Suspense, danger, action, intense moments, and romance are combined to provide readers with a fabulous read in Beneath Dark Waters by Karen Rose. This is the second book in the New Orleans romantic suspense series that is also partly a police procedural and a private investigator crime novel. If you like contemporary romances with lots of suspense and danger, then this book is one to check out. Except for the epilogue, the book takes place over the course of five days.

Assistant District Attorney Kaj Cardozo has only lived in New Orleans for six months, but he is known in both New York and in his new home city for his fight against corruption. He’s also working a high-profile celebrity assault case that is getting publicity across the country. When his son Elijah becomes the target of a kidnapping attempt, Kaj hires Broussard Investigations to protect Elijah. Val Sorensen is the person assigned to be his bodyguard and the firm is hired to investigate the incident. The investigation reveals more than they bargained for, as drugs, corruption, and murder are discovered.

Kaj, Val, and Elijah are likeable characters. Kaj is kind, understanding, and determined to help his boss root out corruption in the area. However, he also fears for his son’s safety. Val is a Marine veteran, tenderhearted, capable, and thoughtful. However, she is also estranged from her sister Sylvie. Elijah is ten years old, smart for his age, and kindhearted. Kaj and Val seem to balance each other, but their attraction came on a little too fast. However, these strong protagonists with strong senses of determination were easy to get behind and hope that they succeed in their endeavors. Several characters from book one make an appearance in this one as well so readers can catch up on their lives as well. Some of the antagonists are known immediately while others are slowly revealed.

The prologue immediately grabbed my attention and the story continues with action, investigation by both the police and the private investigation firm, and plenty of twists and turns to keep me engaged. The thrilling storyline, balanced with the emotional aspects of the work, made this a winner for me. The book was descriptive without slowing the pace, which is fast. Readers will get an excellent sense of the bayou, but I wanted a little more sense of New Orleans itself.

This riveting crime thriller, police procedural, and romantic suspense novel keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The novel builds suspense in a way that pulls readers into the lives of the characters. The plot is full of chasing down leads and interviewing people as well as plenty of danger for those involved. I enjoyed how the author provided unpredictable moments and a little humor, which offset some gruesome spots in this tale. Themes include murder, abduction, relationships, families, drugs, friendship, secrets, trust, assault, torture, corruption, and much more.

Overall, this briskly paced novel was engaging and atmospheric with great characterization. I can’t wait to find out who will be featured in the next book. I recommend this to those that like romantic suspense novels with relatable and likeable main characters.

Berkley Publishing Group and Karen Rose provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for August 15, 2023. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

Massive story with massive action.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book was a trip! I am not sure how Rose keeps bringing fabulous stories that consistently offer a wonderful balance of suspense and romance. This one is a fabulous ride into the deep depths of the bayou and New Orleans.
The best part of this story is the character development. She perfected the bad guys with all of the creepiness and meanness that draws you into the depths of the story. The supporting characters are wonderful as well. With a range of depth and conviction, Rose grabs your interest throughout this massive book.
The two main characters, Val and Kaj, were developed with heart and kindness, plus the growth of steamy heat and simmering love interest tempered the ugliness surrounding them.
This story is loaded with action, grit, gruesome imagery, and even some sweet lightheartedness that provides the balance to even out the crime and suspense levels.
Beneath Dark Waters is action-packed, compelling, and a massive read. Make sure to clear your schedule for this one. Long but so worth every page turn! Rose has mastered the art of writing suspense-laden romance and Beneath Dark Waters is addicting!
This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, romantic suspense novel. It is fast paced with murder, mystery, intrigue, a likable, strong and capable female protagonist, a kind and caring male protagonist, a sweet child, a heroic dog and vividly described settings. This is the second novel in Ms. Rose's outstanding New Orleans series, and can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone.
BENEATH DARK WATERS is book 2 in Rose's New Orleans series and book #28 in the Romantic Suspense series. Karen Rose's signature style is evident with a long, compelling, intricately woven plot line spanning a relatively short amount of time revolving around a large cast of characters. Pay attention to the small details as they always prove to be clues in Rose's books.
