Do svoje trideset trece napisace ukupno oko stotinu pesama, da bi zatim do smrti stampao jos samo dvadeset.

Dr. Lazar Kostić (Kovilj, 12 February 1841 - Vienna, 9 December 1909) was a writer, essayist, philosopher, politician. Graduated Law at the University of Budapest in 1864, where he also received his doctorate two years later. A prominent member of the United Serbian Youth and member of Miletic's Serbian National Liberal Party, entered in the political life of Serbs in Vojvodina very early. The Prophet of the People's Church in the Hungarian Parliament (1873). At the Berlin congress in 1878. was the private secretary of Jovan Ristic, and 1880th Secretary of the Serbian legation in St. Petersburg. From 1880. to 1891., the citizen of the two Serbian countries, Serbia and Montenegro. By marriage with a rich woman Julijanom - Julčom Palanački in September, the 1895th became a citizen of Sombor, and it is there he will spend the rest of his life. In Sombor he made his hallucinatory night journal, Diary of dreams, and sung the famous song of Serbian literature, the lamentous "Santa Maria della Salute".

The most prominent Serbian poet of high romanticism, Kostic published three books of poetry during his lifetime: Poems, 1873.1874. and 1909. As a tragedy and a comedy writer, he wrote two historical dramas, "Maksim Crnojević" (1866) and "Pera Segedinac" (1882), and two comedies, "Gordana" (1889) and "Occupation" (written in German 1878/79, published for the first time in 1977). He voiced his philosophical and aesthetic ideas in these discussions: "The basis of everything beautiful, with particular regard to the Serbian folk songs" (1880) and "Basic Principle" (1884). In his book "On Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj (dragon), his singing, thinking, writing, and his age (1902)", offered not only a lucid analysis of Dragon's singing, but also a vivid picture of the romantic era, developing earlier assumptions about poetry and philosophy intersect in a peculiar theory of artistic inspiration . Connoisseur of classical and modern languages, he translated Homer, Shakespeare, Bulwer, Heine, Kiš and Dernburg.

Ovo nije ocjena ovog konkretnog izdanja, već generalno pjesništva Laze Kostića.
Mogu da kažem da je on sigurno moj omiljeni pjesnik srpskog romantizma, kao i jedan od omiljenih pjesnika uopšte.
Još uvijek je dovoljno pristupačan, pitak, ponekad čak i duhovit i zabavan, nije hermetičan kao neki savremeni pjesnici, a istovremeno zalazi u neke modernije, dublje teme. Kombinacija misaone i duboko emotivne poezije.

Iz ništavila u slavu slava,
iz beznjenice u raj, u raj...
U raj, u raj, u njezin zagrljaj!


Kostićevi neologizmi; filozofija o pesničkoj inspiraciji kao nečemu što samo pesnik poznaje, što se nalazi između jave i sna; njegova kosmogonija...nemam reči.

Such a shame that English translation can't show all the beauty of his poems, because I would recommend them to everyone.
