Knowledge in a Social World

Rate this book
Knowledge in a Social World offers a philosophy for the information age. Alvin Goldman explores new frontiers by creating a thoroughgoing social epistemology, moving beyond the traditional focus on solitary knowers. Against the tides of postmodernism and social constructionism Goldman defends the integrity of truth and shows how to promote it by well-designed forms of social interaction. From science to education, from law to democracy, he shows why and how public institutions should seek knowledge-enhancing practices. The result is a bold, timely, and systematic treatment of the philosophical foundations of an information society.

Goldman writes so clear and simple in a way that you could easily follow his argument, even if you wouldn't agree with him; he sticks too much to the notion of 'veritistic' epistemology.

The first chapter alone is dazzling and disarms the barbs of the postmodern critiques of knowledge. A book concerned with epistemology; an activity we are all committed to. A must-read book for it concerns the nature of knowledge and how we can obtain it. Using it for sound methodological grounding for a PhD thesis. Very helpful writing and presentation of ideas with lucid reasons and memorable examples. Vital words are contained in this tome.
