Slow Burn

Rate this book
And the winner is...Dana Johnson? "What?" Turns out Dana's friend secretly entered her in the contest to win a dinner date with NASCAR driver Braden James. Burned by her former fiance, Dana isn't exactly eager to be swept off her feet by someone who'll disappear after dessert. She tells Braden he's off the hook, but he says they're "on." His sponsor--a matchmaking Web site--is counting on him. And he's counting on "her" to swoon on cue for the cameras. Not too difficult--Braden is much more than just a gorgeous hotshot. A foster-care kid who's seen his share of hard knocks, he's driven head-on through heartache and triumph. But when the last flashbulb pops, will their slow burn ignite into a very real romance?

With over a million books in print, Pamela Britton likes to call herself the best known author nobody’s ever heard of. Of course, that’s begun to change thanks to a certain licensing agreement with that little racing organization known as NASCAR.

Nowadays it’s not unusual to hear her books being discussed by the likes of Jay Leno, Keith Olbermann, or Stephen Colbert. Flip open a magazine and you might read about her, too, in Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, or Southwest Airlines’ Spirit Magazine. Channel surf and you might see her on CNN, ESPN, ABC or NBC.

But before the glitz and glamour of NASCAR, Pamela wrote books that were frequently voted the best of the best by The Detroit Free Press, Barnes & Noble (two years in a row) and RT BOOKclub Magazine. She’s won numerous writing awards, including the National Reader’s Choice Award, and a nomination for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart and the Holt Medallion.

When not following the race circuit, Pamela writes full-time from her ranch in Northern California where she lives with her husband, daughter and, at last count, twenty-one four-legged friends.

If you'd like to chat with Pamela you can find her on her myspace where she loves to hangout with her readers.

4 stars – Contemporary/Sports Romance

Let me say up front that I’m by no means a NASCAR fan and that I prefer my romance to be at the very least PG-13, and of course usually the steamier the better. But, I do enjoy a good sports romance and love hunky athlete heroes, sexy race car driving studs included, so I thought I’d give this a try. I was worried when I heard that the books in Britton’s NASCAR series are all very PG clean, and this definitely is (there’s zero sex...just implied). So consider me pleasantly surprised to say that I enjoyed this nice, sweet contemporary sports romance with a too good to be true, to die for beta hero.

Dana Johnson just ended an abusive relationship and the last thing she wants is to get involved with a man, but when fate, in the form of a NASCAR matchmaking ‘win a date with a driver’ contest, sets her up with hotshot racing hunk Braden James, can she take a chance again and open her heart?

Braden is such an incredibly perfect, sweet, funny, flirtatious, caring, romantic, and protective hero, and his tentative, ‘sweep her off her feet’ courtship of Dana is heartwarming. Dana severely tried my patience, and I had to remind myself over and over again to be sympathetic because of her past hurt and heartbreak ‘cause girlfriend really annoyed me at times. That’s the main reason I lowered my rating from 5 to 4 stars, okay, and because of the PG lack of any romantic details. Still, it’s a charming and enjoyable contemporary sports romance with a yummy sweet beta hero, and I imagine that you NASCAR fans would probably love it even more.

Slow burn romance with the steamy action taking place off-page.

The blurb LIED!!
Turns out Dana's friend secretly entered her in the contest to win a dinner date with NASCAR driver Braden James.

How it really happened:
But she had entered the contest. Well, technically Alysa had entered for her, secretly filling out the form as a surprise. But Dana had eventually put her signature on it, and let Alysa drop it in the box.

So it wasn't really a surprise. Shocking that Dana actually won, yes, but not a complete and utter surprise like the blurb had indicated. Small thing, I know, but that was the appeal for me.

Still an enjoyable read, though I couldn't stand Alysa.

I need more NASCAR romance but with smexy times on page.

This is my favourite in Pamela Britton's NASCAR series.

Dana has just escaped from an abusive relationship and the last thing she needs is another man in her life. But when she won the contest and won a date with NASCAR driver Braden, she couldn't resist him.

Braden is incredibly gentle and patient and willing to wait for Dana to come to terms with her problems. But he is protective as well, and tries to help her.

