With summer ending and temperatures dipping low at night, Michael’s eager to get his leather jacket back, and although Wild Bill could easily vamp any sales clerk into giving Michael some new duds, it wouldn’t be quite the same as the jacket he left at his parents’ house. Not unless the malls have begun selling clothing with Rohypnol and ketamine sewn into the seams.

The return of the jacket comes with a a new cell phone from Michael’s parents. Surprisingly, Wild Bill encourages Michael to keep the phone. After all, Michael wouldn’t want to be the only twenty-one-year-old in the world without one. Seems innocent enough. Right?

But you never know where an innocent gift will lead. Michael worries the phone may be some shiny bait, meant to lure him closer to his family, and then, college. Everyone seems intent on getting Michael to enroll, but he’s busy looking to catch a vampire…

Have I mentioned how much I'm loving this gloriously macabre series?
There was a stranger forty feet away, and a wild vampire in the woods outside. And a goat.
This episode of Channeling Morpheus took me back to everything I love about this series..
Sex,
Blood,
Drugs,
Horror,
Humor,
Vampire Hunting,
Filthy Hotel Rooms,
& this gorgeous Romance between Wild Bill and Michael...

*sigh*

So... we had a meet up with the good Doctor Jim in this episode, and maaaaaaan that guy is creeeeeeepy. *shudders*

The professor working to find a cure for Vampirism calls Michael in for a Vampire hunt in a stretch of farmland not far from the University. Seems like a rogue Vampire picking off the local livestock and leaving behind gruesome scenes.

I realized two things while reading this book:

1.
Every time Michael and Wild Bill come across another Vampire this feeling of dread washes over me. I'm thinking 'Don't you trust that asshole!', I know that's probably leftover heebie jeebies from the horror show co-op in Rebirth, but I can't shake the feeling that it's Bill and Mikey against the world sometimes.

2. It felt really good to get back to hunting vampires - all the action, suspense, blood, and gore that I've come to crave from Channeling Morpheus - it was all there and more.

Plus, I enjoy all the talk about good vs. bad Vampires and the guilt that comes from killing these creatures. Michael pretty much retired from Vamp hunting. He had a series of near misses, fell in love with a sardonic blood sucker, and wound up contracting the vampire virus and becoming an almost-vampire.

The combination of all that gory goodness with the gothly adorable romance and the blazing hot sex? Yes, I'm so in love with this series right now.

Mother of God, the SEX!

The cut was fast. His mouth covered my throat, and he drank. My heart stuttered, then started pumping again in time with Bill's swallows. We were an ocean, Bill and me, and my blood was the tide. And wave after salty wave struck against the shore as I came, if you could call it that, this thing that was probably no more than an orgasm, but felt like a tsunami.
Jordan Castillo Price never fails to deliver delicious sex scenes, but she really outdid herself in this episode.

Perfection!

Well, thank god, this was much better than #6 The One Which I will Not Name!

Uuuuunnnf! Oh, and did I mention this involves ice cubes? *melts* And yes, they do... ;)

Anyway, Michael gets a phone call from Dr.Jim, the vampire researcher from book #4 (I think? Correct me if I'm wrong). He wants help to catch a vampire. plot spoiler --> Wild Bill is a bit reluctant since he is less than fond of Jim (understatement of the year).

Dr.Jim tries once again to tempt Michael to come and work and study with him. He turns seriously creepy and is basically a dick.

Dr.Jim also tells Michael "It's more like you've got a very mild case of the condition thats not going to progress any further."

Michael's answering thought cracked me up:
"Mildly vamped. Was that like being a little bit pregnant?" LOL!

But then Dr.Jim goes and disses Wild Bill and that pissed me off:
"Not now, eh? Not while you're busy mooning over that white trash boy. Fine. Get it out of your system. You'll tire of him soon enough and start thinking about your future."

Gah! Well, fuck you, Jim!

The hunt part was really suspenseful! They used a goat at bait, though.

Ha! Totally Jurassic Park moment.

It could have gone real bad, but a change of heart made a surprise ending. Not telling ;) Too bad it cost Michael what it did, even though he is a vampire. *wince*

Wild Bill takes care of him though, and checks them in to Daisy Chain Inn's honeymoon suite because of the Jacuzzi (and bed, I think) Hehe. Wild Bill saves the day!

Dr. Jim is creepy and reminds me of some kind of vampire Mengele. I don't like that fucker. (Dr. Jim, I mean. Well, and Mengele but that pretty much goes without saying, yeah?) It's not so much what he does, but what he's capable of doing that scares the crap out of me. *shiver*

And, oh yeah, this one's all about trust--how much do Michael and Wild Bill trust each other? Really, how much does Michael trust Wild Bill?

