Never split the party. It's the adventurer's first rule of survival. But somehow my jaguar and vampire are off on their own journey, and I miss them like crazy.
Still, Tomas, Ben, and I make a formidable team as we fight through malice, mayhem, and... demon uprisings? I uncover ancient enemies, wild-magic, and new allies while visiting the vampire courts and shifter packs of Europe but the more answers we find, the more complicated things become. What began as a quest to bring my brother home has become so much more and these people have become everything to me.

I guess she's just going to be a one click author for me, too, now. Why does Sarah write my personal brand of heroin? *cue sparkles* I am itching for the next book.
Courting Death: The House of Marchese Saga, Book Two by Sarah Reynolds is a paranormal romance. It is a why choose, reverse harem with shifters, vampires, blood bonds and fated mates. I was so excited to jump into this book after book 1 which I loved. Of course I enjoyed this one just as much. Sarah Reynolds continues to expand on her fabulous world building skills in this novel. Once I start reading I feel like I am right there with the characters. The plot thickens as they search for Sunday‘s brother. Sunday is a wonderful FML because she is so real. She is independent but dependent. Her relationships are fascinating and I love how complicated and interconnecting they are. Again if you like paranormal romance mystery novels definitely give this book and series a chance. I am so glad I did. Next up Book 3!
So good, I read it twice ;) (But no, really. I was a beta reader for this beaut and not-so-subtly batted my eyes at Sarah to also get an ARC copy to read the final version!)
Where to start? I guess I should probably warn y’all that this second installment of The House of Marchese saga is a great deal darker than the first one. I wouldn't class it as dark romance because there is nothing dark about Sunday or her mates, or the way they treat her -- this book is ALL about consent just like the first one -- but there are darker themes (such as starting the book all by the villain of course) and SO much going on, nearly non-stop action.
The pacing was fast but once again so well done, IMO, that you don't feel like it's too fast and you're missing things but definitely fast enough that you don't want to put the book down because you feel like they're going to keep going without you lol. And yes, it IS that immersive. Sarah's writing has this pull to it that makes it so easy to feel like you're there with Sunday and her mates rather than looking in on their world from our own. It's one of my favorite parts of her writing style. The other favorite part being the characters.
If you're like me and you're more interested in what the characters are doing, how they're interacting, and how they're growing individually then Sarah's work is for you. She's amazing at the overall plot stuff too but I could gush all day about her incredible characters. I'm trying to keep this Spoiler-Lite (because let's be real, spoiler free is NOT my strong suit) so I'll have to keep my gushing to a minimum but Sunday... man, Sunday REALLY comes into her own in Courting Death.
She's already this incredible, strong, sassy, witty, but also vulnerable, soft, caring, empathetic badass in Cheating Death but she's been thrown into this secret supe world with all these new beings and new rules, new dangers and she takes it all in stride with the help of her mates. Book 1 ends kind of on a doozy where she's separated from half of her mate group and there is no quick and easy resolution to that. Instead, she has to deal with those emotions of abandonment & worry, put on a brave face, and keep on pushing through some really big supe-related surprises... but behind closed doors, she's allowed to be a bit of a hot mess with Ben & Tomas and I loved that. I loved that she was able to be a mess and they were able to care for her, to help her the way mates should (whether Tomas believes he's one or not lol) and that those vulnerable moments also lead to some really spicy ones!
I will say not all of the spicy stuff is my forte but Sarah writes it well. And even if it wasn't entirely for me I still loved how the characters interacted because it's not JUST smut, it adds to their relationships, their bonds. Things with X & Gray develop in some really interesting ways (read: I was either laughing or squeeing for a good bit of their interactions), Ben was a constant Good ™ in Sunday's life even when he was in his own head, and things with Tomas finally go in the direction I was hoping for lol. I'll leave it at that but know their character arcs are just as important and incredible; and that picking quotes for my Booksta post was even HARDER this time because they all said so many good lines... 🥲😅
We meet some really cool supporting characters in Book Two I'm really excited to see how they'll tie in later, and if they'll be getting their own stories >.> Even if they're just shorts in a newsletter or something... 😬 ANYWAY. Sorry this got long (again) but I really enjoyed this book, and I'm very invested in this series, and I think everyone that likes vampires, shifters, and a good poly romance should read it! ♥️
This author has constantly surprised me in the best possible way. This world she has created is a place I love to get lost in. I love Sundays personality, and it's definitely one I can relate to on many levels.
