Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

This title just does not get dull!

description

I have to say I'm really impressed by Kirkman's ability to weave 20 side-plots with one main story in each issue. Just as one thing is starting to find resolve itself, something else pops up in a very organic fashion to keep you flipping the pages.

description

This title really has it all. Gory action scenes, a romantic love story, family relationships, friendships, work drama, and humor.

description

There's so much going on that occasionally I'll forget about a character or a thread, and then BOOM! they show up and shake the whole storyline!

description

And the cliffhangers! Ohmygod!
I can't wait to see where this goes...

Omni Man and Allen teaming up? Fuck yes.

Mark and Oliver teaming up? Hell YES!

Mark and Eve getting it on? WHOHOO!

Lots of great character building here. Watching Mark balance it all while having to come to terms with not trusting someone he DID trust was great. A real lesson learner as he's becoming more and more adult now. Also the fact Kirkman is spinning SO many plotlines at once and keeping up with giving us great focus on SO many characters is marvelous.

Ottley also really improves this volume as the fights get better and better as well. The emotional expressions are wonderful too, giving us some great moments.

The ending is so "holy shit" it is about to go down. A 4.5 out of 5.

The fifth volume of Invincible was quite fun. The artwork is also improving as well.

The story certainly ramps up- not only for Invincible but for his father. First Invincible goes through a lot- from leaving the government, to his developing relationship with his super hero girlfriend and the interesting interaction with his kid brother. The kid brother has become Omni-kid and joined his brother. But, he does not see a point in not killing enemies. This leads to a very interesting conversation and I don't think it portends well in the long run for Invincible.

The volume rounds out the story with Invincible teaming up with a Wolf-Man and introduces that character, at least to me, for the first time. It also includes an additional issue of Astounding Wolf-Man #11 that finishes the story.

Finally, Invincible's father and Allan the Alien attempt a rescue attempt and find out a secret about the Viltrumites.

Good, fun story. Can't say it's particularly deep, but it is very entertaining. I like the improved art and the story still retains the interesting twists and turns that make this such a fun read. Invincible is one of the most addictive and fun series I've read in awhile. It does nothing truly original, but what it does it does well.

This fifth volume has the theme of- who can you trust- as Mark grapples with Cecil Stedman, the leader of the Global Defense Agency. Mark has always followed Cecil's commands, but Cecil's use of the Reanimen and the looking past of Darkwing's murderous past, show that he is morally corrupt. Another example is when Mark teams with the Wolf Man who has been wrongly accused of a crime, and Cecil won't help out, because he feels he can not gain anything from him like he can from Darkwing. During this time Mark's younger brother Oliver has acquired his powers and wants to start fighting villains, so Mark steps up to teach him how to utilize them, but Oliver himself makes questionable decisions, as he admits that he is not human and not subject to their morality. A bright spot is his deepening relationship with Eve and that the former Teen Team sides with him as they too realize that Cecil can't be trusted. And in a parallel story, Allen the Alien and Omni-Man team up to break free of the spaceship they are imprisoned in and a secret is revealed about the Viltrumites. But what is Angstrom Levy planning...

Artist Ryan Ottley has really hit his stride with the illustrations. I liked the costume change (although the yellow was iconic) so he wouldn't clash with Oliver's new costume, which paid homage to Robin's (DC) costume. Loved the 16-panel grid showing Invincible's look in other multi-universes!

Just finished reading Issue 53 - I knew there was something off about Cecil since he first appeared and now I'm concerned about Oliver being truly evil.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who follows my reviews that I've given this series another five stars.

Kirkman continue to produce fantastic superhero comics. He ups the ante in terms of moral quandary here, with Mark discovering all the compromises Cecil has been making, and Cecil arguing, with some effectiveness, that given the importance of his goals, the ends justify the means.

Mark doesn't buy it, and he's battling different versions of the same conflict either directly or vicariously throughout the rest of the collection. We also get serious developments with Atom Eve, Allen the Alien, and Nolan Grayson (Omni-man). Oh, and Battle Beast shows up again and he's as over the top and entertaining as he was the first time around.

Es increíble que siga manteniendo el nivel después de tantos números. Cuando parece que llega un parón, que leemos un número de transición en el que poco o nada pasará, te sorprenden con un giro que no veías venir.

