the concept and couple, though. It was bodyguard romance meets forbidden meets "he works for your dad".

Also! Like 20% in I was like "why does this book feel different?" -- it's in 3rd person! I checked and others in this series and her others are all in first.

Anton was a very interesting installment in the series here. It fits with the rest of the series though. I won't say that this was super impressive or anything. It was an average read, it was short and quick and was super fast paced which I loved. I enjoyed the romance as a whole but there were many plot holes in the story but as this is one of her shorter books, its going to have that. I wish there was more time with the couple though. The set up was super unique and fun though and I enjoyed the dynamics that gets implemented here. I just hoped for more depth and this definitely could have been a story that could have been longer in length as it felt like it was just missing some things. It was a quick read but I do wish this series had more depth and length to the stories. But still a solid fun read.

Until now.”

i wish i read these next few books before any of sophie's books because they dont even compare. nothing exciting, i probably would have like this if this was my first sophie lark book.

is this worth a read? no not really especially if you read roman.

also idk where the romance came from. it was mostly about violets background/family.

This book is not even that long but I felt like it went on forever. The ending was rushed though. Chronologically this is a prequel to Roman. The whole series order is weird. The original series order wasn't the one you currently see on Goodreads. When the series was called Colors of Crime, the series actually started with Luca (previously titled Sapphire) and ended with Dom (previously titled Ash) so yeah it's a bit of a mess. I get why the author reordered them. The best ones are the first 4 novels which were published last and were in first person point of view. The other 4 are told in the third-person point of view. I read these were the author's first books and she used to write in the third person point of view. I have to say she did improve by switching to a first-person point of view.

The book is about Violet (Roman's sister) and Anton (we met him already in the book "Roman".)

This is a prequel to Roman. But since Roman is first in this reading order we already know the plot twist and everything that's going to happen. This book also takes place after the events of Luca and Black so you kinda do get a bit spoiled on what's going to happen in those books though nothing major. I don't know if it would be truly better to read the books in chronological/publication order because the author changed the order for a reason. She said people didn't like those books and were not continuing the series. When she changed up the order she got a much better result.

I liked that we got to see Roman how he was before. In Roman, he loves Violet very much and they get along great as brother and sister. In this book, he doesn't like Violet at all upon meeting her. He is rude, jealous, and petty. It was funny. I enjoyed Anton and Violet better in Roman's book. I think maybe their story disappointed me a little.

I keep forgetting the recurring theme here is Instalove. You cannot pinpoint a moment in which Anton and Violet start to fall in love. They just fall in love at first sight. Overall just an okay read. It was a bit boring at times.

Everything else except the romance was good lmao 😭

The first half was intriguing and I loved the family relationships in this: Violet with her adopted siblings, Violet with her blood brother Roman and father, then Anton with Violet's father, Viktor who is the head of the Turgenev family (Anton is Viktor's right-hand man/bodyguard and I loooved how much Anton cared for Viktor like his real dad).

But then... Violet and Anton's romance turned super boring. I didn't care past 60% of the book. There were lots of telling and not showing about how 'insane their chemistry was' and that 'they were so attracted to each other they couldn't stop thinking about one another bla bla'. Like where??? ??

There was maybe only one memorable scene where Vi and Anton connected emotionally, but then they were suddenly in love. The emotional depth wasn't enough for me to believe they were truly in love by the end.

I don't think I'll love the next books in this series as much as I loved Ivan & Snow (also Stolen Heir & Broken Vow << these are fucking unbeatable GEMS), but miles better than The Heir 🤡

so Anton was kinda dreamy😌✨if we have had a proper moment for the romance, he would’ve been one of the most dreamy heroes so far.

the problem with this one was that it ended too quickly :( I think this was written before the first 4 because it’s written in 3rd person which is something Sophie used to do in her early books. Maybe that’s why the pacing and length are a bit lacking, like her first books.

But Violet was nice. Víctor too. The story was okay. Once we met Anton and he and Violet starting having that tension. WHEW, I felt hot 😩🔥 I actually felt the connection between them. But then… I just wish we could’ve seen them talk more. And that it wasn’t that fast. Also the jump into “im in love” was not smooth at all heh. It kinda ruin it for me.

the chronological order of this series is all over the place, once I finish the series I’ll tell y’all the best way to read them :) (including the Kingmakers series) I got u

p.s. so Violet’s roommate didn’t care about her or…?? she was erased from the story lmao.

Best book of the series this far!!! This was the WOW factor I was looking for in this series. It was very twisty and for once I didn't figure it out. I knew something was going to happen but wasn't sure what or who was going to do it. Anton and Violet had TONS of chemistry they were HOT together. I am a sucker for mafia romance though so this was right up my alley. I definitely think the next book will be good and I am going to read it.

Great book love it. Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review.

