We know students have more to learn than ever before and there is a lot of pressure to perform well on tests, demonstrating superior learning. However, common study strategies such as cramming, highlighting text, and repeated reading have little impact in the longer-term. This exciting new book reveals the effective study strategies that will help you to use your time more efficiently, ace your tests, and retain information over time.
In full color and accompanied by beautifully illustrated graphics, Ace That Test offers evidence-based learning strategies that students can use during their study sessions, including dual coding and the power of retrieving what they know. Including concrete examples of the ways students can use each strategy, illustrations to leverage dual coding principles of learning, and questions and activities for retrieval practice, the book covers:
- How to prepare the mind for learning
- Making better decisions about what you study
- Planning study sessions
- Use visuals and words to aid understanding
- Understanding concepts
- Improving learning in the long run
- Reading and note-taking strategies

Great read for students - especially in an FYE/FYS course
This is an approachable, fun book for students who want to improve their efficacy in learning. Chapters are short and overflowing with proven strategies for learning. First year students are bound to take away a lot of practical tips.
Each chapter has scenarios at the end to help readers engage with the content. And there are sample answers to these questions at the end of the book!
This book would be great for students BEFORE they arrive at college. I think educators (K-12 and higher ed) would benefit from this book as well.
It’s a concise, 120-page guide to studying-what marvelous insights are you going to get?
- Sleep well - Eat well - Take breaks when studying-avoid cramming. Short bursts of study (and lots of them) are better than long slogs. - Make good notes - Don’t have distractions like your mobile around-focus - Practice memory retrieval - Get support from your network - Be confident, or at least fake confidence
Is any of this radical? Not to me. It’s a good, concise guide, with scientific references taking up a quarter of the book to drive the points home. Yes.
What did I get out of this book? Confirmation that I’m on the right path. Not just a bias towards common sense, but scientifically proven confirmation! So, peace of mind in the end?
Such a great book for students to read. Learning how to learn empowers students to achieve their best, and approach their studies with greater confidence.