Also there's some sex with ice cubes. Neat.

Who gives a fuck! Dr. Jim: CREEPY MOTHERFUCKER.

I'm going to stare at Spike until I feel better:

Oh, yeah, that's the ticket. *happy sigh*

In this book I strangely felt Bill was difficult to reach. He is affected by what happens around, very much so, but it seemed to me that Michael was so self-absorbed that he wasn't able to read Bill clearly. It's the first time it happens when Michael is narrating, because I usually felt that Bill was more accessible through Michael's eyes than through his own thoughts.

I don't know where Michael stands, it's like he's in denial and I thought Bill would push him to face what's happening, but he's strangely laid back and it's like he's going with the flow, much less assertive than in the previous books.

They're settling in their relationship, they're more making love than having sex, but there's a sort of melancholy around them that makes me sad.

Yummy as always....this series is divinely addictive and succulent.

In this episode we meet weird Dr. Harman again who is trying to cure vampirism. He persuades Michael and Wild Bill to help him capture a feral, mutated vampire. Things happen. There’s a Pygmy goat involved-no, it’s not what you think, get your mind out of the gutter! Michael vamps out. And the sex is as hot as ever—I seriously have a thing for MCs who drink blood during sex. Like I said, succulent...... I love these two together!

I liked Snare much better than the previous book in this series.

There's a lot happening in this one. Doctor Jim is back! Man, is that guy creepy or what. Michael’s sister makes a reappearance! And there’s a dangerous run-in with another vamp! 😱 These boys just can’t stay out of trouble, can they…

Rating for the whole series.

When I was a little girl someone had given me a green book titled First Aid in English. It had little snippets of stories and then grammer exercises. I loved the snippets which where accompanied by line drawings. One of them was the story of a lion hunt in Africa complete with a drawing of a goat tied to a tree as bait for the lion. This one reminded me of that. I have to go and find that book again.

Back to Michael and Bill. This one continues in creating the unfriendly world vibe which has already struck me in this series. But in the midst of such bleakness the bond between Bill & Michael blossoms like a rare flower.

Part of me thinks I should have read something else before reading this one. I think I am still emotionally raw from Brazen and I struggled to enjoy this one. Back to back with nothing in-between might not have been the best idea.

I feel like I am missing something. I can read deep shit with the best of them but some of what I am supposed to be getting from this is going over my head. That isn't to say that I am losing interest or not enjoying the ride because I am. I am fascinated honestly with this Vampire world. It's just, I don't know.

I think aside from the lesson I learned in this one I am not really sure what else I was supposed to get. I am a little disappointed in how it played out with Dr. Death.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have a clearer head and be in a better place.

It all starts with accepting a phone as a gift from Michael's parents...

Michael grabs at the chance to help vamp and mankind, despite Bill's reluctance. Seems simple enough - catch a vamp exhibiting abnormal behavior and Dr. Jim's research progresses exponentially. However things quickly devolve as they see the lengths Dr. Jim will go to.

Bill here, was my hero. The "stakes" are getting higher and I still have a bad feeling about what's to come...

Snare was another story from Michael's POV and, while I have to admit that I like being in Bill's had just a tad bit better, it was good to be privy to Michael's thoughts and feelings again. Because despite of what he did last book, it's clear that he loves and appreciates Wild Bill. The two of them are just such a perfect team.

I'm interested to see where the story is going. JCP just takes this series an extra mile by her overarching sub plots: causes and workings of vampirism, Michael's condition, the effect of further transitions on on our happy couple's future -bit by bit the puzzle pieces are starting to fit together....
Another JCP thing is the somewhat dry and resigned relay of events by the character. It just works for me every time. That and those funny details like the crazy (poor) pygmy goat.
Onto the next one!

Another hot one from Michael's POV! There were ice cubes...and a mirror...although not at the same time!

Of course it was also creepy as HELL and twisted as FUCK!  Bill should have learned by now to stop doing whatever Michael wants because he usually has the dumbest ideas.

Still loving these two!

It takes a really, really good author to suck me in to these depths. I mean, I know these books aren't very long, but they are intense, and if the author couldn't keep the momentum going, then I'm not sure I'd have read them back-to-back. As it is, 'Snare' is book seven and there are only ten books, so I'm coming down to the end. I have sad face.