So far, it's the worst written one. I can't exactly pinpoint what's wrong with it, just that things don't convince me here at all. Still, I adore how this series "steals" from everything else, and the Dragon Ball rip-off is the best thing.

W tej serii najlepszy jest totalny brak spiny. Tu jest tyle powietrza, tak mało kojarzonego z superheroes patosu czy zwykłych idiotyzmów, że czytanie kolejnych tomów jest czystą przyjemnością

Definitely the best so far. Important things actually happen! The status quo is changed! The story has evolved! Just wish it took less than 4 compendiums to get to.

Oliver becomes a superhero sidekick in this volume. It's quite fun but at the same time, brutally realistic as he gets in jeopardy and makes lethal mistakes.

At first glance, I took INVINCIBLE to be a super-hero parody, but really it's more tongue-in-cheek loving homage to the 80s and 90s comics writer Robert Kirkman was weaned on. If you're passionate about the genre, but spend enough time wearing big boy pants to admit the inherent silliness of crime-fighters in spandex, you'll enjoy this series.

This particular volume sees Invincible finally fall out with Cecil Stedman, as Mark becomes aware of Cecil's moral grey areas; Mark's little brother Oliver becomes his sidekick, and Mark gets a new costume (with a black-and-blue color scheme, an homage meant to evoke Batman to Oliver's red-and-yellow Robin). As always, Kirkman keeps us off-balance with unexpected twists on his characters... and let's just say Oliver is turning out to be more like their dad than Mark would like.

Despite all the intentionally campy aspects, the characters (even the minor ones) and their relationships are rich in their complexity, and the slowly-simmering subplots consistently end up going in directions you'd never expect. Balancing all the wink-wink in-joke stuff with compelling character-driven drama isn't the easiest thing to make work, but Kirkman pulls it off. Ryan Ottley's cartoony, but expressive and dynamic, art is a perfect fit for both the over-the-top goofiness and the quieter, more human moments. Kudos to these guys for crafting a unique and truly satisfying super-hero epic.

Robert Kirkman solidifies his hold on the best series currently being written. Enough said, if you want something outside of the mainstream, established characters then do yourself a favor and pick up this series.

Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol 5 picks up the slack from Vol 4, and continues this amazing story.

This volume starts strong with Invincible finding out about the Reanimen and the fallout between Mark and Cecil. While I thought there would be bigger repercussions for Mark’s decision, I do like the fact that Cecil can still be used as another obstacle now for Invincible. I also liked the moral struggles Mark had to face in this volume, and how he’s starting to question his own super hero standards and methods. Now that Mark and Eve are together this is turning into a strong, healthy relationship that Mark really needs at this point.

Speaking of morals, the twist of Oliver’s perspectives on things was surprising and yet welcomed. You want to like the kid, but not quite know where his head is at adds some fun tension to the story. I’m looking forward to seeing where this story takes him.

Along with Oliver’s unknown future, Kirkman continues to set up future plot points that make us anxious to see how these threads fall. Titan is in an interesting place now that he’s not in the order anymore, the new villain PowerPlex sets up some interesting opportunities, but the biggest setup is the return of Angstrom Levy! I’m extremely curious to find out how he survived his last encounter with Mark and what he’s planning with the alternate Invincibles he’s rounding up.

As always, Ottley’s art is astounding and he has some beautiful spreads in this volume, so there’s not much more to say about the art... accept for the new costume. I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan. I like the color scheme as it fits the current tone of Mark and his temper and his current struggles. However, it’s too similar to his regular outfit, and the slight changes to the design aren’t for the better. While I realize this costume is only temporary, I look forward to the yellow returning to our hero.

