Magic can’t solve every problem, and it can’t heal invisible wounds.
Captain Grant Gwydian is missing in action, a casualty of his recent military failures. An inexplicable disease ravishes the Arcane Mercenaries, confining the unit’s officers to quarantine and a makeshift hospital. The Mage Wars intensify as new enemies invade the beleaguered Empire of Alenann. The Apocalypse looms over everything.
Grant must break free of the clutches of the conniving underworld Syndicate to tackle the insidious enemies plotting to annihilate Grant’s unit and every StarTouched mage. He must race against time to navigate the dangerous bonds of political adversaries and ancient enemies to uncover the disease’s cure before the empire’s forces collapse in military defeat.
Can Grant rally his mercenaries to defeat the plot to wipe out the StarTouched and thwart the approaching Apocalypse?
Continue the story with Grant's Arcane Mercenaries, featuring Grant, Ez, Jafran, and Rienne in their latest adventure.
I have to say that the story deserves something closer to 4 stars. My reason for giving it a 3 is because for all the hype and intrigue around the star touched this novel held very little of it. This was almost purely a military novel/mystery. Written well and engaging but lacking almost completely in magic. It undermines the main characters existential angst about being cursed when he used his power like three time and in minor way at that. The sheer lack of magic progression and loss of the rest of his company for the whole book made it mediocre. Not only that but resolution to his mysteries came too easy. What are the chances there is a obvious doctor or a nice guard and understanding queen. The last two are refreshing to see in a book but unrealistic given the situation.
Strategy and tactics abound, with exciting fighting as well, this is a great story. I eagerly await the next chapter. Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe is reminiscent and was made into a BBC T.V. series. So fingers crossed.
Anyone who loves amazing and strategic battle sequences will love this tale. The conflict of battlefield emotions is high. Heroes, villains, action, sacrifice and betrayal are the cornerstone of this epic. Well done.