I thought I'd already told Michael that sometimes, it's too late to go home. But he wanted his leather jacket back that he left there, so… He gets his jacket back, all right, and a cell phone from his mom. The cell phone, inadvertently, gets them returning to the vampire researcher to help him catch a vamp he believes is mutating. If Jim, the researcher, can identify the genes, then he can cure vampirism. Now Wild Bill didn't much like Jim the first time they met, and he hasn't liked him emailing Michael offering him a full-ride scholarship and a lab assistant position. But Wild Bill knows this is important to Michael, so he's along for the ride to help him capture this vamp. And to make sure Jim isn't planning anything hinky.

I know I've said it, and I'll probably keep saying it, but this series is phenomenal. The plots and the writing are riveting and the main characters are simply amazing. I'm not even sure if I can express it very well. Each story, told in a different point of view, brings me closer and closer to Michael and Wild Bill. The interesting thing to note, at least for me, is that even though these characters don't engage in a lot of the romantic love often found in romances, there is no doubt in my mind of the strength of their bond. It's part of the reason I can't seem to put these down. You're awesome, Jordan!

About this Story
Hopefully the Bat Boy reference isn’t too obscure. I trusted that his name was descriptive enough that most people would get the gist even if they weren’t familiar with him. If you’re curious, he does have his own Wikipedia page.

Snare marks the second appearance of Julie, as well as the second appearance of Dr. Jim. When Michael hears that the two of them have been talking about him behind his back, he realizes what a liability his family members could be, and how painfully easy they are for any vampire to simply look up in the phone book. If any “bad guys” come after our main duo, Michael trusts that Wild Bill will be able to take care of himself. But Little Sister? Who doesn’t even believe vampires exist? Or mom? Or dad? Bad news.

Speaking of trust, it occurs to me that trust is the underlying theme of this story. Wild Bill and Michael don’t know Dr. Jim particularly well, and as they see him interact with Bat Boy, Michael realizes he doesn’t trust that Jim won’t vivisect the pathetic vampire. Later, when Michael’s arm needs to be reset, he needs to decide if he can trust Bill to disentangle them from the hairy situation. In fiction, I’m usually not a fan of the protagonist letting someone else handle the heavy lifting, however in this case, Michael made the critical choice of taking down Dr. Jim. The rest is all cleanup work.

Dr. Jim’s Caddy is the third red vampire car. I’m not sure why vamps gravitate toward red cars in Channeling Morpheus. Maybe they look good in the moonlight.

Michael and Wild Bill go back to Michael's home to get his leather jacket. His parents give him a cell phone for "emergencies". The mad professor calls and says he needs Michael's help to capture a rogue vampire. Against Wild Bill's better judgment they go. They help him catch the vampire and turns out to be a Downs Syndrome kid who was turned. They end up attacking the professor who breaks Michael's arm and he starts to vamp out. So they are on the run from the prof (they knew he'd kill the kid so they let him go) and Michael is starting to exhibit more vampire tendencies. I love how each book takes you one step deeper. Lots of steamy sex but just moving the story along and Michael deals with the changes and they deal with their relationship. Love this series.

ANother good one. The development of so many things- the relationship between Bill & Michael; Michael's moral compass in regards to vampire hunting; and the continued growth of Michael's "condition" are all getting very interesting. I'm nervous that there are only 3 books left and there is so much I want to know. That being said, I'm going to take a break from these for a while and come back to them in a bit.

Rating: A

The main plot of Snare concerns a call from Dr Jim Harman, who we met several books before, asking for Michael's help catching a possibly mutant vamp with an unusual diet of animal blood. However, the story wraps itself around far more than this. There are the expected hotter-than-hell sex scenes which Price writes so beautifully, but for me, the main things to catch my attention on this third read-through were the changing relationship between Bill and Michael, and the development in Michael's attitude towards his mild case of vampirism.

Snare is narrated by Michael, and early on we get to see specific instances of how his vamp senses are developing. He now has an extra awareness of people nearby, and has even begun to practice vamping people's minds. It was fascinating to see Michael's mixed feelings about this juxtaposed with his unease at having his sister turn up with his jacket and a phone. He is profoundly uncomfortable to realise that his sister has the hots for Bill, despite her history of being attracted to jocks. Bill later explains this as being just a "vamp thing", but Michael finds it hard to shake the mood.

Bill, as always, uses sex to cheer Michael up, which is interesting in its own way. As readers who have dipped into Bill's head in previous books, we are privileged to a greater insight into Bill's behaviour than Michael himself has. Michael still hasn't realised that his gloomy moods are like catnip to Bill. They make Bill horny, which ends up improving Michael's mood, and thus destroying the vibe Bill was into. It's really fascinating to watch this happen from Michael's perspective, and to realise how much of a mystery Bill remains to him.

