Jingle around the Block: A Lesbian Christmas Romance

Rate this book
The first encounter between Charlie and Rachel ended Charlie’s marriage.

CHARLOTTE NORRIS is used to the comforts of suburbia. She knows Rachel from neighborhood block parties, and not in a good way. After the fateful day where Rachel exposed Charlie’s husband as a cheater, Charlie has to throw the neighborhood Christmas party alone, and the pressure’s on.

RACHEL NELSON can’t seem to find any luck in love, especially not in winter, where romance goes to die. She’s bitter about moving back to Lake Ridge, the suburban hometown that spat her lesbian ass out the second she turned 18, and she can hardly even afford the rental house from which she streams video games for side cash.

When fate puts the two women together again, things could get explosive—especially as Rachel is a target of gossip to the other Lake Ridge housewives. Charlie’s determined to get Rachel into the in group, though, even if it means forcing her to come to their very opinionated book club…

Their luck may be about to change.

Two unlikely personalities clash in this rich girl/poor girl lesbian Christmas romance about sapphic media and deserving that elusive happy ending.

Rachel Nelson can't seem to catch a break. She figures this Christmas will probably be as crappy as the previous ones. Her love life sucks, she has a depressing job and barely scrapes by. Rough around the edges, tattooed and openly lesbian, she is often the butt of jokes and gossip from the town's ladies of leisure. Charlotte/Charlie Norris fills her days with a book club, shopping and sharing custody of son Aiden. She is struggling to get over Bill's betrayal/affair but puts on a brave face. Well, that was until a meltdown in the local supermarket after seeing her ex with his much younger lover.
Our lead characters met when Rachel exposed Charlie's husband's affair. They reconnect after Rachel witnesses Charlie's supermarket debacle and pays for her abandoned groceries.
Days and incidents pass including Charlie's full acceptance of her bi-sexuality. Rachel is always there when Charlie needs help and that leads the two neighbors to friendship then more. There's a steady working through and understanding of both Charlie's and Rachel's sexuality. Lisa and Maria stand out in the supporting cast along with Charlie's son Aiden.
Kirsch's storyline has humor, touches of angst, a book club, drag queens, sex and romance.
What the heck, I quite liked this Christmas themed romance between two totally different people and read without stopping to the HEA. I look forward to reading more of Kirsch's work.

I rec'd a copy through Booksprout. My review is unbiased and voluntary.

“It’s easy to push people away. It’s so very hard to get them back.”

3.5 stars. I waffled a lot on this at first, but in the end I really came around to it. I really wanted just a bit more length out of this book and a little more character interaction, but the characters are just so perfectly suited to what I love to read about, and it made for a really lovely holiday romance. Charlie and Rachel have been neighbours for years, but they only interact socially. In May, Rachel lets Charlie know about Charlie's husband's infidelity, and then we skip forward to December where their romance starts to develop and blossom. I really liked both protags. They're both prickly and don't know how to manage their emotions effectively, and I will never not love reading about prickly women. They clash in a lot of ways and don't particularly like one another, but they start to realise how suited they are for each other.

The book almost lost me when Charlie started developing feelings for Rachel. I expected the book to be a bit more slow burn than this, and I don't know if it's just me, but when her thoughts turn from antagonism to romance, it just seemed a bit abrupt. But it eventually really sold me on the relationship. When it gets steamy, it's so good and swoony. Rachel is so lovely in an understated way, and I love that she is so kind and caring, even towards people who might not deserve it. Her side job as a streamer was also really cool. I liked reading about those aspects of her life, and how Charlie tried to get into it. I liked all the Christmas activities, going to the market, the book club, and especially all the little details of Charlie's life as a mother and a housewife after her divorce. They've known each other for years, though not very closely, and that helped this not feel as insta love as it might have in other circumstances. This also had a lot of references, which I usually find annoying, but this was mostly video games and movies and books I like, and the author didn't go too overboard with it.

I just really wish Bill had got what was coming to him. My heart really went out to Charlie in certain moments, and he just really needed to get put down.

This was a really good debut! I hope to read more from this author.

Content warnings:

‘Please trap me,’ Rachel wanted to say. No one had wanted her like this before.

I absolutely loved this book, the characters were so real, not all “lovey dovey”. Too often you read books that have goody, moralistic, politically correct characters but this portrayed people who gossiped, said one thing to each other’s faces and something else behind their backs. Even the main characters didn’t say and do the right things all the time. You really felt the small town community spirit, good and bad. It was all so true to how we really are. I did not warm to Rachel to start with but was totally in love with her by the end. I have not read anything by Serena Kirsch before but will be looking out for more from them.