In this next book, we get some questions answered and also get a whole lot of more questions. But in a good way. There are so many threads, and it leaves me excited to read the next book in the series and hopeful for many more spin-offs because, like I said, this world is everything. We meet some more interesting characters and get to see more into the shifter and vampire worlds. And if you asked me to pick a favorite, I would be unable to, because I love them all.
The spice level in this one is to me about a 4 out of 5. It flows well in the story and doesn't take from the plot but adds to it. But I will say the end took my heart on one hell of an emotional roller coaster. I'm already ready for the next book.
I got an advanced copy of this book as an ARC for my honest review, and honestly, I feel like I should have had to pay the author because this book was just as addicting as book one. Give me more, Sarah ... I need more!!!!
I wish i enjoyed this book as enthusiasticaly as everyone else, becaus while I did enjoy it, I have just as many mixed feelings as I did reading the first. Deciding between 3 and 4 stars was honestly very hard.
Starting off with what I like; I enjoy the humor in the book and I genuinley love Sunny and her determination. Tommy sinks more into the role of caring "Daddy wolf" here and it was delightful (and hot) to read. We also saw some more relationship developmemt and things seem to be moving in a good direction. The author also gives us a recap of the first book in the beginning, something I didn't need as I was able to go from one to the next, but something I really wish for authors would do as sometimes the wait for the next book to come out can be brutal on the memory. Finally, i was never bored. Despite my complaints the plot and world building are really quite interesting and Im excited to read the nect book.
Now to the things that bugged me enough to dock 2 stars; right away this book lets you know its going to be darker than the first as the beginning breaks your heart a little bit in a way that, I personally thought, wasn't really neccessary for the plot. That's more a me issue though and the fact that I get attached to characters at the speed of light.
My next issue though is the pacing, we have so much happen, yet so little at the same time. Time wise I'm pretty sure its been less than a week since our characters first met. Plot wise, we don't actually move forward all that much to the ultimate goal and things that I thought would take more priority really didn't. I had the same feeling of a disjointed plot as I did with the first as everytime I got intrugued and thought we might be making progress we were either hit with a POV switch to see what the other half of the group was doing, or we got a long sex scene instead. Which, while enjoyable to read, did seem ill timed at certain points. While I can see the plot need to have Grayson and Xavier seperated from the other three, it does make it feel almost like skipping between two different books and means theres little-to-no relationship progress between them and the others. It was also very frustrating at times when the ML's act in ways that simply aren't likeable or make extremely stupid decisions without stopping for a second to think, such as swearing an oath on a magical fae book without understanding what that means ☠️
The last thing that bugs me is actually an issue that I also saw in book one, this time with a different character. The author seems to have a think for describing characters as young, this time specifically a new character is repeteadetly described as 14/16. They are much older than that in reality, but when its emphasized that someone looks young and then it's kind of hint that Wade, the middle aged father of 4 kids, is looking at them with possible romantic interest it just feels so icky. I'm not sure if it will be pursued in future books and I actually like Wade a lot, but with Xavier aslo being described as looking young, or barely an adult in the last book it just feels like an uneccesary pattern.
That wae a lot of complaints but I think that the things you don't like tend to stick out to you more than what do like. In the end I'm still going to read the next book and I have no current plans of dropping the series, I'm just having a hard time fully enjoying it, however my brain is also the type to notice every typo and error in a book. If you're a more relaxed reader who doesn't overthink as much I can see this being a 5 star read.
