Working for Last Chance Rescue, Cole Mathison has been to hell and back. But being responsible for the death of an innocent man is a hell like no other. Longing for redemption, Cole finds himself embroiled in the mysterious disappearance of Keeley Fairchild's young children. Rescuing the children is his mission—but falling in love with the widow of the man he inadvertently killed was never in the plans. When Keeley's life is threatened, Cole's demons must take a backseat to the most important mission of his life. He might never know the heaven of Keeley's arms, but he'll never survive the hell of failing to save her.
SPOILER ALERT! Stop here if you haven't read Run to Me
A bit of background Cole Mathison first appeared in Run to Me when he was discovered alive following a raid of evil David Rosemount's lab. He was Rosemount's personal killing machine and accidentally killed a man they'd kidnapped for ransom. That man was David Fairchild.
Fast forward Cole has healed and has resumed his role as an operative for Last Chance Rescue. It's his personal mission to secretly stand guard over Fairchild's widow, Keeley and 4-year old twin daughters but the one time he leaves to help out on another case, the twins are abducted. Cole self appoints himself onto the case to find the missing children.
What I enjoyed Just giving Cole a "happy ever after" was almost enough for me given what he'd overcome. The fact that I liked Keeley sweetened it a lot and the mystery surrounding the identity of the orchestrator of the abduction drove me nuts (I blew it). It was heart wrenching to experience Keeley's anguish as her children remained missing. I couldn't put this book down as I held my breath for most of the book, waiting for the outcome. The romance was bittersweet as a result but it worked.
The bottom line Be prepared to be tense, near tears, angry and overjoyed throughout this story. And, it's hard to put down because you just have to know how everything turns out. The tension was almost overwhelming.
This story about Cole has been a long time coming. Cole has been around for a couple of books now and has suffered more than most could ever imagine. I was ready to experience his story, and it was worth the wait. Knowing Cole from previous books allowed me to have a connection to the character before his story even began. His back story is heartbreaking but since it was intermingled with Shea and Ethan's story(Run To Me)we got to experience some of his trauma, without cutting into his romance/rescue story.
Even with all of the horrible experiences that the LCR operatives have survived both before and during their time with the organization, Reece has created a world that you can't help but want to be a part of. The characters all are people that I think would be fascinating and fulfilling to know in person. Though real life is never quite as scintilating as fiction, I believe my previous employment in law enforcement draws me to the friendships and sense of family that Reece has created within LCR.
That being said, I have been happy to see characters from previous books return to the stories and allow the reader to catch up on what has been happening in their lives. Too often characters are almost completely forgotten once their spotlight book is finished, but Reece gives her readers the the chance to "keep in touch" with operatives from previous books. I would LOVE to get a hold of some of the character development writing that Reece has most likely done when creating these people and their stories. Like my Twilight Books, My LCR books will stay on the book shelf to be re-read and enjoyed again and again.
Series note: Cole's backstory and connection to Keeley is related in book #3, Run to Me. That said, Reece provides sufficient detail for this book to be read as a standalone.
A good addition to the series although some of the events require a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, and the ending is very contrived.
Cole and Keeley's romance is the highlight of the book. They have tangible chemistry and their painful pasts make them the ideal match. The secret-keeping trope is handled well without too much angst (which is not easy to do), and the resolution is satisfying.
The suspense plot has a strong start and the villains are suitable smarmy. Unfortunately, it takes a turn for the worse toward the end as the mastermind is easy to guess and the motivations are contradictory and inconsistent with details presented earlier in the book. It's almost as if Reece lost track of her character.
Getting updates on previous couples in the series is an added bonus and the next book focuses on McKenna, who is a bit of an enigma. I look forward to her finding her HEA.
I liked this. I love Cole, he's hella-dreamy. Keeley was pretty good, especially since she did recognize her bad decisions ... unfortunately after she'd already acted on them.
My one complaint is that the solution to the crime was all happenstance. Really, LCR is pretty good at the extraction, but not so good at the investigation it seems. If it hadn't been for some incredible luck, the outcome wouldn't have been so rosy. I'd just like to see more effective investigation in future LCR stories.