I like both of them. They are great together. I was cheering for Dana all the time, she really wasn't treated fair. Her fiancée abused her and when she tried to go away from him, he first followed her, and then got her fired, destroyed her things. He really deserved what happened to him.

My only problem with the book is Dana's friend Alysa. I didn't like her from the start, but later on I hated her and it bothered me that Dana forgave her.

4.5 stars.

Great plot, but fell flat for me.

It had some great moments and Braden was amazing. I just had a hard time getting into it because Dana kept changing her mind (I can't do this, I'm in, I can't do this, I'm in, repeat). Even though this is probably more realistic, it got annoying very fast.

I couldn’t like the heroine. Her thinking and actions were idiotic. However, the story about the abusive ex-fiance was good.

STORY BRIEF:
Dana is a CPA whose fiancé Stewart beat her twice, leaving bruises. She broke off the engagement and went to a NASCAR race for the weekend with a girlfriend. A drawing was held and Dana won – to have a date with Braden, a famous NASCAR driver. The date is scheduled for two months later, but Braden likes the beautiful Dana and doesn’t want to wait. He asks her to go out that evening for dinner. She refuses. They have other interactions before the official date. Most of the story is about their wanting each other but her not letting it happen. A secondary story involves the actions of her ex-fiance Stewart.

REVIEWER’S OPINION (WITH SOME SPOILERS):
I had major problems with Dana, the heroine – wimpy, irrational, inconsiderate. Braden was good, kind and wanted to spend time with her. She wouldn’t go on a date with him for reasons I still don’t understand. She told herself it was because she didn’t want him asking about her bruises, which he already knew about. She later tells him that they will never have a relationship “not now. Not ever.” She leaves the weekend events early to get away from him. A week or so later she sees him for publicity pictures. He acts distant because of the way she left him. She can’t understand why because she was looking forward to seeing him. Later when he is in the middle of a race. She tells him she is leaving him. This hurt his performance during the last half of the race. After that, they both wanted to be with each other, but she said no, they must spend time apart. I can’t imagine any “rational” reason why she said this. They needed to get to know each other - at least a little bit. All these conflicts throughout the story were based on her insecurities and the changing of her mind and her idiotic decisions. I can’t have any sympathy or be interested in reading about someone like her. It’s possible to have a good story about someone foolish and stupid. But that is not the case here. I want stories with interesting characters, events and plot. This didn’t have any of that. There was potential. The best parts of the story were the events happening with Stewart, the abuser.

This was the first NASCAR book I've read and I thought it was fabulous. The book was up to date with the current rules and Series titles, yet had it's own distinct feel to it.

After calling off her wedding to her abusive boyfriend, Stewart, Dana Johnson and her coworker, Alysa Anderson, go to the Las Vegas race. There Alysa enters them both into "Win a date with Braden James" contest.

Braden James spotted Dana in the crowd even before she won. When he meets her behind the stage he is surprised by the way she doesn't go all "crazy fan like" on him.

It doesn't take Braden long to realize Dana is different. He can also tell by the bruises the secret she isn't telling anybody. Desperate to help her, Dana continues to run away from the truth and him.

Adding to her problems is her ex fiancee threats if she were to go public with her story against him. Use to both good and bad press, Braden isn't afraid to get in the middle of Stewart attacking Dana. Unfortunately this puts the spotlight on the three of them.

Even though Dana can tell Braden is different and has confessed his feelings for her, she still needs time to find herself and come to terms with her new life if she were to be with Braden.

But first, she has to take care of Stewart. In the meantime, Braden keeps up his hopes by his crew and PR Elizabeth, the only people who are truly his family.

After straightening out her thoughts, Braden and Dana will forever be in victory lane.

Slow Burn by Pamela Britton
NASCAR Series Book 7
Dana Johnson just broke it off with her fiance, right before the wedding. When her co-worker asks her to go with her to Vegas to for a NASCAR race it seemed a good thing to do. Get out of town, away from all the questions and away from her psycho ex. Dana knows nothing about NASCAR and only entered a contest to win a date with some driver because Alysa pushed her to try it. She figured she might get lucky and win one of the other prizes. No such luck….she goes and wins the big one.