A cheery seasonal story.
I found this to be a happy and fun book. It’s not your usual over-sentimental holiday romance - rather it’s a bit more realistic most of the time.
Rachel works at a care home for the elderly, and Charlie is a stay-at-home mom and wife of a professor, until she isn’t. Their lives are so different, even though they live nearly opposite one another.
Rachel is the bad girl of the area, getting into trouble at parties, throwing up, and getting a bad reputation as the local ‘lesbian troublemaker’. Under her hard exterior she has a caring heart. She does many acts of service, most going unnoticed. It’s only her bad deeds that get the attention of the local housewives’ gossip group.
Charlie is a devoted mom, well off enough not to worry about money, a member of the reading group, well respected in the local community.
When Rachel shows Charlie that her husband is having an affair, that starts a chain of events that have a happy ending.
As I pointed out above, I found this to be more realistic than many other books in its genre, especially the seasonal ones. It shows the bad side and the good side of relationships, and how petty gossiping neighbours can be. It’s a well written story, with solid characters and a positive vibe.

Unusual to have a book where I don’t really like either main. That isn’t a criticism, daft as that sounds. Both obviously have qualities I do like, but not a lot. However I am interested to see if they bring out the best in each other. Rachel is kind but that, for me does get lost in a lot of the other aspects of her personality. Charlie is so conditioned with politeness initially it is painful. However as the book develops so does my view of Rachel. The writer has done a gradual release of Rachel's personality. A life lesson for me here. Beware of my natural bias or I will miss good people. I also like the way it wasn’t just that Rachel did good things in but that Charlie started to see the good or rather the pluses of Rachel’s personality. I would mark this a 3.5 and I’m tempted to up it to 4 because I really enjoyed the unusualness of my reactions to both mains and my evolution of opinion but I would have liked to see more of Bill’s reaction at the party when the mains came down stairs and also why Rachel was looking after the boys so much…… ‘tho it is nice to leave a book wanting a bit more although the main story didn’t feel incomplete. I also enjoyed the bonus discussion of Evelyn Hugo!

I got an arc of this book through book siren! Thank you so much for the opportunity!
It's the perfect cozy romance for Christmas time.
If you enjoyed Delilah Green : then you will enjoy Jingle around the block!
At first I didn't really like Charlie but she grew on me and I reaaally loved her character development. I liked how her bisexuality was important for her and how Rachel never belittle her about it !
I loved some of the book club member and loathed other.
It was a fun read and a cute lesbian holiday romance.

The book opens in May with Rachel revealing to Charlie that her husband Bill is having an affair. It then jumps to the beginning of December with Rachel realizing her girlfriend Ashley is going to dump her and how she struggles at this time of year. Of course Ashley breaks up with Rachel at the same diner Charlie is at for brunch with the other housewives in their community. I really liked how this was used to spark a connection between Rachel and Charlie. The two of them are different people with different backgrounds and expectations, but throughout the book they learn how similar they are and how well they fit together.

Rachel moved back to Lake Ridge when her mother went into a retirement community so she could get a job there and keep an extra eye on her, even though her mother kicked her out when she came out at eighteen. Charlie moved to Lake Ridge when she was barely twenty and marrying her over fifty year old professor. Bill is now dating a new student and Charlie is having to navigate raising their thirteen year son, Aiden, while her husband has his year anniversary, seven months after she discovered the affair. Christmas is emotionally charged for both women.

I really liked how Charlie got to explore her bisexuality and found support not only through Rachel and her son, but a few friends in her community. I also liked how honest Rachel is, how she isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind, but at the same time is so very caring of those around her. Reading Rachel and Aiden bond over streaming video games was fun, especially when Aiden and Rachel took the time to explain the activity to Charlie.

I also really liked that in the end Charlie let herself be upset with Bill’s behavior. The conversation Rachel had with her mom had me in tears, it was so good. This book tackles several heavy topics, but balances it out with plenty of Christmas cheer and characters finding the best way to both communicate and support each other. I loved the ending and hope there will be more adventures for Charlie and Rachel!

This story was a very well-written holiday lesbian romance. The author tackles some challenging realities facing the main characters: dealing with the crushing angst of an unfaithful spouse and divorce; coming out in the midst of homophobic friends; looking for friendship to fill the empty loneliness; taking the chance on romance in spite of the pain of old patterns and fears.

