Here is a marvelous record of this enchanting land, portraying the essence of Greece, its striking sea & landscape, its peoples, its culture & history & its ancient monuments.
I was absolutely blown away by this book. And to think I got it 50% off at a museum bookshop, thinking little of it.
I expected a book filled with mostly photography of the Greek landscape, and I was partially right in my assumption but it was really the text that got me. Of course, there was more than a few times that I whispered 'oh my god its so pretty' to myself.
The prose was breathtakingly elegant and I fell a little more in love with modern-day Greece with each and every paragraph. The quotes used fit each passage perfectly as did the photos the accompanied them - or rather the text fit the photos perfectly.
And one of the authors hail from Greece himself (although no longer living there)? From that point onward, as it was mentioned at the beginning of the book, I knew this was going to be good.
My favourite part though is that classical Greece, as much as I love it, did not take up the majority of the book. Instead it was given a section, as well as a mention of its importance, no bigger than the rest.
I don't normally put non-fiction books into my favourites list as most of my favourites are ones I plan to read from cover to cover again but this one is certainly the exception, being the first.
