McTiernay Brothers #3

Desiring the Highlander

Rate this book
Seven McTiernay brothers, each a highlander born to protect Scotland and her people, warriors known for their quick wits and quicker broadswords. The third brother, Cole, stared death in the face when he was only a boy...

Now Cole McTiernay is a man. And though he resists them in every way, he has responsibilities. The wild northern Highlands need a laird who can guide them to peace. Cole has the army strong enough to accomplish this task. What he doesn't have is the desire—to be a leader among men...

And so he is sent off on a fool's errand: a mission to retrieve something from the very Englishmen Cole has spent his life hating. When he finds that the 'something' is a wild hellion, he balks, determined to make the return to Scotland as hard on her as it was for him to set foot on English soil. But though English herself, Ellenor intrigues him with her fierce spirit, and Cole's heart, deeply locked away for so long, may be vulnerable at last...

In need of a creative outlet, I began writing novels after my second child was born. A voracious reader of romance books and a constant dreamer of romantic plots, I was encouraged to put my ideas to paper. I soon found out I loved it...all of it!

I am a member of the Romance Writers of America and of the Georgia Romance Writers.

In addition to writing historical romance novels, I also build large HO model trains, love to do huge cross-stitching pieces, relax by boating, and decorate everything I can during the Christmas season.

Besides romance I am a heavy science fiction reader and try to read at least two books a month—one science fiction and the other romance even when I am writing. I guess I just secretly desire to live in another place in time!

This book had sooooo much potential : strong, brooding, emotionally unavailable Highlander; smart, feisty, go-getter heroine, too bad it’s bogged down in mind numbing narration and filler which totally kills the story :-/

Marketed as a love/hate theme, this doesn't last long and suddenly the h/h, Cole and Ellenor, become friends and then some. That’s disappointing because the chase/build-up is dead in the water fast. Cole says he can’t have anything to do with Elle for various reasons from his past but he doesn’t really do anything to stay away and she’s very available to him. She’s also too clingy from the start –not quite the love/hate described on the back blurb. So plodding along through the book I guess you could excuse that part as the love story develops, unfortunately though there’s so much additional crap that you forget where this love story actually is because the author has taken to focusing on him maybe becoming laird, his enemies, rebuilding the new clan castle blah blah blah. Nobody cares, where’s the story about the relationship between the two people????

Another big problem is the alpha hero who’s unsure of himself to the point where it’s the heroine who has to take charge and tell him that he’s the man for the job – a kind of “Little Engine that Could” encouragement. I like my heroes who know what they want and go and get it without pussy-footing around in uncertainty. It takes away from their “alphaness”. That’s a personal preference of course and many readers may enjoy a heroine who’s stronger than the hero but not me. He’s not a beta or anything but he’s not the kind of alpha he’s described as being.

There are too many pages of dense narration which reminded me of Monica McCarty’s novels. If you like that kind of writing you’ll likely enjoy this book. I don’t like books that tell a story instead of showing it to you. They’re arduous to read and you suddenly find yourself skimming paragraphs to get to the end instead of enjoying the story. The last 100 of pages or so of this book –that could’ve been edited out entirely-- I could barely skim read because it was so boring. There was the stereotypical bit of trouble near the end once the h/h got together which is so annoying because you expect it seeing as the author has nothing else to do with the characters. It’s not a book that’s well put together. It felt like the author didn’t know how to end it so it wavered and then suddenly there’s the syrupy epilogue, bang we’re done.

If tight book binding irritates you then there’s another reason not to pick up this book. The writing is too close to the spine that you really have to crack that baby open to read what’s in the middle. At 400+ pages that’s a headache because you just want to rip it in sections so you can actually read with some comfort being that the type is already quite small. Don’t publishers think of these things????!

I love Highlander novels but it’s one genre that is virtually impossible to find a decently written story apart from say Julie Garwood. Michele Sinclair is just another to cross off the list if her other books are like this one.