This is the story of two seemingly opposite women finding each other. While Charlie and Rachel are merely acquaintances and neighbors at first, they slowly find themselves developing an unlikely friendship. Though very tentative and cautious at first, their curiosity about each other begins to grow as they discover likable hidden qualities. Yet, can they overcome their own pasts in order to embrace the present and the unfolding relationship and connection they are finding in each other? Or will the fears be too strong to overcome?

The story was well-paced, believable, and hopeful. I really liked the main characters and their evolution as the story unfolded. I also liked the way the author addressed homophobic attitudes and the prejudice so often inflicted on lesbians and bisexuals while having no intention to see the person behind the stigma and label. Rachel exemplified a loving, caring, kind, and giving person who also happened to be a lesbian. I loved her wit, lack of concern for the approval of others, and ability to stand strong in the face of detractors.

I look forward to reading more works by this author.

This book was written from a dual 3rd person point of view, which isn't exactly my cup of tea. I don't get the concept of a dual POV if it's in 3rd person, but the writing was pretty good overall. Usually, I stop reading 3rd person books like 50% in but this was, I loved the plot so much, I finished it and enjoyed it. I do wish it was written in 1st person. Personally, I also didn't like how similar some of the character's names were and it made it kind of hard to keep up (it's just a personal issue 😭)

The main characters, I didn't particularly like either of them, Rachel's personality, to me, felt like it kept changing, Charlie just seems like a character who one cannot really relate to that much (I don't if that makes sense but she feels really unrelatable in a way and over-polite to everyone) but I loved her character development a lot.

In this book, they had a book club, where they referenced another book. I felt like reading those parts, I was a bit lost but I love the referencing. I wish there was a bit more background provided for these references.

All said I would recommend this book to others as it's well written and the plot was good.

Contrary to my usual habit of not reading holiday books until December, this year I began at the end of October. Jingle Around the Block by Serena Kirsch has the most unlikely pairing I’ve read so far. Charlie, a rich suburbanite, barely knows her across-the-street neighbor Rachel, who works long hours as a CNA. These two become acquainted when Charlie at first needs Rachel’s help on a couple of occasions and then starts to seek out her company. Set against the Christmas holiday run-up, there are many problems the two have to face to find their HEA, which they do (not a spoiler as the book is subtitled a Christmas romance). I could relate to Charlie, even though I’ve never been a rich housewife, but I too made a similar decision to the one she made after her divorce. I’ve not read anything by the author before, but I’ll keep them on my book radar. I received an ARC for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Rachel comes from the school of (some) hard knocks, Charlie married well (financially) when she was young. Rachel's main issues seem to be about general survival, for example, employment, rejection, housing; Charlies main issues seem to be about a cheating husband and the fact her friends (in)conveniently forget she's bisexual. Rachel does both little and big things to make a positive difference in other peoples' lives, knowing the neighbours are nasty to and about her, Charlie attends book club and brunches and believes Rachel is below her social status.
Not exactly a match made in heaven, but it's a match; opposites attract I guess.
I was a little confused as to why Rachel transported Charlie out of the blue to catch the cheating husband, I was also a little confused as to why Rachel would attend the neighbourhood gatherings and build herself a reputation of being a messy drunk who breaks things.
Nonetheless, the girl gets the girl so it's a happy for now kind of story.

I am a sucker for sapphic holiday romance, especially geared for adults. I enjoyed this one, it gave me happy feelings inside. There were definitely sometimes I wasn’t sure where the side plots were going and I was always happy with where it did. But there wasn’t anything unique or special about it.

I feel like the author could work on the flow of their writing, sometimes it felt choppy and other times was just flat. The internal monologue of Rachel was sometimes confusing with the flow and how Rachel would talk out loud then back to her internal thoughts. I liked the modern references of streaming video games and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I feel like it will definitely date the book over time. Also the phrase “the other woman” was overused a lot. But overall I enjoyed it and would read other books by this author.

Realistic and optimistic lesbian romance featuring opposites attract and strangers becoming friends

Well written and realistically portrayed suburban story about two neighbours whose lives intersect and describing how they fall in love, in spite of their different backgrounds, their different personalities and their different takes on the importance of Christmas. This story takes the readers on a journey with a bisexual, soon to be divorced, housewife and the local lesbian lothario who is more than meets the eye. They start out looking like very unlikely friends and later romantic partners, but the way the story is told, it feels less like fantasy and more like reality with a happy ending. I kept reading to find out how this unlikely match would get together and stay together.

