This book is about so many things. First days in school, first crush, first kid on the bus, but never the first in class. This book is a look at the life of a Malaysian studying across the causeway in Singapore. This book is about waking up stupid early to go to school.
boey is a malaysian animator/artist/author and a TED award recipient best known for his art on foam cups. he has written 5 books, and they are pretty good, he thinks.
Another book from Boey that unlocks my childhood memories as well. This one really made me laugh out loud for real. Especially the story titled "Bigger isn't always better". Mr. Boey, did you really received a box of tamarinds as a gift when they told you to choose one box? I'm sorry but I did laugh out loud because of this one. I want to know what's your reaction after opening that box, haha.
The other story that really reminds me of my childhood in school is about curry chicken rice. I think every school (in Malaysia and maybe, Singapore too) circa 1990s to early 2000s served curry chicken rice. Mine was too, and it simply was my most favorite dish at school canteen that time. One plate cost RM1 and to get one was like a war because everybody was pushing around the stall to get one plate of those delicious curry chicken rice. There's always two or three people serving that stall and I remembered fondly of this one old uncle who's always so nice to me (giving me extra chicken and extra curry whenever I bought one plate from him). I never found curry chicken rice that delicious again after I left school and just like you Mr. Boey, I would love to go back in time and have one more plate of that delicious curry chicken rice.
I love this book as much as the others before this one. Hope to read more from you in future!
Finally! I had read this way before the book's ISBN was added to Goodreads. Now I can write my review.
I was in joy when I first saw it in Popular and instantly grab it to complete my collection. These series have a core memory in me, I read them in my high school year and I remember laughing so hard in class with my friends because the book is so funny.
Of course, Boey will write and tell us the story about his childhood and I obviously can relate to it as the setting of the story was mainly in Johor and Singapore. The system of the school is also the same lah with my school because we are Asian obviously 🤣
In this continuation book, I could tell how Boey missed his school day and friends, and there is one story that gave me a goosebump because I think this is his first time telling us the reader about his trauma. It was shocking but I felt that some kids also have countered that kind of harassment.
The humor in this book does not less but I think there are more nostalgic feelings. My eyes were bawling while reading a certain story in this book. How happy we were when we were a kid.
A light read about the author's elementary school days. Some I couldn't relate much, maybe because of the culture where he's from. But some are very quite similar to my school days growing up. Those were especially enjoyable to read.
Ahhh, good old days when life wasn't as stressful.
Or maybe our definition of stress has differed. But at that time, and this time, some days can be unnerving.
Anyway, it was a good reminiscing. I enjoyed this.
Book 7 is all about primary school life. It felt like looking back at my own school time memories. Never a dull moment with Boey’s When I Was a Kid series! Your mom is wrong about this book. It is good. For me at least!
Got me thinking about when im an adult, im gonna write a childhood stories. Not gonna lie, and im curious if im about to remember my childhood memorieds when im an adult and this books remind me of school and Kids.
I will rate the book 4.8 stars. This book is comfort read. This book remind me back when I’m in primary school, its very nostalgic read. Boey the things he do as a kid its very funny and it does bring back a lot of memories when I’m still in primary school. What a good read.