Some characters seem to be coming to the fore with the intention of setting them up for books down the line. I support this effort. More LCR!
Loved seeing Ethan and Shea, but again, a huge plot point happened because of a rather unbelievable moment of operative incompetence. That's a short cut I think Reece is above as a writer.
But she always seems to give me a book that's hard to put down. And I'm thrilled the next installment is going to be out in a month.
For those who haven't read Reece yet, I think she's really making a well deserved splash in the suspense romance genre. I hope her audience continues to grow because she's definitely doing some entertaining work here.
It was holding a strong 4-star rating until an eye-rolling ending. It was just too convenient too hard to swallow. Still, I've enjoyed all her other books and look forward to the next in the series.
I have really developed a love for her stories and characters. I love the way she weaves her books together, I have gotten to know the LCR operatives a little bit at a time as I read each book, but I learned a lot about Cole Mathison over the three books leading up to this one. I was procrastinating reading this one, because I knew just how damaged he was, and was afraid of how much he would break my heart. Well, I finally gave in and picked this one up, and I’m so glad I did because it was everything I’ve come to expect from Reece, with her super sexy LCR operatives, and strong heroines, and flawless plotting and writing, it was amazing!!
This story takes us to a small town in South Carolina, where two little girls have been kidnapped . Their mother Keeley Fairchild has hired the LCR to help her find her daughters because the trail is cold, and there are no leads. A couple of operatives have already been working on the case along with an FBI agent, when Cole finds out about the situation. Cole feels obligated to this particular family because a while back he involuntarily killed Keeley’s husband. Keeley isn’t aware that Cole was the one who did this.
Keekey’s mother in law has come up in everyone’s mind as suspect number one as being behind the kidnapping of the two girls. Elizabeth Fairchild has never made any secret of her hatred for Keeley, and since she also seems to own the town, she’s able to influence the town as well. It appears that Elizabeth thrives on making Keeley’s life miserable. Keeley has gone through so much. Being the town outcast all her life due to her economic status, and then the death of her mother, who was everything to her. Then the death of her husband, and now the abduction of her twin girls, how much can one woman take?? Apparently someone is determined to see Keeley completely broken.
When Cole arrives on the scene, he certainly wasn’t expecting this olive skinned, dark haired exotic looking beauty Keeley Fairchild, or the way she unexpectedly makes him feel. After suffering the ultimate loss, and being captured and tortured , and pumped full of mind altering drugs for a year, Cole didn’t think he would ever be capable of feeling anything for anyone again. He thinks he’s so damaged that he has nothing to offer, and he couldn’t be farther from the truth. Cole is dedicated, loyal, compassionate, protective, giving, loving and OMG sexy as hell!! He never second guesses putting his life on the line for the people he cares about.
Christy Reece does an amazing job with her stories, with the plot, and suspense, and even the sexy scenes, I’m gonna tell you, that there’s a scene in this book that involved a mirror that made my toes curl, I could so vividly hear Cole’s rumbling husky voice in my head, and Cole was the only person that existed in my world at that moment. LOL!
I can’t give up any more without spoilers for other books or this one. Like I said, these books weave together so nicely, and I want you to enjoy this the same way I did. This is one series I recommend reading in order to enjoy it the way it’s meant to be. Just know this: If you love romantic suspense, Christy Reece does not disappoint!
In Second Chance, the fifth book of the LCR Series, we get to watch Cole Mathison, the protector, fall in love with Keeley Fairchild, the widow of the man he was forced to kill while captured and on mind-altering drugs. He is also working the case, or put himself on the case to help find Keeley's twin four year-old daughters, Hailey and Hannah.
Let's just say that if you were not already in love with Cole from No Chance, then you will fall completely in love with him in Second Chance. I truly enjoyed the build-up of emotion and sexual tension between Cole and Keeley and when they finally let go..watch out...talk about explosion...wow!! The fight within him to keep away from Keeley, knowing that when she finds out that he was the man who killed her husband, she wouldn't have wanted to find herself falling for him...but they just can't seem to keep their hands off of each other....and I loved every minute of it.