New Orleans Assistant DA J.P. Cardozo (Kaj to his friends) is working two high profile cases one of which brings about a thwarted kidnapping attempt on his young son Elijah. Kaj calls in Broussard Investigations for help in guarding his son as he suspects a leak in the police department. Highly trained, former Marine Val Sorensen is hired as Elijah's bodyguard and since they don't know who can be trusted, she and her guard dog Czar move in with Kaj and his son. Val is the survivor of a brutal attack from which she still has flashbacks making her a flawed but admirable character. When subsequent attempts are made to grab Elijah, Val and her team begin putting together pieces of a convoluted puzzle appearing to lead to the Gates brothers, one of which is being held in jail waiting to stand trial. The story that ensues is a complex, tension laden thriller with nonstop action from beginning to end.
BENEATH DARK WATERS reveals a network of crime ultimately extending deep within the NOLA police department. Rose draws upon the bayou setting of NOLA to set the scene for this dark thriller. Characters, both good and bad, are richly defined and highly believable. Crime scene depictions are brutal, graphic and disturbing. The growing romantic relationship between Val and Kaj is well written adding some needed relief from all the horror and harshness from the crimes. Elijah is a smart, observant child whose scenes with Val are heartfelt. While the bad guys are known by readers early on, the story is intensive with our hero and heroine working to save a child while unmasking a killer. Fans of the series are going to love seeing previous characters appear in this one; however, no worries if you haven't read previous books as each of this author's books stand alone with enough backstory and needed character references for readers to jump right in. I will say, though, that you're missing some fantastic books if you don't decide to read previous books in order.
Fast paced, intensive and highly engaging and atmospheric, BENEATH DARK WATERS is the best of blends of suspense, police procedural and romance suspense. Karen Rose's writing style draws readers in and holds them captive from beginning to end. I couldn't turn pages fast enough! Highly recommended to fans of suspense and crime thrillers with a side of romance.
Special thanks to Publisher Berkley for an arc of this thriller and for an invitation to the book tour. All opinions expressed are my own. This review is available on my blog Cross My Heart Reviews.
I discovered Karen Rose at the library about 16 years ago. I devoured every book they had and waited patiently each year for her new release.
Beyond Dark Waters is the 2nd novel in the New Orleans series. (Rose even references Scarlett from the Cincinnati series, which, for me, was one of my favorite parts of the book.)
Where is the MYSTERY?
Where is the SUSPENSE?
Where is the ROMANCE?
There’s nothing left to wonder. You’re introduced to the villains immediately (and their decisions are ridiculous) and the romance blossoms in a day. There’s some heat, but normally I can’t wait til the characters get together.
GONE is the double digit body count. NOBODY Was ever safe in a KR book. It was surprising to me!
This is plot driven action book side stepped by side stories that hitch up the pacing.
ELLIJAH is awesome but unbelievable at 9 years old. So definitely suspend your beliefs in this novel and just enjoy what you can. Everything lays out a bit too easily and some of the connections are OTT
My biggest beef is the REPETITION as nauseum. Only ONE Example:
“Yep,” Antoine said. “Nice shooting, Val. I think you hit the driver in the arm.”
Antoine was right. Val had done some fine shooting, considering one of the gunmen had been using a semiautomatic rifle.”
It drove me crazy. Especially Kaj. It’s spelled K-a-j
But rhymes with “pie”.
The GOOD!
• I liked many of the main characters & was rooting for them
• aside from the repetition, it’s a face paced read with lots of action
• Ellijah & Jace & Czar
• this book was so much better than the last one published earlier this year.
I seriously miss the old Karen Rose books. There’s so much more atmosphere, suspense and a lot of mystery. You could feel the tension and the fear!!
This book was missing all of that - and it felt more like a book-to-screen Netflix screenplay.
I recommend reading Quarter to Midnight right before reading Beyond Dark Waters to maintain its continuity and you won’t forget the characters.
