Will they discover who is killing the dogs of Ostia, and why? The Secrets of Vesuvius Flavia is spending the summer with her uncle who lives near Pompeii. She and her friends are absorbed in trying to solve a riddle that may lead to a great treasure. Then Mount Vesuvius erupts and the four children find themselves in desperate danger. The Pirates of Pompeii Following the volcano's eruption, hundreds of refugees from the cities of Vesuvius try to come to terms with disaster. When children begin to go missing from the camp, Flavia Gemina and her friends investigate a powerful and charismatic man known as the Patron and come face to face with pirates, slave-dealers, and death. I have to admit I didn’t have high expectations for this series, but boy was I wrong. This omnibus contains the first 3 books in the series and I was hooked I couldn’t stop reading I loved how this series had accurate ancient history contained so teachers people about history whilst having a thrilling adventure. I did find the characters hard to keep track of at times. But I liked how the series followed on with no jumps so you didn’t feel like you missed anything. I would recommend that everyone reads this book and I will be reading Omnibus II very soon.

I owe a lot to Caroline Lawrence's brilliant Roman Mysteries. Not only were they my favourite books as a child (with exciting story lines, intriguing mysteries and engaging characters), but they also inspired a long standing interest in the ancient world that ultimately led me to study the subject at university. Through her vivid descriptions and masterful story telling Lawrence breathes life into the relics of ancient Rome. Now whenever I study the archaeological remains of Ostia, Rome, Delphi and many other famous sites visited by the four main characters (Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan and Lupus) in the books, they feel familiar and alive rather than distant remains of an ancient empire. Hopefully this enthusiasm I got will also be passed onto many more generations of children. A must for anyone studying the Romans or Latin at school, or for anyone who simply loves unravelling the mysteries of the ancient world.

Awesome for teaching Roman History to 6th graders. They're mysteries that follow a group of kids to different places (at whatever time in the period the particular place was important).. very interesting reads for kids, and it teaches them period vocabulary and relevant facts. Details are accurate. If I were a writer, this is the kind of crap I'd write, because kids need high-interest, accessible, academic text.

Again, LOVE these books (at least the first 5, I haven't read the subsequent 7).

these were my favourite books growing up. only trumped by harry potter for obvious reasons. I lived the mystery with the characters and always felt I could relate to one or more of the main four protagonists. they also fuelled a love of ancient history in me which has never really gone away :) truly scrumptious reads