The villains weren't as horrible as Christy normally writes, but they were still evil and vindictive. I hate when the villain is right under their nose and the time is running out...always gets my heart racing. Christy has a way of writing that always makes me want to jump into the story and kick some ass.
The best part of the book, aside from the wonderful, emotional romance, was hanging out with Eden and Jordan and Shea and Ethan again...and I sure did enjoy Shea giving Keeley a small piece of her mind...hee hee...hormones!!
This was a great addition to the series and I can't wait to finish Last Chance so that I can re-read the "Sweet" Trilogy, which is the last three books in the Last Chance Rescue series.
I hope you have all got your LCR books on your e-reader and are following along with the series, or have pulled them off the shelves and re-read them again along with me. This is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED series!!
Cole and Keeley's book had me nail nibbling from page one. Reading the previous couple of books is definitely a must if you want the background on Cole...and Keeley, really. Keeley doesn't know it for a long time, but they have a connection before they ever meet, which is fully disclosed in the book prior to Second Chance.
Keeley's plight is one that gives parents nightmares from the moment they fill the role. Her two daughters are literally stolen right in front of her, taken to places unknown. I know it's one of my worst fears as a mom. I found myself sobbing my heart out during Keeley's moments of grieving, wanting to give her comfort and reassurances. But she didn't need me. No, she had tall, dark and hunky Cole to hold her. Can't begrudge that, especially since I was along for the ride. And what a sexy beast he is! From the cold-eyed, soulless killer in book four, he's done a complete 180 and now shows his soft and sexy side. One that includes a mirror and very few items of clothing!
This storyline reminded me a bit of , Cry No More, one of my all time favorite romantic suspense books. The premise is similar, and it tugs on the maternal heartstrings. This was a solid read, a great addition to the series. I'm hoping to get some McKenna in the next couple of books, as she's had quite a bit of facetime and buildup during the last few.
Perhaps 4.5 stars, and most likely my favorite of the series so far. Christy Reece does an excellent job with Romantic Suspense in this Last Chance Rescue series. The quality is consistently high, with a range between really good and excellent. If you like this genre, Reece's LCR is a good bet.
I recently found myself rereading this book and am so glad I did. We finally got Cole's story and what a story it was. I find myself wanting to be a better person after I ready one of Christy Reece's stories.
Keely and her kids moves in with Cole. Happily ever after. FYI, Keely's mother in-law hired someone to kidnap her own son to blame on Keely but he gets accidentally killed by Cole.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Fifth in the Last Chance Rescue romantic suspense series revolving around the damaged psyches of the agents of LCR. The couple focus is on Cole Mathison and Keeley Fairchild in Fairview, South Carolina, the town founded by Stephen Fairchild's great-grandfather.
My Take Hoo, boy. This one is full of strife, drama, and tension. Reece does an amazing job of keeping you guessing until the end...with a lot of surprises at the end.
Elizabeth is a piece of work. For all her power and money, she is so insecure and VICIOUS. She can't even tell the difference between her grandchildren. I do love that Cole despises her and manipulates her like crazy!
Reece makes me crazy...all these hints, all the possibilities, and I just knew who it had to be. And I couldn't be more wrong. The person setting this all up is so incredibly vicious… I'm in awe of Reece being able to create a character like this.
The Story There is someone in the town of Fairview who really, and I mean really, hates and despises Keeley Fairchild. This person will stop at nothing to destroy her including the kidnapping of Keeley's two daughters and then selling them on the black market.
It's been a month since the girls were kidnapped and Cole is furious that Noah didn't put him on the case immediately. He owes Keeley. He owes her big after what his actions cost her.
Determined to find Hannah and Hailey and discover who hates Keeley so much, Cole quarters the town, talking to as many people as he can find to learn what he can. What he learns is downright depressing. So few who believe in Keeley. Too many who adhere to Elizabeth's party line.