There were parts of this story that were good but other parts that felt rushed or unfinished. Music had been such an integral part of this story and then it just was dropped. There was also the idea that the characters couldn't be together since Anton wasn't a Vor but then everything is hunky-dory. The ending happened fast but doesn't address the issues at hand. I just wanted more because this book had the potential to be so much more.

The fifth book in the Underworld series by Sophie Lark tells the story of Anton and Violet. The Underworld series was first published under a different name, Colors of crime, and the order of the books have been changed in the Underworld series. I don’t know why they changed the order, there isn’t an apparent reason for me. But this change leads to the reader now reading a book, where they already know the outcome.

Time wise this book plays long before Roman. In ‘Anton’ we follow Violet’s story, how she meets Anton and learns about her real father and family history. She’s slowly becoming part of the Bratva family in this and learning how to cope with that. I thought the story was boring, because there was nothing at stake, I already knew everything that was going to happen.

The writing in this was so much worse than in the first books, especially compared with Roman. It’s written in 3rd person, which I don’t like and feels a lot like an early work from Sophie Lark. I think I could have forgiven that, if I hadn’t already read the first books in this series.

If you already have read Roman, I don’t think it’s necessary to read this book. If you haven’t, I advise you to read this book before you get to the other books.

An adjustment needed to be made from the usual first-person perspective in the rest of the series to the third-person one in this story, but the perspective shift adds to the idea of memory. This is a prequel to ‘Roman’ and this story is one we’ve already heard before briefly to now be expanded upon and filled with detail.

It was so good to get insight on Violet, Roman’s sister, and her relationship with Anton when we got introduced to her already married to Anton and pregnant in Roman’s story. I also really enjoyed that despite the book title being ‘Anton’, we mainly see Violet’s perspective as it’s mainly her story.

A bit slow paced at times but so, SO good with filling in the gaps.

4-star review!!!

I have been waiting for Anton and Violet’s story since I read Roman and the plot definitely did not disappoint. I loved their dynamic and the way they got together. I just wish we could have gotten more from Anton’s POV. Nevertheless, Sophie’s books never disappoint and I totally recommend this one!

i finished this in one sitting bc i’m not fasting and i was super bored and this was super short (skipped over the spice anyways it’s getting boring lols)

also it’s very stupid that this was after roman bc if you’ve read roman you already know all the ‘plot twists’ that happen if you could even call them that.

overall consensus: extremely boring and i hated that i knew everything already but it was short tho 🤷🏻‍♀️

Violet was having a bad day: someone robbed her money, stole her guitar, and then she is invited to meet the mob. Can she sing her way out of this?

Violet holds many jobs and many of them relate to singing. One of them is at a Russian bar where the visiting mafia dons hold their meetings. All Violet does there is sing though, until one night she is called over to a table to meet with people you do not say “no” to.

The next thing she knows she is kidnapped in the middle of the night. Her kidnapper is the one man who lights who blood on fire. He also just happens to be the second guy in charge of the man who wants her kidnapped. Now all she has to do is not lose her heart while trying to escape the Russian mafia. Simple.

Sophie Lark writes a great premise for Violet: A Dark Mafia Romance (Amazon, B081819P9G, 2019) her third book in the “Colors of Crime” series. I think I would have liked a little bit more conversation about how Violet was a dead-ringer for her mother before Viktor sees Violet.

The story is fun and filled with sarcasm, action, sex, and intrigue. I have to say that even I did not see the ending coming and I have watched a lot of Lifetime movies (laugh). You will be surprised by the choices and by the actions. Everything happens quick and decisively. The story moves along and before you know it you are at the end saying “holy sugar!” Well that’s what I said. Whew!

The only other thing that confused me was why the book was ending with the point-of-view of Violet’s brother who I did not even know. It was not until I was writing this review that I even realized this book was part of a series. So yes you can read it as a standalone (laugh).

I recommend this book for the adventure, humor, and yes the sex. (laugh - at least I am typical) The ending (minus the last chapter) is totally worth the book - and no do not skip ahead because you will not get it. (tsk tsk tsk) Enjoy my rainbows. ✶✶✶✶

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Anton and Violet!!! I really liked this couple a lot - finally some chemistry!!!! And -of course I am all about the Russian mafia storyline...which is really just getting started!! Enjoyed this book more than the first 2 but the downside is these books are way too short to really get the good meat of a story and pace of everything....but I'm still enjoying the series!! Also to note at the end of this book it said - see more Anton and Violet in Kingmakers. Someday I will pick up that series too!!