Snare takes the two lovers into a few new places for them. A couple of motels that are ever so slightly grander than the back of Bill's van, and a tumbledown trailer in the woods that looks like something from a slasher flick. I love the way that Price preserves the scuzzy vibe through other details, for example, the shopping Michael returns with from the mini-mart:
A bucket of ice. Donuts. Microwave burritos. Two liters of soda for me. A fifth of Jack for Wild Bill. And a pint of blood for the two of us.

This humble list not only made me chuckle, but it's a perfect illustration of the kind of life they're leading. What's more, the component parts of it feature heavily in the following scene. Bill's antics with the ice are not only sexy, but amusing, and I was touched to realise that he's deliberately cheering Michael up, despite it making the experience less intense for himself.

The other really notable thing about Snare is the reappearance of the odious Dr Jim. The scenes featuring all three men crackle with tension, Bill acting like a rebellious teenager, Jim condescending, and Michael desperately trying to keep things from blowing up. I loved seeing how out of place Jim was in the modern world--something highlighted so well by the old-fashioned way he dresses.

Without wanting to give spoilers, it's hard to explain why I love the developments at the end of the story, but Bill has the opportunity to prove himself capable of handling a difficult situation and looking after Michael, and Michael realises just how little his developing case of vampirism bothers Bill. The last scene weaves this acceptance through an intensely erotic scene that I found moving and memorable.

This is longer than the other Channeling Morpheus books so far, but the story is utterly absorbing both in the way it furthers the vampire mythology of the series, and in the deepening relationship between our two protagonists. Yet again, Jordan Castillo Price's writing cast a spell over me, and it's almost impossible to find the right words to express just how wonderful I think this series is. Michael and Wild Bill are two unforgettable characters, and I love both of them in very different ways. Highly recommended - go read!

Call me crazy, or hopelessly romantic, but I feel like Michael and Wild Bill are setting down... they are not yet arrived to decide china patterns, but I will not bet that it couldn't happen.

Some of this feelings arrive from the opening scene, where Michael is remembering some good moments of the past, when he had an home and a family, and this is reinforced when his sister Julie comes to visit, bringing a cell phone Michael's mother wants absolutely his son has with him. This cell phone represents a link with the past, but also a bridge to a possible future... again, call me crazy, but I can see a future for Michael and Wild Bill near Michael's family, a future in which Michael finally starts college and Wild Bill... well I don't know, maybe he will play the housewife.

Anyway it's not only the cell phone that gave me that idea, it's also the sex between Michael and Wild Bill (and yes, only between Michael and Wild Bill, not intruder this time); I don't exactly remember if in the past it was so intimate like this time, I remember it was hot the first time they did IT alone, but this time I could almost feel their bodies, Michael's emotions were bare and Wild Bill seemed gentler and more caring. It was also one of the few time that anything of vampire interferes between them, there was not the urge of feeding, but only the strong pull to be together, as near as possible, more one body than two. I don't know, it was almost like if Michael was more aware of his body, and of the things his lover was doing to his body, and above all he was more aware of who was doing that... Wild Bill was no more only his lover, he was his partner, the half share of a whole they can be only together.

There is also another step in Michael's discovery journey for something even him doesn't know what, but it's not the focus of the story; it's an important detail, probably it bears an important clue for the future books, but I was so entranced by the previous sex scene between Michael and Wild Bill, that I read all the rest of the story in a dazed condition, still lingering with the mind on what has happened just before. If someone reading this series has ever doubted on Michael and Wild Bill's love, reading this book he will dissipate all of them.

I am so in lust with the cover model. His profile is better because his eyes are ever so slightly too close together, but he is so beautiful.

Anyway, on to the writing. At first I didn't like this one as well as most of the others because it started out weakly. I felt the two guys were distant and their love didn't show. At one point I felt that the only way they knew how to show their love was through sex. But it got better and the last quarter was wonderful.

There was some lovely and romantic imagery. For example, Bill says to Michael:

"Just lemme hold you while the sun comes up. You're the silver cord that anchors me in the land of the living while my soul spends the day roaming through hell."

Nit picks: You don't need a credit card to get a cell phone. A Trac-phone, for example, is prepaid and cheap. Yeah, it's creative license, but still. It could have been written, "a couple of hours later...."