The Characters Last Chance Rescue is an organization that specializes in rescuing people upon whom everyone else has given up.
Keeley Fairchild is the widow of the philandering Stephen who was murdered after Keeley paid the ransom demanded by Donald Rosemount. Their two daughters are fraternal twins---sweet little, dark-haired Hannah and Hailey, the little blonde daredevil. Jenna Banks is Keeley's best friend; she was practically raised by Keeley's mama, Kathleen Daniels.
Elizabeth Fairchild is Stephen's insensitive, arrogant mother and the self-proclaimed queen bee of Fairview. It does help that she owns most of the businesses in town and has the police in her pocket. She uses this fact to force the townspeople to treat Keeley like a leper. She has despised Keeley from the moment of her existence and views her as staining the gleaming, precious name of Fairchild. Miranda Fairchild is Stephen's sister and befriended Keeley years ago. She has a young daughter, Maggie.
Cole Mathison's actions in Run to Me leave him feeling responsible for Keeley Fairchild and her children. Honor Stone is the FBI agent assigned to the case; she and Cole had a brief affair which he doesn't remember.
Noah McCall is Cole's boss at LCR and not sure if Cole should participate in this mission. Besides Eden and Jordan Montgomery (Rescue Me) are already on the job. The pregnant Shea and Ethan Bishop (Run to Me) arrive to replace Eden and Jordan. Dylan and McKenna, a.k.a., Ghost, help in Thailand.
Cindy Brackett is an older woman who owns the children's clothing store in town. Wesley Tuttle is scum...and rather proud of it. He's had his eye on Keeley since high school and this is a very welcome opportunity. Bobby and Ava bought one of the girls. Sheriff Hiram Mobley practically licks Elizabeth's boots.
The Cover The cover has a band of textured red showcasing the author's name with the bottom three-quarters a tint of blue over a prone couple kissing. The red from the band is repeated in the title.
The title refers to Cole's Second Chance at life, at happiness, with Keeley.
Second Chance revolves around Cole Mathison whom we got to know in one of the previous books. He had been held captive and brain washed by Rosemount. During his capture he lost control due to the drugs given him and unknowingly killed an innocent man. Since then he has kept a vigil outside the widow's house, Keeley Fairchild and her twin daughters. He has vowed that he will not let anything happen to them. Called away on another mission, the very things he vowed to protect are at risk. The twins have been kidnapped. He tells Noah McCall (head of LCR) that he wants the case - no two ways about it. He will get them back. After all he knows the loss of family as his wife and daughter were murdered after he gave some students (he was a teacher) failing grades which in turn got them kicked off their team. Their payback was to get back at Cole and not finding him at home, took their revenge out on his family.
Keeley lives for her twin daughters. They are the light of her life since the kidnap and consequent death of her ‘weird and estranged’ husband. Her life is thrown upside down and her heart practically ripped out when she is accosted by masked men on an outing to a park with her daughters. She remains strong and will do what needs to be done to find and get her daughters back.
However, during all of this, Cole doesn't count on falling in love with Keeley and she in turn falls for Cole. As always in life, some people, more than others, come with baggage and the turmoil of when this baggage needs to be unloaded is always a heavy decision to make and there is usually a high price to pay and consequences to face.
This story takes you through deceit and cover-ups plus a mother-in-law that absolutely hates your guts. Those that do hate a person that much, have always done something in their lives they refuse to account for and promptly take it out on somebody else. Be careful who you trust. Just because you've known someone for years makes them no less capable of great harm to you and yours. When you think you know someone extremely well - you find out that you never knew them at all.
This book was emotional for me as were all the others. I just could not fathom my child being taken from me, not even for an hour and to find out who could hate you so much to put you through this is mind boggling.
All the characters in the LCR series have had troublesome lives but despite them or because of them they do what's right and help save others. Loved this one too.
