I thought this was a great first hand experience of people escaping Iceland because of heavy taxation from Russia after WWII. His father wanted Teppo to be free, and Teppo wanted that too. He left in a small ship with 2 other couples and a man who could be the leader on the ship. They did it quietly because it wasn't legal for men to leave the country. Their adventure was amazing, difficult, happy, sad, and scary at times. It was a great story. I learned so much. I hadn't realized that Iceland was under the heavy hand of oppression. I loved the sailing and the relationships formed on the ship. What a story. Very worth reading.
An amazing true story of some Finnish Immigrants who left after the Soviet occupation in 1949 to find a better, freer life for themselves and their children in America. It is an astonishing accomplishment for 9 people and a dog in a 30 foot boat without modern communications or navigation. It wasn't easy at any time, and it is a testament to the innate goodness of some people that they made it at all. Of course, everyone wasn't good to them.
I just read this in condensed form in a few days and it was a good true story about people who sailed across the Atlantic from Finland right after WWII in a small boat to come to American.