A Cosy 3.5 STARS

This was one of my favourite books several years ago, and it still remains an enjoyable read and re-read. Are there clichés in this? Yes, but honestly when it comes to this book and author, I don’t mind it at all. Sombre and self-contained highlander Cole McTiernay is sent on what he deems a fool’s errand, to retrieve something from an English Lord, an unpalatable task for him since he has spent many years despising all Englishman, but he knows his duty so off he goes. When he reaches his goal, he is in for a very unexpected surprise - English woman and spitfire Ellenor, their journey to the highlands promises to be an interesting one. Ellenor unexpectedly finds herself trusting Cole, when she has reason to be wary of all men, and Cole finds that Ellenor unlike others is not scared of his icy demeaner, and he finds himself amused by her actions and words rather than furious.

Cole tries to resist the pull he has to Ellenor, yet it does no good, she worms her way underneath his skin, but there is someone intent on ensuring Cole doesn’t get any type of HEA, and Ellenor is in the crosshairs.

The love/hate component of Cole and Ellenor’s relationship really doesn’t last long at all, so don’t expect it to be a key competent of the tale, I thought it would be due to the blurb when I first picked this up years ago. In this re-read I found myself, again, enjoying the banter between the two main characters, they work well together.

This may be part of a series, and Cole does pop up in the books that come prior to this, but each book can easily be read as a standalone (I’ve only read and re-read the first 3 books so far).

So I started this series some time ago and decided to pick up on book three. I do love Michele Sinclair as an author and her highland historical romances. "Desiring the Highlander" was good but not as good as the other two in the series. The main characters were well suited and laughable at times.

The narration by Anne Flosnik was superb as usual. I do love her as a narrator of historical romances.

This is my first Michele Sinclair book and it is definitely not going to be my last. And I’m sorry it’s my first book of hers. This is the third in her series and I know I missed a couple of great stories in not reading the first two yet. I’m a huge fan of Scottish historicals, and Ms. Sinclair has just become a favorite new author of mine with her alpha-but-sensitive heroes, intelligent and level-headed heroines, and romance to die for.

Cole McTiernay has spent years hating everything English, keeping a vow to avenge his best friend’s death at their hands. He keeps all emotion locked inside, letting only his hatred out when need be. Talked into doing a favor for his sister-in-law, Cole rides into England to pick up something important to her. What he ends up with is a spitfire of a woman, and though she is English, she intrigues him like no other woman ever has.

Feigning madness to keep all prospective husbands at bay, Ellenor has her escape from her brother-in-law planned out, but everything is ruined when she’s handed over to a trio of Scotsmen to deliver her to an unknown destination. She’s left one frightening situation for another, but as she gets to know their leader, a man who keeps the world on the outside just as she does, she is amazed to find that his touch makes her feel safe.

I absolutely loved this couple. They have their own fears and ways of dealing with the lot life has handed them. But when they come together and recognize this in one another, they begin a tremulous but beautiful relationship that grows into a love of a lifetime. Of course, it’s not quite that easy for them.

Cole is on the brink of being named laird of a ragtag clan that needs leadership, but it is his inability to connect with people that is holding his selection back. Elle still fears a man’s touch after a horrifying night that leaves her father dead. As their love grows, they also help each other see that what they need to move on in life is inside them, just waiting to be let free to guide them along. They each have what the other needs to move past their fears, and this is done so extremely well by Ms. Sinclair.

It is Cole who has to make the decision to grab this new life that’s his for the taking. Elle has done all she can to prove to him what they have together will work if he’ll only give it a chance. It’s not until Ellenor’s life is in danger that he knows he must take hold of his own destiny with this incredible woman who only wants to love him.

I like the fact that there are seven books planned in this series, one for each McTiernay brother. For a reader who loves to read about brothers and Scottish historicals, I believe I”ve hit a gold mine. I’m looking forward to every single one of them.