These books are so well written, the characters have a great realism and you feel everything for them because you're so drawn in. Interesting plot, great pacing, and genuine disappointment when you reach the end because you just want more! Can't wait for the next book!
This was a really enjoyable RH/Why Choose paranormal book. When it comes to RH there seem to be a lot of common themes and tropes, and I really loved that this one had different spins on almost all of those commonalities, while still being recognizable enough that you never really felt too out of the loop, even while learning new things about new brands of supernatural creatures. There’s a good amount of diversity both within the love interests backgrounds, and their specific brands of supernatural, which definitely stops things from being too flat footed. There’s a lot of mystery and action in these books, and while the MC is a total badass - she does it while still being soft — literally, and figuratively. She’s allowed to have moments of weakness and worry, anxiety and fear, and still overcome all of her obstacles with the help of those around her. No brooding lone wolf with one knife and a helluva chip on her shoulder here. ^.~ She’s allowed to be soft, and maternal, and stern, and bratty. I really enjoyed reading a strong fmc portrayed in such a way. Everything happens very fast in the books, but the pacing is really good, nothing feels too shallow or skipped over, and the switched POV really helps bring the story forward and makes you want to keep reading. Honestly, its a bit like an underwater current. Once you get deep enough, you get sucked in and just keep wooshing along, only to resurface in reality a little confused by the shock later LOL
The content and trigger warnings are clearly listed and written out, which is a MAJOR plus for me, and I really loved. Almost all of the erotic scenes lean towards degradation, which is outlined in the forward with the content warnings. For me, it’s not my cup of tea, but they were done well and interspersed fairly naturally and not too oversaturated. Still, since every scene was like that, I didn’t find it as enjoyable for my tastes, which is why I rated 4 stars. The characters are well written and well rounded - and you can see a lot of different character growths, which I enjoyed. There’s always a bigger scene at play than what you’re seeing, which lends to a lot of mystery and theories on the world. Even at book two, it’s obvious neither you nor the FMC knows enough about the mechanics of the world, and interesting story changing things are constantly being revealed that color things differently. I ADORE the character dynamics and how each one plays with and interacts with the others. There’s definitely no cut and paste romance or love interests here. (You ever read a RH where 3 guys are basically the same, just with different hair cuts or colors, and one uses one less syllable per word, and one uses more than necessary? That is not this book. Thank god.)
Courting Death continues to follow Sunday and her men as they split up and follow their own journeys. This book has two separate main plot lines that it follows after the characters temporarily (hopefully) separated at the end of the last book. I liked that Xavier got to grow as a character in this book and by the end of the book I feel that he had probably aged a few years mentally compared to where he was at the beginning of the book. I also loved that Sunday seemed to really fit into her position as fiancé to Grayson, as well as navigating being a mate and also other romantic relationships and I feel that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the next book. I also liked in essence having the two storyline plots in this book, it helped moved the story along in general and kept the book interesting. And the ending was just fantastic, I’m glad that I’ve found this series quite close to the release of the next book and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Overall, this was a great second instalment in this series, this book is an addictive and page turning read and I would recommend giving a look at.
POV: Multi Perspective: First Person Pace: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Courting Death is the second book in The House Of Marchese Saga by Sarah Reynolds.
💜 found family 💜 demons, shifters, vampires, oh my 💜 mysteries 💜 forced proximity 💜 🌶🌶🌶🌶 spice
We pick right up where the last book left off. Sunday is still trying to figure everything out. She just now has to deal with extra feelings not only hers but others too. Grayson is also having to deal with new emotions and choices that he must make. Will things work out? Will Sunday be able to help her brother? Will Grayson be able to figure everything out?
Holy crap on a cracker, Batman. This book is one heck of a crazy ride. There are so many moving parts and players within this world. There are also so many mysteries that have yet to be revealed. I love the found family aspect and I can’t wait to see how that all unfolds. This book ends on a cliffhanger that left me craving more. I am going to head off and get started on the next book.