The beginning had me not liking any of the characters in the book. So I get why some people DNF but it really did redeem itself and it's a really good book. The characters had a lot of growth and inner dialogue. It took me a bit to see why they liked each other beside the fact that they both happened to be the seemingly only queer ladies in the little town they lived in.

As a big fan of queer media I loved the references to movies and tv shows and as a gamer I enjoyed the gaming part of Rachel's life a lot. It made the book feel so real and a part of the current world we live in.

Sooooooo many things could have happened.
None of them did.
It wasn’t immersive enough to be a cozy read which is what I assume the author was going for.
Any amount of mild drama resulted in zero consequences or resolution.
And all of this is crazy because the two main characters had so much to offer!
And the one simple question I wanted answered by the end of the book was never even discussed. (This is not a spoiler: Why the hell was she picking Leah’s kids up from school?!)
I would absolutely love it if the author could start from the diner breakfast scene and have another crack at this story.

I absolutely loved this book, I always load up my kindle at this time and they can be a mixed bag Christmas reads. This one surprised me even whilst reading, life is no fun for both Rachel and Charlie and it takes a while for any romance to get going. When it did it felt so real, the whole story was more real life with Rachel's shitty life and Charlie's shitty ex making Christmas miserable for them both. Serena still turned it in to something special and it weaved in to a real magic ending, I thoroughly recommend this book.

This book was so sweet and touching, the two protagonists awesome and kind in different ways, i love them. And about the gossipmongers who criticised the heroine even with her being so goodhearted and amable, tell them off, girl!
"Charlie sank into her couch, feeling more exhausted than she had before. It almost canceled out her ex-husband joking about her identity that Rachel had been so excited to hear it. Almost. Take that, Bill. A real lesbian likes that I’m bisexual. Tell that to your undergraduate lover."

This was a really cute story about two opposites that you wouldn’t think could ever attract.
Stereotypes and stigmas meant that Charlie and Rachel were poles apart but somehow, that sneaky little thing called love found a way to bring them together.
Bisexuality was represented in a refreshing way which was nice to read.
Very festive, very sweet, very good!

I liked this sapphic take on a Christmas romance.

One thing (which hopefully gets corrected in the finished copy?) is that in a chapter labelled “Saturday, Christmas Eve” it references dropping her kid off to school and picking him up?!

If you like Hallmark movies but wish they had a bit more realistic diversity, check this one out.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Okay. for a debut novel, it's quite good. their dynamics is realistic that they aren't lovey dovey.. that they're awkward at times and don't know what to say things to each other. or that they say the wrong things but eventually patch up once they communicate more and had time for introspection. again, they're human.

would have i liked more fleshing out of the MCs and other characters (Aiden, Maria, and Lisa!), yes. maybe even more of their past as well. but this is a decent read.

Who knew?

Having your neighbor take you to where your husband had a naked coed under him was not something she thought she was expecting to happen that morning. Finding out that actually you like kissing the opposite sex and enjoying it. No matter how homophobic your ex. He has a 20 year old living with him and he is 30 + years older than her, he has no room to talk. Happy Holiday. ( it is July). Enjoy!

loved so much of this little gay/bi book! loved the falling in love and the challenges faced in society. the story at the 90% mark felt a little sickly sweet & forced, with Rachel realising Charlie makes everyday like Christmas, so I would have loved that to have been a bit more carefully written and referred to through the book prior. But other than that, I was able to enjoy this cute little ending to a very sweet & powerful Christmas book.🏳️‍🌈

I enjoyed the banter between Charlie and Rachel, and the development of their relationship over the holiday season.

I would have given this book a 4 star if only Charlie would have stood up to her ex-husband after all the stuff he put her through. The fact that she was complacent and didn’t want to cause a scene with her now girlfriend Rachel was absurd. That and the fact that Charlie was incredibly rude to Rachel in the beginning and didn’t put off good vibes for me.

This was a nice, easy to read love story. The characters were well written, they had emotions, and weren’t always perfect - just like humans. I loved how other queer media was mentioned throughout and how casual homophobia was challenged.

I really enjoyed the book and the characters. Charlie seems to still be learning about herself and I think Rachel really helps with that which builds their relationship. I also really like Aiden and he is such a teenager for sure.