Volume 5 is a return to form for the Invincible story, and had some really great moments. I really dug how edgy it got and the continued setups for future plots. Now it’s time to shelve this bad boy and crack open Volume 6!

a few thoughts, FUCK marks new suit im sorry art but it is like absolute fucking trash the yellow and blue suited mark SO well especially with his personality as invincible and jesus christ Olivers suit is the worst suit ever oh my god it reads as a Muslims halal swimming suit and kid omni man — wow that is just the worst. BUT I do have to say with the turn that mark is taking the intensity about the problems he’s facing the black and dark blue do kind of go along with that I do miss the knee pads though and the fingerless gloves

i feel bad because i kind of feel like omniman is kinda redeemed in my head like FUCK him for calling debbie a pet and everything but with everything now i really hope he makes up and she gets some sort of closure i think. also fuck cecil and fuck Oliver jesus the whole thing with cecil is so fucked up like i understand to a certain extent like i can understand but the way he treated mark and turned everyone against him just kind of sucks ass and with oliver god the way he didn’t even seem remorseful i really hope he doesn’t turn into a villain because the whole thing of him not appreciating humanity can really quickly turn him into a super bad villain

I LOVE MARK i adore him with every part of my being, he’s such a complex character and it’s really interesting with how you can see the vultrimite affect on him especially with his anger issues and because of his dad his very strict way of black and white he kind of reminds me of Batman in that way also allen is my favourite person ever actually

OK. SO. I DONT KNOW WHETHER I LOVE THIS OR HATE THIS. first off, new style unlocked??? very clean, very nice. love the colors. 2nd: why the FUCK is everyone so annoying. season 3 mark pissed me off so bad and this volume really just takes the cake. because, WHY IS HE WORSE HERE? and on top of that, oliver is just as bad. like boi if u dont SYBAU. also, why is eve lowkey shading amber, talking bout some "i get it mark, you wont ever have to explain why you have to leave so often, because im also a superhero, thats why our relationship will work" like GIRL werent you literally complaining a minute ago about mark having to leave?? JUSTICE FOR BOTH AMBERS. --also, AMBER GETTING BEAT? like wtf bro, please.... also mark being like "i think my dad is right!" and then crashing out on everyone like shut up bro. please. everyone just makes me so mad. also-- powerplexes storyline was given way more justice in the show vs the comics. i think the shows is way better at these characters than people give it credit for.

Everything in this volume, especially the characters and the relationships between them, consistently get messier and more complicated; it's fantastic. Additionally, the consequences of events from dozens of issues ago are still constantly popping back up to bite people.
The tonal shifts between drama, comedy, tragedy, romance, etc. remains excellently written, and is reflected just as well by the ever-improving artwork.
The only thing stopping it from being a 5-star comic is that sometimes there are these seemingly random lone pages that just take you away to a bit-scene somewhere else. They're largely good scenes, and serve to show that the secondary and tertiary characters still have lives outside of Mark's story, but they're positioned in a strange way that kept taking me out of the book and seemed more to be stalling for time/page space than anything else (not the Allen stuff though, that was all brilliant).

Mark Grayson, son of Nolan Grayson is Invincible. He could fly and has super power. He was half alien half human.

He has a girlfriend who has power too. They fight together.

The thing I like about this, is that Mark is very human and has human problem. Like girlfriend problem. There are Viltrumite agent who want to conquer Earth. He has fought them along side with his father who has switched side. But they are still a threat as they are strong and do not want peace in any other way.

More fighting. The struggle to find a peaceful solution run through the whole series.

Still going strong in this collection. Kirkman has a tendency to head into storylines that really wander before getting anywhere in The Walking Dead but he seems to have kept a tighter focus on keeping the story moving with Invincible. The only problem is there are a lot of story lines going on here, so despite the fact that they all get a little coverage not a whole lot happens with most of them. Still, that's just one more reason to keep reading, and I am still thoroughly enjoying the series. It's really the only superhero comic I have enjoyed in the last couple of decades.

Where Volume 4 had more grand stories, Volume 5 focuses more on personal stories. I particularly like the exposition of the budding relationship between Mark and Eve. It's also nice to see how Mark's relationship with his younger brother parallels his father's relationship to him. This series spares no punches, and when it hits, it hits hard.

Teaming ups: didn't like the idea of Oliver and the sidekick concept at first, but it has a major impact later in the series.

Loved the Oliver-Allen team up though.

Mark finally getting along with Eve has been perfectly built up.

Another masterpiece. These comics are better than DC and Marvel. Knowing anything can happen makes them exciting. Invincible has some plot armor, but I can't say that for any others. I wish I could read faster to reach issue 144!