Second chance, the 5th book in the LCR series; Cole Mathison who was first introduced in Run to Me was captured and thought dead had been captured by Donald Rosemount and turned into a monster and unfortunately killed someone in the process. Cole Mathison, longing for redemption joins a mission in the mysterious kidnapping of Keeley Fairchild’s twins, Hailey and Hannah. Rescuing the children is his mission but falling in love with the widow of the man he killed was something that isn’t in his plans.
Keeley Fairchild, widow of Stephen Fairchild is a public enemy in Fairview due to the antagonistic behaviour orchestrated by her mother-in-law where the Fairchild name held high power in the town since the town was founded by Stephen Fairchild’s great-grandfather. Elizabeth, Keeley’s mother-in-law is definitely one who’s bitter and resentful to everything and her behavior towards her granddaughter makes her so much less of a person but yet I have to compliment the author of doing a good job of creating the mixed feeling of a reader i.e., despising her but yet pitying her towards the end of the story.
The rescue mission is always amazing but I have to agree with fellow reviewers that the investigation portion seems to lack especially in this book. Jenna Banks is Keeley’s best friend where she was raised by Keeley’s mother, Kathleen Daniels. I do enjoy this book with its non-stop suspense on who’s the real antagonist or the mastermind of the disappearance of Keeley’s twins. However, as much as many reviewers who likes the relationship between the H/H, I guess I am the minority which isn’t fond of them. Having read Run to me where Cole was turned into a monster and later rescued by Shea and Ethan, I was hoping for a happy ending for him but in his standalone series, I was not rooting the relationship between Cole and Keeley. Yes, I do agree with fellow readers that Keeley is a sweet lady but somehow or rather, I think Keeley is independent enough with or without Cole. So, in the later part of the story where she seems so vulnerable seems a little farfetched on my impression of her.
Despite the disappointment in the relationship, I do like how the story progresses between all the supporting characters and the heartwarming ending of this story. Will still be looking forward to reading the rest of the series and be amazed at Christy Reece’s writing. Overall, I will give this book a 4-star rating.
I've been looking forward to and hoping that Cole would get his own HEA after Run To Me. Luckily, I didn't have to wait long for his book, and it didn't disappoint.
Cole has endured hell in the form of torture when he was captured by Rosemount. He has done biddings, all of which while he was drugged and had no cognitive reasoning, that included killing an innocent man. Now that he's recovered, he vowed to ensure the safety of the man's widow and his children.
Keeley Fairchild is moving on with her life, taking care of her twin daughters after losing her husband. She's been ostracized by the town people, who's all under the influence of her mother-in-law. She doesn't go into town much or leave the compound of her house. When she does however, her daughters become kidnapped by people who have held her responsible for actions and decisions she made years ago. When Cole learns of this, he will do everything in his power to get them back and perhaps, gains redemption for himself.
The bad guys in this one kept me guessing between 2 characters, but I narrowed it down about halfway through. The motives behind it was crazy twisted though.
Cole may be my favorite hero of the series so far. He lost so much and gone through hell and back. He keeps promises he makes, and he has the vulnerable side to him that's not portrayed often in most heroes. It was nice to see him have his own happiness. I also enjoyed Keeley's character. She needs a new circle of family and friends, that's for sure, but she fought hard for her daughters under horrible circumstances. I'm glad it didn't take long for her to come to her senses with Cole. These two pulled at my heartstrings for them to get their happy ending and it was well worth it.
I had forgotten Cole (it's been a while since I read the first three books) but he was drugged and forced to be a mindless killer. I can't recall whether we knew what happened so I won't spoil just in case.
Cole feels guilty for "what he did" and is looking over a young widow and her twin daughters from afar. Unbeknownst to him, she has an enemy, someone who wants to see her suffer, who arranges for her five year old daughters to be kidnapped. Keeley engages Last Chance Rescue to help her find her children - it seems like the entire town hates her - but why?
I guessed the identity of the mysterious enemy although not the reasons. Although to be fair there were three people it could have been. I thought the reasons why the enemy had Keeley's daughters kidnapped and the other things that happened were well put together and plausible.