I also loved this book but must admit that I did love To Wed A Highlander just a small bit better.
Michele Sinclair really knows how to write a good story but what is even better are her characters. She also has a fantastic way of describing things in her book's.
The heat level in this book was not as hot as in TWAH was but it was still there as well as the love that I could fell between the H&H.
I was all set to continue on with this series but found out the book Michele just released The Christmas Knight is not part of this series. This series has 4 more brothers to explore and it does say at Michele's web site that she has plans to write them. I for one certainly hope so. If they were already written I would just continue reading until they were all read. That being said, I do plan to read The Christmas Knight in the very near future and any other book she writes.

I love the first 3/4 of the book (I don't like the last part).
Why?
The beginning was superb. The banters between the Hero and heroine was so funny and enjoyable.
I really enjoyed it.
Brooding male meets witty and beautiful female. How enticing.
Furthermore, they both came with their own baggages. Angsty. Slow burn romance.
However, after they got married, things kind of dwindled down.
There was no more angst between them. It's all 'settled'.
What was left was the story about whether the Hero would overcome ruling his new land or not. It was boring. Hence 3 stars.

Desiring the Highlander tells a historical romance story that has already been told but with characters that gives it this special touch. It's the first time I like the female character more than the male one. Ellenor was especially strong and determined, she was also very smart and I liked that she knew what she wanted and went to get it. There was no hesitation and no unnecessary drama.
A bit of a disappointment with the end as I felt there was a scene missing before the epilogue. I really wished this was written. Anyways, it was a good historical romance and I recommend for those who like a light read in that genre.

As a boy, Cole and his best friend snuck out against orders to join a battle against the English. Instead, they were captured, and, when the sadistic English officer saw that Cole was unafraid of death, instead he forced Cole to watch as his best friend was tortured and killed.

Since then, Cole has been famous for his icy cold, unfeeling demeanor, and for his hatred of all things English. With one unfortunate exception: His brother Connor married an Englishwoman, and Cole, in his cold, unfeeling way, kinda likes her. So when she asks him to cross the English border and retrieve something important from her brother, he takes a couple friends and goes.

The something important turns out to be a filthy, stinky, raving madwoman named Ellenor, who is dragged out shrieking and clawing and tossed at his feet. She nearly unmans Donald, one of Cole’s companions, when the man grabs her, but Cole sees something in her eyes and knows she’s just pretending to be crazy. Still he takes the precaution of tying her up before he sets her on his horse.

Ellenor wants nothing to do with men, and can hardly stand to be close to them, so when her greedy sister and brother-in-law (Laurel's brother) took her in so they could marry her off to the highest bidder, the best way to fend off unwanted attention was to stink and act crazy.

She senses somehow that she can trust Cole, so the instant they’re away from England she stops pretending. Which is not to say she’s cooperating. No indeed. Since Cole won’t tell her where they’re going (the point of his refusal eludes me), she fears that she’s only being dragged off to another relation who will try to force her to marry for money, so she intends to escape.

You guessed it—an attraction develops between them, though Cole tries to resist.

There’s a secondary story that adds a bit of danger to the mix, which keeps this from being a bit too "romance-only" for me. I’ll give it three and a half.

First of all I have to say that Michele Sinclair is a new must-buy for me. Her stories are great and all her characters win your heart in time ... even if you don't like them in the beginning, as it was with this story.
I had real troubles with Ellenor at the beginning, and I don't really know why. I could understand her behaviour and her reasons for that was sound. Nevertheless she annoyed me at the beginning.
Contrary to Cole. he was a great hero.
I loved how their relationship turned and especially the wedding scene was unbelievable romantic.
the one thing I not really appreciate in this book is the ending. there is an epilogue which gives us a good ending but the end of the last chapter was a bit unsatisfying.
we saw a good deal of Laurel and Conor in this book again, and although I appreciate it. I missed Colin and Makenna. these two were my favorites till now and I don't think another brother will ever win the first place from Colin.

All in all, this was a great book and I recommend this for everyone who loves Highlander stories. but you should read them in order so that you can appreciate all the characters.

3.5 stars. I liked this one, but not as much as the other two. I thought Elle and Cole were both well-drawn and believable. I enjoyed the secondary characters, too. But a few things bothered me. First, there was a lot of internalizing. Next there was a lot of analysis of emotions with what I perceived to be modern verbiage. "Cole internalizes his emotions" just doesn't sound like something a 14th century woman would say. I was disappointed that Colin was barely mentioned. And that he and hiswife didn't appear for the wedding.