My order PSA soapbox?!?! continuing on reading this as book #3 of this underworld series, instead of 5th. Which I believe has me reading in chronological order - as the author wrote them and as it's all playing out in the overall arching story. So far each book has picked up right where the last one left off. The series for me, started with Luca and the love triangle, which lead us into Byron in Black and finishing his story, and then this book with Byron's sister Violet. Next up will be Nikolai - which if I have all my peoples correct....this will be Violet's cousin Nadia's story. Again, I am really perplexed at the reorder...especially as I read peoples reviews. People are so confused and then don't like the couple or the story because there is no backstory - duh?!?! hoping it makes more sense once I am done.

This is an interesting, slightly dark mafia romance with mild mythology undertone & it can be read as a standalone. The plot is well-paced & intriguing with some unexpected surprises & situations, there is some good scene descriptions. The complex characters are quite well-developed & portray realistic emotional feelings although one of them is quite naïve in the beginning of the story but continues to mature throughout the story-line while the other one is determined to resist her.
There is: a talented young female singer (Violet) is noticed by a second-in-command Bratva boss (Anton) & is promptly abducted by him when his boss (Viktor Turgenev) orders the abduction, twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, Russian Bratva, secrets, mystery, family issues, adventure, action, attractions, longings, threats, danger, violence, conflict, deceit, betrayal, death, murder, abduction, discovery, warnings, alliances, manipulations, confrontations, protectiveness, contentment, happiness, love, some steam & a satisfying conclusion.

Violet a singer songwriter, although some may call her struggling. Violet considered herself, more of a free spirit, and finding her own way on the road less traveled. So when her guitar is stolen while she is running after a thief trying to steal her tip money. Violet is heartbroken for both the loss of the guitar that was her once her mothers, and for the loosing such a coveted spot playing that subway location. Knowing she could not afford to buy a new/old guitar, she could barely afford rent, even with 2 jobs.

Anton is lieutenant in the Russian Mafia, he may have not been born in to it like most, but that didn’t mean he was any less dedicated. So when he realizes both he and his boss are interested in Violet....even if for different reasons Anton must now take in a different role.

I love the clashing of two worlds in Sophia Larks “Violet”.

This is my 2nd Sophie Lark Book, lol kind of out of succession but enjoyed it non the less, and it def helped to make more sense of the beginning Emerald..

Style: Mafia Romance
Story: 4/5
Sexual: SEX-CITINGLY GOOD
Enjoyment: 4/5
Series: Book 3

I have never read the first 2 books in the series. However, this one and a few others peeked my interest.

I really enjoyed this story. The author, painted a good picture in the beginning of Violet, going into details on her life, and I was not bored. I actually wanted to learn more about her. Her chemistry with Anton, was just right for me. I like the pace, build up and fireworks.

Overall, good read for me. It says dark in the title, but compared to other dark novels, it wasn’t that dark, but still a good read. I am actually looking forward to reading the other books I had picked out from this long series, as I’m still not sure I want to read all of them.

***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s definitely about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the stories you read. I hope this review was helpful.

I was so surprised how bad this book was that my mind is blown . Technically speaking the book isn’t that bad , it’s just compared to the other books in the series it is very disappointing. There wasn’t much of anything in this book barely any conflict or action which was resolved in one chapter , the romance also was like a couple of chapters . I didn’t feel any chemistry or connection . Then I found out that this was a very early work from the author and the publication order of the books in the series has changed and I kind of understand, I mean for a first time writer the book isn’t so so bad but still it kinda of is . I just can’t believe how better the other ones are or I don’t know , I was just really enmeshed with those characters…. Anyway this books felt a lot longer then it actually was and I’m glad it’s over. I’m curious how the rest of the books are , I’m gonna finish the series now but I’m kinda afraid of it , I’m not really having high hopes here .

Reading this book was very enjoyable, I finished it the same day. I liked the characters very much, especially Violet, I loved how passionate she was about her music. And Anton, how could you not fall for him?

On the other side, the story was very interesting, with many twists that I didn't see coming. The steamy was very hot, I was expecting them to be more frequently. However, the few smut scenes were really good.

Although, one of the things that I didn't like about it, and seemed weird to me was the lack of reaction of the characters to the sudden situations they were in, specially Violet. A secret about her family changes her life radically, and yet it really isn't reflected on her behavior. I just don't understand how she could be so calm about it all. Hence the 4 stars.

It's a very recommendable book for young adult readers who enjoy a good mafia love story.

2/5 🌶️

It was really short, so it was definitely lacking some detail and more depth into was these two could have been. I really did like that it was switched around so now the fmc was the one in a powerful family, while the mmc was the bodyguard and had to build up into it.

my other thing, I’m not 100% sure why this one didn’t come first in the series, before Roman. Maybe the idea came later on but it would had made more sense. Since this is 2 years before Roman and we meet Violet in that one. Cause I was like, wait where is Mila and then I understood😂

Something else…I think this was the first 3rd person book written by Lark. I thought I was going crazy but I went back to her other books and I was right. I’m not a big fan of it but I mean…to new things right?😅

I’m not sure what was going on in this series but this book definitely should have come before “Roman.” I think the series got a rebrand maybe? I wouldn’t be surprised if I learned this was Sophie Lark’s first book ever. Her writing has changed and evolved immensely and reading this felt like going backwards.

