Hashiguchi won a newcomer's award in 1987 (published in a magazine), and Combat Teacher debuted the following year in the same magazine.
A prevailing theme seen throughout his manga is the realization of childhood dreams, such as making bread in Yakitate!! Japan or becoming a yo-yo master in Super Yo-Yo (Chousoku Spinner). Hashiguchi mainly focuses on unusual occupations or sports.
He enjoys comedy as well, and took a brief interlude from drawing to try his luck as a comedian.

Love it! I'm having a great time reading this so far. Not only is it entertaining but the way the breads are made/baked are fun too!

The second Yakitate!! Japan volume taps the brakes after a whirlwind first volume. This is probably advised, just from a normal story arc viewpoint, but the first half is a bit of a struggle, leaning heavily on these untranslatable puns rather than the competitive action we get a taste of in the first volume. Luckily that competition angle returns for the second half, so the volume ends on a high note.
Still, its appeal as a love letter to baking, while mixing in humor and strong characters, stands strong. Even if we're missing the genius of the original Japanese puns, the whole tone feels like a lighthearted wink at the reader; it doesn't matter if the identifiable jokes fall flat in English, the characters themselves are funny simply by how they think and act. Even a slower volume like this remains endearing.

I thought the plot of this one was sooooo much stronger than the first book. However, there’s still a lot that I think is just out of place, unnecessarily problematic things- small bits of ableist dialogue, blatant sexualization of the only two young female characters, problematic queer stereotypes, etc.

Kawachi yang selalu dibully (eh, lebih tepatnya sih agak-agak sial gitu) dan pegawai rambut aneh (lupa namanya) yang selalu terlupakan itu bikin ngakak. Hahaha..

And so the rivalry of Pantasia with St. Pierre has started. And for now, rookies Kazuma and Kawachi has tied up with the manager from St. Pierre with their Japan#7 - a bread made from leftover or trimmings from old bread.
In addition, a background history for this rivalry was also mentioned on a few chapters.
It is exciting that an elimination type competition for Pantasia’s newcomers is also happening on the next volume.

This is a pretty decent cooking manga, it was really good and interesting at the beginning but got bored the second half probably because it’s solely just about bread 😂👌❤️

Yakitate!! Japan, Volume 2 will make you laugh with its goofy humor and over-the-top characters. This volume follows Kazuma and company as they compete in a bread-off with rivalry bakery, St. Pierre, managed by the flamboyant manager, Tsuyoshi Moyoyama. The mysterious general manager of the Pantasia main store, Meister Kirisaki, makes a rare appearance to check in on the competition. I hope that Kirisaki shows up more because it'd be nice to have some eye-candy along with all this food porn.
After the televised competition, a little boy approaches Kazuma and they share a moment that reminds me of the relationship between Naruto and Konohamaru. Kazuma is such a likable character. It's a heartwarming moment AND we get our very first recipe, so there's all kinds of warm fuzzy feelings going on.
At the end of the volume, the gang receives a draft notice to participate in the Pantasia Rookie Tournament. When Kawachi becomes filled with doubt about his abilities, Tsukino agrees to help him obtain the Hands of the Sun. Kawachi's heartbreaking backstory makes me want to cheer him on.
Following Kazuma's quest for the perfect Ja-Pan, this series will teach you things you may never have known about this carby delight. Prepare for lessons in goat's milk, mycotoxins, and rice-cooker baking! This series have you drooling!
Bonus points for Kazuma's sister skidding in on her knee to bring Kazuma his needed ingredient!

I remember watching the anime and thinking it was silly but okay, but for some reason the manga rubs me the wrong way. I don't know if the fact that several of my favourite (Japanese) voice actors are in the anime, or if animation helps the humour (or if my taste has just improved/become less tolerant of stale jokes), but I didn't really like reading as much as watching.
That said, this volume has a REAL recipe in it, rather than exclusively made-up horrors unreplicable in real life, so I've adjusted accordingly (possibly unfairly, but I also just noticed that Goodreads skews the rating system more positively than I would).
The things I don't like are how the "scary lifeguard" appears to wave his Speedo-covered... parts... at Kawachi, Mokoyama appears to be huge but curiously effeminate as a "joke" (this is even worse in the anime), and the bonus part where Tsukino finds a kitten in the shop... that steals her bra WHILE SHE IS WEARING IT and runs off with it so she exposes herself to Azuma and Kawachi. Really kind of tired of sex/sexual identity treated as a cheap punchline.

We meet the manager and he is...the crazy uncle with all the bad puns. Just...this volume is 20% bad puns. But! We also meet a strange mystery man and meet our #1 business rival. Huzzah for new characters!

This volume features a cute contest against Pantasia's biggest rivals, St. Pierre. Still a light fluffy read that was highly enjoyable.

This manga series about breadmaking is a light, fun read with pretty outrageous characters and situations.

What a great read, I marvelled over the fact that Azuma's ideas for bread never ends. It has expanded so much. I'll be looking forward to seeing what happens next.
