In 1815 a hurricane devastated Rhode Island including the wooden light house at Point Judith. This is the fictional story of this event. Most of the island was evacuated, but the lighthouse keeper's daughter, after her father was injured and evacuated, continued to maintain the lighthouse and then a bonfire for those still out at sea.
Franklin writes a wonderful retelling of this incredible experience and brings it to life. Definitely and enjoyable historic read.
I really wasn't that impressed with this story. Yes, it was a very short and somewhat entertaining read, but I couldn't bring myself to care about the characters or their daily struggles. I believe that the great storm that was mentioned in the book was actually a tropical storm or even a hurricane, but it was only a passing concern for me. While I didn't hate the book outright, I honestly can't recommend it to others.
