Absolutely brilliant. So thought provoking. I will need to read it again though since some of the content requires more time to fully process.

من بدايات الخيال العلمي وإرهاصاته الأولى في القرن التاسع عشر، وقد تقاطعت مواضيعه بشكل واضح جدًا مع مواضيع فلسفية شغلت أذهان الفلاسفة منذ زمن بعيد، خصوصًا مع آلة الزمن، لويلز. الرواية التي شكلت واحدة من أشهر روايات الخيال العلمي، وأسهمت في وضع أسس روايات الخيال العلمي التي تتحدث عن الزمن.
وفي كتاب «الخيال العلمي والفلسفة» الذي حررته سوزان شنايدر (الفيلسوفة الأمريكية)، نرى مقالات لزمرة من الفلاسفة والعلماء والمستقبليين، بالإضافة لمجموعة من القصص القصيرة المميزة في الخيال العلمي في تحفة علمية وخيال علمية وفلسفية يبلغ عدد صفحاتها خمسمائة وخمسين صفحة.
الكتّاب يحاولون من خلال صفحات الكتاب التوصل لإمكانية حل (أو على الأقل فهم) المعضلات التي تثيرها قصص الخيال العلمي، من خلال عرض رأي العلم والفلسفة في الموضوع، مثل معضلة الجد التي سبق وأن أشرنا إليها.

ثم محطة الذكاء الاصطناعي، ووعي الذكاء الاصطناعي من خلال أعمال أسيموف، مثل رجل المائتي عام وأحلام روبوت. وربما يكون هذا الجزء بالذات أكثرهم اقترابًا مما يحدث على ساحات التكنولوجيا حديثًا، فأغلبنا يعرف الجدال الشهير بين إلون ماسك (مؤسس شركة سبيس إكس وصاحب الإنجازات التكنولوجية الكبيرة)، ومارك زوكربرج مؤسس موقع فيس بوك حول الذكاء الاصطناعي ووصوله لنقطة سيستطيع بعدها تدميرنا.

ثم يتعرض للجانب الإنساني والأخلاقي في الخيال العلمي من خلال أعمال مثل عالم جديد شجاع (بعض الترجمات بعنوان: العالم الطريف) لألدوس هكسلي، وعوالم المستقبل التي ربما تتغير فيها الأخلاقيات بواسطة التكنولوجيا الجديدة، خصوصا البيولوجيا والتلاعب بالجينات والذكاء الاصطناعي، ووقوع هذه التقنيات في أيدي دكتاتوريات تتحكم في مصائر الشعوب والإنسان على المستوى الفردي والحرية الشخصية.
ثم ينتهي الكتاب بالجزء الأكثر إثارة والسؤال الأكثر جدلًا عن ماهية الزمن واحتمالات السفر عبر الزمن وموانعه، والمفارقات التي تنتج عنه، وحل تلك المفارقات، حتى أن بعضهم يقول أنه لو كان السفر تبر الزمن مستحيلا، فإن السبب في ذلك لم يكتشف بعد.
رأيي في الكتاب:
- الكتاب رائع بحق، وتنوع المؤلفين كما قلنا أعطى له ثراء كبير في الموضوعات التي يقدمها.
- وجود القصص القصيرة واحد من أهم جوانب قوة الكتاب، فهي تعطي تمثيلا قصصيا للمشكلات التي يعرضها الكتاب، إضافة لأن القصة ذاتها تمثل استراحة ممتعة بين المواضيع الثقيلة والتفاصيل العلمية الكثيرة.
- أسلوب الكتاب عموما سهل في معظم الأجزاء، ولا يتطلب معرفة كبيرة جدًا بالموضوعات التي يتحدث عنها.
- الترجمة كان عليها بعض الملاحظات الصغيرة جدًا في صياغة الجمل، وبعض الأخطاء الإملائية، والنحوية القليلة جدًا، والتي لا تلغي أبدًا المجهود الضخم الذي بُذل لترجمة كتاب بهذه الجودة.
استمتعوا بهذه الوجبة الرائعة من الخيال العلمي.

The hypothesis was sound:
I love Science Fiction.
I love Philosophy.
This is a book that brings two of my favorite things together in one book.
This book will be awesome.
The book certainly wasn't bad, and I'd still probably recommend it those with any sort of passing interest in either subject, and maybe in particular those who think they're only interested in one. But it failed in living up to my dreams and I think there is one main reason.
A few years ago I read a simply marvelous book called The Mind's I: Fantasies and Reflections on Self and Soul. A fantastic philosophy book edited by Daniel Dennett and Douglas Hofstadter. Similar to this book, they bring together stories and essays by various individuals, but what really made Mind's I stand out in my opinion, is the end of chapter analyses by Dennett and Hofstadter. This is exactly what Schneider's book could have used. Short write ups discussing the essay, how it relates to science fiction or philosophy, and maybe further explorations of the issues. It really could have helped engage the reader in the ideas discussed, particularly for a few of the essays that didn't seem to relate to science fiction in an immediately obvious way.
It's worth noting that had every chapter in the book been fantastically brilliant, I may not have had the desire for better write ups after each one. There were still enough interesting essays to make the book worth reading, it just didn't live up to my, admittedly high, expectations.