I've read them all. I've loved most of them. This one . . . not sure how to review this one. It's missing some key elements: romance, mystery and suspense. Yep, missing all the key elements and there is no double-digit body count. Definitely missing that key Karen Rose element. What it has in abundance is a cute, smart 10-year-old. The plot, and the lives of everyone, center around him. It got annoying. Another thing that got really, really annoying was the baddies and their constant "what I'm going to do to her" future plans. The romance was contrived and staged with a houseful of people present. The mystery didn't exist - you knew the baddies from the beginning and two of the three were totally nuts. The suspense was there, somewhat, but lacking big time. What you got was a lot of angsty issues that the main characters were carrying around with them.
When there is an attempt to kidnap his son, Elijiah, J.P. "Kaj" Cardozo, a New Orleans ADA, is forced to admit that there are only a few people in the city he trusts. Being in the city for only six months, he has few friends on the police force, especially as his focus has been police corruption. Kaj hires Broussard Investigations to protect his son and Val Sorensen is assigned to the case.
Val Sorensen is a Marine veteran and new to the Broussard team. She takes this job very seriously and soon finds herself more than a little in love with her charge and his hot father. She also finds herself in the middle of the reasons they are in danger and those reasons put everyone around them in danger. 3 1/2-Stars
Many thanks to the Public Library for having nearly every book I ever want to read – especially books like these that are only approved to fangirling 5-Star reviewers prior to publication.
Prosecutor Kaj Jean-Pierre Cardoza and his son ten-year-old son Elijah are new to the New Orleans area, only being there six months. Kaj knows there is corruption in the police department and the Prosecutor’s office has had their hands full cleaning up a past ADA’s shady dealings. Kaj has been assigned two high profile cases, one where a movie star was allegedly raped by the director and one where a drug dealer beat his son’s oncologist to death when he failed to save him. Unfortunately, both put him and his son in danger. When Elijah narrowly escapes an attempted kidnapping, Kaj doesn’t trust the police to guard them and instead hires Broussard Investigations to keep them safe.
Val Sorenson, an ex-marine, is leading the protection duty and it’s not long before Kaj and Elijah dig out a special place in her heart. Little does Val know though that she’s got a personal connection to the thugs gunning for Elijiah and Kaj. Itll take all of Broussard Investigations to head off these determined villains!
Beneath Dark Waters
was action packed with danger at every turn, but also a character driven story with Val, Kaj, Elijah, and others forming close bonds. They all had some painful past baggage and found solace in each other. Val and Kaj were immediately attracted, having met through mutual friends, and being thrown together just faned those flames.
My heart ached for the innocent here because these bad guys were awful! I didn’t want anyone landing in their hands at all! My heart pounded as the events unfolded! Thankfully, Val and Kaj were smart and didn’t take unnecessary risks. Still…
This has a high page count, but the story really flew by! There are a few repeat characters and I think the group is growing into an extended close family as Broussard operatives form relationships, both romantic and platonic. We’re getting the personality and feel of the group as the series goes on, so I do recommend starting from the beginning (book one of the New Orleans series) but you could read this as a stand-alone and still enjoy the story because it’s focused on Kaj, Val, Elijah and Jace, and the mystery/conflict wraps up here. I’m looking forward to the next one and wonder if it’ll feature Phin. What was revealed about him hints at an interesting backstory!
Karen Rose has done it again for me, full of suspense and drama.
This is the second book in the series from New Orleans featuring the Burke Brossard private investigation Agency,
Val Sorensen has now become Elijah’s bodyguard, after someone has attempted to kidnap him.
Elijah’s father and val, investigate who is trying to kidnap and murder his son.lots of twists and suspense as always from Karen.
Loved this book,looking forward to the next instalment of this series.
Once again I’m in the minority. I didn’t like this book at all. It went on and on and on and was a real struggle to finish. The end result could have been achieved with 200 pages chopped out. The plot line was ridiculous, there was too much repetition and nonsense, and the sex scenes made me want to vomit. No more for me. Sorry.
Beneath Dark Waters is the second book in Karen Rose's New Orleans series and brings readers back to the world of Broussard Investigations. With a lot of familiar faces the story takes us on the journey of an attempted kidnapping, high profile court cases, and the attraction between a bodyguard, and her client.
