I was a fan of the first book in the 'Negalyod'-series. Dinosaurs and SF combined - coupled with great art and huge action - what's not to like? This second book maybe bites off more than it can chew, losing the plot a couple of times and devolving in a hardly comprehensible metaphysical conclusion, but rather a book that aims too high and misses, that a book that doesn't try at all. Still, due to a more convoluted story, that tries to take it to a level that the first book did not warrant (we are in different universes here, with time taking a different course and the stars (and the moon) coming closer together instead of drifting apart), this cannot be classified as a master work. On the other hand, I think I will get more from this on a reread, and maybe the narrative elements will click into place.
But let's be totally honest, the deeper story is not why I read this book. It's got dinosaurs! And here we have a world in the grip of a deluge (with the art sometimes feeling like the engravings of Dürer or the apocalyptic art of John Martin) with the last humans and their dinosaurs surviving on huge ships, beset by pirates. There are sea monsters here, feathered baryonix, pterosaurs hit by lightning and so on ... Well drawn, with the action spectacular but still feeling real, and some huge spreads that kept the eye roving because of all the detail to be spotted. For the art alone this is worth spending time on, and especially for dinosaur nerds (of which I am one).