And last, this book contained my latest pet peeve. A kidnapping for no reason. The conflict could have been handled another way, but I just knew a kidnapping was coming and I awaited it with dread. Authors, please stop with the "kidnapping as climax" endings. I beg of you!

So overall I liked this one, but there were a Few things that bothered me.

Cole McTiernay has vowed revenge against the English and unwilling to let go of the past either much to his family's dismay.Years later Cole is very much cut off from his emotions or at least he thinks so but nothing could be further from the truth. Ellenor Howell feigns madness to prevent her marriage against her will. Ellenor's life and choices are taken out of her hands by Cole. Ellenor realizes that she's only safe in Cole's arms and no other. Will Cole's heart thaw? How will Ellenor help? Your answers await you in Desiring the Highlander.

I'm really enjoying this series with it's strong heroes and heroines. The characters are bold, honest, real, and down to earth. The story is compelling and fascinating. I look forward to my next adventure in this series.

This historical romance was just so-so. The beginning and end had some exciting action but the rest moved slow with a stubborn hero and characters ruminating about everything. I skimmed a lot. Highlander Cole is sent by his sister-in-law to pickup Ellenor in the England, a country he hates.

There was so much head jumping that I couldn't follow the story. The editing style made this hard for me to follow and there was heavy bouts of insta-lust that I just didn't find appealing.

Out of the first three books this is my absolute favorite. I did enjoy the bantering or the first book but this one is a must.

Although I always tend to find these books about falling in love so quickly very blah. I got over it. The time spent on creating the chemistry and the romance was absolutely delightful. You’ll love both of these characters.

I, however, am a little disappointed that there isn’t more of an action happening that could hurt each other, it’s more just their own day to day life and then at the end there is an event that could destroy one of their lives. I loved how this one ended, I just wish there was more!

Cole and Ellenor's Story

This is Cole & Ellenor's story. Both have incidents in their past that affect their attitudes. Cole is emotionally closed off, while Ellenor is frightened of men. They spar a bit at first but Ellenor quickly realized that Cole will not hurt her. The story is well written, Ellenor is not clingy but needs Cole around to feel safe, & Cole continues the story in book 3 of becoming the Laird for a clan in trouble so the story switches between the relationship & the fight to be Laird as the first two books did.

Im disappointed that Cole never confess about Robert to Ellenor. Aye she over heard him when Cole spoke of Rob in his dream. I thought he would feel heavyness of his lifted if he would talk to Elle but instead it was Ellenor, herself lift his soul. I don't know how I feel about it. If only he told her then, She'll understand her just like Cole did when Ellenor confessed.

But No, because He's totally a Man!

I knew Dugan killed Leith but I'd like to know more about it...

Will there be a Dugan novel coming soon?? Even though He's not a McTinernay? 🤞

Cole ❤️ Ellenor

Third part of McTiernay Brothers series is a very long and quite boring story.
Cole is interesting character and Ellenor is very fine lady but their story doesn't bring anything new.
It is told in almost real time pace but what could have happened in Middle Ages day by day... not much...
Their romantic relationship is also described in a little sketchy manner.

The perfect couple......

This storyline had me in tears from the first chapter, then I was laughing in the next chapter, what an emotional roller coaster! I loved it, Cole and Elle make the perfect couple as their backgrounds are the same. Kept my interest and I am reading the next book in this series.

To be honest i probably wouldn't have read this book if my grandmother hadn't given it to me. I read this thinking it was going to be boring but as i kept reading it began to interest me. The writing was surprisingly funny and spicy at times. Nonnie you have impeccable taste in cheap dollar store books.

Gotta love a Highlander!

I totally love Highlander romances! Cole and Ellenore have similar past tragedies and the resultant guilt-driven angst; they are a good match. Secondary characters are also engaging, and although the climactic battle is a bit trite, the surprise ending is charming.
