Botticelli
Durante la vida de Sandro Botticelli (1444/45-1510), la influencia de su arte apenas llegó más allá de su Florencia natal, y tras su muerte fue rápidamente olvidado. En el siglo XIX fue redescubierto por los prerrafaelitas. Desde entonces, Botticelli está considerado como uno de los más grandes artistas del Renacimiento. Um bom livro para quem quer saber um pouco mais sobre as obras de Botticelli e a sua ligação com a família Medici.
No entanto é bastante parco em descrever a vida deste artista.
Ou seja, para quem procura uma boa biografia de Botticelli este livro não é o ideal.

"Botticelli" de Barbara Deimling es una introducción a la obra de este pintor que a mí me gusta bastante, es un libro corto y enfocado en su trabajo artístico, comparación de épocas, técnicas y temáticas. Buen libro y entretenido.

A través de este libro, tendremos la posibilidad de hacer un recorrido por la vida y obra de Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, conocido mundialmente por Sandro Botticelli, desde sus inicios hasta su muerte, en 1510. Así pues, permite ver la evolución de su estilo pictórico, como éste se fue modificando a raíz de sus aprendizajes, experiencias y creencias y, a la vez, ver como un mismo tema fue representado de un modo u otro según el momento en que fue concebida la obra.
Me ha parecido muy interesante, pues va entrelazando la vida del pintor con las obras que fue realizando, contextualizándolas, explicando los motivos que llevaron a Botticelli a crearlas y, en muchos de los casos, explicando su simbolismo. Además, nos encontraremos con curiosidades sobre el autor, la época histórica y algunas de sus obras, como por ejemplo el porqué de su apodo “Botticelli”.
En definitiva, un libro que me ha fascinado, ya que muchas de sus obras me encantan, entre las cuales destaco “La Primavera” (1477-1478), “Minerva y el centauro” (1482), “Venus y Marte” (1485),“Nacimiento de Venus” (1486) y “La calumnia de Apeles” (1495). Si queréis conocer un poco más a fondo la vida y obra de Botticelli, este es un buen libro para llevar a cabo este propósito.

Botticelli by Barbara Deimling
I read this as part of my Art History Project. It was just perfect for a novice student such as I. I knew nothing of Botticelli and his work. While the book is not lengthy, there is enough background of what was going on in Florence in the late 15th century and enough of Botticelli's life to make him real. The paintings selected for the book were excellent in that Deimling explains what is going on in the painting and points out the changes in his painting style through time. This book did just what I wanted in my Art History project-- it introduced me to an artist and show me enough of his work to make me want to see and learn more.

Primavera, Venus y Marte y El Nacimiento de Venus son algunas de las obras que más me llaman la atención de Botticelli. Una de las cosas que no sabía era que en "La Primavera" se han identificado casi 500 especies de plantas, entre ellas 190 flores. Realmente, quedé aún más fascinada con estas obras de Sandro Botticelli al conocer los significados que revela esta guía sobre su trabajo. Considero importante comprender la iconografía de estas obras, ya que facilita su interpretación.
Contras:
La guía incluye, obviamente, las obras de Botticelli, pero el contexto de las mismas se encuentra en una página anterior o posterior, lo que me hizo fácil confundirme sobre qué obra se estaba comentando. Por esta razón, le doy 4 de 5 estrellas.

I was disappointed that one of my favourite paintings 'the birth of venus' was over two pages, rendering the image to be unclear to my eye.
Nonetheless, I am enthralled with the chapter on mythological love and it's escapism. I adore his attention to detail with his focus on beauty. 'The birth of venus' range of colour was exquisite yet his work was dark with his false grasp of the female body and the idealised feminine attributes.

Amo a Botticelli con todas las fuerzas de mi alma y leer este libro fue, así, muuuy bacano para mí. Aquí pueden encontrar un recorrido, más que biográfico, artístico, del conocido Sandro Botticelli (porque él Botticelli no se llamaba, el libro explica de dónde salió ese apodo!!!).

Me ha gustado más cómo divulga la autora en este caso que en los de Leonardo y Miguel Ángel, pese a que como artista Botticelli me guste menos: explicación de pinturas, contexto histórico y social, etc.

Emocionada de volver a este tipo de lecturas que siempre me han encantado, enamorada de la obsesión de Botticelli por ilustrar a Dante y a las historias mitológicas y agradecida de que no hubiera consecuencias por todas las acusaciones de homosexualidad

This had several brilliant moments of detail and information that helped me contextualise, imagine and understand Botticelli more. I am already a fan - so don't expect this book to be any fun if you aren't.
The early Renaissance and Renaissance Italy are fascinating to many people around the world. It produced some of the most widely and instantly recognisable art and artists of all time - perhaps the best example being Michaelangelo, and particularly his statue of David in Florence. Botticelli precedes this work by a few decades, and actually in parts of his career he moves backward to previous perspectives, ideas and influences which are more religious and gothic than Renaissance. Nonetheless, his most famous works - the Primavera (my favourite) and the Birth of Venus are quite certainly in the Renaissance tradition and all of his creative output should be understood in relationship to those schools of art before and after his own time.
I was fascinated to find out that art historians have identified by detail almost 500 plants painted into the Primavera, including 190 types of flower. How utterly extravagant and rich.
Botticelli's career goes through more 'back and forth' than I thought it would and was not presented as a simple transition but as having phases of work roughly divided into a first immature third, a second very successful mature phase and a third recidivist and conservative phase before his death at a younger age than I suspected.
The detail and insight here was enjoyable and extremely informative.

It's struck me as confusing why such a large group of people I admire find Botticelli to be the greatest. It's undeniable, at his most powerful, Botticelli created works that are both gorgeous and perplexing. However, like a lot of artists, his early work is lacking - awkward, jammed compositions with no real story or mood to draw the viewer in. And those weaker works are included in this Taschen collection alongside his masterworks. My main gripe with this book, that still should be owned or read due to its price, is several of my favourite paintings take up two pages and, as many a art fan will concur, this strategy is annoying.
But, this could be 5 stars for Botticelli enthusiasts or, perhaps, there's a larger book out there that doesn't commit the two-page for a painting sin?

Un libro muy corto el cual nos habla de la vida del pintor solo en su faceta de pintor nunca en su faceta personal a lo largo del libro descubriremos algunas de las obras de dicho pintor las cuales analiza a veces con demasiada precisión para esas personas que no entienden mucho del arte de dicho artista y algunas cosas se hacen pesadas y sobran dependiendo del tipo de lector que seas

me encantan estas ediciones de Taschen para conocer a los artistas, saber de su vida y de sus obras (y el por qué de estas). muy contenta con esta edición, aunque los cuadros que más me han interesado son los de mitología, ya que mi nulo conocimiento religioso frena el gusto a las obras religiosas de botticelli.