The story moved at a fast pace and gave us a lot of different players in the game. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect and trying to figure out just what was going to happen before it did. I liked that there were a lot of different parts to the story that came together and connected different pieces of the puzzle. It never felt like too much going on for me even though there were a lot of different things happening at once and even some of the past coming forward and being connected to new parts of the case.
Bottom line, this was a great addition to Ms. Rose's world and another story that I heavily enjoyed by her. I can't wait to see what else New Orleans will give us.
Back in the sultry, dark world of Karen Rose’s New Orleans series, the Broussard Investigations is called on once again to face off in an all-out effort against evil villainous criminals. Karen Rose writes amazing loathsome antagonists, but also equally incredible teams of criminal investigators who get the job done without missing a beat in the romance department.
Beneath Dark Waters is a standalone second book in the New Orleans sub-series and the twenty-eighth entry in the overall Romantic Suspense series. There are connections to the previous book, but not in such a way that new readers couldn’t grab this one and appreciate all they were getting.
Beneath Dark Waters opens with a terrible kidnapping attempt that did not succeed, but put New Orleans Assistant District Attorney, JP “Kaj” Cardozo on the alert that one of his cases caused someone to go for his vulnerable son, Elijah. He is guilt-ridden, but doesn’t waste time skipping the dubious protection of NOPD and goes straight to Broussard’s. He’s assigned former Marine, Val Sorensen.
Val has demons of a personal nature she fights after a gang rape back in her military days that she bravely didn’t allow to be swept under the rug. She’s a good security expert and particularly with kids. This shows when she gets herself up to speed on Elijah’s diabetes issue and doesn’t let her mutual attraction with Kaj prevent her from doing her job of protecting and investigating. She also champions Jace who as a teen had a tough lot in life already even down to his part in Elijah’s kidnapping attempt.
It was stomach churning for Val to discover that the gang associated with Elijah’s kidnapping isn’t entirely disconnected from her own past. Everyone at Broussard gets on board with Kaj and Val to work on the situation when they learn what is in back of the connection both his cases share.
And, to hype up the tension, the major villain gets narration time as well. I really wanted some big-time justice there and Karen Rose delivered.
In the end, this story was a blend of dark and light which is the author’s specialty when presenting the dregs of human nature. There were a few lagging moments in the first half as it was setting the table, but it was riveting when it counted. Warnings to those who can’t read about abuse and a past rape which is all handled carefully, but is part of the narrative. There are troubles that come out of the cases and Kaj’s family, but good things from his romance with Val and the teamwork of the expanding Broussard Investigations that go after the powerful evil in New Orleans. Romantic Suspense fans who want a gritty case balanced with a solid romantic pair look no further than this series.
I had a better time reading this sequel than the previous book, but there were moments where the plot still dragged a little bit. The romance was better established and developed, however, and I really liked Kaj and Val together!
In general, all characters were well written and explored. This was a packed story, yet Karen Rose did a great job at making sure every single character had their place and contributed to the plot without bogging it down. It seemed to me that the slow parts were more due to filler scenes than any sort of character work.
The mystery was intriguing from the very start! There was quite a bit of action and a lot of tension throughout. Sadly, this did lose me a bit with its twists and turns. The interconnections ended up being too much for me and I disliked how convoluted things became. Even so, the ending was so damn sweet and I was content with the way the story wrapped up.
I fear Karen Rose has lost her brilliant thriller edge. Everyone has to have trauma, everyone has to be told they’re the best thing and deserve the world, everyone has to fall into relationships after meeting each other twice. Just tiresome!
The first book in this New Orleans series is Quarter to Midnight, which introduced Broussard Investigations, run by Burke Broussard. The firm is instrumental in helping victims find justice. As Karen Rose continues the series with Beneath Dark Waters, Val Sorensen, a former Marine just as her boss is, has been assigned to protecting the young son of public prosecutor Kaj Cardozo. Kaj's newest case has placed his son Elijah in danger, so he hires the firm to protect Elijah, especially when he is nearly kidnapped.