Exceptional corpus of studies by many modern intellectuals dealing with five subjects: a) simulation, b) identity-free will-nature of persons, c) natural-artificial-hybrid-super mind, d) ethical and political issues, e) space and time. Each one of these five subjects corresponds to some important and representative Sci-Fi movies and novels. It is very pleasant that each part doesn' t start by a study, but with a short fiction story, introductory to the subject.
Criticism of the book: for the most part, the analyses are included inside epistemology and cognitive science, ignoring the social and historical dimensions of literature and cinema.
Of cource the level of the studies is very high. Sci-Fi beauty and the feeling of the sublime are increased and don't disappear when reading these philosophy papers.

"يحسب كل شخص أن حدود رؤاه الخاصة هي حدود العالم"
أن هذا الكتاب هو وقفة احترام للفضول البشري.
هل تساءلت يوماً أن كنت تعيش داخل مصفوفة أو داخل نوع ما من أنواع الكومبيوتر؟ أو تساءلت ماذا سيحدث أذا أصبحت الروبوتات واعية ؟ وهل يمكنها أن تصبح واعية من الأساس؟ ماذا عن الإرادة الحرة هل نملكها أم هي مجرد وهم يوجد داخل توليفات عقولنا لإعطائنا حس أخلاقي عن تصرفاتنا؟ والسؤال الكبير, هل يمكننا السفر عبر الزمن؟ هل يمكننا تغيير الماضي؟
"هل حلمت في أي وقت, يا نيو, بأنك كنت متأكداً تماماً من أن حلمك حقيقي. ماذا لو أنك لم تستطع الاستيقاظ من هذا الحلم؟ كيف تعرف الفرق بين عالم الحلم والعالم الحقيقي؟"
بالطبع أن لم تتساءل\ي يوما عن هذه الأشياء فهذا الكتاب ليس لك, وأنت تحتاج\ين إلى مساعدة نفسية عاجلة وضرورية. لكن أن كنت من الشق الأول ممن تساءل, ممن توقف أثناء فلم ماتريكس وتساءل كيف أعلم أني موجود حقاً في عالم مادي ولست في مصفوفة فنيو كان يعيش في وهم مثالي قبل لقاء مورفيوس, فهذا الكتاب أفضل ما قد تقع عليه يديك.
"لا يمكن للعلم أن ينقذنا من عدم إنسانية كل منا تجاه الآخر, يمكنه فقط جعل نزعاتنا التدميرية أكثر فعالية وأكثر وحشية."
الكتاب عبارة عن مقالات وقصص متفرقة جمعت من قبل المحررة ورتبتها في خمسة فصول كل فصل يتناول أحد المساءل الأساسية التي تثار كثيراً في قصص الخيال العلمي. وهذه الفصول هي:
1- هل يمكن أن أكون في مصفوفة أو محاكاة حاسوب
2- ما طبيعتي؟ الإرادة الحرة وطبيعة الأشخاص
3- العقل : الطبيعي, الاصطناعي, والهجين, والفائق
4- قضايا أخلاقية وسياسية
5- المكان والزمان
"النوع الوحيد من السياسة الذي له معنى هو السياسة التي تنبع مما هو ضروري من الحاجة إلى العيش كما يجب لكل شخص أن يعيش ومن ثم-لعرض الأمر بشكل درامي إلى حد ما- لتحمل مسؤولية العالم كله."
أن تجميعة المقالات كانت في محلها فرغم أن المقالات قد كتبت من قبل أشخاص مختلفين في أوقات مختلفة ألا أنها بدت كنوع من الاستمرارية التي حافظت على تدفق الكتاب كوحدة كاملة. بالإضافة إلى القصص التي وفرت نوع من الاستراحة بين المقالات المعقدة وساعدت كثيراً كمثال في النقاشات المختلفة.
الكتاب ليس من أفضل الكتب في العالم فهو سيناسبك فقط أذا كنت من محبي الخيال العلمي وكنت منزعج من النهايات السخيفة لقصصك وأفلامك المفضلة وأردت نقاشاً حقيقياً للتضمينات المترتبة على السفر عبر الزمن ومفهوم الوعي وهل يمكن لكائن غير بشري أن يملكه وهل التحسين الجيني شيء أخلاقي أو لا؟ فأن لم تكن متحمساً قوياً للخيال العلمي فهذا الكتاب سيشعرك بالملل والضجر. بالخصوص مع المقالات المعقدة والاستدلالات الفلسفية المطولة التي يتبعها الكُتاب لتوصيل أفكارهم.
"أفضل سبب للاعتقاد بأن الروبوتات قد يأتي عليها يوم تصبح فيه واعية, هو أننا الكائنات البشرية واعية, وأننا أنفسنا نوع ��ن الروبوتات."
من عيوب هذا الكتاب أن الترجمة ليست جيدة بل منخفضة جداً في أحدى المقالات التي أكملتها بصعوبة والكثير من الأخطاء الإملائية في عموم الكتاب.
وهناك بعض المقالات التي قد تواجه صعوبة فيها مثل الفصل الرابع عشر فقد تحتاج إلى معرفة مسبقة قليلاً بعلم الأعصاب وفيزياء الالكترونيات.
لكن ككل فهذا الكتاب هو تجربة رائعة في فضول الطفولة. فأن قرأته فأبتسم فأنت فضولي وهذا وحده سبب لكي تفرح.