Braden James notices the exotic beauty in the audience right away and her sadness. He’s actually glad she ends up winning a date with him, until he finds out she is probably the only woman around who wishes she hadn’t won. Braden knows a damsel in distress when he sees one though and Dana is definitely that. Now if only he can convince her she needs him.

This is the last book in this series and the author did so well bringing all the characters to life that it’s sad to see it end. Dana is fighting her fear and lack of trust in men and Braden has lived life in foster homes and recognizes her fears. Add a rather jealous friend, a nutso ex and life in the pits and you have another exciting story.

This is the seventh book in the NASCAR series written by Pamela Britton and features Dana Johnson and Braden James. Braden's sponsor, My-Lovematch.com, is promoting a contest with a date with Braden being the prize. Dana has recently ended her engagement because her fiance was abusing her. Lots of drama and then, knock me over with a feather, Dana wins the contest.

Braden sees the beautiful Dana in the audience and is happy when she wins. Dana, suffering some sort of PTSD from her ex, decides she doesn't want to go out with him now. The sponsor insists and to Dana's surprise she begins to fall for Braden. But now Alysa, who entered Dana into the contest is jealous. There's also a secondary storyline involving her ex-fiance.

I liked the idea for this story but found most of the characters obnoxious. I really liked Braden and he's the reason I stuck with the story. It was another fast, easy read for a challenge that needed an auto racing tag.

The fourth book I read of this series (yes, I didn't read them in any order but each book can stand alone so it's more than fine!) and the pattern / structure of story is rather obvious. I guess that could be the attraction of these novels especially if they are the kind of comfort / guilty pleasure reads you enjoy. I just find myself constantly expecting the next part to happen so felt a bit bored...

In this particular story, however, I do like the theme presented (ie. the heroine's problem) and I find myself hoping that if any of my friends are in that situation, they'd ask for help and I could somehow help. It's a very serious issue in today's society. I do, most especially, enjoy the way the heroine kick that problem off; what a set down! Unfortunately, am not very convinced of the hero & his character. He seems too perfect in my eyes. Nevertheless, it's a romance novel so I'll take tall, dark, & handsome 😜

Trusting people especially men is hard for Dana Johnson. Why? Because her ex-fiance was beating her up. So in an attempt to escape Stewart her ex-fiance, she goes with her friend Alysa to a race. Featuring the great Braden James, world famous race car driver. Braden and Dana click at their first sight. Things spiral out of control for Dana when Stewart finds her at her hotel and Braden intervenes when Stewart is about to strike her. Dana gets too scared and runs leaving her fake friend Alysa to play with Braden and his people after an interview about her, Braden, and Stewart. But Dana is pulled back into Braden's life. How will Dana deal with her ex-fiance since he is coming for her? Will Braden save her from her ex-fiance? Will Braden and Dana live happily ever after?

This book was awful. Pamela Britton, how do you manage such a subtle turn of phrase? "Sex. That’s what they were going to have." This book is a formulaic NASCAR romance...and every bit as good as that sounds. The plot was ridiculous, especially the ending (SPOILER ALERT!) where Dana sticks it to her abusive ex-boyfriend by pulling incriminating evidence out of her bum. There have got to be better examples of the romance genre out there, so go read those and don't waste your time on this one.

Not my favorite of Britton's NASCAR series. The heroine in this book (Dana) got on my nerves BIG TIME. She was so wishy washy at times that it drove me INSANE! But, I tried to remember what she went through in her past and it helped that Braden was a super A+ hero. Such a patient man! So in the end, I liked the book, it's a sweet story, just not one that wow'd me or anything.

I practically read this in one day. I loved the story, the characters and how slowly this romance came together. This was not only a romance, but a story about how to overcome things that are extremely hard to deal with and how you can come out on the other side happier than you ever thought you could be.

A cute little romance that tries to be fraught with meaning. The heroine, the hero, and his friend are all abuse survivors, and he's become a champion of abused people since fame and fortune smiled upon him. I'm sure this would have been more exciting if I were a race fan, but it was nice to read along and be able to relate to the heroine, who had no idea about NASCAR.

Meh. Really didn't like the cliche of this book, typical abused woman trying to move on and finds insta love. Overdone. Otherwise, it was a good enough story.

The writing style didn't engage me and I found the dialogue to be quite stilted at times. I won't be continuing with this series.