As Kaj's case involves a high profile celebrity sexual assault, the case as well as Kaj, has garnered the attention of the press, and Kaj will do everything in his power to keep Elijah safe. In true Karen Rose style, she brings danger, intrigue and romance to her readers in a fashion where this book was impossible to put down.
As Val works to protect Elijah and Kaj, it is hard to imagine how much is packed into the story as it takes place over the course of five days. With the style of writing, as well the fast pace of this story, it is so full of suspense, but also shines the light on corruption deep in the NOPD, and brings in nefarious characters who present clear danger.
One thing about this book is that there is a secondary protagonist that was even more touching than the ever-wise, knowledgeable beyond his years, Elijah. There was another young character who really touched my heart - and Val's as well.
I really love how Karen Rose brings so many elements together in her novels. It is hard to believe that this book was nearly 600 pages. I flew through it, and will mention again, it took place over five days! Such skill! Such talent! In fact, I was so pulled into this New Orleans series that I had to read book three in this series, Buried Too Deep, which won't release until August of this year. Compelling, addicting and more. Now that I have WAY more than a year to wait for the next book in this series, I just might have to reread all three books sometime in the near future.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This entertaining romantic suspense title is the second in the New Orleans series and introduces us to more people in Broussard Investigations.
When Prosecutor Kaj Cardozo needs a bodyguard for his nearly kidnapped ten-year-old son Elijah, he goes to Broussard because he doesn't trust the New Orleans Police Department. Broussard assigns former Marine Val Sorenson to the case because she's good with kids and has a connection to the drug gang that was implicated in the attempted kidnapping.
Cardozo is working on two high profile cases. A man has beaten a doctor who specialized in childhood cancer to death because he blamed him for the death of his young son. The second case is that of a famous actress who has accused a film director of rape. It turns out that the cases have some connections that aren't obvious at first.
This was a twisty tale told in part by one of the major villains of the story who is a real evil character. I enjoyed the relationships in the story. Val and Kaj are two damaged people who are healing and find each other along the way. He is dealing with the loss of his wife to cancer and raising a very bright and diabetic son. She is overcoming the trauma of being raped by three of her fellow Marines and then not letting the Marine Corps cover it up.
Val is also dealing with the death of twin. Throughout this story, she learns more about her brother and learns that he wasn't the hero she thought he was which brings its own trauma to the situation.
So much happens in the 592 pages of the story that it is impossible to even hit the high points. But the story has people displaying courage in horrible situations and it is the story of a found family that is growing up around Broussard Investigations. I enjoyed it.
This is the second book in the New Orleans series and in my opinion, it just gets better and better.
Public Prosecutor Kai Cardozo is working on a high profile celebrity sexual assault that's already dominated the press.
When his son Elijah becomes the target of a kidnapping he hires Broussard Investigations to protect his son. Val is the assigned bodyguard.
The investigation will reveal more than they bargained for as drugs, corruption and murder are discovered.
A great read that manages to encompass suspense, danger, murder and romance in a way that held me gripped, holding my breath as I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Full of action and just brilliant!!!
I went in with a positive outlook but overall, this book is incredibly cheesy at best. The book is over 500 pages but probably should have been around 250. A lot of filler nonsense. The main character Val, who is supposed to be this tough bodyguard, ex Marine, is completely unprofessional and her behaviors and mannerisms would never fly in the real world. So is the ADA Cardozo's character. It bothers me when research isn't properly done on law enforcement characters prior to writing. They would never act the way they were portrayed in this book. Think Hallmark meets COPS. Even the hardcore "drug dealing killers" in this book are cheesy. Drug dealers and tweakers don't use words like "duh!!" and laugh and eat granola bars together every morning. It was so cringy. The sex scene also was unnecessary, and again, if this would have happened in the real world, she would have been fired immediately. Save your time. Pick a different book to read.
Karen Rose returns to New Orleans for a story that will keep you reading long into the night.
As Assistant District Attorney Kaj (pronounced pie) Cordozo's son is targeted when a man is remanded in custody for beating a doctor to death.
