In this book Steven Seidman, Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany, makes the case that gays and lesbians are living beyond the closet. He makes a sharp distinction between a pre-Stonewall and post-Stonewall narrative for coming out effectively attempting to diminish the weight of the closet in a world that has increasing levels of gay visibility, and more legal protections.

An interesting perspective on coming out as a social rather than personal experience.
