Herbert M. Mason, Jr was a WWII veteran of the United States Marine Corp, journalist and military historian. During his lifetime he wrote fourteen books on topics as varied as the rise of the German Luftwaffe to Ants.
Brilliantly written, with moments of suspense and surprising turns of events, faithfully narrating events with proven historicity and in detail (at times a bit excessive) and in a elaborate language (which is dotted with military jargon at times - but not hindering the understanding too much), this book should be read by anyone who has the vaguest interest in history.
Foreword: Literally speaking, the book does not have much merit. Having said that, Nazism, the Holocaust and the Second World War being one of my main fields of interest, I was delighted to read this book, which collects the most important attempts made by the German people to get rid of the man they had, quite improperly, elected to lead them. As in many other texts, it emerges that these attempts came (apart from one case) from within the circle that had access to the dictator. In addition to this, the book contains other interesting information about the society at the time of Hitler's rise to power until his fall.
The question of how could such a madman be allowed to continue his debauchery unchallenged is partially answered. He was challenged... It failed, but he was challenged. I am glad I read the book perhaps because I consider all knowledge gained to be a "good thing". That is the only reason. Glad I am done with it, now how do I shake the disgust of that history from my mind. Will not pick up another Hitler oriented book again...ever.
The book was ok the info was nothing that hasn't been wrote before ,for the price was very good ,I will say that dachau was not an extermination camp to my knowledge . except when occupying American troops shot the young guards who had surrendered.
An unbelievable book with unbelievable research into the many plots to 'end' the Fuehrer's life were made. How was it possible that the plotters often came so close - and never succeeded? Even the brave man who was trying to shoot him and knowing it would be a suicidal act. People, who think all the Germans were Nazis, read this book and learn what really happened! As a child, growing up in a small German village, people became superstitious and would whisper about Adolf Hitler: "Either he has a guardian angel or he has a pact with the devil." Reading this book, I more often than not shook my head and said: "How was this ever possible..."