That man is Aaron Gates. Who it turns out is connected to a gang Sixth Day. Whom NOPD believe long disbanded but now believe are targeting Kaj's son.
But are they?
That's what Kaj has employed Burke Brossard Private Investigation Agency to find out and also to keep his son safe and Val Sorenson is tasked with the job. But Val has a personal connection. As her brother Van was murdered by a member of Sixth Day four years ago.
Yet, as the investigation gets underway it becomes increasingly clear there is more at play than anyone thought and all eyes soon move to Aarons brothers.
And Val starts to question why her brother was murdered. Only the answer isn't the one she expected.
Yet, as the danger mounts Val is more determined than ever to do whatever is needed to keep Elijah and Kaj safe.
However, with threats coming from every direction and trouble knowing who the team can trust. This is not an easy task.
And with a fast-paced, edge of your seat and brilliantly unpredictable storyline. This was a gripping read. That I'd one hundred percent recommend to crime fiction fans everywhere
My thanks to Headline and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Beneath Dark Waters. 😊
When two brothers boch a kidnapping Val is hired to be the boys bodyguard it doesn’t help that she is extremely attracted to the nine-year-old‘s dad. I really had high hopes for this book especially after the beginning but I found myself losing interest and although I have read other Karen Rose books and have never felt out of place even though I didn’t read the whole series this one just wasn’t my favorite. Even when the nine-year-old Isaac was questioning Val I thought no nine year old would have such questions especially for an adult I know they have precocious children but really? Are usually do not have the popular opinion so you may actually love this book after all it wasn’t completely horrible and have some really redeeming scenes in the book especially with the brothers I guess because Karen Rose wrote it I was expecting to absolutely love it either way it is still entertaining and so I would still recommend you give it a try. I want to thank Net Galley and Berkeley publishing group for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This author never fails to bring suspense and emotion with well developed characters.  Beneath Dark Waters is set in New Orleans; it is the second book set there and #28 in the Romantic Suspense series.    This is my favorite romance genre by far because their is a mystery and action along with the romance.
In New Orleans, instead of being centered around law enforcement, the stories seem to be characters who work for Broussard's private investigators. Broussard is an ex-cop in New Orleans and has friends on the force who also figure in the events.
The new ADA in town is here partly to start cleaning up the corrupt players on the force which is one of the reasons Broussard left the police.  The stakes feel as high as they can get when there is an attempted kidnapping of the ADA's son, Elijah.  The emotional angst of that possibility and the situation of other minors kept me in suspense.  Not only is there a lot of action, but also many details as the criminals try to accomplish their goals. They want to force the ADA to let them get on with their criminal activities.
The romance develops between Broussard's agent, Val and the ADA, Kaj.  They bond over Elijah and protecting his safety, as well as desire to capture the criminals.  We do see some characters from the previous book in New Orleans.
I highly recommend and enjoy these stories.  I don't think you have to read them all in order, although they are well worth the effort, even though they are often twice the size of a regular book.  I would at least read a city in order.  There are connections throughout the series beyond each city which are fun for those like me who have read every one.
J.P. “Kaj” Cardozo is the Assistant District Attorney for New Orleans. When his young son is nearly kidnapped, he hires Broussard Investigations to protect him. Kaj feels tormented that his job puts his son’s life in jeopardy. However, he cannot ignore his growing attraction to his son’s new female bodyguard. The investigation takes a darker, drastic turn when they learn there is more to both of his high-profile cases. Will Kaj have to step away from those cases to protect his son? Or will he power through to allow justice to be served?
Veteran Marine, Val Sorensen works as a bodyguard, and sometimes investigator, for Broussard Investigations. She is specifically chosen to protect ADA Cardozo’s ten-year-old son. Val cannot help but grow attached to the boy and his attractive father, but she refuses to act on her attraction while on the job. When she and her associates investigate the kidnapping attempt, they discover something even more sinister and dangerous. Can Val protect Kaj’s son from all the threats? Or will her past incapacitate her from the job?