To me the best science fictions tackles perplexing philosophical questions and carries out philosophical thought experiments through an artistic and scientific narrative. The fictional aspect of good science fiction allows us to suspend disbelief and reality to take our minds to areas we typically would not venture in the real world. Science fiction is a powerful lens for changing our view of the world today and scientific potential for tomorrow. Susan Schneider’s Science Fiction and Philosophy surveys a broad set of philosophical ideas buried in contemporary science fiction. These include multidimensional universes, time travel, simulations, sentient machines, computational mind theory, and super-intelligence just to name a few. This book is a must-read for those of us who use science fiction as a means of extending our perception and imagination of the future.
The content is sourced from and eclectic set of contributors. The key contribution of the book is its breadth in surveying the area while the main drawback is its lack of continuity and the sketchy overly academic style of some of the contributing authors. I was especially disappointed with Ned Block’s chapter on the Mind as the Software of the Brain. This chapter had some much potential but the author chose instead to get bogged down in the minutiae of electronic circuitry and overloaded the structure of the chapter with arcane terminology and meandering, dry overly academic discourse. Another drawback is in the editing. The prose could have been made more approachable for the novice reader with better structure and again more continuity of style.
Regardless of these huge drawbacks, I still find a study of the philosophical underpinnings of science fiction both interesting and important. Readers can use this book as a framework for discovering good scientific writing or for allowing reading in science fiction to guide their internal philosophical discourse. For example, after reading this book, I have realized how works by Iain M. Banks on the Culture series are not just good but brilliant. Other authors of interest who pop up are Neal Ascher, and Neal Stephenson. Serious fans of science fiction should at least skim the contents of Science Fiction and Philosophy. It is well worth the time and will enrich your appreciation of great writing in the genre.

Unimaginative. For a contrast see Stanislaw Lem's Summa Technologiae. Also there is not enough of a tie between the philosophy (what little there is here) and science fiction literature.

The essays in themselves were a wonderful read - I am still getting through them.

Issues of personal identity, and "the Mind-body" problem were fun reads.
I would have liked to have read more essays exploring how sci-fi texts have dabbled and tackled philosophical issues, such as the mind-body problem, or how the genre itself has changed over time and it's relation with science, technology and culture.

Much like an actual philosophy class, this book features both very intriguing, insightful comments on the topic and rambling, long essays that take forever to get to the point and do so in a "I'm so much smarter than everyone here so I need to repeat myself twenty times" attitude.
I also hoped for more actual analysis of and integration of science fiction media into the philosophical musings. Most of the authors in this collection only see them as a starting point or brief explanatory example to make their point with. So while a few chapters were quite interesting, overall I expected a little more from this collection than I got.

I was very excited to start this book... every time I tried to start it.
This is very clearly a textbook, and I absolutely would have engaged with it better and enjoyed it more if I had encountered it as part of a philosophy class where I could respond to the text with other people and an instructor.
The fiction selections were... fine... but not really great.
The essays were mostly well done; but, as is the habit with many modern philosophers, there was quite a bit of crafting the questions to support the already determined answer.
I am glad I read it, but I won't be taking it off my shelf again... unless I happen to be taking a class that uses it as a textbook.

