An SAS group is operating in Bosnia, directing air strikes against Serb positions. They are attacked, but their lives are saved by a Muslim woman, Kara. She is recruited by a group of Muslim fundamentalists, but Kara's game is altogether bigger, more shocking and more important.
Definitely a case of "not really my thang". The human side of this story, set during and after the Bosnian War, is really good. Kara's life reduced to nothing, sowing the seeds of fanaticism. It's the other side, the black ops, the chest pounding, muscle showing and Euro politics, that I found a bit boring. If you like that sort of stuff then this is probably for you.
The description was very interesting; sounded right up my alley in terms of books I enjoy. However, what I read of the book, it did not live up to my expectations.
2 reasons why I feel this book wasn’t doing it for me.
1. It felt like we were being told, not shown and thus I felt removed from the story. It did nothing to drag me in and feel as if I was able to be a part of the story and make me care to see the book through.
2. Having 2 perspectives in the same chapter; alternating between Kara, and her fight for survival with her young son, as well as what the soldiers were doing during conflict situations.
