Ik vond het magisch realistische in dit boek echt leuk gedaan. Het is een fantasierijk verhaal en gaf iets dromerigs. Ook het kunstthema sprak me aan. Ik heb zelf niet zoveel met kunst, maar juist daardoor was het interessant om er meer over te lezen en er wat van op te steken.

Halverwege heb ik het boek even weggelegd, want ik had behoefte aan iets anders en zat er niet helemaal meer in. Maar toen ik het later weer oppakte, zat ik er weer helemaal in en kon ik het niet meer wegleggen.

De sfeer in de verschillende tijden voor ik goed beschreven en ik zag het allemaal zo voor me. Voor mij een gezellig (en schattig) feelgood boek; ik geeft het 3,5 ster.

Het vervolg heb ik besteld omdat ik benieuwd ben hoe het verder gaat!

Lydia's Secret has been described as Sophie's World about art history. I really enjoyed Sophie's World, so the comparisson made me curious about this book as well. While reading this book I definitely noticed some similarities between the two books, both have a curious Swedish girl as the main character and both books are fiction but include information on a certain topic. However, there are also some differences. Lydia's Secret focusses more on the adventure Lydia is having and the magical aspect to it, whereas in Sophie's World the deliverance of information on philosophy is more prominent. This makes Lydia's Secret accesible for a younger audience, since the educational aspect is not too prominent. The book also reminded me a little of Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, where things can escape from books and can enter them, and Crusade in Jeans by Thea Beckman, where a boy travels back in time and accidently ends up in the time of the crusades.
From every painter Lydia meets you learn what age he lived in, what kind of life he lead, distinct personality traits and some aspects of his paintings that stand out. Personally I'm fascinated by Leonardo da Vinci, so I would have loved to read a little more about him, but for others who might not be as interested the amount of information might have been enough. I think overal there was a nice balance between information and entertainment.The painters only appeared in the book for a short while, but they definitely had distinct personalities. Almost all of the painters immediately take Lydia with them eventhough they hardly know her, and this was the only part of the book that felt a little unrealistic. When she wore strange clothes and said she was from the future I would have thought that the painters would think her truely crazy, but instead they were all easily convinced she wasn't that crazy after all.
I think Lydia's character could have been a little more well-rounded, because I still feel like all I know about her is that she loves to draw and loves her grandfather, but I did like the relationship she had with her grandfather and how adventurous the story was.
Lydia travels to the time of a certain painter by touching one of his paintings. At first it seemed a little cliché, but when it was mentioned that because of this she could only travel backwards in time (because at a certain time she can only encounter paintings that have been painted before that time) I truely felt like the author really thought the traveling in time trough.

'Ik probeer te denken als een gek, maar ik ben niet gek'

Dit boek werd mij voorgelezen in groep 7. Na bijna 15 jaar herinner ik me dit nog steeds en wilde ik het echt graag opnieuw lezen.
De manier waarop je op een speelse manier te maken krijgt met kunst vind ik geweldig. Ookal heb je geen enkele kennis, krijg je op deze manier een makkelijke kunstles over verschillende groot meesters en ook een kijkje in die tijd. Het gaat over een 12 jarig meisje dus het is zeker voorgekomen dat ik het ergens kinderachtig vond maar de essentie van het verhaal komt goed over. Na 15 jaar vind ik dit verhaal nog steeds goed en iedereen die enkele interesse in kunst en fictie heeft zou ik dit boek dan ook aanraden.

Als je op de cover zet 'De wereld van Sophie voor de kunstgeschiedenis', dan zijn de verwachtingen bijzonder hoog. Ik vreesde al een beetje dat het niet zo mocht zijn. Behalve dat ik het niet goed geschreven vind (voorspelbaar en door de verteller afgedwongen gebeurtenissen) struikelde ik over historische onjuistheden. Aardappels in de tijd van Rembrandt? Helaas. Die werden pas na zijn tijd echt bekend bij het volk als voedsel. En serieus...de zoon van Rembrandt trok kaplaarzen aan?
Of is hier sprake van een slechte vertaling? Hoe dan ook, ik ben afgehaakt.

Na meer dan 10 jaar mijn lievelingsboek herlezen. Nog even fantasievol en wonderlijk om te lezen als de eerste keer.

Een grappig kinderboek voor meisjes en jongens die veel van kunst houden. Ik snap de vergelijking wel met sophie's wereld. Maar die is toch nog steeds stukken beter. Het boek leest heerlijk weg, maar het is nogal wat raar hoe dit opeens kan gebeuren. Maar gelukkig hebben jonge kinderen dat minder, dit is dus gewoon niet een boek wat je in je twintiger jaren nog moet lezen :)Vooral de verschillende verhaallijnen die niet af werden gemaakt stond mij tegen. Julia bezoekt allerlei kunstenaars, schilders door de eeuwen heen. Maar daar ontmoet ze natuurlijk mensen en daar beleeft ze avonturen mee, maar hoe loopt het af met iedereen?

Dus helaas niet helemaal het boek voor mij maar ik begrijp wel waarom het het kinderboek van het jaar is geweest! Voor kinderen die into kunst zijn helemaal goed. Geschiedenis overigens ook!

Leuk detail: de schilderijen staan zowel voorin als achterin het boek dus daar kun je gemakkelijk naar terug kijken

An entertaining young-adult book about a twelve year old Swedish girl with a perculiar talent: if she touches a painting she is pullws into it and awakes in the age when the painting was created. She meets the artist and most of the times she becomes a pupil.
Before she starts her journey through the period's of art she meets with a strange looking guy: a bird-man. He gives her a pill box with tiny tablets. Those tablets will help her to understand and speak the different languages of the countries and ages she is travelling.

It's a nice read and I'm looking forward reading the two other parts in the series

Aardig boek over een 12 jarig meisje, Julia, dat tijdens een bezoek aan het Nationaal Museum in Stockholm verdwijnt. Wat is er met haar gebeurd? Waar is ze gebleven?
In dit boek wordt op een leuke manier beschreven hoe ze door de tijd reist. Helaas blijft het wat oppervlakkig.

2.75/5 | Ik had dit boek een paar jaar geleden gelezen en ik herinnerde mij dat ik het een super leuk boek vond; ik gaf het toen denk een dikke 4 sterren. Een paar weken geleden zag ik dat er 2 vervolg boeken waren en dus besloot ik om dit boek te herlezen om zo de twee andere boeken in de serie te lezen.

Het komt hoogstwaarschijnlijk omdat tussen de leesmomenten mijn leeservaring en -smaak erg zijn veranderd dat ik het boek nu minder leuk vindt. Ook wist ik het verhaal wel (alle de details niet meer), dus het was ook niet meer spannend.

Ik zit ook te twijfelen om nog de 2 andere boeken te lezen; ik had het zeker gedaan als ik van de boeken wist bij het eerste keer lezen.

Bra kapitelbok att läsa tillsammans med sitt barn. Lagom spännande och lärande, Lydia reser i tiden och träffar kända konstnärer och man kan gå ut på nätet och titta på deras tavlor som nämns i boken.

I loved the exploration of the magic of art, and the brief introductions to various artists and their characters. I was a little bit disappointed with the 'plot' and the depth of the characters of the artists, but since it is a children's book, I think that is not a big issue.