Kaj is such an unusual name. I appreciate how the author incorporates its pronunciation into the story. Generally, authors leave it up to the readers’ discretion. I understand Kaj’s uncertainty towards Jace. He hates everything the teenager has been through; however, he cannot ignore the boy’s involvement in his son’s near kidnapping. What I like the most about Kaj is his thoughtfulness towards Val’s past trauma. He does not want to do something that would bring up painful and terrifying memories.
Val is a great role model for woman. She has survived the most horrendous ordeal a woman can face. Val has managed to overcome her mental demons and move forward. I admire Val’s willingness to become Jace’s advocate. She knows the boy has been dealt a bad hand, especially by his two older brothers. Val believes the teen deserves better, and she wants to help him achieve it. What I like the most about Val is her thoughtfulness towards Elijah’s medical needs. She researched his condition, so she could better understand everything he may need while under her protection.
BENEATH DARK WATERS is the second book in Karen Rose’s romantic suspense series, NEW ORLEANS. It can easily stand alone, which is good since I did not read the first book. I am no stranger to this author’s works. She focuses more on suspense than romance. However, the romance aspect lightens the heaviness of the plot and some of the subject matter. The story starts out slowly, and it drags on in some places. Then the momentum picked up close to the end that made me reluctant to put the book down. Trigger warning: PTSD, Child abuse, torture, and past rape.
This is the second book in the New Orleans series, with a lot of new characters and a few from the first book, however unlike previous series I did not think this book tied in as seamless as other novels in previous series have. I think this may be the reason I’m a bit disappointed in this book.
I found this a hard read for the first two chapters, I did not like any character, even the kid was annoying! where usually the main protagonists have a strong appeal. The romance, alway expected but I didn’t ‘feel’ this hook up at all!
I love Karen Rose’s books. I have read all of them. And all series in order. This book I really struggled with. This is my personal opinion only.
I read the first book of the New Orleans series before reading Beneath Dark Waters, and I found that the same patterns/themes carried across. This made the story quite predictable.
I found that the beginning of this book and the storyline was intriguing, and you wanted to read more to find out what was going to happen. However, as the plot of the story is revealed so early on into the book, it feels pointless reading the rest, and this is something I don't like which is a shame because it was a good storyline. There were a lot of characters introduced at once, and it was really difficult to keep track of who's who, and their part in the story. Elijah also asks a lot of questions at the beginning of the book however they feel really unnatural for a 10 year old. The author writes that it is because Elijah is smart to justify this but this just takes away from the story. It's almost as if everything that the author feels may be questioned, is already 'addressed' in the book but it isnt a strong enoughl, or convincing enough argument.
Another minor thing which impacted the flow of the story were giving characters names that were somewhat difficult to know how to pronounce, only for the character to explain how to pronounce their oddly spelled name. This was consistent with the first book too and something which I found quite annoying 😅.
Like with the first book, despite the length, there was not enough relationship development, or romantic tension to make the relationship between Kaj and Val feel meaningful. I felt disconnected to their romance story because of this.
Some details were brushed over, such as the mole. This was obviously quite a big part of the story and the events that happened but it didn't have enough explanation or attention for me, which made the impact of what happened quite dull.
In a couple of places when switching POV, the same text would be repeated and it was almost like when switching the POV, the new POV was slightly behind in the timeline and this disrupted the flow of the story.
Overall I give this book 3 stars. It was good and I know other people would enjoy this but for me there were things missing in a book that I would really enjoy and the story did not flow well in places.
Beneath Dark Waters is the second book in the New Orleans series. In this one, Val is an investigator/ bodyguard with Broussard Investigations. She is hired to protect prosecutor, Kai's son. He has been the target of a kidnapping attempt. Kai wants to keep him safe while he prosecutes a high profile case.
I definitely liked this one a lot more than the first book in this series. I thought the romance was more believable and I felt more invested in it. There was a strong attraction, but it was also a slow burn. I appreciated that they took their time and didn't let the feeling of danger force them together. Val's relationship with Elijah was very sweet. I liked how she treated him like his opinion mattered. Along with the romance, there is a really enjoyable mystery. It was fast paced and I was kept guessing. I do recommend this one and look forward to reading the next one.