Cole and Keeley were a good couple and there was very little of the push-me, pull me relationship angst which this type of book tends too excel in.
Looking forward to the next book which is Ghost's.
Second Chance - Last Chance Rescue #5 - (Cole and Keeley) - 4 year old twins are kidnapped. Cole killer their father and rescued all.
He might never know the heaven of Keeley's arms, but he'll never survive the hell of failing to save her.
I'm becoming more and more addicted to this series with every passing book that I read. Here we have Cole, who suffered through some pretty hard things in his life already and now has to come face to face with the wife of the innocent man he's killed. I think both Cole and Keeley were incredibly strong willed characters who had some awful things happen to them and now are thrown together toward a single goal that is getting Keeley's daughters back. Their relationship slowly built around a horrible situation, but it ended up being a wonderful thing in the end. I loved their interactions and their chemistry and along with all the great writing from Christy Reece, this book easily became one of my favorites from the series.
Loved the overall story and the balance/tension in the RS. It was easy to connect and empathize with both the hero and heroine especially bearing in mind their backgrounds. A couple of issues that I felt discontented with - firstly, there were coincidences that we're too contrived and insufficiently detailed e.g the discovery of the 2nd child in a country were one of the investigators was adopting from (and just happened to be in)?...how did she end up there? Secondly, the motivations behind some of the actions didn't sound solid...e.g the mother-in-law's hateful campaign, the hero's secret about the heroine's husband's death...If these had been addressed, the book would have been higher rated.
This is Coles book and his mission is to locate and rescue two kidnapped children . They are the daughters of the businessman who he killed while being drugged and tortured in a previous book.He becomes close with the girls mother Keeley while working the case, but he does not reveal what he did.He feels very guilty and conflicted with his feelings for her. Their relationship is a slow burn. There is a lot of action in this book, as Keeley is also in danger. The only thing that kept it from being five stars is it is apparent there are only 3 suspects, so easy to figure out who is behind it all. Overall this is an entertaining read and a great addition to the series.
I have to agree with everyone that wanted to see Cole get a happy ending!!! This was another one that I had a hard time putting down!! This book had more of a suspenseful but yet playful air to it that had me hooked the entire time!!! I love Cole and Keeley is a great female character; they are awesome together! I was also thrilled to get more of Jordan and Eden too!! I missed them and was SOO happy for them in this book!!!!!! (I had been wondering about them and was happy to see them again!)
Absolutely a spectacular and riveting read. I couldn't wait for Cole's story to be told and what a deliverance. You will not be able to set this book aside until finished guaranteed. The topic is every parents nightmare and Christy delivered this story making you feel every emotion because of the topic of this story and what parents fear most. It definitely was spine tingling suspense at its best. Second Chance will have you sitting on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. This story was a solid 5 deserving more.
Second Chance features LCR agent Cole who has probably the most tortured life out of the agents so far. This is another fantastic book in the LCR series capturing many emotions. I kept changing my mind on who I thought the villain was. One of my favorite things is the return of previous written characters and introductions to upcoming characters. They never take away from the main characters and you do not need to have read their story to enjoy this book. Their stories are so good you really need to though. A very well written and suspenseful book.
I enjoyed this book a bit better then the first one in this series. It was finally good to hear Cole's story. you learn so much about him from the start of the LRC series and its about time that poor guy got his happy ending. I enjoy Christy Reece. SHe does a good job of introducing the characters so by the time there story comes up you already have a place for them in your mind and heart. looking forward to the last book in this series.
What can I say about this book? Well first off I liked the book very much (but didn't love) it was interesting though. I think that the reason that I didn't love this book is because when I first started to read it and I think that I read it too close to the previous book and so I had almost like "Last Chance Rescue Overload". I have a hard time reading books again so this book felt part like a reread but also like a first time reading it.
I love this whole series. I would highly recommend. This series is a mixture of rough type military men and women, but in the end love wins. The scenarios are believable and you find yourself pulling for the hero and heroine and sitting on the edge of you seat and turning the pages really fast to get to the next part of the story.
