note: the three felties shown on the cover are comparatively ugly. inside, there are the most adorable little animals of all time. and i have gone to michaels and used up the last of my gift certificate, and have bought several nice colors of felts, and i am getting ready to make messenger bear and sleepy fox. there is a mouse with a bandolier!! how can anyone say no to that? god i really want school to end so i can stop this damned studying and just sew and read and eat crab pie. thats the plan. this review probably makes no sense but i am very sleepy. so.

Felties: How to Make 18 Cute and Fuzzy Friends / 978-0-74078-511-5

When it comes to crafts, sometimes it seems I've done them all. Lately I've gotten into crochet and amigurumi because I *love* the cute little toys, but the overall effort is still very time consuming for me because I'm so new at it.

Well, these felties are all the fun of the crocheted amigurumi, with a fraction of the time, effort, and cost. Seriously, this is the cheapest new craft I've ever taken up - the little panda bear I made took all of four colors of felt (four sheets for a dollar, and I only used a fraction of each sheet), two colors of cross stitch floss (also four for a dollar), a touch of craft glue, some sharp, comfortable scissors, a needle and stuffing, and a little bit of artist's tracing paper. These felties are easy to make, too - it probably took me about 30 minutes to trace the pattern, another 30 to cut all the felt shapes out, and about 45 minutes to assemble the actual feltie doll, and I've no doubt that the process will be much faster the second time.

Pleasantly, the patterns in this book are very varied, not just the same repeated dog/cat/bear with different ears on each page. No, this book has Russian dolls, lions with crazy manes, the CUTEST panda bear ever, a mushroom person, a rat with cool sunglasses, a polar bear with child, a wild-eyed cartoon rabbit, an adorable sleeping fox, a puppy with a sailor outfit, a "messenger" bear with a pouch for tiny letters, a cute little chihuahua, a curly-horned ram, a samurai, a mummy cat, a pirate mouse, an adorable alien, a strange...squirrel thing, and a wolf with a hoodie. My definite favorites are the panda (I've included a picture) and the sleeping fox, but what I like best about this book is that the explanations are so clear and simple that I think it will be extremely easy to make my own patterns - something that I rarely feel confident in doing.

It's worth noting that these felties are SMALL. The panda bear nestles into the palm of my hand - it's that small. Although everything is simple felt and thread, I wouldn't leave these around small children or animals - they're probably a choking hazard if the child decided to scarf the feltie down. Having said that, the instructions are so clear and the construction process is so simple, that it would be incredibly easy to enlarge the pattern and make a larger, less 'edible' feltie.

I've attached a picture of the panda bear I made, along with the picture included in the book (I only had gray felt instead of black, so her feltie looks better!). I received this book free through Amazon Vine for purposes of review, but this hobby is so fun and addicting that I'm now interested in buying more feltie books - I just hope they are all as good as this one!

Filled with full color photos of each project. You will need to photo copy the cutouts or use tracing paper to use them. The projects are really simple & a lot of them are very very cute. Some bead work has been incorporated. Since I am a beginner at felties, this is great for me. I think it's perfect for the kiddies! If you are experienced with making felted "friends" then I think this book might be a bit to basic for you.
I would have given this 5 stars if it wasn't for some of the "friends" being of things I couldn't identify. Example, The Sun-Loving Rat. I thought it was a cat. "It's a rat??" I thought. I look more closely & then "ahh okay, I see how it's a rat now." There are a few friends that are like that. Even so, there are plenty of really adorable friends. I esp. like the Mushroom Girl.
There are 18 projects in all & if you want to know what you get to create here goes:
Babushka (a cutie with beads), Little Lion, Panda, Mushroom Girl, Sun-Loving Rat, Polar-roo, Pensive Rabbit, Sleepy Fox, Sailor Puppy, Messenger Bear (Does not look anything like a bear to me...), Cute Chihuahua, Curly Ram, Samurai Cat, Mummy Cat (awww so cute!), Retro Alien (I dig him), Pirate Mouse (how can you not love a pirate mouse?), Vivid Squirrel (I don't see the squirrel but I do see the vivid), Hoodie Wolf (another cutie).
The great thing about this is I find that what I don't like about a pattern, I can change. So if something doesn't really look like the critter named, I make some adjustments to make it look the way I like. This helps bring out some of your own inspiration & creativity. The book can give you a little creative boost so to speak! And of course there are the "friends" that are just so perfectly cute they don't need any changes!
Bottom line, I recommend this book if you are inexperienced like me or have kids who want to make felties! It's a good time! Yippie!

Now, Felties isn't something I was normally seek out. I'm into the cute but wouldn't really consider myself into sewing. But I happened upon it one day, noticed that it looked simple enough and became OBSESSED. I ordered the book, 2 weeks later it finally showed up, I went out that night and bought just about every possible material (cost around $40) I thought I would need to complete any and all of the patterns and set off to work.

I started off with Mushroom Girl because to me she was the cutest. And I will be honest, it was a struggle, i almost gave up, probably took me about 3 hours. It probably didn't help that I started with a pattern with a lot of embellishments. But once I completed that first pattern I realized it wasn't really bad once I got into the sewing mindset. And from there I went to complete 10 of the 18 patterns in the book as of now. I'd say right now it takes me probably about 1-2 hours to complete a pattern.

Since my sewing skills aren't the great I modified as I went, making things easier for myself and adjusting the patterns to work a little better for me. The book is very simple to work with and definitely has given me a lot of ideas as to how I could create my own patterns, which I would like to try sometime soon. The patterns are very very small but I think it would be very simple to enlarge them on a copier to fit someone's comfort level.

Overall this is a fantastic book that has introduced me to a great new hobby! I just wish there were more patterns in the book!

Unbelievable cuteness!!! So easy to make too! My only problem (nothing to do with the book) is finding the red/white polka dot for the toadstool. I used to see it at the craft stores all the time. Now when I have something to use it for they no longer carry it :(

The author's book on zombie felties was my first foray into the world of felties, and I really like her designs and almost illustrative quality to the patterns and final result.
