Windows show us the world outside. As Mark Cornish discovers, his classmate Glenda can create windows to other realms—not all of them friendly.
A window offers people a view of the world outside. For Mark Cornish, seventeen, a high schooler with a wayward single mother and someone with no prospects, windows offer an escape from reality.
That escape comes through the person of Glenda Cron, a classmate of his with an unusual ability. She can open windows—gateways—to other worlds. And she isn’t human, not exactly. She comes from Tellkar, a world somewhere in another galaxy, a world of shape-shifting, magic and various abilities.
It seems that Glenda—real name, Glynarra—is wanted by one of the most powerful kings on her world. King Lensa wants to acquire her powers, and when she won’t transfer them to him—which would mean her death—he places a curse upon her head. If she travels to another realm, she can only stay a maximum of three days.
Mark agrees to help her, even though he has no powers and no special abilities, save one. He won’t give up. As the two journey from world to world, searching for a way to defeat Lensa, they find themselves drawn to each other.
However, the curse is the real problem, and when the final showdown comes, it remains to be seen which is stronger—black magic or love.
Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence, death and gore.
J.S. Frankel was born in Toronto, Canada, many moons ago and managed to scrape through high school and university, earning a BA in English Literature and leaving no book unopened during his time at the University of Toronto. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Japan in order to teach English to the hapless residents of whichever city he happened to be living at the time.
In 1997, he married the charming Akiko Koike and their union produced two rather interesting children. Frankel and his family make their home in Osaka where he teaches during the day and attempts to write YA fiction at night.
Another fantastic read by this prolific author! Mr Frankel is magical craftsman when it comes to weaving stories that suck you into a vortex. The Window to Telkar is no exception! What if you had the power to travel to another realm? Where might you go? This well developed and intriguing story, however, is not just about that. Here we have a story of, yes, galaxy travel, but, most importantly, friendship and perseverance. Add to this, the complexity of decision making and greed. Come meet King Lenso, who is the epitome of evil, who, will, at any cost, try to steal Glenda’s special power and Mark, who possesses no special powers but for one: his willingness, fortitude, and perseverance to protect his friend, Glenda (Glynarra) as they trek from one celestial to another. Adventurous. Thought-provoking. Page-turning. Highly recommended for any age.
Get ready for lots of action, snappy comebacks, and an adventure that spans worlds.
Mark is a lonely teen on the cusp of eighteen. His classmate turns out to be a shape-shifting alien girl with the power to create windows to different worlds. They team up to unleash badassery and just a little romance.
The story is full of excellent world-building and we travel to several different worlds (some nicer than others). There is a ton of action and lots of baddies to keep our MCs on their toes.
Overall a thrill-packed saga with heroes you cheer for, bad guys that you love to hate, and fascinating new worlds to discover.
Memorable quote:
“If I’m right, the trees will part. and they’ll show us a way in.” “What if we’re wrong?” “The forest will eat us.”
My overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spicy pepper rating: none because it’s YA but it does have a few sweet scenes and a discussion about expectations and consent.
ARC received from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Travelling Between Worlds can be Dangerous and Exciting
Mark Cornish is a normal guy, going to school and doing his best to get on with life. His mother keeps extremely busy, and hence, Mark is self-sufficient in many ways.
Glenda Cron is a bit of an outsider, but nobody knows to what degree.
The two teenagers get thrown together, and a story full of fantasy and parallel universes begins.
JS Frankel is a prolific author, and his fantasies pull you in, leaving you no moment to reflect. The bad guys are evil, but his protagonists come across as real people with real, but often troubled, lives. The Window to Tellkar is no exception. It is thought-provoking and compelling.

Summary: Mark’s life changed after his father died leaving him basically to raise himself because of his absentee mom. Mark lives day to day knowing he has no prospects or future to look forward to. That is until the day that everything changes.
Glenda is the new girl in school who keeps to herself until she decides to approach the one person in school, Mark, to invite upon on a journey to help her against the evil king of her land. Now Glenda, or Glynarra as she is called on her world, has the magical ability to open windows into other worlds. The king is determined to take all the abilities he desires to make him stronger. The only problem is in the taking it kills the person of whom the ability came from. Glynarra has been on the run except a curse from the king’s magicians force her to return to her world every three days giving him the chance to capture her every time.
Mark agrees and the dangerous adventure begins taking them to new worlds, some safe and some placing them in perilous danger. Mark knows he has nothing to offer except his desire to help Glynarra or does he.
This was a wonderful story about acceptance, adventure, and a wonderful love story.
On the surface, prolific Sci-Fi/Teen & Young Adult author, Jesse Frankel, offers his readers an adventuresome story of stepping through portals to other worlds in ‘The Window to Tellkar’.
As always, it’s so much more. For Mark Cornish, a.k.a. Mark from Earth, he grapples with coming to terms with his mother’s distant parenting, and fear of darkness. For Glenda, a.k.a. Glynarra or Glynn, she mourns the death of her parents and is up against a murderous king who will stop at nothing to steal her magic power of opening portals to other worlds.
By choice, Mark accompanies Glynn wherever she goes, and against insurmountable odds and dwindling time, they ply their wits to get Glynn’s curse lifted, while Mark confronts his fear in the process.
It’s about making life-and-death decisions that are not perfect solutions.
A story filled with insightful commentaries, I highly recommend taking the opportunity of stepping through the window to Tellkar and other worlds.
And here is another great adventure story bey Jesse Frankel, as he tells us, how, when you have the magic, to open a window and step into another world, another realm. But Mark has to confront his fears, but the absence of his mother made it more easy for him, so he follows Glynn. But then Glynn confessed to him that a curse is put on her, by her King in her world. Glynn has to confront the King to lift it, because since Mark is with her, the curse is on him as well. They try many times, but failed, but would never give up. Will they succeed? An out-of-this-world adventure.
