Independent Reading Inside the Box

Rate this book
A classroom thriving on independent reading is inspiring; with students strewn around the room, open books in hand, and a quiet hush filling the room. This innovative book shows teachers how the Reading 8 Box can help add value, authenticity, and accountability to independent reading programs and keep the focus on student reading. This book offers teachers a useful overview of the Reading 8-Box and its components. From a reproducible blank template to numerous student samples of the Reading 8-Box in action, the book illustrates how students can use a single page to strengthen and monitor their comprehension, language and thinking skills. It offers a range of graphic organizers and open-response opportunities that help deepen student thinking and response.

I really liked this book and am buying it for my collection. It's the super structure that it sets up that is most appealing to me. I will know how to teach the structures, kids will know what is expected and we can get down to the business of reading....and falling in love with nonfiction.

An excellent structure for independent study. Students quickly learn the format and enjoy the "bite size" format. As an OT it is easy learn and to assist students. Adaptable to varied reading levels.

This book is a great resource for teachers to use to monitor independent reading. It helps teachers assess student's reading strategies and vocabulary development. I love that the author provided lots of samples to copy and use during my reading block. Differentiation in reading is much simpler with the help of this book.