The third person POVs really took me out of the story and for such a short book, it felt like a slog to get through. That being said, when reading “Roman,” I felt like I was missing a chunk of the story with Violet so it was nice to go back and fill in those pieces. If you decide to read this series, I would read this book first so you have more context for other books.

Leave it to me to read this out of order because my interest was piqued for Violet and Anton in Rowan’s book.

I’m actually glad I read this right after, since it filled in some of the blanks regarding Violet and Rowan coming together (with Anton).

Violet is a musician, but never knew where her musicality came from until she discovered her father. And Anton is strong and stoic. I wouldn’t say it’s grumpy/sunshine, but it’s along the same lines, which I love.

In terms of spice, this isn’t at the same level as Sophie’s other books. If you’re looking for those scenes, the first one doesn’t happen until around the 70% mark. So this is more of a slow burn.

I did enjoy the plot to this book, although it was fairly predictable and I saw both the twists coming.

However, there were so many mistakes (quoting British money as pounds and a lot of American words which Brits just don't use) and no continuity that I was frustrated throughout most of the book. I don't really like third person books, I just don't feel a connection to the characters as you're not seeing it from their point of view. I did like Violet's character though, I thought she was well written and was probably the highlight of the book.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will be reading anymore of the books in this series and it hasn't made me want to read the first two books either. Maybe if I had read the previous books I would've felt more of a connection to the story.

I was looking forward to read Violet’s story after reading Sapphire and Black.
I loved Violet’s character development throughout this book. Anton and Violet had an instant chemistry that neither of them could resist.
The storyline was kind of predictable and not as dark as expected for being labeled as a dark romance. It also felt a bit rushed towards the end. But with author’s compelling writing, it was still interesting and more than enjoyable read!

Violet is the third in a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone, as the author provides enough background information. I have now read all three of the first three books in this series and I liked this one the least, but it still was a good read that held my interest. The story revolves around Violet, the youngest of the three Black siblings. She winds up getting involved with the Russian mob (the "Bratva") through a rather predictable connection. The first two books were subtitled as a "romantic heist" and a "romantic revenge thriller", while Violet's subtitle is "A Dark Mafia Romance." Based on my reaction to this one, I may not read any further in the series, as it seems the later books continue the emphasis on the Russian mafia.

Thank you to Book Sirens for a free ebook copy in return for my honest review.

4 1/2 Riveting Stars!

Well written mafia romance that had something above and beyond others in this genre.
Descriptive, with smooth character development as the storyline was easy to follow and intriguing.
Violet’s emotions and character showed through with her beautiful talent in song and composition as well as her deep attachment to her siblings and even her beloved guitar. All little details that enhanced and brought an added depth to her personality.
Intense, passionate scenes with Anton that held a desperation that was further enhanced by their forbidden love.
A captivating read.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "VIOLET" (COLOR OF CRIME SERIES) This was such an interesting, dark intense drama, with suspense, intrigue, kidnapping, danger, mystery twists that keep you turning page after page.
Violet Black is a singer songwriter she lives with her roommate Mischa not in a great part of town she's a victim of theft, first money was stolen then her guitar that's she taught herself to play when she was 7yrs old found it in her mother's closet so she's heartbroken.
Singing on stage that night at in the Russian bar called Pravada she sees a table full of men, her boss says the Victor Turgenev head of the Mafia wants to talk to her someone you don't say no.
Violets goes over to talk she makes eye contact with his second Anton she answers a few questions and tells Victor what happened with the stolen money and guitar that might her jar was filled with money when the men left.
Anton waited outside for Violet when she finished wanted to talk she told him her older brother was Bryan Black used to be a Detective with the London Police she was part of his family.
Violet's life takes a turn after meeting Anton he kidnapps her and the more time they spend together their chemistry is off the charts hot so much happens in this book it's a story you don't want to miss reading.
I definitely recommend to get this amazing book so well worth the read and the characters were so interesting you couldn't put this book down until finished reading I read it backwards this is the 3rd book in the series I'm going to read Sapphire next book one. AWESOME AWESOME READ!!!!

This is the second book that I have read by Sophie Lark and once again she failed to disappoint. Violet is a struggling musician in London, she works performs at a club and at the subway station. It is at this club where she will meet the men who will change her life. One of the men she meets is Anton and she is immediately attracted to him. Their lives will intersect and Violet will learn that she is not who she thinks she is. This story will hook you from the beginning and take hold til the end. This story has drama, hot scenes, and some action thrown in. I received an authors copy and I have left an honest review.