Amazing Read Mind blown First I absolutely loved that the book started as a tecap of the previous book! This brought me right back into the flow which was amazing! The characters in this book are amazing and so well developed. I absolutely loved Sunday from the begginjng and as the book progressed my admiration for her grew. Absolutely love how Thomas calls her trouble!!! As book progressed I feel in love with both Ben and Thomas. I loved how well there was a ton going on, but it all intertwined together well so i could understand it easily! Loved the paranormal aspect as well and that was also done super well! This is so well written! Now for the spicy part of this book it was top tier! I couldn't put this book down! I loved the consent part intertwined in it as well. Cannot wait to read next book! I will definitely be recommending this book to friends and family!
I can't get enough of Sarah's world building, plot and characters. I already fell in love with Sunday and her men in book one but in this one, there's so much more to unpack. I love Sunday's family (minus JoAnne), the twins, her father, her aunt and the new uncle... I'm so looking forward to meet Colt. Also, I'm really liking all the new characters: Aunt Cady, Sandoval, Hudson, Faris, Valentine, Vigil, Franny... I'm intrigued by them so I hope we see more of them in the future books.
So much happen in this installment and I might need to reread a few times because it's that good. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite series ever.
Highly recommend if you love good plots, deep characters (specially a funny & charming FMC) with high level of spicy, great storyline, action pack, paranormal, inclusivity, fantastic world building and more than a few twists.
I got this book as an ARC and I was floored, I hadn’t read anything by the author previously so I quickly went and binged the first book and then this one. So good!
The style of writing is really good, it’s fast paced but keeps you engaged and enthralled, it doesn’t become a blur of reading that doesn’t stick which often happens with fast paced books. This was very well paced.
I loved the world building and there is just so much to it that it’s a really great experience to visualize it all. The character really dynamic and real, showing growth and change that doesn’t read as false at all. It’s a why choose which happen to be some of my favourite books. I just really enjoyed this experience and now I need more from this world!
Don’t get me wrong I love this book, but there was a lot of confusing conundrums, it was a bit all over the place and the two direction split made things very back and forth. I wasn’t a fan of that. I respect and admire the openness to this authors non-gender pronouns but it continues to be confusing with all the they/them. I’m sorry but it’s plural. If you don’t want to genderize then call the character by name at all times. Switch it up so it doesn’t get old. The constant they is so confusing especially when this POV changes frequently. I just didn’t feel like it did this book any favors. I did feel like there were more moments where I needed this book to get to the point… I wish it would’ve.
And yes the pc pronoun use of they them for xavier was annoying as fuck and spoilt that section of the book every time, because often times you dont know if its x they're talking about or some others and that's the problem with the stupid pronoun usage for a single person when it means plural, its confusing and imprecise. Sorry I dont like it and I really don't like trying to read a book with it in. A good example is an incident when gray is talking about someone entering his room, he says they. You think its someone to harm him but its xav. Ridiculous
I won't read a book with this pronoun usage in future it just kicks you out of the story constantly and is so unnecessary.
This book starts off with a bang, though the it takes the FMC and the shifters a bit to understand what happened with the cliffhanger from the prior book. Lots of new characters are introduced and the vampire political structure becomes a major plot point that is really well done. All of the characters have incredible depth and you grow to love them! Lots of action throughout!
What I loved the most though, was the humor sprinkled in throughout the book! The references to song lyrics and 🍆 times where hilarious! Also the FMC is so open and accepting. This and book one are some of my favorite reads of this year!
This book is an amazing addition to the series and I am so excited to have the journey continue. The characters are so….HUMAN, so real. I mean they aren’t human but still. The sass has hit all new levels and it makes me so happy. Sunday is a true badass and the relationships are simply glorious. The spicy scenes are absolutely drool worthy that stir heat like hell's personal heating service! The journey is heart wrenching, soul tearing, and yet so very very rewarding. Sarah, you have created a masterpiece yet again. Please look upon your creation with pride and know you have at least one devoted fan who is so excited to continue on this amazing path that you have set before us. Thank you!