الكتاب ممتاز من حيث عرضه لقضايا الخيال العلمى ومناقشتها فلسفيا. المحتوى عميق ويحتاج لتركيز فى القراءه. يعيب على الكتاب انه يهاجم المعتقدات الدينيه صراحه ويقوم بإدخال الشك فى العقائد. هو موضوع جانبى ولا يعتبر موضوع مهم ومن اساسيات الكتاب. لذا أرى انه كان من الافضل عدم طرح القضايا العقائديه . ايضا الكتاب اصدار عام 2009 ولكن يبدو ان المؤلفه اهملت كل التطور التكنولوجى ما بعد 2005 لذا تشعر انه يوجد بعد القضايا تعتبر قديمه إلى حد ما.

نصوص أساسية من بين أكثر المنظرين تأثيرا؛ تلتقي داخل هذا العمل لتصنع ما يشبه المرجع الذي يحاول تقديمة مراجعة شاملة للحدود بين الخيال العلمي والفلسفة. من الذي يصنع الآخر وكيف يتعالقان. النصوص التي تم اختيارها متنوعة تاريخيا وفلسفيا وفنيا. ولكنه تغطي معظم جوانب الموضوع. الكتاب هو ترجمة للطبعة الإنجليزية الأولى ابصادرة قي ٢٠٠٩. ثمة طبعة ثانية للكتاب صدرت في ٢٠١٦ حذفت منها بعض النصوص. الترجمة عموما لا بأس بها وإن كنت أرى أنه يمكن تجويدها بشكل أفضل.

Good selection of fiction and non-fiction articles that make you think, which probably is the intention of the book.
The only part I didn't really like was the end where speculation about time didn't really amount to much philosophical thought. The serious articles about this topic where not exactly thought provoking but more kind of a play thing. Maybe I have already read and seen too much science fiction to be intrigued by these (half) serious speculations.

Jedan od boljih zbornika koje sam pročitao, teme koje zbornik pokriva su raznovrsne od misaonih eksperimenata u filozofiji i naučnoj fantastici preko transhumanističke tematike do pitanja veštačke inteligencije. Svaki članak bez izuzetka je ponudio jednu novu perspektivu i zainteresovao me za naučnu fantastiku i povezanost naučne fantastike i filozofije.

This book wasn’t really what I expected. It was just a compilation of various essays on certain philosophical subjects. I was already familiar with most of the ones I actually enjoyed. Some of them I found to be too complex for me to understand, and others I just wasn’t really interested it. I’d rate this book 2.5/5

The essays were interesting. However, they were about philosophy with little interaction with science fiction. Most of the authors followed their ideas - many on philosophy of mind - without even a nod to the science fiction of the title.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get through this. I thought it would be fun to read about sci-fi instead of reading sci-fi for a change, but my hatred of academic philosophy won over.

An anthology of essays, mostly philosophical arguments that use thought experiments with a science fiction flavor. The essays vary a good deal in tone and intended audience. There's even a little fiction, (part of?) a good story by Asimov called "Robot Dreams," and "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury. The book is arranged in five sections by topic: one on living in a simulation, one on how to define persons and whether they can have free will, one on robots and cyborgs, one on "ethical issues," and one on what the laws of physics mean. The science fiction dealt with is almost all technological rather than being related to natural or social science, even in the section on ethics, but not the one on physics.
The only significant spoilers I noticed were on The Minority Report (the essay is on the movie; I made sure to read the short story), Terminator (which I haven't and may never watch), and "The Bicentennial Man" (I'm leaving that chapter unread for a little so I can read the later novel version of the story, The Positronic Man.

A bit scattered, and I found some contributions to be more worthwhile than others. A few even seemed downright out of place, though I'm forced to concede that they are in fact works of philosophy (even though some may not construe them as such). But overall, the investigations of mind, personhood, time, and ethics, as related to science-fictional tropes and plot devices, is interesting and worthwhile.

I never thought Sci-Fi and philosophy mixed, but apparently they do. This book is an interesting mix of amazing, mind-bending, Sci-Fi short stories, accompanied by various philosophical essays that discuss themes related to the stories. As the book title implies, the themes range from time travel, superintelligence, what it means to be human, technological advancements, among other interesting bits. If the book title interests you, then I think you'll like it.

The science fiction in this book is good, the philosophy isn't bad, but the length and depth of the some of the articles can become dull and boring and seems to drag on forever. I would say read at your own peril, as the thought experiments as presented are interesting, but can get long in the tooth.

What a boring, tedious book. It's not propagating new ideas about science fiction and mostly recyles themes from science fiction movies ('Minority Report', 'The Matrix). The language is ponderous and difficult to read. Someone like Bill Bryson is needed to revamp this book. A waste of time

This book is a collection of papers on a wide range of issues in modern philosophy: personal identity, the self, metaphysics of conciousness uploading, the logical possibility of time travel, nature of reality, etc. Immensely accessible and interesting!