The drama/danger at the end was really good. I loved how Bill's love was shown in his actions rather than with him saying it out loud. Sometimes I think he loves Michael more than Michael loves him. I think that's why I prefer the stories told from his perspective. But in this one, Michael actually

I love this series and I'm glad this ended on a romantic and sweet note. They almost all do, but I wasn't sure how romantic this one would be given the first half. But it was good.

First half=2.5 stars, second half = 5 stars, so 3.75 rounded up to 4.

Squeee!! I loved this book! Michael gets a visit from his sister Julie while they are staying in town at a motel. She brings him his leather jacket that he left at his parent's house the last time he was there. She also gives him a cell phone that his mom wants him to have. I didn't want him to keep it because now they can find him no matter where he is.

The first person who calls Michael on his new cell is Dr. Harman, the vamp scientist. I've never liked him. He got Michael's cell number from Julie. Dr. H tells Michael that there is a vampire who is on a killing spree and thinks he mutated because he's been surviving on animal blood. WB and Michael go to Dr. H's and help him capture this vamp with the help of a live goat. Once he's captured, they see he's a mongoloid, not a mutant. He's mentally retarded which is sad and once they realize that Dr. H was going to use this poor vamp as a lab rat, they turn on him. In the process of Michael trying to inject Dr. H with K, Dr. H breaks Michael's arm and Michael vamps out!! His eyes turn red! No good. Eventually, Dr. H passes out and Wild Bill takes care of Michael's arm, let's bat boy loose and gets Dr. H to a safe dark place, but not before taking out a spark plug in his car's engine and keying it. WB also tell's Michael not to freak but his eye teeth have grown. What does this mean? Is Michael now a vampire? Fantastic if he is!!! But he has to get rid of his phone! I don't think Dr. H is done with these two. He's going to wake up pissed and wanting revenge. I worry for their lives.

Michael totally won me back over in this one. And I love that he and wild bill have started to actually communicate more. I loved that bill told Michael exactly why he was uncomfortable going to see the doctor but going anyway, because it seemed like the exact reasoning he'd used in the previous book for the threesome.

And I loved that it seemed like the two of them were back to being a team again.

It's interesting that we got another glimpse of bill still feeling guilty for what he's accidentally done to Michael and being afraid it'll make Michael leave him. While at the same time Michael accepts (even enjoys?) what's happening, but is afraid the changes will freak bill out and make him leave. So here's hoping their communication progress continues!

Review of the whole series:

Ok, the main selling point for me here is the fact that I seriously didn't know where this was going, all the way through to the last installment - because nothing about this - not the characters, the story line, the sex - followed standard genre rules, whether it be erotica, paranormal or m-m.

The sex for example has a peculiar mix of too filthy (literally filthy, not only dirty - that, too) and too profound for erotica, the characters begin to show a psychological depth and ambivalence that you don't usually expect from paranormal and the romance is way too non-formulaic for m-m.

And that mix just makes this wonderful.

I love watching the relationship between Bill and Michael evolving. Each time a little closer, learning each others moods and signals. This was a tough one, which always seems to happen when someone seems to be "horning in" even though Michael's sister is trying not to.

I don't get Jim Harman. He is so deep into researching he is forgeting the "human" factor.

I continue to love this series and each story gets better.

We meet Dr. Jim again. Wild Bill does not trust Dr. Jim. DJ keeps trying to get Michael to work in the lab. He emails and finally calls Michael. WB is surprised that DJ is staying in contact with Michael and that Michael has not mentioned it before this. Dr Jim wants to test Michael. When that is not possible he asks for their help with another oddity. Hunting for someone who is not the "usual" vampire does not go as planned. Michael hunts serial killers but does not see himself as one even after committing multiple murders. Trust is the issue in this story.

Well Micheal does it again and this time it's probably a good thing he did because he and Wild Bill saved a young vamp with a disability, who most likely would have ended up as a lab rat. So even though Michael finds trouble for him and Wild Bill again...I guess it's for the best.
And what is Michael transforming in to....RED eyes???
Can wait to get on to the next story...
Highly Recommend!!

I was a little frustrated with Mikey in this one and his hesitance when the action started , but the more I thought about it...it was true to character. And when the time came he and Bill were on the same page. JCP has done a great job in keeping the story moving along at a good pace while keeping the characters fresh and keeping readers wanting more.

This is told from Michael's POV. I didn't like it quite as much as the others. The emotional aspects between them weren't as strong and the plot was just ok. The sex scenes as usual were smoking hot. These two are always so good together and when you add in ice cubes and mirrored ceilings well yum. Just yum.