I can not get enough of these characters or the story. This book is a little different as it is following two storylines at once. I know this may bother some people, but I believe it is important to the overarching story. These two stories need to unfold to mesh everything together.
There are relationships building on both sides, and I know in the third book it will all come together.
Looking forward to seeing where this story and these characters go.
Excuse me while I scream into the void about this book. I'm so addicted to this series its unfair. Sunday and her ever growing mate group are back and better than ever. Gray and Shadow are trying to protect them by making bad decisions, and Sunday is discovering her own power literally and figuratively. She will save everyone and change the world, one problem at a time. I am fiending for book three. Read this and come scream with me.
Who and what is Sunday... Gray and X are off courting death with Grays insane vindictive sister. Sunday is dealing with not only being abandoned for her own safety but dealing with other shifters and vampires that are wondering how they can use her to their advantage. Luckily she has her two men by her side wholly devoted to her.
The world Sarah is building is rich and fascinating. The steam is hot quirky and a little dark.
Oh my gosh this was so jam packet with action and some spicy time that I am totally addicted and am craving more and more. The depth of even the side characters the art history the embellished descriptions of clothing the landscape the architecture I felt a part of their world I am in love with it all even the dark horrible parts too! Ooh so excited for book 3! Thank you Sarah!
Great mystery and action story! Sunday is my favorite I can relate to her personality in a way. The storyline was amazing I had to read the first book Cheating Death before I read this book as I got as an ARC book but it was totally worth it. Sarah Reynolds way of writing is different she keeps you entertained and that’s the kind of stories I love to read. It’s an action pack, paranormal and mystery story and it was one heck of a ride. Can’t wait for more.
I received this book as an ARC and am so excited I had the privilege! This book series becomes more and more addicting as it continues. I love the positive vibes from our bonded and the support they give each other. The transitions back and forth from characters keeps you baited and ready to find out what is happening to the groups as they’re separated. I’m anxiously awaiting book three!
Ugh DNF 80%. I knew going in there would be some amount of degradation but it really wasn't for me 😕 I can't take the "use me like an object" type of thing.... I also didn't like the characters being separated for a whole book
Honorable mention for Wade's really cool synesthesia probability power. I'd read a book about him
Book 2, oh wow, Sarah does not dissappoiunt in book, and lets be honest why would she going by book 1.
Good flowing book which i expected and good spice, this book makes you want more. Sarah is fantastic with intigrating our characters and develiping them, that makes you fall in love with them. As always book 2 develops but not in a bad way. Love it.
“You should pick a safe word." "Meatloaf." They pause. "Because you would do anything for love?" "But I won't do that."
"Baby, be careful, you be ready to shift into the biggest scariest creature in your Pokedex if you have to. Okay? Like a Crocodile or a giant squid." "My Pokedex?" | yell back over my shoulder. "We're gonna have to discuss that one later."
Dnf 74% I found I was skipping ahead trying to find the story. Only a week has passed since the beginning of the series. I wish there was more relationship building than sexy times (personal preference). The main characters are apart for most of the book. I just lost interest waiting for something to happen.
I need the next book more that X needs venom 😭😭😭 Anyways I need queen dusty to die epically in the next book please I’d rather re watch king Geoffrey in all his glory than read anymore about this Dusty mutt
This series isn't like others I usually read, but that didn't stop me from staying up all night reading. This is the second book of the series and I'm thoroughly invested.
I am OBSESSED!! In this 2nd book new bonds are formed and the current bonds were made stronger. Sunday’s discovering new powers…there’s Lots of action as well as humor. The plot & spice definitely thickened!! I’m sooo ready for book 3!
I'm really loving this series! The writing is just so fun and the dialogue keeps you on your toes. Each character feels like they are their own person and I just love how real their struggles are. The storyline is exciting as well and I can't wait to see what happens next!
